LOS ANGELES (Jan. 23) – WBC Silver Super Lightweight Champion Lucas “La Máquina” Matthysse (36-3, 34 KOs) has renewed his promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions, it was announced today. The Argentinean star first got his start in 2004 entering the professional boxing scene with a powerful technical knockout. Since then Matthysse, has had a promising career winning by knock out 34 times out of his 36 wins.

“As Golden Boy works to put together a 2015 full of huge, fan-friendly fights, Lucas Matthysse is, and will now remain, a core part of our team,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Founder and President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Lucas is a strong and powerful fighter, someone the elite of the division have to look out for in the years to come, and we are excited to continue our successful partnership with him.”

“I am excited to continue to work with Oscar and Golden Boy Promotions,” said Lucas Matthysse. “They are my family. They have supported me and built my career from the beginning and I’m loyal to them as they have been to me. I’m looking forward to my future and what 2015 has to offer.”

“We are very happy to continue our relationship with Golden Boy Promotions,” said Mario Arano, Manager of Matthysse. “Golden Boy Promotions has exceeded expectations, and we look forward to what 2015 will hold for Lucas under the tremendous support and guidance of Oscar.”

Most recently, Matthysse faced Roberto “Massa” Ortiz in a 12-round bout for the WBC Silver Super Lightweight title on Sept. 6 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Matthysse stole the night with a knock down over Ortiz with a powerful body shot in round two, which took Ortiz over 10 seconds to recover, ruling the bout in Matthysse’s favor.

Earlier in 2014, Matthysse waged war against John Molina Jr. for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Super Lightweight title at the Stub Hub Center in Carson City, Calif. He gave the crowd a great show as he went to battle in the 12-round bout. Matthysse was knocked down twice before roaring back to finish Molina in the 11th round of a thrilling war that received considerable ‘Fight of the Year’ interest for 2014.

Mattysse has a knack of doing things the hardway. By that I mean he makes himself an indisposable asset to promoters and fight distributors by consistantly being willing to take the most risky and competitive fights available. Need a competitive and eager boxer to bring out the best in your prospect while simultaneously attracting viewers to tune in? Look no further than Lucas Mattysse. But beware, Mattysse is prone to deliver more than what a B-side fighter is expected to achieve. He was brought in to provide decent resistance against the newly recommitted Judah and the red hot (at the time) Devon Alexander. Most people believe Mattysse both of those fights and results should have been scored in Mattysse's favor. At the very least I personally felt a draw should have been awarded. Lucas may have gotten the raw deal on both of those encounters but his secret was exposed The Argentinian was much more than a B-side... Mattysse had finally became regarded as even money or better against anyone at junior welter including Danny Garcia. Flash forward to the present.... Lucas hasn't changed a bit. Just a few days ago Mattysse issued a challenge to the Siberian Rocky himself. Provodnikov responded by licking his chops while voicing his desire to meet a fellow warrior. Mattysse may be a little worn around the edges... But that's a fight I wouldn't miss for anything. I hope its a fight GB considers putting together for the Machine

-Froggy :

Agreed, brownsugar, I think he beats anybody in the division including the ones that supposedly beat him ! I think he still has a very good future in the sport !

-riverside :

We gonna get him maybe in May or September under canelo, looking forward to it. M-H is excited is excited , we think we got what it takes to make Mathysee miss and look lost. Just and inside note.

Lucas Mattysse V Provodnikov is a good fight. If Algieri can fight the Siberian Rocky on the run and (seemingly) win - then Mattysse should be able to entertain us more. I mean it's not like Provodnikov's defence is water tight and he can't take a decent shot. Both guys have good power too. I'd like to see Danny Garcia fight Provodnikov.

-Pazuzu :

Matthysse Provodinkov has FOTY written all over it. Talk about styles making fights. Two rawhide tough jr welterweight warriors who can stand inside and bang like drums. Now we're talking. Also wouldnt mind seeing La Maquina in a rematch against Garcia or against Broner this year. I think he'd batter The Problem into a late round TKO. We'll see if Broner has the stones to take the match.

Garcia V Rios may be a good barnburner too.

I feel personally Lucas is more than a B side fighter, I think he's deserving of a belt at 140 and will get one eventually and hold onto it for sometime. Against Provodnikov? I hope he signs to make that fight because Artie and Vadim are chasing Lucas to get the signature for a bout. Provodnikov doesn't want to be left out of the mix again like he was when he was holding a world championship belt. He was robbed of it and now he's looking to get straight back to where he was and anyone in his way will be mauled into submission. If Lucas and Ruslan are allowed to go at it then it will be one of the best fights as Paz says, and I've got Provodnikov winning. That determination to win, to succeed against all odds and put every single ounce of yourself in your biggest fight we didn't get to see from Matthysse when he fought Garcia. It took a John Molina to get it out of him, and Molina isn't special. Motivation issues Matthsse? Provodnikov was willing to go out on his shield against Bradley and Alvarado, he should be a two weight world champion with ZERO losses (the only disputable and most hotly contested fight was against El Maestro Herrera, and that man too deserves a mention for he's sharing the same cab as Ruslan with all these decisions). Provodnikov's pressure will ultimately burst Matthysse's pipe, and he'll cave before 6.

I got u there! Provo vs El maestro was a toss up decision draw was fair. Is like to see him vs Mathysee both will not back down! M-H sparred with Lucas . He believes ruslan will ko Lucas. Good luck to team Provo.

Rios V Provodnikov; for Rios' WBO welterweight belt? Even at a catchweight it would be a good fight.

The best thing for fight fans about this news...it does not involve Al Haymon. Reportedly as part of the agreement to sign with Golden Boy, Matthyssee will no longer be advised by Haymon. So this means first off that a fight between him and Provodnikov is a real possibility. And there is no doubt that fight would produce some major fireworks and be a certain fight of the year if not fight of the decade type fight. Also, with Terence Crawford moving to 140 a fight down the line with Matthysse could be very possible. And that would be a very interesting clash of styles.

T-Craw would tear him apart. Lu-See has always been more hype than fight. And even T-Craw to a slight degree is a superhype. He is all dat and a bag of chip, but not the lemonade. Give the dude some space and let him move at the right pace. Holla!

Lucas vs. Russian Rocky is an excellent matchup. It's just gonna be another sensational fight in what is truly shaping up as a sensational year--with or without $$$May-Pacquiao & Cotto-Canelo. Many of the fights we want to see made WILL be made this year. -Randy G.

Sherdog cites an anonymous source saying the fight has been made and will be March 28 at the Stub Hub Center. I have not seen any official announcement from GBP or Banner Promotions, and I am VERY skeptical about 'unnamed sources,' especially in this industry. But my fingers are crossed for this one...
