CHICAGO, IL (February 8, 2012) Former world title challenger Edner “Cherry Bomb” Cherry kicks off his 2012 campaign on Friday, February 24th against Puerto Rican Guillermo “The Vampire” Sanchez at Windy City Fight Night 21.
The Cherry/Sanchez eight round junior lightweight bout is featured on another stellar 8 Count Productions professional boxing card at the UIC Pavilion.
A native of Nassau, Bahamas now based in Wauchula, Florida, the 29 year old Cherry, sporting a record of 28-6-2 (16KO’s), will be making the first Chicago start of his ten year professional career.
Recently signed to an exclusive promotional contract with Dominic Pesoli’s 8 Count Productions, HOME OF THE BEST IN CHICAGO BOXING, Cherry is looking towards another world title shot in 2012.
Said Pesoli, “We’re very excited for the opportunity to bring a world class talent like Edner here for the first time. Boxing fans in Chicago are in for a real treat. “
“However, Sanchez is a very game young man who jumped at the opportunity to fight Cherry. He wasted no time when the fight was offered to him and has assured us that he plans to be victorious.”
Known for his sensational performances on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights, Cherry has fought numerous world champions and contenders including Timothy Bradley, Paulie Malignaggi, Stevie Johnston, Jose Armando Santa Cruz, Monty Meza Clay, Jaime Rangel and Ricky Quiles.
Having won his last four by early knockout, Cherry spoke about the bout against Sanchez, his future plans and fighting and training in Chicago.
“This is my first time up in Chicago, it’s taken me a little while to get used to the cold but the sparring and training have been excellent,” said Cherry. “I haven’t seen any tape yet of Sanchez but I’m confident that with my experience I’ll be able to adjust to whatever he tries.”
“For the future, I’d say that I need this fight, then maybe one more then head right to a top 20 rated fighter. There’s no one specific at 130, just the best at that weight. That’s who I want to fight.”
Continued Cherry, ‘I’m ready to impress. I’ve heard the support for boxing in this town is outstanding and I’ll be ready to rumble on the 24th.”
Fighting out of Buffalo, New York, the 23-year-old Sanchez brings a record of 13-4-1 (5KO’s) into the battle with Cherry. A five-year professional, the upset minded Sanchez has faced excellent competition including world champion Adrien Broner and world ranked contender Dominic Salcido.
Known as a crafty, highly skilled southpaw, Sanchez is coming off a close, hard fought ten round decision loss to Cleveland’s Mark Davis on November 12th. Fighting for WBC USNBC super featherweight title, Sanchez aggressively battled the hometown Davis to the final bell.
Cherry has also partnered with the highly regarded management team of Albert Falcon and Pat Doljanin of Warehouse Boxing of Highland Park, Illinois to assist in guiding his future.
Also featured at Windy City Fight Night 21 will feature a Chicago cross-town showdown between local welterweight standouts, Adrian “EL Tigre” Granados and Jaime “The Truth” Herrera.
Advance tickets, priced at $31, $51, $76 and $101 are available through Ticketmaster, (www.Ticketmaster.com), the UIC Pavilion Box Office (Phone 312-413-5740) and the 8 Count Productions Office (312-226-5800).
