Zab Judah Seems Quite Focused Ahead of Garcia Clash

BY Michael Woods ON April 23, 2013

KhanJudah Hogan35I know some of you will call me a fool, ask me if I've lost my fastball, wonder if my pro-New York bias has infected my ability to reason: but all that aside, I'm feeling like Zab Judah might just pull it off on Saturday night at Barclays Center.

Yeah, yeah, I know, he messed the bed against Baldomir, blazed out against Mayweather, couldn't exploit advantages against Cotto, froze mentally against Amir Khan (Judah vs. Khan in above Hogan photo)...I'm familiar with all that. Indeed, history is not on Zab's side, as his recent triumphs have been coming against sub-superstars, like Kaiser Mabuza and Vernon Paris, and his signature W, against Cory Spinks, occured in 2005.

But I heard something in Zab's voice, and from his crew, including dad Yoel and pal Monte Barrett at a Tuesday open workout for press at the Judah Brothers Gym in East New York, ahead of the Saturday Golden Boy-Showtime show at Barclays Center, that makes me believe the hype, hop on to the bandwagon of belief a little bit.

I thought Zab's hand and foot speed was top grade in his last outing, which came last March, against Vernon Paris at the Aviation Complex in Brooklyn. So, I don't think his physical gifts have gone Elvis, and left the building. As always, I'm wondering about his head, his mentality, his focus, his resolve. "This is a huge event, a great opportunity," he said to the press. "Winning in a great style..this is New York, this is Brooklyn...New York fans are very tough." I got the sense he knows expectations are high and he doesn't want to disappoint.

I will know a bit more if the seemingly centered, serene Zab, the on-the-right-spiritual-path Zab is truly in control of the ride on Thursday, when at the final press conference Angel Garcia, the father of junior welter champ Danny Garcia and agent provocateur extroardinaire, tries to get into his head. "I don't prepare for that," he said. "Angel is doing that stuff to support his fighter with limited skills, to make up for the 50% of what Danny is lacking." Later, asked again about button-pusher Angel, he said, "Angel who? We hear him, but we don't...That's his plan." I saw that mindset in action in London last week, when Nathan Cleverly ignored taunts from Team Robin Krasniqi, as he laughed it up when he was handed a skirt by Krasniqi which had "Nathan The Princess Cleverly" written on it. He shrugged it off, got a chuckle out of it, and showed Krasniqi how much of a princess he was in the ring at Wembley Arena and on EPIX. Zab did allow that he would derive satisfaction if and when he stopped Danny, because the father would feel the sting.

Judah finished up by stating, firmly, that there would be no excuses if he came up short on Saturday, and he expected none from Garcia.

Readers, weigh in. This would be a signature win for Zab...can he do it? Can he exploit that lefty stance? Do you think that Garcia's win over Amir Khan was overrated? Would a Garcia win elevate him in your eyes? What sort of bout do you see unfolding? Weigh in, in our Forum.

You sir are no fool when it comes to this prediction. I must say this is the most sense you made on here since relating golden boy promotions to occupied Palestine. I fought with Zab at Queens center Elks club on wood haven blvd 1994 and have been following him since then. I was there at Mohegan sun when he won the title against that s African guy. I was there when Baldomir spoiled the big plan. A focused Zab Judah is a dangerous one. Zab is not old Morales or china chin khan. The only way to beat zab is break him down mentally and this being Zabs debut at Barclays center means he will be focused. Also Garcia's dad calling the cops on him in Vegas was no good. Go Zab! if he loses this one put a fork in him and he might have to provide security for construction sites like his brothers.

Carmine Cas says:

I think Zab can pull it off, he has all the physical tools. Mentally hopefully he's good. I hope he wins, I always admired his ability but never was really a fan. I met him back in Febaury at his gym in BK. He was a really nice guy, down to earth and welcoming. I am a fan of his now and I hope he whoops Danny's a** and clips Angel's wings

ali says:

I going to roll with Zab also I think he's in the right frame of mind for this fight.

ultimoshogun says:

I like Zab's chances too. Like deepwater posted, Zab presents a bigger threat than a glass jawed Khan and a battle worn Morales.

amayseng says:

Ill take Zab by mid fight KO.

A focused Zab is a dangerous Zab.

Garcia will try to time and trade and zabs

slick hooks and uppercuts get him out of there.

Remember when Zab almost got a prime cotto out

and cotto went low blow low blow?

Radam G says:

What may happen is that Zab will get D'Qed! Pretty Danny is going to hit him low, and Danny's pops Angel is going to call Zab a bytch with a punk dad. And this will cause Zab's pops to hop into the ring to fight Danny's crazy pops. Holla!

the Roast says:

I don't know. Everytime I think Zab will win he loses, and everytime I think Zab will lose he wins.

dino da vinci says:

OK, so I can plan accordingly, what do you think will happen and allow me to do the math.

Since you asked, here we go. This should be Zab's last shot. In his hometown, in front of all his fans, Zab should be focused and ready. My prediction, Zab, well ahead on points late in the fight, takes a huge shot on the chin and crashes hard to the canvas. He beats the count at eight. Action resumes and Zab drills Garcia in the sack. Garcia is taking his five minutes when Zab sees Jay Nady in the crowd. Zab grabs a stool and hurls it at Nady, striking him in the nuts. Garcia refuses to continue and the ref declares Zab the winner by way of DQ. I have no idea what will happen Dino. I do know that there are three fights on HBO and three on Showtime so it should be a good night in front of the TV.

Radam G says:

Hehehe! Good one, the Roast! You are one comical dude. Holla!

ali says:

R.I.P to this thread congrats to Amayseng, it is without doubt the greatest of all-time but all good things must come to an end u will never be forgotten.

ali says:

Im going to change my mind I think Gracia will win I just can't trust Zab but I will damn show be rooting for him.

tlig says:

Judah loses.

dino da vinci says:

@ the Roast. Got it! Danny Garcia by DQ. Thanks.

Spinach Chin says:

Zab Judah will be brutally knocked out inside 8. The bigger the stage, the more spectacular Zab loses. Zab looked great against Paris, as he always does against B-level guys, but Garcia is on another level.

Shazz says:

Judah is a fighter that you always seem to want to see win.
Every Judah fight I'm pulling for him, but somehow every on most all of his fights I get let down by his falling short of accomplishing the win.
I'm still rooting for Zab Judah and think he can win this fight using great early offense, intelligent ring generalship, and using the ring to his advantage.

brownsugar says:

Garcia will set the boundaries.. set the pace...and find his range.
Zab will be broken down and blasted out of contention by the late rounds
Show me a miracle Zab!!!
I hope he proves me wrong

deepwater says:

The fight won't happen if the weigh in goes into a street brawl. Yoel Judah might step to angel Garcia . No matter who wins this is going to be very interesting. Garcia is gonna sit on the back foot all day waiting to clip Judah .

Garcia is gonna sit on the back foot all day waiting to clip Judah. Yep im pretty sure that will be Garcia game plan.

the Roast says:

@ the Roast. Got it! Danny Garcia by DQ. Thanks.

NP Dino. I like what you did there.

stormcentre says:

Well, what can you say?

Judah is unreliable but his skills are so advanced on Garcia’s that it is not funny.

If Zab, with all this homeland motivation, talk, acting and superior skill; cant pull this off; then it’s time to hang them up in my opinion.

SouthPaul says:

Quite focussed until the incoming starts landing . The smart coin has to be on Garcia but watch out for the uppercut. It's TNT , it'll blast yo' *** out of there, Danny !

Garcia by stoppage .

[COLOR="#B22222">*What Garcia has is a dramatic ending right...
one slip by Judah,and it's GOOD-NIGHT
U say "Judahs got skillz," and this and that..and it may be true,
Those skillz didn't help him, years ago, agsint Tszyu
Make no bones about it, Garcia caaan fight...
left jab, left jab, left hook...boom-RIGHT!
so next time u come in here, u need to come correct...
and give the "CHAMPION OF THE WORLD" some respect.

Radam G says:

Wow! Zab is acting like a manchild prick again. WIHP! He didn't even show up at the last press conference. What a PETTY bytchy, wimpy thing to do.

Now way, way back in the day, Sonny Liston didn't do dat dumb jive when he was scared syetless of the hyped-up, made-up violence of the "black Muslims' Nation of Islam. [The mafia would've whupped arses and taken names.]

I understand that Zab cannot stand the Clown Dad, but Zab should be most professional and realize that this thing is a prizefight, not about a prize clown-papa stealing the show, and claiming the glory.

OMFG! I guess this is just how the "threatre of the unexpected" beams. Holla!

Radam G says:

Wow! Then he shows up after Pretty Danny and the Clown Dad are long GONE! Not cool, Zab! Now they have won the first three rounds. The bout starts long before the event in dat squared jungle. Don't miss seeing the forest for watching the trees. Holla!

SouthPaul says:

Good stuff, Radam. Zab's only got an uppercutters chance. Danny more than likely is going to mow him down.

good job man. it seems golden boy locked Judah in the basement at Barclay center until the Garcia's left. lol. you should see the Garcia press conference zab crashed the other day.

Real Talk says:

Of course Zab can win this fight and I'm pickng him to do so and Danny is right for the picking. Zab looks mentally strong and spoke the truth to the faces of Oscar and Bernard with control like a man. #Respect. Bernard acknowledged this and returned the favoe by speaking the truth as well. #Respect. Oscar needs to get his mind right and be the professional and get off twitter with the nonsense and stop being biased but I get he wants to tip the odds to Danny and get brownie points with his wife. #Dissapointing. Zab is the superior pugilist with the skillset to come out on top and delay the young champions rise to stardom which may be what he needs because I don't think he's ready for Lucas or Lamont. May the best man win and I see Zab pulling this off by boxing, moving, angles and picking his spots to drop power shots and blending them in with speed and touching the target. If Zab takes what Danny gives him and uses straight punches, potshots, boxes and moves, takes his time and place his shots and smother young Danny and frustrates him this will be a rough night for Garcia who to me only has a punchers chance. Speed and skills most certainly kills and Zab Judahs power is for real, he may have to close the show and seal the deal or the judges may make him swallow a bitter pill. Is Oscar scared Zab will pull it off and his influence over the judges is kind of soft? Time will tell us who's the 140 boss and who's going to be lost like apple sauce and Zab looking composed and cooler than Jack Frost ready nip at the nose of Danny with clean blows. The sound of the bell let's get on with the show, amy the best man win, let's see who got the glow. Dueces

Yes you're probably right Big Stinky.

But then Garcia is still a very basic fighter; no matter which way you look at it.

But then that may be all that's required to beat Judah, particularly if he quits like he can do when the going gets tough.

I still say that if Judah shows up to fight and stays focussed, he could (not should) win. But then, I agree with you too. Garcia could hurt Judah, and you know what happens when Judah is hurt.

Comparing Tszyu V Judah with Gacia V Judah . . . hmmmm I will leave that for you. As in my opinion those two fights, and the fighters with the same names, are so far removed from each other that it is not funny.

Peace.

Oh yes. Good vid man.

Makes you want to root for Zab. I think he was speaking the truth there. DLH needs to get of Garcia's co<k, and I respect Zab for speaking his mind.

Radam G says:

The whole thing was staged. GBP is just having a hard time putting butts in those seat, so came up with a WWE-wresting treat. Between Big Money O, B-Hop and Zab, don't believe da heat. Holla!

[COLOR="#B22222">*I don't know about scared... contrary to the fishnet stockings, DeLaHoya's no punk... he handled it right. Zab's a thug... drama always follows him in major fights. [/COLOR]

SouthPaul says:

Changing my pick. The Thugged out Moe (deepwater gets credit for that---- very funny!) is in my head too so I've decided to ride or die with Judah. Im envisioning Danny side stepping the wrong direction ... Directly in the path of lightening fast uppercut. Insert bam....pow... All those sounds from something like the old school version of Batman and Robin . That's how it's going down, then so does Danny. He'll be laying there with the I've fallen and I can't get up look on his face while his father is trying to avenge his honor in the post brawl melee.

Enjoy the fights , sees y'all tomorrow or maybe....tonight!

Radam G says:

@Strom: Pure play acting and role playing. In Cali -- next Hollywood -- it is natural as taking a dump! Holla!

ultimoshogun says:

Yeah, I was rooting for Zab anyway, but after watching the vid I hope he gives Garcia a boxing lesson and wins in convincing fashion.

stormcentre says:

Yes me too.

brownsugar says:

While the drama outside the ring is always entertaining...it'll have no effect whatsoever on Danny...if Zab comes into the ring with the right attitude he can use the negativity to his advantage.

The problem for Zab :

Garcia is younger stronger and the more fundamentally complete fighter.
Garcia has never had to rebound from a loss or rebuild his career.
That's where his confidence gets a boost.

Garcia will box smartly and wing his best "percentage" punches until the law of probability dictates that he lands one.

Garcia will get hit too. But Zab will be the first one to show signs of damage.

A good fight. I'd love to see Zab find a way not to follow the script. But Garcia represents the better quality fighter.
He cannot lose.

Well said, Sugar, In all likelihood that's how it's going to unfold. Just saw weigh in pics. Both men look in phenomenal shape. I'm sticking with my change of pick.... I got Judah using his speed and power to clip Garcia with vicious uppercuts. Danny's definitely going to taste the canvas tonight . Whether he gets up and goes onto to win..I can't call it the fullest but he's getting his bell rung tonight .

Zab said that was somethen that Garcia's wanted not him.

ultimoshogun says:

When I size these two up on paper the only advantages I give Garcia are youth and confidence. Zab's got the edge in skills speed and power IMO...If Zab can somehow use that negative energy combined with the home town crowd for fuel, this could be his night. A battle worn Morales was able to hang with Garcia for a good six rounds before he began to fade in their first fight...I don't expect Zab to fade in this one. I got Zab all day in this one by UD or possible KO.

it turns out that was almost a good bet.
Zab did better than expected. But probably not a good as he could have.
