Gennady Golovkin stayed busy, staved off rust, and added another one to his win column, stopping challenger Osumanu Adama in Monaco on Saturday. The seventh round ending came when the ref saw the African hitter being unable to adequately defend himself at 1:20. GGG retained his WBA 160 pound crown, and went to 29-0 with 26 KOs, while Adama dropped to 22-4, after being sent to the mat three times while offering as good a challenge as his skills and will would allow.
The underdog from Ghana, who lives in Illinois, had never been stopped, but Golovkin wrecked that streak. He sent Adama down at the end of the first, and GGG ramped up pressure in round three. The Kazahk closed the distance, upped his volume, and slammed with both hands. Adama didn't run, or clinch to survive egregiously. He tried to put off the victory with jabs, but GGG kept coming forward. He ripped left hooks, and sent Adama down again in the sixth, off a left hook high on the head. In the seventh, GGG knocked him down off a jab to start the round. The ref waved the fight off after after Adama ate a left hook, and stumbled back on the ropes. He didn't need to see if Adama could pull off an amazing turnaround.
“I feel terrific, I’m very happy with my performance," Golovkin said after. "From the opening round I was confortable with the fight and felt good about my power and the pace of the fight. He was a tough opponent but I was never hurt during the fight.”
Asked in the ring by TV commentator Brian Mitchell about future bouts, Golovkin stated, “I want to fight Sergio Martinez to prove who’s the best middleweight.”
Stated Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, “We’re very thankful to the Royal Family and Golden Gloves along with SBM Monte Carlo for their help in putting on this sensational event.
“Gennady performed in the manner that we believe he’s the best middleweight in the world. Adama was a very tough opponent but Gennady was truly on his game tonight.”
In regards to what’s ahead for Golovkin, Loeffler stated, “Right now we have offers out to three HBO approved fighters for April 26th at Madison Square Garden and we look forward to returning to New York City with Gennady.”
“We’d also like to thank the countries who purchased this fight giving Gennady’s millions of fans around the world the opportunity to see his performance.”
The bout was shown on Box Nation in the UK.
