Golovkin Is "99%" Sure He Could Beat Mayweather

BY Michael Woods ON October 03, 2013

Golovkin10-4-2013 0374dWe are two weeks past Floyd Mayweathers' exemplary showing against Canelo Alvarez, and "Money" is still sucking air from the room. Yesterday, the rumor mill was humming with Floyd-will-fight-Khan talk, which was quickly shot down by all the supposed principals. On Monday night, Danny Garcia fielded press queries about the possibility that he'll go to 147 and face off with Floyd.

Another name that tantalizes the boxing heads is Gennady Golovkin. Lots of folks said they'd like to see Floyd go to 160 to fight Sergio Martinez and just as many, on social media, said they'd be keen to see if the Bieber-faced bomber could drop some of that heavy-handed mayhem on Floyd. Gennady Golovkin vs Floyd Mayweather. Sounds like fun, even if at present day it would take some Hatfields and McCoys kissing and making up in the name of making money...

Sounds like fun to me, anyway...

What about Golovkin? Does the 31-year-old WBA middleweight champion, who has a date set with Curtis Stevens on Nov. 2 at the Madison Square Garden Theater, and on HBO, like the idea of a fight against Mayweather?

"Yes, of course," Golovkin told me on the phone Thursday, shortly before he was to begin a workout with trainer Abel Sanchez in Cali.

I told him that folks seem to like a Mayweather-Martinez bout, but he said he heard Martinez is healing up and looking to dance with Miguel Cotto next spring. As for Garcia, Golovkin said he thinks highly of his skills, but he would not have a "serious chance" to beat Floyd.

And you Gennady? Would you have a good chance to beat Floyd? Would you have the best chance of any of the possibles to beat Mayweather?

"Right," he said. "Sure. Absolutely."

There you go. Have at it, fight fans. Start your debate engines.

"It would be a great fight for everybody, for TV, for the fans," Golovkin said.

And he hasn't been beaten...You sure you can do it? One hundred percent sure?

He paused, and pondered. "Ninety nine percent," Golovkin told me.

Curtis Stevens (seen with Golovkin in Will Hart/K2 photo) is talking a great game ahead of the NYC clash. It wouldn't be prudent to assume he gets the wrecking ball treatment on Nov. 2. But we're in a place where we are allowing our minds to wander, possibly because we haven't fallen in love with a wrecking ball in awhile and our top dogs are graying some around their muzzles, and we we know we'll be needing new blood to keep our perpetually dying sport from asphyxiating. Readers, could the warring parties come together to make a Mayweather-Golovkin fight happen in 2014 or 2015, and if it did, does Golovkin have the sort of power to bother Floyd...and the ability to track him down and touch him? Weigh in, in our Forum.

I think I can beat Paulie Malignaggi.

As did 32 other people.

Matthew says:

This fight will never take place, but if it did, Golovkin would bludgeon Mayweather. I doubt Mayweather would move up to face Martinez, let alone a killer who is still relatively unknown to the general public like Golovkin.

Carmine Cas says:

I want to see if Mayweather even responds

Radam G says:

Wow! 3G ought to move up and fight SOG. Even better, move up and fight the K-bros/docs. They will kick his arse. Why call out a little man? Catch weight fight Money May. Be a man like SuperBad Chad Dawson, and go out on your shield. You wanna fight small, lose the weight and you get the call. And Money May will kick your arse for $50mil and some change. Easy work. Holla!

Thats what I was thinking!! Money may should make a contract and deliver it to GGG, 147 weight limit! lets do it, That Abel Sanchez Guy would try to pull that same Jive, when he trained Terry Norris and always challenging JCC superstar, who was fighting 2 weight divisions lower to fight Norris. Simple for GGG come down to 147.

they asked him a question of course he is gonna respond and who doesnt want that payday?

ill take that fight tomorrow against floyd for that pay day....

at 154 or 160 ggg wins in all kinds of different ways against a still great 36 year old floyd.

floyd is the LINEAL champ at 154 so why not make that fight?

Radam G says:

Maybe at 160, 3g will win. But at a starved-down 154, Money May would kick his butt worse than he did the super-hyped red-haired Canelo. Size -- within a certain limit -- doesn't matter. It is skills that pay the bills. Canelo was 165lbs the night of the bout. Money May was a buck 49, I believe. Holla!

I don't even know why people are even discussing this. Dead ends on dead ends on dead ends. Politically, he's tied to HBO for the near and distant future. So that's a dead end.

From a business standpoint, he's not a PPV attraction. He hasn't been on PPV. He doesn't have a built-in ethnic following that would justify throwing him on PPV. Another dead end.

From a sporting sense, he hasn't even competed at the weight. Before people start clamoring for it, let's see if a) the guy can even make and compete at the weight and b) let him have a freakin' fight at 154 first!

People say a lot of things. Chad Dawson and Andre Ward both talk about winning heavyweight championships. Should that qualify them for a matchup with the Klitschkos?

B-Hop wants to fight Pacquiao. Typical fighter hubris.

Let GGG fight Lara, Trout and/or Canelo at 154 -- then he might qualify for the discussion from a sporting sense.

This reminds me of when Ray Leonard heisting the WBC light heavyweight championship while Evander Holyfield was recognized as the premier cruiserweight.

Or when Roy Jones supposedly should fight a 6-5 Lennox Lewis, although he clearly said his heavyweight foray was a part-time thing.

Or when a lightweight Floyd Mayweather called out Winky Wright at 154. Oh, wait...

There's always a boogeyman.

Radam G says:

Ditto, The Shadow! Thanks for looking out and smacking to those who needed that.

Danggit! The boogeyman has got all up in their koolaid. And -- to be boxer in demand -- they don't understand the prize that has to be paid. Nobody and dey top ho will get 3g a shot at JACK! He ain't no boksing MACK! He needs to get his arse in the back of the pack. The right connections, he and his team LACK!

It's all about the BIG pay, FIRST and Foremost, always! Holla!

good point i have stated elsewhere a hundred times if 154 is healthy for ggg then he wins, if not then no.
canelo would have been beaten the same way at 154. **** if canelo weighed in at 160 floyd still would have handled him the exact same.

ggg is a totally different animal. the guy has the footwork, defense, workrate and BOXING ability to beat floyd , add in his bilateral power and this version of floyd gets beat

Radam G says:

Styles make fights and the chemicals in your brain is effect by weight loss. A bigger Canelo would have done slightly better than the catchweight one. And NO, NO, NO! A starved-down 3G by even an ounce wouldn't be able to deal with Money May's gamesmanship. Physics are affected by the change of any nano viable.

As Canelo was, 3g's game will be thrown off, Money May will have easy work. Nonetheless, the bout will never happen, so discuss it is a moot point. Holla!

michaelabii says:

GGG loses to Floyd at any weight. Besides - his resume is no better than Canelos. Too much hype - a very good fighter no doubt but not yet great and at this level it takes a great fighter to beat Floyd who in my opinion is actually fighting better at 36 than at 24 ! Yes, his style has changed and he has lost some speed but now makes up for it with efficiency and superb conditioning. Like Canelo said all Floyd has to do is pile up the points. GGG loses to Ward as well.

much respect but your opinion, well is an opinion but the fact remains although floyd is great still today he is not as good as he was when he fought Corrales or even JMM. the floyd today is fantastic but the floyd that fought JMM beats the floyd today. there is no arguing that.

hype is a state of mind with an emotional response. resume or not, hype or not, GGG has the attributes to beat THIS version of floyd. at 160 GGG batters floyd or spanks him easy putting rounds in the bank with ring generalship and activity while floyd flees. ggg has the footwork to stay with an opponent, the stamina and endurance to stay with an opponent, the boxing ability to transition from defense to offense flawlessly and the punching power to negate want an opponent wants to do and when.

GO and watch GGG's last 6-8 fights and LOOK for these things, STUDY these attributes and open your mind to what i explained.

then go back and watch floyd beat the breaks off of Corrales, and then watch the ghost and canelo fight.

the foot agility and coordination is not the same, he makes up for a lot with anticipation....

this is not a knock on floyd, he is almost 37, the body diminishes with time, its LIFE

The Shadow says:

Wow, look at Saving Private Ryan stunting, stepping his scribble game up and ish while flaunting some studying. Nice. An educated opinion formulated by substance and fact is fine with me any day.

I've noticed some slight deterioration in coordination and foot work as well. But I think he's as good or better than when he fought JMM. You will naturally look different when fighting guys with different styles who also happen to weigh 20-25 pounds less.

As for GGG, styles make fights. Pro fighters can do everything well against a certain level of opposition. Joshua Clottey can imitate Floyd to a T vs. a mail man. I bet Radam G can pattern the shoulder rool from an orthodox stance vs. a guy with a losing record, convincing everyone he's the second coming of Pretty Boy Floyd.

Let me see GGG corner Andre Ward, Austin Trout or a guy like Erislandy Lara -- which I doubt he can -- and then I'm ready to concede that he stylistically can trouble someone with the skill set of Mayweather Jr.

Speaking of other fantasy matchups, I really wonder what would've happened had Ernie Shavers fought Wladimir Klitschko. I think Ernie would've caught Wlad like he did Larry Holmes.

The Shadow says:

Exactly. At least Superman vs. Spiderman happened in a comic book.

TotoyBato says:

Superman vs Spiderman how 'bout Wonder woman, Invisible man and Superman.

IMHO it wouldn't have been very close, with WK doing to Earnie what Jerry Quarry did to him (Wlad w/much more power than JQ).

The Shadow says:

What's up y'all, ya boy The Shadow just came from partying with P-Reala and Money May. Right next to ya boy's house, about 100 yards. Daddy Steele was hollering at everything in sight, swagged out and they was lovin' it. Money May left in a black Rolls Royce (his MIA collection is black, just like it was MIA), P-Reala in some sort of red car with Money May's female assistants from All Access chauffeuring the ****.

I asked about punk a$$ GGG, he said who the fudge is that? A 50 Cent crony? G-G-G G-Unit! LMAO! Step your draw game up boy! The only Soviet mutherfockers droppin dollars are the corrupts ones -- not the consumers.

I asked about a mere con. You guys can guess the answer. I ain't worried 'bout nuttin'. And UOENO. Haaaaaa!!!

The Shadow says:

And y'all damn well know! I'm down with OPP!!!!! My dumb arse even gave the keys to my house to some TMT chick who said she'd be here in the morning cookin' for ya boy. I'm willing to take that chance. I must be stupid. Maybe I'm on dat syet.

LMAO!!

Or it wouldn't have been very close, with ES doing to WK what Ross Puritty did Wlad (I'm not exaggerating when I say Ernie hit like a 1,000 RPs).

;-)

dino da vinci says:

G3 is not getting a Mayweather fight. At least not a Floyd Mayweather fight. Ever.
