Sorry, fans of heavyweight boxing, of Bryant Jennings and Mike Perez. The Cuban big boy hurt his shoulder, and can't go against the Philly contender, according to a release sent out by Jennings' promoter, Gary Shaw (below).

JENNINGS vs. PEREZ CANCELLED DUE TO PEREZ SUFFERING SHOULDER INJURY

Corpus Christ, TX (May 9, 2014) The World Boxing Council Heavyweight Eliminator between BRYANT "By By" JENNINGS and MIKE "The Rebel" PEREZ scheduled for May 24th at the American Bank Arena and telecast on HBO has been cancelled due to Perez suffering a shoulder injury while training.

At the present time the entire show in Corpus Christi TX, has been cancelled.

"I was floored when I got the call this morning from Perez's manager Patrick Thomas that he injured his shoulder in sparring," Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. "Mike is flying back to Ireland to see a shoulder specialist. I'm hoping to hear good news that the injury is not too serious and the fight can be rescheduled in the near future. I know Mike is devastated because of this setback but looks forward to continuing his dream of marching toward a WBC world title fight."

"When I received the news this afternoon that Perez got injured I felt so bad for Bryant because I know how hard he trained for this fight and how much he was looking forward to fighting for this WBC elimination bout," said Gary Shaw. "I'm hope for that Perez's is minor and we can get these guys back in the ring in a timely manner."

This leaves other fighters on the show in a lurch. What about that middleweight clash, pitting Irish-Brit Matthew Macklin and Aussie Daniel Geale? Are they just out of luck, all that training and food deprivation down the drain? According to Macklin advisor Anthony Catanzaro, kinda sorta yes. "I got a call from DiBella Entertainment that the main event was off, and HBO decided to go dark. I spoke to Peter Nelson (of HBO) and he confirmed it. Assuming there was another spot, on another card, for Macklin's fight, there is not the money, it's not sufficient to satisfy both sides," he said, when I wondered if possibly the middleweight clash could get glued onto the June 7 MSG show, co-promoted by DiBella and Top Rank.

Theater of the unexpected can be a big-time bummer, and the collateral damage often goes beyond what many ponder on the surface.

This is a bummer as this would have been another really solid heavyweight fight this month. I hope Perez heals up soon and will be back in action shortly.

I wonder if there is any thought to keeping Jennings on this card and still on the telecast. I even have a suggestion. How about Vyacheslav Glazkov? He is coming off a career best win over Tomasz Adamek and needs another statement victory to solidify his status in the division. He has good skills and is a former Olympic medalist. He also is an aggressive pressure fighter who makes for good television fights.

I think it is worth it from HBO and from Jennings camp to at least explore this option and salvage this HBO appearance. It is short notice so Glazkov may not want to take such a big fight on such notice but it could be an opportunity as well he might not want to pass up. For Jennings camp, if they thought they could handle Perez then they certanily must feel they can handle Glazkov. Just a thought anyway...

El Dude says:

It is a disappointment not just for the fighters but to us fans as well to not be able to see this HW-fight between Mike Perez and Bryant Jennings take place. This fight had KO of the year written all over it and El Dude was ready to write about it. When one door closes another one opens and for us fans there is plenty of boxing. Give Mike some time to heal and rest but when he starts packing he better come rucking at his best. Will Bryant wait for Perez to restore or will he go knocking on the Boxing door for another foe?
El Dude placing Mike on injured reserve.

The Commish says:

Yeh, that is a bummer. We only hope it's not a torn rotator cuff a similar injury which will require surgery and take Perez out of action for the remainder of 2014.

With the Bermande Stiverne-Cris Arreola fight on May 10, the Bryant Jennings-Mike Perez matchup would have injected new life into the stale heavyweight division.

Let's enjoy the Stiverne-Arreola fight and a few other minor heavyweightbouts in May, then await September 4, when we find out if Bulgaria's unbeaten Kubrat Pulev has what it takes to beat Wladimir Klitschko.

Until then, heal well, Mike Perez. We look forward to seeing you soon.
