IF IT’S THURSDAY IT MUST BE MACAU!

FINAL ZOU SHIMING: FISTS OF GOLD

PRESS CONFERENCE TO BE STREAMED LIVE

FROM THE VENETIAN MACAO

TODAY! -- 11:30 P.M. ET / 8:30 P.M. PT

www.toprank.tv

MACAU (4 April 2013) – It is T-Minus two days and counting until world championship boxing premieres in Macau and the Shiming Dynasty begins! P.T. Barnum, Florenz Ziegfeld and Cecil B. DeMille combined could not create the excitement and anticipation that is rocking this Asian region as it prepares for its Olympic athletic hero ZOU SHIMING to make his professional debut. Headlining Zou Shiming: “Fists of Gold” – an eight-bout card featuring two world championship rumbles -- Shiming, the two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and three-time World Amateur Champion hailing from the Peoples Republic of China and trained by Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, will dive into the professional waters against Eleazar Valenzuela (2-1-2, 1 KO), of Gusave, Sinaloa, México, in a four-round flyweight bout.

Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd, in association with Tecate, this brilliant event will be televised to the U.S. on Saturday, April 6, beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO2. Calling the action from ringside at the CotaiArena™, The Venetian® Macao-Resort-Hotel will be broadcasting icons Tim Ryan and Larry Merchant and two-time heavyweight champion Big George Foreman.

The telecast will also feature two-time World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight champion ROMAN "Rocky" MARTINEZ defending his title against undefeated No. 1 contender DIEGO MAGDALENO and World Boxing Association (WBA)/WBO flyweight champion BRIAN "Hawaiian Punch" VILORIA defending his unified titles against Top-10- contender JUAN FRANCISCO ESTRADA.

Here are some quick notes:

· Today’s press conference will be streamed live at 11:30 p.m. ET / 8:30 p.m. PT via www.toprank.tv.

· Saturday’s international telecast, produced by Top Rank, will be seen in over 40 countries.

· Close to 75% of the tickets in the 15,000-seat CotaiArena have been sold.

· Top Rank has flown over 100 people into Macau to produce this mega event.

TODAY’S QUOTABLES:

Freddie Roach

· Zou Shiming is going to be a world champion in a short time – possibly inside one year. And I think he can do it in fewer fights than Leon Spinks, another Olympic Gold Medalist. Spinks dethroned Muhammad Ali in his seventh professional fight. I think Zou can do it by his sixth professional fight if not sooner.

· Zou has been at weight for most of this week. He is disciplined, smart and just plain good. He has impressed me on a daily basis. He is such a quick study.

· He’s a great student. He has so much talent. Anyone who can win two Olympic gold medals and three World Amateur Championships, you know he has to have talent. I think his amateur experience and accomplishments will take him a long, long way as a professional.

Zou Shiming

· Freddie has taught me a lot – including how to launch my power from my legs. How I can give my opponent body shots. A lot of things. He’s made me more skilled.

· In training camp with Freddie I have to avoid as many power punches from my sparring opponents as I can. I constantly need to remind myself this is not Olympic-style games. This is real. This is professional boxing.

· I am so excited for Saturday night. As big a night as it is for me it is even a bigger night for the sport of boxing and for boxing in China. My goal is to shine as bright a light on the sport in my country and to help advance its development here for amateurs and professionals alike.

Shiming, who trained with Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif., will make his pro debut against Eleazar Valenzuela (2-1-2, 1 KO), of Gusave, Sinaloa, México, in a four-round flyweight bout . One of the most popular Olympic athletes in the People's Republic of China, Shiming is the world's greatest amateur light flyweight, capturing gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. In the 2005, 2007, and 2011 World Amateur Championships, Shiming also brought home gold medals, making him his nation’s first boxing gold medalist in the World Amateur Championships and the Olympics. He became his nation’s first Olympic medalist in boxing when he earned bronze in 2004. Known for his extraordinary speed and superb footwork, thanks to years of martial-arts training, many of Shiming's opponents complain that they cannot keep up with him, much less see his punches coming. He has stated that his heroes are Muhammad Ali and Jackie Chan.

Martinez (26-1-2, 16 KOs), from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, captured his first world title in 2009, knocking out defending champion Nicky Cook out in the fourth round in front of Cook's countrymen in Manchester, England. Martinez successfully defended the title twice -- both by knockout -- during his one-year reign before losing it via a 12-round decision to Ricky Burns. He regained the title last September, winning a gritty split decision over top-rated contender Miguel Beltran, Jr. Martinez retained his title on January 19, surviving a challenge from Juan Burgos, which was judged Draw.

Magdaleno (23-0, 9 KOs), of Las Vegas, Nev., enters this fight having won six of his last eight fights by way of knockout. He captured the vacant NABF super featherweight title in 2011 by knocking out Marcos Leonardo in the fifth round and successfully defended that title five times during his title reign, which lasted through 2012, against top contenders who had a combined record of 137-31-5 when he fought them, en route to his No. 1 contender position.

Viloria (32-3, 19 KOs), a native Filipino who hails from of Waipahu, HI, is a two-division, three time world champion. The former U.S. Olympian captured his first world title, the World Boxing Council (WBC) light flyweight crown, in 2005, knocking out defending champion Eric Ortiz in the first round. He held the title for nearly one year before losing it Omar Nino. He earned his second world title in 2009, knocking out International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior flyweight champion Ulises Solis in the 11th round. After losing that title to Carlos Tamara the following year Viloria moved up to the flyweight division. He captured the WBO world title in 2011, upending defending champion Julio Miranda via a unanimous decision. After two successful defenses of his crown -- both by knockout -- Viloria unified the flyweight titles last November 17, knocking out WBA champion Hernan Marquez in the 10th round. Viloria enters this fight riding a three-year winning streak.

Estrada (22-2, 17 KOs), of Hermosillo, México, returns to the ring for his second straight world title shot. A natural flyweight, Estrada dropped down to challenge undefeated WBA light flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez last November 17, losing a unanimous decision. Now back at his natural fighting shape, Estrada will be looking to bring the flyweight world championship belts back to México.

The knockout king now steps into the ring against a respected veteran in Harrison who harbours his own dreams of reaching the top and fulfilling his potential.

The pair will clash in a 12-round heavyweight showdown with the victor propelling themselves into world title contention.

"There's nothing like the day before, the morning of and night after you've claimed VICTORY," said Wilder. "The emotion, the excitement and adrenaline rush that I have is ready to explode out of me. "Deontay is a fast, dangerous puncher, but he has not been tested as a pro," said Harrison. "I have lot of respect for him, so it's not personal, but this is the door I must walk through. Lose and it's over, win and I'm in the top ten for sure, eligible to challenge for the world title. Biggest risk, for the biggest reward. It can't get any better than that."

Also featured on the undercard will be former Unified Lightweight World Champion Nate "The Galaxxy Warrior" Campbell (36-10-1, 26 KO's) of Jacksonville, Florida who takes on the exciting undefeated Manchester prospect Terry "Turbo" Flannigan (19-0, 5 KO's) in a 10-round lightweight bout.

"I'm looking forward to showcasing my talents against a former world champion in Nate Campbell," said Flannigan. "This is the type of fight I have been waiting for and I'm ready to move up to the next level and prove that I belong there. It's going to be tough, but come the end of the fight, I have no doubt it will be my hand that is raised."

British fight fans will also be able to enjoy a simmering local rivalry with a Lancashire-Yorkshire battle set as former British Champion Gary "Five Star" Sykes (23-3, 5 KO's) puts his English super-featherweight crown on the line against Jon "2 Smokes" Kays (16-2-1, 4 KO's) in a 10-round clash.

No love has been lost between the duo and the April 27 card is all set for fireworks when they go head-to-head.

"John Kays is a good fighter so I will need to be at my best," said Sykes. "I know what to expect, but I'm confident and believe that my experience is going to help me. I'm coming off of a good winning streak and hope to put myself back into the mix for a British title shot by winning. I'm focused and am ready for this fight. I'm not giving up my English title to anyone."

"I'm going into this fight ready to give it everything," said Kays. "This is my time and I won't let anyone take it away from me. I'm super fit, have a good boxing brain and know I have the ability to cause him trouble. It won't be easy, but to get that title I'm willing to do whatever it takes. It's going to be a really exciting fight."

Also appearing on the show will be 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist Anthony Ogogo of Lowestoft making his professional debut against Kieron Gray (5-13-1, 1 KO) of Telford in a six round middleweight fight and the younger brother of Amir Khan, Haroon Khan making his professional debut against an opponent to be determined in a four-round bantamweight fight. Plus, Manchester's Adrian Gonzales (6-1) facing Marc Callaghan (19-32-1, 4 KO's) of Barking in a six-round welterweight battle, Jack Catterral (3-0, 2 KO's) of Chorley taking on Marc McKray (4-18-1, 3 KO's) of Manchester in a four-round welterweight fight, Tomasz Mazurkiewicz (5-8-2, 1 KO) of Warsaw, Poland up against Doncaster's Adam Jones (2-3) in a four-round junior middleweight fight and Carl Spencer (2-0, 2 KO's) of Doncaster featured in a four round heavyweight bout.

Rico Ramos To Fight Oscar Gonzalez PDF Print E-mail
Written by The Sweet Science
Monday, 01 April 2013 12:50

Sherman Oaks, CA (April 1) - Former world champion Rico "Suave" Ramos takes on Mexico's Oscar "Fantasma" Gonzalez in the featherweight main event broadcast by the very popular ESPN "Friday Night Fights" series on Friday, April 12 at the beautiful Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, WA.

Ramos (21-2, 11 KOs) lost his WBA junior featherweight world title to Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux, who many consider the greatest Cuban boxer ever, and now faces upset minded Gonzalez (17-2, 13 KOs) with the winner placing them in contention for a world championship bout. In the semi-main bout, Farah Ennis (20-1, 12 KOs) will challenge the heavy-handed Francisco Sierra (25-7-1, 22 KOs) of Mexico in a super middleweight clash.

The world-class night of boxing is being promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions and will take place in the Skookum Creek Event Center at Little Creek.

Los Angeles native Ramos, 25 is set on regaining his world championship status and a return to prominence by taking on the very tough task in Gonzalez to do it. The hard-hitting and durable Gonzalez, a native of Mexico City, has his thoughts on adding the former world champion to his resume.

The speedy Ramos lost a close decision two months ago and is anxious to turn things around. "I can't wait to get back into the ring and get back to my boxing style and winning ways. I was very disappointed with my last performance and have made that commitment of 'whatever it takes' attitude to turn things around," said Ramos. "I know I have the skills, talent and determination to take my career back to the world championship level. I am really grateful that I have the ESPN platform to showcase all of the hard work that I have put into the gym. My dedication will be evident to all of those fans that are ringside and watching me on ESPN on fight night."

Gonzalez, 23, who is promoted by former multi-world champion Erik Morales and Mexico's Zanfer Promotions, understands that a victory over Ramos can put him back on track for his career goal, a world title. The fight is scheduled for 10-rounds and will prove significant for the man that emerges victorious.

"I've seen Ramos fight before and I don't believe he's going to be able to take my punches," said Gonzalez. "Ramos is a talented fighter and a win over him, especially when I knock him out cold, will put me in a good position."

Promoter Dan Goossen echoed the sentiments of the fighters, "A career is on the line in the Ramos-Gonzalez fight. The winner moves on and the loser moves out. Can't have any more at stake than that."

Continued Goossen, "In the Ennis-Sierra bout, we will find out if Farah has what it takes to add his name to the likes of the other top super middleweights in the world. I know one thing, Sierra has spoiled many fighter dreams and he won't give up an inch to Ennis when the bell rings."

Little Creek Casino Resort is home to the highly acclaimed Salish Cliffs Golf Club and also recently celebrated the opening of Seven Inlets Spa, Skookum Spirit Cigar and Wine Lounge and a state-of-the-art RV Park.

Damian Frias Fights in NY on Thursday PDF Print E-mail
Written by The Sweet Science
Monday, 01 April 2013 09:26

MIAMI (March 31, 2013) - Unheralded Cuban-born welterweight Damian "Devo" Frias (19-6-1, 10 KOs) has an opportunity this Thursday night (April 4) in New York City to turn his career around, if he can upset former NABA champion Ionut "Jo Jo" Dan Ion (30-2, 17 KOs) in an eight-round battle between two southpaws who've never been stopped.

Ion vs. Frias will air live as part of the "Broadway Boxing" series on FIGHT NOW TV TM - America's only 24-hour combat sports and entertainment channel - starting at 9 p.m. ET, from the historic Roseland Ballroom in midtown Manhattan. It will also be streamed live online at www.gfl.tv.

The Romanian-born Ion, who now lives and trains in Montreal, is rated No. 5 by the World Boxing Council (WBC). Ion's only losses as a professional have been 12-round decisions to Selcuk Aydin in a pair of WBC Silver title fights.

Frias, fighting out of Miami, has only been boxing the past six years. He already has one major upset to his credit having defeated 21-1-1 Henry Crawford (TKO9) in 2011. "I'm looking at this as the most important fight of my life," Frias said about his Apr. 4 showdown with Ion. "He's rated and I want his spot. If I beat him, it won't be like when I beat Crawford. After the Crawford fight, it was, OK, what's next?

"I'm at a good place right now, perfect for this fight. My personal life is going very well and I've been in the gym training since August. If the knockout comes, great, but I've trained to go the full distance."

Frias' manager, Si Stern, believes Frias has gotten his act together and is a dangerous opponent for Ion. "Damian is a very, very tough kid who is strong and has no fear," Stern remarked. "He is as tough as tough can be, a gym rat who's never been stopped. His mind is right going into this fight - physically, mentally and emotionally - unlike for some in the past. He should have a few more wins than he does but he's fought a lot of guys on the road. This is a very important fight for him because he can turn his career around with a win. Damian is going to be a very difficult opponent for Ion, who has a big name, and it's going to be an interesting fight."

In his last fight, Frias lost a 10-round split decision (96-93, 92-97, 94-95) to undefeated Kazak lefthander Vitaliy Demyanenko in November. "I felt I won that fight," the 31-year-old Frias added. "His promoter had his back, I don't have a promoter. I felt I won that fight and I told him that afterwards in the ring. I was in a good fight against an undefeated guy. Ion is a strong southpaw, similar to my last opponent. This guy steps back and throws a lot of punches. I saw a couple of things he does that I plan to take advantage of. I'm up for this challenge."

Angelo Santana Headlines April 12 "ShoBox" PDF Print E-mail
Written by The Sweet Science
Friday, 29 March 2013 14:47

LAS VEGAS—Undefeated lightweight Angelo “La Cobra” Santana (14-0, 11 KOs), from Miami, Fla., will face Carlos Cardenas (20-6-1, 13 KOs), from Barinas, Venezuela, for the World Boxing Association interim lightweight championship, and undefeated super lightweight prospect Amir “Young Master” Imam (8-0, 7 KOs), from Albany, N.Y., meets Jeremy “Hollywood” Bryan (16-2, 7 KOs), from Paterson, N.J., in the co-feature on Friday, April 12 at Treasure Island Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

The ShoBox: The New Generation doubleheader will be televised live on SHOWTIME beginning at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). It will take place in the Treasure Island Ballroom and is promoted by Don King Productions in association with Treasure Island.

Tickets to the event—all priced at $100 each, plus tax and fees—are on sale now and can be purchased through the Treasure Island box office or by calling (866) 712-9308 or (702) 894-7723. Doors open at 3 p.m. PT, and a full undercard will be presented prior to the televised matches.

The 12-round world championship fight will be the first for both Santana and Cardenas, The WBA’s No. 3- and No. 4-ranked contenders, respectively. Santana, a 24-year-old southpaw, was a two-time national champion in Cuba before defecting to Miami to follow his dreams of winning a boxing title. Blessed with heavy hands, he has stopped his last seven opponents in five rounds or less.

In a sensational performance, Santana served notice that he was a force to be reckoned with by registering a third-round technical knockout out over world-class contender Justin Savi on June 23, 2012, at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Fla.

Santana won his last fight on ShoBox with a scintillating fifth-round knockout on Nov. 16 over previously undefeated Johnny Garcia—who gained attention in early 2012 by out-pointing Cuban prospect Yordenis Ugas. Santana scored three knockdowns, one in the first and two in the fifth. He finished Garcia in an ESPN.com Knockout of the Year candidate with a picturesque right-left combination.

Cardenas is a tough Venezuelan who campaigned at super featherweight until last year. He was a two-time WBC Continental Americas champion as well as a WBC FECARBOX regional champion.

At 28, he possesses an age and experience edge over Santana. While this will be the first 12-round match for Santana, Cardenas will be making his seventh appearance in a 12-round fight.

Promoter Don King sees similarities between boxers, civil rights pioneers and the American dream.

“I have named the event Fight For Freedom …The Dream Lives On in dedication to all the Freedom Fighters and trail blazers who fought for a better America,” King said. “My boxer Angelo Santana risked his life on a raft from Cuba with 27 others, braving the hazards of the ocean and inclement weather to arrive in the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. The Dream lives on.”

“On the night of this fight, it will be exactly 31 years since we lost the inimitable and incomparable ‘Brown Bomber’ Joe Louis. I remember a memorial we had at Caesars Palace with me and Frank Sinatra on behalf of the great champion of freedom and the boxing world. Remember what Joe said during World War II: ‘We can’t lose because God is on our side.’ The Dream lives on.

“I recently saw that Warner Bros. will launch their new movie “42” on the night of our fight. Branch Rickey broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball on April 15, 1947, and now Jackie Robinson is an American hero. The Dream lives on.

“Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. An assassin took him from us on April 4, 1968. They killed the body, but his Dream lives on as evidenced by the fact that 45 years later we have an African American President in the White House. I must add to that a quote from Frederic Douglass: ‘Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightening.’”

King also wanted to thank Treasure Island Resort & Casino owner Phil Ruffin for hosting the event.

“Phil Ruffin is another great American and businessman personified. I love Phil and I believe he and Angelo Santana will make history in a night remembered for Angelo’s great performance.”

The eight-round ShoBox co-feature showcases two very accomplished amateurs that are gaining notice as professionals. Imam, 22, will be facing his toughest opponent to date in the more experienced Bryan, 27.

The fast-handed power-punching Imam, a 2011 U.S. Olympic alternate, has won all but one of his fights by knockout. Since winning a four-round decision in his pro debut on Nov. 5, 2011, Imam has won seven fights in a row by knockout, all inside four rounds.

Bryan was a National Golden Gloves Champion and national under-19 champion who notched wins over current WBA/WBC 140-pound world champion Danny Garcia and former world-title challenger John Molina in the amateurs. Bryan, a pro since November 2007, is coming off the biggest win of his career, an eight-round unanimous decision over former European champion Yuri Romanov on Jan. 4 in Miami.

In the top non-televised undercard bout, Ryan “The Irish Outlaw” Coyne (21-0, 9 KOs), from St. Louis, and Marcus Oliveira (24-0-1, 19 KOs), from Lawrence, Kan., will collide in a battle of unbeatens in a WBA light heavyweight elimination bout. The two were to have met on the undercard of Bernard Hopkins vs. Tavoris Cloud on March 9 before Coyne suffered a cut during training that resulted in a postponement.

The winner of Coyne vs. Oliveira, scheduled for 12 rounds, will become the No. 1-ranked light heavyweight by the WBA and the mandatory challenger to its champion, Beibut Shumenov.

Coyne gained attention while campaigning as a cruiserweight when he was chosen to participate in the fourth season of The Contender. He made it to the semi-finals before suffering an accidental headbutt that forced him to leave the competition. In his final fight at cruiserweight, Coyne captured the World Boxing Council United States Championship with a unanimous decision over the previously undefeated David McNemar on June 25, 2011.

Coyne is 3-0 since moving down to the 175-pound limit in October 2011.

Oliveira has shown considerable power by winning 19 of his 25 matches by knockout, a 76% knockout ratio. He scored a pair of third-round knockouts in fights against his most notable opponents: former cruiserweight world champion Kelvin “Concrete” Davis in 2008 and Antwun Echols on Jan. 28, 2012.

New York, NY (3/28/13) - On Thursday, April 4, DiBella Entertainment's Broadway Boxing series returns to Roseland Ballroom in New York City with a stacked 10-bout card featuring an array of talent from top to bottom. As previously announced, the card will feature former WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (29-2, 8KO's), and top contenders Luis "Orlandito" Del Valle (16-1, 11KO's), WBC #6-rated welterweight Ionut "Jo Jo" Dan Ion (30-2, 17KO's) and Gabriel "Tito" Bracero (21-1, 4KO's).

Foreman will square off against Gundrick King (18-9, 11KO's) in a six-round junior middleweight matchup, while Del Valle, now training with Hall-of-Fame trainer Nacho Beristain, will see action against Andre Wilson (13-5, 11KO's) in an eight-round featherweight contest.

Ion is set to meet Damian Frias (19-6-1, 10KO's) in an eight-round welterweight showdown, while Bracero squares off against Pavel Miranda (19-9-1, 10KO's) in an eight-round junior welterweight matchup.

The remainder of the card features some of the most promising young talent on the DBE roster, including undefeated prospects "The Notorious" Travis Peterkin (7-0, 4KO's), Patrick "All" Day (2-0, 2KO's) and Heather "The Heat" Hardy (4-0).

Also scheduled to see action on the card is undefeated Bryant "Peewee" Cruz (2-0, 2KO's) and 50 Cent's SMS Promotions' Luis Olivares (1-0, 1KO) and Donte Strayhorn (pro debut).

The fight next Thursday will be Peterkin's fourth consecutive bout at Roseland Ballroom since signing with DBE in late 2012. The former Golden Gloves champion and Brooklyn-native Peterkin has impressed in each outing and continues to improve each and every time he steps into the ring. With power in both hands and an aggressive come-forward style, Peterkin is quickly becoming one of the most talked about prospects on the NY boxing scene. The southpaw light heavyweight is scheduled to face Daniel Garcia (5-2-1, 3KO's) in a six-round matchup.

The former #1-ranked US amateur Day has yet to see the second round as a professional, scoring two equally impressive first-round TKOs in his previous bouts, both in 2013. A native of Freeport, Long Island, the 20-year-old Day, like Peterkin, is truly one of the bright young stars on the DBE roster. Day is set to see action against Yosmani Abreu (3-6-1) in a four-round junior middleweight contest.

Each time the female bantamweight Hardy steps into the ring, it seems as though her fan base grows. Always sporting her Irish-native colors, the Brooklynite Hardy has improved and impressed from each bout to the next. Hardy is scheduled to take on Mikayla Nebel in a rematch of their bout from last August. In that bout, which was an absolute war and Hardy's pro debut, Nebel scored a knockdown in the first round, with Hardy sweeping the next three rounds on all three judges' scorecards to win a close unanimous decision. This will be the first time that both Hardy and Nebel fight in a bout scheduled for six rounds.

Cruz, a 2012 National Golden Gloves finalist, turned pro in December 2012, scoring a third-round TKO over Jonathan Caban. He followed up that performance with a fourth-round TKO over Pedro Andres in February and looks to do the same next Thursday. Cruz is set to square off against Antoine Knight (2-2, 1KO) in a four-round junior lightweight matchup.

The card is promoted by DiBella Entertainment (DBE) and sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group, Newlio.com, and Everlast. The event will be broadcast live on FIGHT NOW TV and on broadband through GFL.TV. SNY will broadcast the event tape-delayed. Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased through Ticketmaster by calling (800) 745-3000. Tickets are priced at $125, $85, $65 and $45 and may also be purchased at Roseland Ballroom's box office tomorrow evening. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ET with the first bout scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
