  • Jezreel Corrales Preparing With Ismael Ortega

WBA world super featherweight champion Jezreel Corrales is beginning his next fight preparation in his home country of Panama amidst changes to his camp.

Corrales is coming off the second succesful title defense of the belt he won back in April of 2016 when he defeated Japan's long-time champion Takashi Uchiyama. This past July 15th saw him defend his belt with a tenth round stoppage of a game Robinson Castellanos at the Inglewood Forum.

The major change by Corrales involves bringing in famed Cuban trainer Ismael Ortega to work on his physical conditioning.

Ortega has been a fixture of the Panamanian boxing scene for the better part of the last two decades and he has recently been associated with boxers Luis "El Nica" ConcepciĆ³n, Vicente "El Loco" Mosquera, Jean Piero Perez, Nehomar CermeƱo, Ricardo "Maestrito" Cordoba among others.

Thursday, August 10th saw the pair hook up for their first session together to measure where Corrales stands. In the near future, Ortega will implement a program that will heighten Corrales' strength and speed. Part of this program will be implemented with the help of Dr. Roberto Socarras, who specializes in the prearation of high level athletes.

On working with Corrales, Ortega stated "I love his attitude, he wants to learn and do his part. The most important thing is that the athlete be ready to work."

Jezreel seems like such a loose cannon. It will be interesting to see how his career pans out

Beating Uchi, even an aging Uchi, in Tokyo 2x is serious business. He looked average against Castellanos and he turned tail and said "speakie Spaneesh" when asked about fighting Lomachenko, but he is 25 years old and you cant teach long and tall.

The first fight with Uchiyama was a breakthrough win, the second fight Corrales showed he could manage 12 rounds in hostile territoy, but Uchiyama was fading fast and came in looking to box. I dont know who Francisco Fonseca is but it would have been interesting to see Gervonta Davis vs Jezreel Corrales, I think that is a fight TmT would take.

At least Corrales is looking to up his level, seems he recognizes he is noton par with other titleholders at 130 lbs.
