“TOE TO TOE: CANELO VS. ANGULO” FINAL WEIGHTS

FROM MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA FOR SATURDAY’S FOUR-FIGHT SHOWTIME PPV® TELECAST

We expect the unexpected from some guys, but Canelo Alvarez hasn't been that sort of guy since he turned pro nine years ago. That went out the window in Las Vegas today, when the Mexican heaththrob was over the junior middleweight max of 154 pounds, by one pound. For that transgression, he is paying $100,000 from his purse to foe and fellow Mexican Alfredo Angulo. Angulo too had a scale fail, weighing a half pound over the 154 pound max. But he didn't have to pay for that pound of flesh...

The WBC SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP will be up for grabs at the MGM Grand, on a Golden Boy card to be televised by Showtime PPV.

The penalty fee is added to Angulo's $750,000 minimum, and comes from Canelo's $1.25 million minimum, which should be augmented nicely by PPV sale money.

This card has been something of a rollercoaster of drama, with the Jermall Charlo-Carlos Molina 154 pound showdown getting scrubbed today, because Molina is dealing with legal issues.

Regarding Canelo's scale fail, he can't weight more than 168 at 3 PM PT Saturday, or he will have to pay out another chunk.

Me, I say fighters should enter a fight one point down if they don't make weight, in addition to paying a monetary penalty.

It's not a good look for the sport, as it speaks to their professionalism, and a lack of standards, practices and principles in the game.

No surprise there.

Good idea on a point penalty for missing weight. I agree.

Mad drama with the Molina arrest...

I think this card is going to underachieve due to all the drama included.

However, maybe Canelo will have decent stamina for once.

deepwater2 says:

Canelo will never make 154 again. He is already calling out the winner of cotto vs Martinez at 160. Lara would whoop canelo at 154. Angulos eye won't hold up but I hope he wins .

brownsugar says:

Ha agreed,... Canelo takes a page from the book of Salido
Coming in comfortable and Loaded with Calories to face the first true junior middleweight in his career. (since Trout) The kid will come into the ring weight 171 lbs with a neck the size of Mike Tyson.

Yeah Amayseng,.. I read about Molina's past yesterday... I was mildly shocked about his shady past...... plus he has more immigration issues.
They never tell you about these guys when they're building them up before a fight. I had the impression that Molina was just a hard working guy who pulled himself up by his bootstraps and taught himself boxing from a book. A morally hardworking hardhat guy who could probably walk on water.....never woulda though he had the sex offender tag...

amayseng says:

I try not to jump to conclusions. At first I was disgusted and about to cuss him to the heavens thinking a true child was involved. However, I read yesterday something about him being 18 and a girl being 16, and that he was an idiot who just plead guilty so he wouldnt get jail time, being young not knowing he would be a registered sex offender his entire life. Having said that, I dont know what is true and what isnt, but either way it gives this card a black eye of negativity.

brownsugar says:

See?.... I had the worst possible image, because most articles just throw up "REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER" without the details.
if your scenario is what happened its more like statutory rape than child molestation,.. one of my greatgrandmothers got married at the age of 13, and it was legal in the state of Virginia...

amayseng says:

My great Gma got married at 12 and started having kids at i believe 14. Italian, and an arranged marriage as she came here as a child from the homeland. My gpa was the first born and there were a total of 12 kids. She was like a damn baby factory!
Times have changed. ha

brownsugar says:

your a true G Amayseng... yeah my Grandmom has 12 brothers and sisters too, They were sharecroppers in the south before they moved to beautiful Ohio, no internet, mobile phones, or video games, or cable...... yeah lets breed... lol..

amayseng says:

How ironic Bsug. we come from similar beginnings.

Radam G says:

I told you guys umpteen times about seediness, shadiness, sleaziness and sneakiness in boksing -- the pros and the amateurs. You have to be in the loop to know the poop. C-Mo was sold down the river because he would quiver with given an immediate rematch to you know who. Holla!

brownsugar says:

it's very unfortunate, I was looking forward to seeing what Charlo could do with this super crafty guy.

It seems the charge was from 2007 . 7 years ago. Timing is everything . Who has Charlo's contract and when is it up?

Radam G says:

The Shadow Al Heman will get you if you don't do business with him. C-Mo didn't play ball. Now he's lost it all. He will be stripped and exported, all because he didn't come toTSAH's call. Holla!

Radam G says:

The Charlo twin is one of TSAH's fighter. C-Mo is not and was not, and wasn't suppose to defeat Sugar[less] Shay. But when he did, he was suppose to do things TSAH's way. C-Mo said NO! So he has to GO! Holla!

teaser says:

second time Canelo comes in overweight by a pound ....he did it a couple of years ago and didn't even try then to lose that pound....did he make a second attempt at the scales this time??

Radam G says:

@Teaser, absolutely NO! He set it up from the jump. He's trying not to hit another road bump. Holla!

jzzy says:

This could be the equalizer Angulo's camp was hoping for. In a grueling fight, stamina is paramount, how much did
Canelo suffer to get down to weight? I would'nt want to face Angulo in a weakened state. I now like Angulo's chances,
he's been in tough and may prevail in a WAR!!

SouthPawFlo says:

Canelo is a Middle Weight, there's nothing "junior" about him, if he wins tonight he should fight the winner of the Cotto-Sergio Fight in the Fall after a good Tune-Up at 160 in July..

brownsugar says:

That's the fight he wants SPF

Canelo will never fight jr middle again that is why is is all ready calling out the winner of cotto Martinez . I will eat my shorts if Angulo wins tonight . I'm not eating my shorts because Angulo is hand picked to make canelo look good. Follow the money. The gingerbread man brings in the money for whatever reason. Bet the house and my shorts canelo wins. Probably by tko because ref stopsit on advice from the dr due to the eye problem.

even if charlo could beat Carlos it would be in a rotten ugly boring fight. Ppv customers do not like paying for that. I smell a shadow of course

brownsugar says:

Carlos even made a Kirkland fight ugly........ while beating him at the same time.. Charlo is better than Kirkland. Way better technically... Can go 12 rounds effortlessly, and is one of the most relaxed fighters during a 12 roundfight that you will ever see. I didn't think much of him 2 years ago but he's more than hype and is gradually achieving his potential.

I think he would have gotten a one sided UD over Molina.

Molina just lost $275,000... Regrettable.

Radam G says:

I disagree. So does the shadow Al Hyman. Or he woulda hooked up the bout. C-Mo has a style that would make Money May hustle and bustle.

C-Mo is the "Quietman" Jose Ruiz of the light middleweights. Charlo would have gotten exposed and looked like syet. And C-Mo would have jump ship to Da Bobfather. But TSAH wasn't having it. And used his one-man mafia power.

Boxing is crooked and full of optical illusions inside and outside that squared jungle. And if you are looking out for yourself and have a troubled past, you bungle. Holla!
