NEW YORK, NY (May 20, 2013) – Ring 8 will pay tribute to the late, great matchmaker Johnny Bos tomorrow night (Tuesday, May 21 starting at 7:00 p.m. ET) at historic Waterfront Crabhouse, in Long Island City, New York.
Many of Bos’ friends, family and associates have been invited to attend tomorrow's Ring 8 monthly meeting in an effort to raise funds to help defray the costs of Bos’ funeral. One-hundred percent of all proceeds raised tomorrow from new Ring 8 membership fees ($30.00 per year entitles each member to a buffet dinner at Ring 8 monthly meetings), as well as any group or individual donations, will go directly towards Bos’ funeral expenses.
The eccentric Bos – known as “The Wizard of Bos” – helped develop the careers of countless boxers over the years, particularly in New York, as a matchmaker and advisor. Some of “Bos’ boxers” include Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield. Pernell Whitaker, Gerry Cooney, Paulie Malignaggi, Joey Gamache, Yuri Foreman, Jameel McCline and Tracy Harris Patterson.
“We just became aware of this situation (funeral expense needs) over the weekend and Ring 8 wanted to help,” Ring 8 president Bob Duffy said. “All monies raised will go directly to Johnny’s family towards his funeral expenses. Ring 8 member and Johnny’s close friend, Don Majeski, was the driving force in this effort.
“Anybody from New York who has been involved in boxing for the past 25 years or more, if asked to identify one person in New York boxing, would say Johnny Bos. He was a boxing icon who everybody knew and respected. He was a tough guy to make matches with, though, because he always knew what he was doing. Johnny Bos was a great guy and Ring 8 is privileged to pay tribute to him.”
ABOUT RING 8: Formed in 1954 by an ex-prizefighter, Jack Grebelsky, Ring 8 became the eighth subsidiary of what was then known as the National Veteran Boxers Association – hence, RING 8 – and today the organization’s motto still remains: Boxers Helping Boxers.
RING 8 is fully committed to supporting less fortunate people in the boxing community who may require assistance in terms of paying rent, medical expenses, or whatever justifiable need.
Go on line to www.Ring8ny.com for more information about RING 8, the largest group of its kind in the United States with more than 350 members. Annual membership dues is only $30.00 and each member is entitled to a buffet dinner at RING 8 monthly meetings, the third Tuesday of every month, excluding July and August. All active boxers, amateur and professional, are entitled to a complimentary RING 8 yearly membership.

May 19, 2013 - Gary Shaw Productions in association with Grange Old School Boxing, Matchroom Boxingand Greg Cohen Productions are pleased to announce the finalization of a fight between two of the middleweight division's best and most exciting as IBF champion Daniel Geale (29-1, 15 KOs) has signed on to defend his title against highly regarded contender Darren Barker (25-1, 16 KO's). The 12-round championship bout will take place at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York on August 17, 2013. The event will be televised live on HBO BOXING AFTER DARK® beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT.
Geale is fresh off of his redemption win over Anthony Mundine in their January rematch, while Barker has won 2 in a row since his KO loss in what was a very spirited effort against Sergio Martinez. Geale acknowledges that Barker is a tough challenge, but is quick to remind everyone that he has been matched tough for the past few fights in a row. This will be the first time the Australian superstar has fought on American soil.
"Barker has to be one of the toughest opponents I've faced on paper, but I've been in the ring with world titlists and it remains to be seen whether or not Barker can offer up anything extra," said Geale. "He is a top rated fighter amongst 160 pounders, but in the middleweight division that's saying a lot because the entire division is dangerous. A guy in the top 10 at middleweight would be top 3-4 in almost any other division."
"Fighting in the United States for the first time is truly an honor." Geale continued. "I'm going to give the fans a great night of boxing while representing my country with dignity."
Geale mentioned that he hasn't thought much about a game plan for his opponent, but he will prepare accordingly. While he has yet to put together a strategy on Barker, Geale is familiar with his work, specifically against Martinez and he knows that the fighter that steps in the ring with will likely be better than the one that gave Martinez so much trouble.
"I'm going to have my hands full, that's for sure. Barker gave Martinez all sorts of fits, but he is an even better fighter now and I think he has improved a great deal since the Martinez fight. I'm not sure Martinez could beat Barker now, maybe Martinez planned on fighting Barker before he got too good? I want the fights that will give me the biggest challenges and I plan on handling Barker better than anyone has, it won't be easy but that's what I'll attempted to do," Geale said.
After suffering his first defeat to Sergio Martinez, Barker has bounced back with two consecutive knockout victories. His quest to become a world champion is ever so close and he promises to bring the title back to the UK.
"This is a golden opportunity for me and I feel it's my time to shine," Darren Barker stated. "It's been a tough journey for me but I'm one fight away from realizing my dream and becoming World Champion. I've dedicated my entire life to this sport and since the Sergio Martinez fight I really feel like I've grown as a fighter. I can't wait to bring that IBF World title back to the UK."
Gary Shaw is excited about this fight and he knows that it has huge implications for the division.
"This is a fight that separates the good from the great, the great from the elite. This division is so good that everywhere you look you see tough fights, but Daniel could've taken an easier fight, there are easier fights out there compared to Barker but Daniel wanted this fight. The winner will be in a position to be considered the best middleweight out there," Shaw said.
"It's always exciting whenworld classboxers accept a fight without hesitation, as was the case for this bout," said Garrie Francisco of Grange Old School Boxing. "Daniel has been keen to make a stateside debut for many years, to be defending his crown on a HBO cardis the perfect beginning. A healthy sporting rivalryhas existed between our countries (Australia/England)for 130 years. We would like to thank H.B.O., Gary Shaw and Eddie Hearn for their roles incementingan opportunity to givefans a fight that will be remembered."
Matchroom Boxing's Eddie Hearn is confident his fighter will be victorious.
"Not everyone knows the story about Darren Barker but those that do understand it when I say that few deserve this more," said Eddie Hearn. "This is the fight that Darren wanted so badly and now he's got it. This is a wonderful fight between two incredibly gifted Middleweights, it's a pure 50-50 fight and I know Darren is going to bring it home."
"HBO has been a great supporter of bringing international champions to the United States to showcase their talents. I want to thank Ken Hershman, Kerry Davis, Peter Nelson and the entire staff at HBO for being the pioneers in this area. I know Geale and Barker are very appreciative for this wonderful opportunity." Gary Shaw concluded. |

Currently sporting a 12-fight win streak that includes 10 straight knockouts, Thompson has dispatched Jorge Linares, Moises Castro and Juan Ramon Solis during the streak, establishing himself as perhaps the division's most feared puncher.
Barranquilla, Colombia's Gustavo "Huracan" Sandoval (13-4-1, 11 KO's) is a talented up and comer ready to make his move on the world elite on Saturday. The winner of three of his last four fights, the 21-year-old power hitter is eager to go punch for punch with Thompson in his Yeyo's hometown.
In a 10 round battle for the vacant WBC Youth Intercontinental Lightweight title, 18-year-old Los Mochis phenom Roberto Manzanarez (22-1, 18 KO's) meets 21-year-old Oscar Arenas (24-5, 21 KO's) of Coahuila in a fight many feel has the potential to steal the show from the headliners

The younger brother of Three-Division World Champion Abner Mares, Adan "Speedy" Mares (8-0, 3 KO's) was a solid amateur prospect, compiling a 45-5 record, but his true calling was in the professional game and in February of 2012 he made his debut with a first round body shot knockout over Francisco Cervantes. Since then, he has lit up the Mexican fight scene, showing off speed, power and ring generalship while putting together his perfect pro slate. Now fighting out of Los Angeles, 28-year-old Francisco Vargas (15-0-1, 12 KO's) represented his native Mexico in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, going 1-1 in the prestigious competition. Turning pro in 2010, Vargas has built a strong reputation for his versatile skill set and ring savvy. Last year, he turned up the heat, fighting and winning six times with five of those wins coming by way of knockout. On January 26, Vargas kept his hot streak going with a second round knockout win over Ira Terry and, following the cancellation of his scheduled May 3 bout when his opponent passed out trying to make weight, he will be back in the ring this weekend to take on Chiapas' Cristian Arrazola (7-7-1, 4 KO's) in a lightweight contest scheduled for eight rounds.

BETHLEHEM, PA - WhenNBC Sports Network Fight Nightreturns to the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, PA, Friday, June 14, it will feature a competitive triple header that promises more of the great action the series has become known for. The three hour telecast will begin at 8 PM ET.In addition, all three headliners will find themselves in "must win" fights, critical for their career advancement. The pressure will be great for them to collect a win and remain on track for the big fights that lie ahead for each of them.
Russian knockout artist Sergey Kovalev, 20-0-1, 18 KOs, has built tremendous momentum in the last year. His showy and brutal knockouts over Gabriel Campillo, Lionell Thompson and Darnell Boone, all in the past 12 months, have made him a feared man in the light heavyweight division. He's won fans, polished his record, and climbed the ratings. A slip up now, would derail his momentum and force him backward.
Further, the fight on June 14, is a 12-round IBF Elimination Bout that could vault the winner into a title shot. Talk about "must win". Kovalev must defeat Cornelius "Da Beast" White, 21-1, 16 KOs, of Houston, TX, on June 14th to keep moving forward. Another big KO would certainly help his cause, but White will be looking to play the spoiler and leapfrog over the better known light heavyweight.
Like Kovalev, Philadelphian Bryant Jennings, 16-0, 8 KOs, needs to win in Bethlehem. "By By" is coming off his breakthrough year when he went from unknown heavyweight prospect to bona fide contender. Jennings fought and won five times in 2012, but June 14th will be his first start of this year.
Currently Jennings isranked #3 in the IBF, which means he is on the brink of a world championship opportunity. To stay on track for that, he cannot afford a loss. Jennings will face Andrey Fedosov, 24-2, 19 KOs, a Russian heavyweight now living and fighting out of Hollywood, CA, in a 10-round co-feature bout. He's won three in a row and is aching to breakthrough, much like Jennings did last year. If he can topple the Philadelphian next month, he certainly will get the attention he desires.
Welterweight Ronald Cruz, 17-1, 12 KOs, will also have his back against the wall on June 14. However, Cruz must win for a very different reason than Kovalev and Jennings. Cruz, of Bethlehem, PA, returns to the ring for the first time since suffering his first professional loss. Last September, Cruz dropped a close split decision to Antwone Smith in the same Bethlehem ring.
To complicate things, Cruz' return was delayed due to surgery to repair a hernia last winter. Now 100% healthy, Ronald will be raring to go on fight night. However, he may have his hands full on June 14th.
Facing Cruz will be the hard-hitting, Bronx-based Ray Narh, 25-2, 21 KOs, of Ghana. Narh is a battle-tested pro who brings more experience, a higher knockout percentage, and a height advantage into the bout. However as usual, hometown hero Cruz is expected to bring out his loyal Bethlehem fan base, who will support their man 100% and help to level the playing field in this pick 'em fight.
This jam-packed triple header will be the 4th edition ofNBC Sports Network Fight Nightin 2013 and will begin at 8PM ET. By the looks of the stakes in each bout, it might be the best so far.
ABOUT FRIDAY, JUNE 14
The Jennnings-Fedosov, Kovalev-White and Cruz-Narh fights top a seven-bout card at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem. Doors open at 6:15pm ET. Tickets priced at $50 and $75 and $130 (luxury suites) can be purchased through the offices of Peltz Boxing (215-765-0922) and at all Ticketmaster outlets (800-745-3000). Competing in an intriguing 10-round light heavyweight bout will be Washington, D.C. prospect Thomas Williams (13-0, 10 KO's) and veteran Otis Griffin (24-12-2, 10 KO's) of Sacramento, California. The 25-year-old Williams is already 2-0 in 2013, stopping 8-1 Jason Smith and 20-7 Kevin Engel in three rounds each. The winner of the reality program "The Next Great Champ," Griffin is a former USBA Light Heavyweight Champion looking to get back on track after some tough recent outings.
The blockbuster undercard will also see the return of Anthony Peterson (31-1, 20 KO's) after a 17-month layoff. LEGENDARY MICHAEL BUFFER ON BOARD FOR
‘MONTE-CARLO MILLION DOLLAR SUPER FOUR’
Rodney Berman of South Africa’s Golden Gloves has confirmed that Hall of Famer, Michael Buffer will be doing ring-announcing duties for the final of the “Monte Carlo Million Dollar Super Four” tournament in Monaco on July 13.
Berman says it is only fitting that the legendary announcer, known for his catchphrase “Let’s Get Ready To Rumble”, does duty at such a major tournament. “He is a true professional and perhaps the only announcer whose presence resonates internationally,” said Berman. “He’ll be one of a number of stars at the final.”
Berman confirmed that WBA and IBO middleweight world champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, who fought on the first card in March, will attend the final.
An invitation has also been extended to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko to attend, not least to support countrymen Max Bursak and Dmytro Kucher, who fight on the “Million Dollar” undercard.
Golden Gloves intends upon developing a carnival theme in the buildup with meet-and-greet sessions and autograph signings adding to the mystique and magic of Monte Carlo.
Hot-running Edwin Rodriguez (23-0, 15 KOs) of the US and Denis Grachev (13-1-1, 8 KOs) of Russia will meet in the “Super Four” final for a US $1-million purse, to be split 60/40.
Co-headlining be the title fight between WBA and IBO light-welterweight holder Khabib Allakhverdiev (18-0, 8 KOs) and former champion Souleymane M’baye (40-4-1, 22 KOs).
On the undercard, European middleweight champion Max Bursak (26-1-1, 12 KOs) will defend against the UK’s Prince Arron (23-4-1, 5 KOs), while Ilunga Makabu (13-1, 13 KOs) and undefeated Dmytro Kucher (21-0, 15 KOs) will fight for Kucher’s WBC International cruiserweight belt. |

London (May 14)WBC Silver super-middleweight champio James DeGale is excited to be fighting on May 17: “I just want to show my fans what I’m made of, show them what I’ve got and show them what I’m about.”
The former 2008 Olympic gold medalist vows to give his best on his North American debut when he fights Sebastien Demers at Casino Lac-Leamy, Gatineau, Canada, May 17.
“I’m feeling good, very good, I haven’t been out of the gym since the beginning of the year,” DeGale said.
“Obviously I’ve had a couple of fights cancelled on me and postponed, but obviously I’m a true professional - I’ve been in the gym training hard and I’m just looking forward to going out to Canada on May 17th.
“It means a lot to be making my debut in North America, obviously I travelled a lot as an amateur, travelled the world, but I haven't done too much as a pro to be honest.
“With Mick Hennessy and Hennessy Sports’ contacts out in Canada I’ve got this opportunity, so I’m really looking forward to it.
“I just want to show my fans what I’m made of, show them what I’ve got and show them what I’m about.
“I want to put on a great performance out there - slick, skilful, showcase my skills and put on a fantastic show.”
For DeGale, this will be his first fight since dominating former IBO super-middleweight champion Fulgencio Zuniga in Hull back in December, after his clash with Alexander Brand, set for March, was postponed.
Now DeGale will come face to face with Canadian fighter Demers, who fought Arthur Abraham for the IBF middleweight title in 2007 and boasts 31 wins in 36 fights.
The pair meet at Casino Lac-Leamy, Gatineau, Canada, with EOTTM (Eye of the Tiger Management) and Hennessy Sports promoting the event.
“I can't wait to get out to Canada on the 17th of May, fight, put on a great performance and move on and keep on progressing," DeGale said.
“Boxing is big out there, it’s one of their biggest sports, they’ve got some great fighters - so in the future I could be fighting over there again in another big fight.

ZOU SHIMING RETURNING TO MACAO!
Two-Time Chinese Olympic Gold Medallist Headlining an
Exciting Card Featuring Two World Championship Battles
MACAO (May 14, 2013) – Chapter two of the Zou Shiming era will begin when the two-time Olympic gold medallist and three-time Amateur World Champion returns to the ring and headlines an exciting card featuring two world championship fights – WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Estrada vs. Milan Melindo and IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich vs. Mauricio Muñoz – Saturday, July 27, at The Venetian® Macao’s CotaiArena™. Promoted by Top Rank and Sands China Ltd., in association with Tecate, ZOU SHIMING: Fists of Gold II ticket details will be announced soon; Fists of Gold II ticket holders will be able to purchase advance tickets for November’s Pacquiao vs. Rios event during an exclusive period prior to general public sales. Details are to be announced at a later date.
The fantastic night of entertainment is Sands China’s latest world-class sporting event, part of its multi-tiered entertainment strategy aimed at diversifying Macao’s tourism economy through the varied offerings of its Cotai Strip Resorts, contributing to the city’s development into one of Asia’s top entertainment hubs and a world centre of tourism and leisure. Sands China held the highly-successful greater China debut of Ultimate Fighting Championship last November, and has hosted and sponsored numerous sporting events with some of the world’s most well-known athletes – from basketball greats Kobe Bryant and Yao Ming to tennis legends Pete Sampras and Roger Federer, and golf sensations like Rory McElroy and Lee Westwood. Zou Shiming’s recent April 6 professional debut had all the right ingredients and became another high-octane crowd pleaser, selling out tickets in advance. It was televised internationally to more than 30 countries, including to the U.S. via HBO 2 and in China on CCTV5.
"The exciting matches taking place at The Venetian Macao’s CotaiArena on July 27 highlight the fact that boxing is a major global sport," said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum.
“Deciding to host Zou Shiming’s professional debut in April was a great move – for Sands China and for Macao,” said Edward Tracy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sands China Ltd. “We hosted a very successful event, and we remain committed to bringing the world’s best entertainment to Macao, helping to increase the diversity of attractions available. We’re extremely pleased to welcome Shiming back a second time in July for Fists of Gold II.”
"I was very pleased with how quickly Shiming learned what I was teaching during our first training camp and he is the hardest worker in the gym," said Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach. "This time our main focus will be on getting him to punch harder. Shiming will need to learn how to sit down on his punches to maximize their power. I cannot wait to start working with him again."
Zou (1-0), from Guizhou, won his professional debut April 6, via a dominant four-round unanimous decision over gritty Eleazar Valenzuela of Mexico. One of the most popular Olympic athletes in China, Zou was the world's greatest light flyweight, capturing gold medals in the World Amateur Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2011, along with gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. He also owns an Olympic bronze medal from the 2004 games, making him his nation's first Olympic medallist in boxing as well as its first boxing gold medallist in the World Amateur Championships and the Olympics. He signed with Arum’s Top Rank at a press conference in Beijing in January.
Zou, who now campaigns as a flyweight, will be graduating to a six-round bout when he faces Jesus Ortega (3-1, 2 KOs) from Hermosillo, México. A stablemate of world flyweight champion Juan Estrada, the hard-hitting Ortega is an exciting prospect who is entering this fight on a roll, having won his last two fights – his most recent a third-round knockout victory against Arcadio Sanchez on April 19.
"Jesus and I are from Sonora, México,” said Alfredo Lopez, Ortega's trainer. “This is the state in Mexico that has produced champions. The great Julio César Chávez was born here and became champion. Orlando Salido – champion; Tyson Marquez – champion; and current WBO world champion Juan Estrada, with whom we currently train. We know Zou well and have seen him fight. He was a very decorated amateur fighter. But Jesus is no amateur. Jesus spars with the best flyweights in the world, including Juan Estrada and Tyson Marquez. On July 27, Zou Shiming will become another stepping stone on the path to where we are going with Jesus, and that is to become Sonora's next world champion. Viva México! Viva Ortega!"
In addition to Zou's return, the event line-up includes an undercard highlighted by two 12-round world championship fights. WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Estrada (22-2, 17 KOs), of Hermosillo, México, will be making the first defense of the titles he won from Brian Viloria on April 6 at the CotaiArena. Estrada will be facing undefeated Milan Melindo (28-0, 11 KOs), of Manadue, Philippines. Melindo, the number one contender and mandatory challenger, earned his shot at the title by knocking out once-beaten Tommy Seran in the fourth round on the April 6 card. Undefeated IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich (16-0, 8 KOs), a native of Russia, now fighting from Oxnard, California, will be making his first title defense against No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger Mauricio Muñoz (26-3, 12 KOs), of San Juan, Argentina. Gradovich captured the world title on March 1 when he dethroned defending champion Billy Dib via a split decision. Muñoz earned his title shot by defeating previously unbeaten contender Luis Franco in his last fight, October 13, 2012. The international telecast will open with a 10-round heavyweight rumble between undefeated contenders Andy Ruiz, Jr. (18-0, 12 KOs), of Mexicali, Mexico, and Joe Hanks (21-0, 14 KOs), of Los Angeles.
The undercard will also feature Genesis Servania (19-0, 6 KOs), of Cebu City, Philippines, in an eight-round super bantamweight bout against Konosuke Tomiyama (23-5-1, 8 KOs), of Tokyo, Japan; Paul Fleming (17-0, 12 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, in an eight-round super featherweight bout against Mike Tawatchai (26-1-1, 17 KOs), of Bangkok, Thailand; and Dodie Boy Peñalosa (10-0, 8 KOs) and Dave Peñalosa (5-0, 3 KOs), both from Cebu City, Philippines, in separate six-round featherweight and four-round super bantamweight bouts, respectively. Their opponents will be announced at a later date. Fleming and the Peñalosas were all knockout victors on the April 6 card.
