TOTOWA, NJ (February 12, 2013) - Casual boxing fans might look at the heavyweight division today and think that to be a champion a boxer must be pushing seven feet tall. However hardcore enthusiasts understand that size isn't the only quality that matters in boxing's biggest division. In fact, many fight followers will tell you that the average-sized big men are the real killers among heavyweights. There's an old adage of the sport that states, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall". Until recently, this saying certainly was the case. Throughout the history of boxing, some of the heavyweights with the biggest reputations were not in the same league, height-wise, as the current crop of boxing behemoths. Ring kings like Joe Louis, Sonny Liston and Larry Holmes all barely broke the six-foot mark, while Mike Tyson, Rocky Marciano, and Joe Frazier were less than six feet tall. Evander Holyfield, always considered relatively small, ruled the heavyweight roost after moving up from the cruiserweight... Read more...

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 12th, 2013) -- More than six years have passed since Peter Manfredo Jr. knocked out fellow Providence native Joey Spina on national television at The Dunkin' Donuts Center in what was, at the time, Rhode Island's biggest turf war. As they prepare to face one another again Friday, March 15th, 2013 at the Twin River Event Center in the latest chapter of their longstanding rivalry, both Spina (26-3-2, 18 KOs) and Manfredo Jr. (38-7, 20 KOs) are dealing with the fact there's much more at stake now than there was the first time they fought in 2006. The pressure's higher than ever; Manfredo Jr., now on his second fight since returning to professional boxing in November, will turn 33 later this year, while Spina, coming off consecutive losses for the first time in his career, is 35. Time is no longer an ally, and a loss March 15th could derail both fighters in what is shaping up to be their final run at championship glory. The Spina-Manfredo Jr. II showdown, promoted by Jimmy... Matthew Macklin has challenged Irish middleweight rival Andy Lee to put up or shut up following Lee's claims over the weekend that Macklin would be one of his "easier" fights. (1 minute 48 seconds into the following interview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-z6nHEhXP4) var so = new SWFObject("http://www.youtube.com/v/F-z6nHEhXP4&rel=0&border=0", "youtube_1", "640", "480", "8", "#ffffff");so.addParam("movie", "http://www.youtube.com/v/F-z6nHEhXP4&rel=0&border=0");so.addParam("wmode", "transparent");so.write("youtube_1"); Lee made the bizarre claim prior to a points win over Anthony Fitzgerald in Belfast having already called out Macklin in a recent radio interview where he said, "That's definitely the fight I want so now I think it's time for us to get it on. We're fighters so why not fight each other. We're both with the same promoter so there are no obstacles really." Both men are under contract to US promoter Lou DiBella and Macklin says it's time for Lee's actions to match his words.... Read more...

New York, NY (2/8/13) - When DiBella Entertainment (DBE) returns to the Roseland Ballroom in NYC on Thursday, February 21, with the latest edition of the popular New York-based Broadway Boxing series, promoter Lou DiBella will be showcasing three of the newest and most promising young stars on the DBE roster. Philadelphia boxing is in a slump. There has been just one card this year within the city limits—barely--at Harrah’s Philadelphia. The next Philadelphia boxing card is set for April 26 at the National Guard Armory on Roosevelt Boulevard. As a promoter, I can continue to complain about not having a decent venue, but that is not the only problem holding things up. Times have changed! Fighters no longer are just fighters; they must be able to pay their way with tickets to land a spot on a local card, especially those cards without television. Expenses appear to be in the same ball park whether the fight is televised or not. Though every card should be held to the same standards, expenses are not on the same level when there is no television income. It is extremely difficult for a promoter to make money on a non-televised show. Fortunately, there is no shortage of fighters in Philadelphia. Fighters are willing to fight and everyone is looking for a new place to run a show. But if we continue... Read more...

Dierry Jean (23-0, 15 K.-O.), who was once known as the best kept secret of Quebec boxing, will no longer be so. Indeed, the world's best of the WBC will have the opportunity to demonstrate the extent of his talent outside the metropolis where he will defend his NABF title on February 16th at the Hilton Casino Lac-Leamy in the final of the inaugural gala of the Fight Club 2013 series. This confrontation is important for Dierry Jean who is in preparation for a possible battle for the title currently held by Danny Garcia. In fact, he will face the Mexican Cosme Rivera (35-15, 25 Ko) in a 12-round duel that promises a lot of action. “Veteran of his division, Rivera will be a competitive opponent for Dierry who will no doubt be able to dazzle us with his performance”, says president of the Eye of the Tiger Management, Camille Estephan. In the semi-finals, Montrealer Ahmad 'The Boss' Cheikho (8-4-2, 5 Ko) will face a major challenge for he will be competing with an established athlete as... Read more...
