  • 140-pound champ Maurice Hooker arrested on two charges following a traffic accident

According to a report in the Dallas Morning News, WBO 140-pound champion Maurice Hooker was arrested shortly before 2 am on Wednesday, July 11. He was charged with DUI and unlawful possession of a handgun following a car accident on Interstate 35E that involved two police cars.

Hooker, who resides in the Dallas suburb of Oak Cliff, was observed speeding. Before he could be pulled over, he crashed into a police car being used to redirect traffic around a construction site. In what was apparently a related incident, a second police vehicle, unoccupied, was struck by a different car. The newspaper story says that two police officers were hospitalized with minor injuries. Hooker and his brother, a passenger, were uninjured.

Last month, Hooker went to Manchester and won the vacant WBO 140-pound title with a 12-round split decision over Manchester's previously undefeated Terry Flanagan. Hooker is expected to make his first defense in November against Alex Saucedo.
