I'm curious, any of you folks going to log on to UStream.TV tonight to check out the first legal bareknuckle prizefight since John L. Sullivan beat Jake Kilrain after 75 rounds, back in 1889? “Many people hear the term bareknuckle boxing and immediately think of a vicious street fight or back alley brawl,” said Gunn. “This is a fight between two professionals with referees and doctor’s ringside.” Stewart told me he's looking forward to going mano a mano, and foresees a slugfest, a toe to toe tussle, center ring. Here is a lengthier piece I wrote for ESPN.com http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/6835788/bringing-back-bygone-bareknuckle-era-boxing

The good thing about bareknuckle boxing is that unlike MMA, this will be standup all the way. However, while the idea of bareknuckle fighting evokes images of bleeding and busted faces, its most significant effect is that it limits the action. Unprotected knuckles means having to pull your punches to prevent injuring your fists, while on the receiving end you'd be more cautious knowing how easily your visage could get disfigured. It limits your technique and range of movement. You're not going to see a lot of subtle shifts in angles and you won't find a lot of scientific counter punching. Now this isn't the 18th century and you can expect more discipline and better form behind every punch thrown along with a defensive style modified for bare fists. But you won't see a lot, if any at all, of infighting for practical and obvious reasons. It's simply suicidal for anybody to engage in toe-toe, frehead to forehead infighting with bareknuckles. The only kind of infighting you're most likely to see is the hitting and holding kind during a clinch. Overall once you get past the novelty of facial injuries, you'll realize that the art, grace and beauty of the sweet science are sorely missing. brownsugar says:
BareKnuckles and no mouthgards,.. might as well make it interesting. this is toughman contest without the gloves.
