"INJECTIONGATE" Story On Shady Website, Written Under Fake Byline, Alleges Steroid, HGH Use By Pacquiao...Manny Responds, Roach Says There Was No Filipino Sparring Partner in 2008-2009
Michael Woods - Thursday, 12 May 2011
PacquiaoMosley_Hogan_38This smells like a Swift Boat type attack to TSS-Editor Mike. But in this day and age, there is, sadly, a different standard for what is "news" than some of us might like, so we decided that we should address this development, even though the source is at first glance beyond weak. (Hogan)An article which contains accusations that Manny Pacquiao used steroids and human growth hormone is now making the rounds on the Twittersphere. The explosive story is found on www.financebusinessarticles.com, and had been viewed over 700 times as of 4:15 ET on Thursday.(36698)

The PPV Running Diary: Pacquiao vs. Mosley
Eric Raskin - Monday, 09 May 2011
Raskin vs The Envelope=More entertaining main event than Pacquiao vs Mosley. (Chris Farina)This past Saturday night brought another major boxing pay-per-view event, and you know what means: more bitching from Raskin about how late these things end and how early his son wakes up in the morning. It’s completely illogical that, as a guy who needs a gallon of coffee to keep his eyes open after 9 p.m. and who hates cold weather, I haven’t moved to the west coast yet. But alas, I haven’t, so that means an evening at The Ring Managing Editor Joe Santoliquito’s house in suburban Philadelphia, a running diary column, and four hours of struggling to keep my head from hitting my keyboard.(30561)

Mayweather's False Intentions About Fighting Pacquiao Exposed...LOTIERZO
Frank Lotierzo - Saturday, 21 January 2012
MayweatherOrtizPostFightPC Hogan19No matter how many times we tell ourselves that we're not going to get sucked into the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao subterfuge, we always do. However, Mayweather relayed something in his phone call to Pacquiao last week that indicated what we probably already knew, that is Floyd isn't as serious as he wants us to think he is about making the fight with Pacquiao.ESPN reported that Mayweather sent SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett an e-mail that rejected a 50/50 purse split with Pacquiao....something that Manny has said he's agreeable to. According to Verrett, Floyd wrote: "He asked about a 50/50 split and I told him that can't happen, but what can happen is you can make more money fighting me than you have made in your career."So there you have it. Mayweather is still about fighting Pacquiao in the media because if he were truly serious about fighting him, he'd jump at the 50/50 purse split. Can there be any boxing fans alive who don't see that Mayweather has used the nuanced drug testing and demands for purse parity as a ruses to avoid the fight?Does anyone who remotely follows professional boxing not understand that fighting Pacquiao would not only be the most lucrative bout of...(29111)

Pacquiao-Marquez III: A Six-Pac Of Signing Subplots
Eric Raskin - Monday, 23 May 2011
Pacman made Marquez kiss the canvas three times in the first round of this 2004 tangle, but Marquez got his wits about him, and fought him evenly the rest of the way. (Hogan)Three years ago, on the day after Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez II, I wrote a column for ESPN.com entitled “The Pacquiao-Marquez Postfight Six-Pac.” After tense back and forth discussions and negotiations with myself, I have permitted myself to steal intellectual property from me, and so, now that Pacquiao-Marquez III is officially signed, I’ve put together a prefight “six-Pac” of subplots worth discussing. With Pacquiao vs. Marquez the matchup on everybody’s mind, here are six underlying matchups worth watching for in the weeks and months ahead:(26712)

Is Mayweather Fooling Us? Or Just Himself?
Frank Lotierzo - Tuesday, 12 April 2011
Last Friday there was an article posted on abc-cbnnews.com stating that Floyd Mayweather Jr. turned down a $50 million dollar purse guarantee to fight boxing's most popular and pound-for-pound best fighter, Manny Pacquiao. This is according to Pacquiao's adviser Michael Koncz. Since the supposed $50 million dollar offer has exploded in the media and digested by fight fans, it's also been reported that Mayweather has said it'll take a $100 million dollar guarantee for him to get in the ring with Pacquiao. If the $50 million dollar offer is legit, and I'm not sure I believe that it is, it would be more money than Mayweather grossed in his two fights with Oscar De La Hoya (2007) and Shane Mosley (2010) combined.(25742)

UPDATED WITH VIDEO Sergio Says He'll Risk His Health To Fight Pacquiao...WOODS
Michael Woods - Tuesday, 27 September 2011
398_1024x664photo by Damien AcevedoTwo months ago, I was at a press conference to hype Saturday's clash between Sergio Martinez and Darren Barker, an undefeated Brit who hasn't been in against anyone remotely close to Martinez in talent. I asked Martinez and advisor Sampson Lewkowicz if they'd consider dropping down to under 154 pounds if that meant they could tempt one of the two titans, the lottery twins, Mayweather and Pacquaio, into a fight. No way, they said. Sergio's body couldn't handle it it. It wouldn't be a smart thing to attempt, from a health perspective.Well, from a wealth perspective, and in the challenge department, things have changed. Martinez was at Modells in NYC for an open workout today. After adult film actress Lisa Ann finished lusting at the Argentine with her eyes, he went through a quick workout with trainer Gabriel Sarmiento. A bit later, I asked him to explain his flip flop. Check out the video Q 'n' A. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUEY1u5eU8gThe fighter said yes, he'd go to 150 pounds to get a megafight. "At 160 there are no opponents available to me," Martinez said in Spanish, with Lewkowicz translating. "I must go down to 150 and take a risk with my health....(19321)

Roach Never Misses The Obvious, And That's Huge
Frank Lotierzo - Thursday, 17 March 2011
Last week Manny Pacquiao's head trainer Freddie Roach, talked with the Philippine Star/Philstar.com and shared his thoughts on his fighters' upcoming title bout with former three division champ Shane Mosley on May 7th. While he was disclosing his thoughts on the fight, Roach took time out and praised Mosley's trainer Nazim Richardson, but acknowledged at Mosley's age, 39, how much can he really do to make him a better fighter. And then added that Mosley's legs are gone and that really showed in his fight with Floyd Mayweather last year. This is something everyone who saw the fight surely agrees with him on.(18254)

Shane Mosley: He Couldn't Versus Mayweather And Wouldn't Versus Pacquiao
Frank Lotierzo - Tuesday, 10 May 2011
When former three division champ Shane Mosley 46-7-1 (39) signed to fight WBO welterweight title holder Manny Pacquiao 53-3-2 (38), most observers were pretty confident that based on Mosley's recent history, he probably wouldn't win, but he'd at least push Pacquiao to fight and treat the fans to an exciting bout. Pacquiao represented another huge payday for Mosley and one last chance for him to redeem himself having coming off of two underwhelming showings against Floyd Mayweather and Sergio Mora in his last two bouts.(17501)

Arum And Mayweather Chummy At Super Bowl
Michael Woods - Monday, 07 February 2011
Arum And Mayweather At Super BowlLook at those gleaming choppers. Why, these three folks, Floyd Mayweather, Bob Arum, and entertainer Jamie Foxx seem like they are the best of friends as they get their party on at Super Bowl 45 in Dallas on Sunday. You all recall that Arum promoted Mayweather, until they parted ways in 2006 with some acrimony, after Floyd turned down a then career best payday to tangle with Antonio Margarito. But a deal is a deal, and money is money, and the prospects of Goldman Sachs-y pile of green can make old grudges disappear. So, shall we rejoice because this snap by Chris Farina/Top Rank indicates that Mayweather and Arum are on the same page, after last year was wasted with endless "non negotiations" negotiations which resulted in arbitration, but no meeting of the minds to bring Mayweather and Pacquiao together in a ring? Not so fast.(17481)

Why Talk About Manny, Who Brings US Money To Phillipines, Floyd Asks...WOODS
Michael Woods - Monday, 03 October 2011
MayweatherOrtiz_Hogan53Floyd Mayweather helped himself stay relevant with an interview with DJ Whoo Kid. He took aim at Manny Pacquiao, and chided the interviewer for bringing up Pacquiao, implying that doing so is unpatriotic, because Pacquiao makes money in the US, but then brings it back to the Philipines.Mayweather told Kid when asked if he'd be watching Manny Pacquiao meet Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12, "I'm not really concerned with him, a guy got somethin' to hide, you know what I'm saying I do what I do, he do what he do. I beat fighters when they're undefeated, when they're at the top, and he beat my leftovers, he fights my leftovers. We say be the best, take the test, that's the only thing we're saying, be the best take the test."DJ then asked why Larry Merchant always hates on him. Floyd reiterated that he believes Merchant doesn't know boxing. The fighter said he doesn't know who he'll fight next, and then said that Marquez has won the most rounds against Pacquiao, and boasted that he beat JMM easily. He joked that he is introducing a meal at Popeyes, "The Two Piece and a Biscuit," referencing his one-two KO of Victor Ortiz. Joe Frazier (1944-2011)...HAUSER
Thomas Hauser - Monday, 07 November 2011
t 24676 07I’ve written at length about Joe Frazier in the past and will do so again in the future. For now, a few words on his passing.Frazier fought with an intensity, determination, and pride seldom seen in the sometimes glorious, sometimes ignominious, history of boxing. Some fighters try hard until they get hit. Then they stop trying. Joe always kept trying. As a young man, Eddie Futch sparred with Joe Louis. Later, he trained Frazier. “Anywhere they hit you, you felt it,” Futch said. “When they hit you, it hurt for days.”Naazim Richardson (like Frazier, a fixture on the Philadelphia boxing scene) later observed, ”The body is different from the mind. Your body would rather lose a fight to Muhammad Ali than win a fight against Joe Frazier.”On March 8, 1971, Frazier entered the ring at Madison Square Garden for the first of three historic fights against Ali.“You don’t win fights by talking,” Joe said. “You win fights by fighting.”Ali’s record was 31-and-0 when he entered the ring, and 31-and-1 when he left it. That night, Frazier became immortal.“If God ever calls me to a holy war,” Ali said years later, “I want Joe Frazier fighting beside me.”Joe Frazier ennobled the sport of boxing....(16884)

Freddie Roach Says Manny Pacquiao Will Be Back In Top Form
Michael Woods - Wednesday, 16 November 2011
PacquiaoMarquezIII Hogan 10Like any top-tier trainer, Freddie Roach threw himself under, if not a bus, then a minivan, when he told TSS that he thinks maybe overtraining was the reason we didn't see "A-game" Manny Pacquiao against Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12.In a Wednesday phoner with Roach, TSS asked Dedham Freddie to give Manny a grade for his showing, and who the Congressman wants to target next."I give him a B minus," the former fighter, who was mentored by Hall of Fame trainer Eddie Futch, said. "He wasn't really himself, he had a bad night. I don't know why, but he maybe overtrained for the fight. Maybe we started him too soon. He helped Jorge Linares get ready, and we thought that was a good idea at the time. Maybe he was overtrained, and left a little in the gym."Again, see how the trainer didn't even imply subtly that Manny's so-so showing was a result of anything the boxer did or didn't do? It's a Roach trait which is one reason why his gym is a magnet, and draws fighters from coast to coast: guys know he won't degrade them to burnish his rep.Roach also told me he was going to talk to Pacquiao hopefully Wednesday night, and see who he wants to fight next. I wrote about that part of the...(16829)

The Irony Of One Punch...LOTIERZO
Frank Lotierzo - Monday, 03 October 2011
PacquiaoHatton_Hogan_29Recently former junior welterweight title holder Ricky Hatton was quoted saying that he went into a depression and considered suicide while trying to come to grips with his loss to Manny Pacquiao in May of 2009. Since being devastated by Pacquiao in the second round Hatton hasn't fought. Sports writers, broadcasters and coaches repeat how the NFL is a game of inches and how one or two plays usually determine the outcome of the game. In boxing one punch can not only be the difference between winning and losing, but it can also make one fighters' career and ruin the others,' and that's not even considering if one fighter sustains a serious injury or in the worst case scenario is killed. When Manny Pacquiao caught Ricky Hatton with an over-hand left on the chin that was heard around the boxing world, it launched one career and ended another. Prior to fighting Pacquiao, Hatton was thought of as being one of boxing's most popular and exciting fighters. If you remember, Hatton and Pacquiao shared equal billing and purse parity for their marquee match up two years ago. At that time, despite his popularity, no one was predicting Pacquiao would go onto claim titles at 140,147 and 154....(16804)

Recently, Shane Mosley 46-6-1 (39) has been saying that he'll look a lot better against Manny Pacquiao 52-3-2 (38) next month than he did Floyd Mayweather last year because Manny will engage him more than Floyd did when they fought. Bad Judging: A Case Study
Thomas Hauser - Sunday, 05 February 2012
Vazquez media day 120201 004aRuben Garcia should be the president of the Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. fanclub. (Chris Farina).I don’t know Ruben Garcia. He might be a very nice man. I do know that Garcia was in the wrong place at the wrong time on Saturday night. More specifically, Garcia was sitting in a judge’s chair scoring the fight between Nonito Donaire and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.It wasn’t a hard fight to score. Donaire outlanded Vazquez in eleven of twelve rounds en route to a 231 to 163 show of superiority. Donaire also landed more power punches in every single round for a 147 to 56 advantage.Judges Levi Martinez and Don Trella scored the fight 117-110 for Donaire. Every ringside report of the fight that I’ve read had Donaire winning by a comfortable margin. For the record, watching at home, I scored the fight 117-110 for Donaire.Garcia scored the fight 115-112 for Vazquez. In other words; the consensus among knowledgeable observers was that Donaire won nine of twelve rounds. Garcia gave eight rounds to Vazquez.“Gave” is the proper word for most of those rounds. Vazquez didn’t earn them. What was Garcia watching? It was almost as though fans could have checked out “early results from San Antonio” on a boxing...(15259)

ANOTHER UPSET! Orlando Salido Gets TKO Win Over JuanMa...WOODS
Michael Woods - Saturday, 16 April 2011
No aspersions should be cast upon JuanMa. He always delivers exciting fights, one way or another. (Hogan)The upset parade continues. Another underdog got it done, this time in the main event from Bayamon, Puerto Rico which ran on Showtime. Orlando Salido, a massive underdog brought in to give Juan Manuel Lopez some hard work, did more than that. He was in JuanMa's face ceaselessly, and after scoring a knockdown in the fifth, kept his foot on the gas. In the eighth, Lopez was eating on the ropes, but answering with some vigor. The ref, though, didn't like all the clean shots he was taking, and stopped the clash, at 1:39. (14791)

Pacquiao Marquez 24/7 Episode 2 Recap...WOODS
Michael Woods - Saturday, 29 October 2011
Pacquiao-Marquez-24-7Episode two of Pacquiao-Marquez III 24/7 debuted on Saturday and two matters of import emerged for me. One, Marquez has a new strength and conditioning coach, Angel Hernandez, who studied at Texas A&M. Two, the Mexican legend, on the advice of his doctor and Gonzalez, no longer drinks his own urine.Marquez says on the HBo program that he is training for this fight as though it's his pro debut. It looks like he's acclimating to the 144 pound region well, as the speed bag he hammers at the gym is coming off its moorings.Pacquiao, it seems, is also on message. He says he's now balancing the boxing and Congress juggle that much better. Viewers see inhabitants of his district, Sarangani Province, and hear that six of ten live below the poverty line. Many earn around $12 a month, but sometimes that falls to nothing. Manny, people say, is seen a sympathetic person, and his cattle distribution program and monies directed to fishermen for motors are cause for thanks. Manny says he's satisfied so far at what he's done but knows it will take time to make serious inroads. He wants to get a medical center, the provinces' first, built.Back in Mexico City, Marquez shows viewers his car...(14675)

TOLEDO--UNPLUGGING PAC-MAN: SOLVING THE STYLE OF MANNY PACQUIAO
Springs Toledo - Friday, 15 July 2011
manny-pacquiao-erik-moralesIn 1965, Fighting Harada tore into the great Eder Jofre for fifteen rounds and toppled him from the bantamweight throne. From that high perch, Harada thrilled Japan with four successful title defenses. His fifth was against an Australian Aborigine. This challenger, only nineteen years old, was assumed to be nothing more than a “push-over” by the Japanese matchmaker. As it happened, Lionel Rose tore into the great Harada for fifteen rounds and toppled him from the bantamweight throne. The upset sent shockwaves from coast to coast. “I lose my job,” said the matchmaker afterwards.Harada was perhaps the greatest Asian fighter in history until another idol from another island nation took his fourth linear title and left Harada blinking in the glory lights.Manny Pacquiao has not been officially defeated since 2005 when he faced Erik Morales, a conventional boxer-puncher. Many analysts, including this one, believe that another great Mexican fighter defeated him in 2008. Juan Manuel Marquez, a technician, managed to counter Pacquiao’s turbo charges and stun him several times in their rematch. Pacquiao got lucky in that one and left the super featherweight division behind forever. The...(13000)

Mayweather-Ortiz Would Be Fine If Pacquiao Wasn't Out There...LOTIERZO
Frank Lotierzo - Wednesday, 08 June 2011
BertoOrtiz_Hogan28Lotierzo makes a good point. The mental pressure on Ortiz, who has heard from critics that his head isn't screwed on as straight as it should be for a championship caliber fighter, will be immense as we count down to Sept. 17. (Hogan)Well, as if everyone didn't know that the announcement was going to come eventually, the "Fire-starter" has announced he's back and will return to the ring this coming September 17th. Yes, Floyd Mayweather 41-0 (25) is the "Fire-starter" because every time he says or does something pertaining to boxing it ignites a raging fire in the form of a debate that rages and builds until the night of the bout and doesn't subside until a couple weeks after it. And then everyone tries to guess or calculate what his next move will be - and we're usually wrong. The only thing we're never wrong about is there will be an angle in play whether it's the opponent or the conditions or terms of the bout that will weigh heavily in Mayweather's favor.(12972)

Mayweather Is Watching As Pacquiao Eliminates His Options
Frank Lotierzo - Thursday, 03 March 2011
Manny Pacquiao vs Shane MosleyIt's been slightly over 10 months since Floyd Mayweather 41-0 (25) scored what has to be considered the signature win of his career over Shane Mosley. Yeah, it may have been eight years after the late Vernon Forest beat a prime Mosley more convincingly than Floyd did, and he did it twice. And granted, though Mosley was a totally spent and empty package the night he fought Mayweather, except for one big right hand in the second round, Shane was still the most formidable and dangerous fighter Floyd's ever shared a ring with. On that there can be no denying, and in Mayweather's defense, he clearly out-thought and out-fought Mosley for 10 of the 12 rounds they spent in the ring fighting. (12601)

How Will Floyd Mayweather Be Remembered?
Raymond Markarian - Monday, 22 August 2011
MayweatherWorkout7211111Fifty years from now if we are not paying to see robots fight instead of humans, boxing fans will discuss the accomplishments of Floyd Mayweather Jr. At some point after the welterweight has thrown his last punch, future fight fans will compare his defensive abilities and quickness to other men who are best of their time.Retrospective looks are at the core of this sport. We measure who would win a fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De la Hoya as a healthier debate than contrasting the home run prowess of Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds. But in sports as well as in life, we fail at times to look at the current day from a historical sense.Today, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is 41-0, a six-time champion in five different weight classes. At his peak Mayweather is the best fighter in boxing. But over the last four years, he has fought more battles in a courthouse, than a boxing ring. Numerous run ins with the IRS, misdemeanor, and felony charges including a domestic violence dispute with a former girlfriend and physically assaulting a security guard outside of a nightclub have the 1996 Olympian putting up his dukes with the law. Some think of Floyd’s legal issues as signs of a life...(12489)

"Floyd Mayweather Will Beat Manny Pacquiao By Comfortable Decision"

Pacquiao Marquez 111112 005aAfter the third meeting between Manny Pacquiao 54-3-2 (38) and Juan Manuel Marquez 53-6-1 (39) concluded this past Saturday night, the HBO broadcast team of Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman and Emanuel Steward were quick to point out that Marquez's trainer Nacho Beristain was the scapegoat and part of the reason why the decision favoring Pacquiao was met with disapproval by most of the fans attending the fight, simply because Beristain told Marquez he had the fight won. Yeah, no less than six, and probably more like seven rounds of Marquez out-boxing Pacquiao was unraveled by one sentence. How transparent was that? Everyone reading this knows Marquez wasn't going to get the decision unless he beat Pacquiao half to death and he was being held up by the referee when the fight was over. Nacho isn't why his fighter didn't win the decision - even if Marquez won the last round the fight would've been a draw. Prior to their third fight there wasn't much separating them and depending on who you asked, either fighter could've been declared the winner of both bouts. And their third fight this past weekend was no different. It was a very close fight and I wouldn't consider the decision favoring...(11559)

"Canelo" Alvarez Stops Ryan Rhodes In 12th After One-Sided Scrap....WOODS

I'm not going to go that route with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. The kid who some are saying is the future of the game is a darned solid fighter. He showed a lot to like against Ryan Rhodes in the main event of HBO's Boxing After Dark show which unfolded at Arena VFG in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico on Saturday night, and didn't lose a round on my card. Alvarez stayed calm, cool and on message as he whacked Rhodes with combos for 11 plus rounds, and closed the show in the 12th round of a most one sided affair.(11362)

Reaction came as swift and hard as the two-punch combination from Floyd Mayweather that laid WBC welterweight titleholder Victor Ortiz out cold for the count this past Saturday on the Golden Boy fight card in Las Vegas.Prizefighters, trainers, commissioners and fans were quick to speak, scream and yell on whether or not Mayweather is a villain or hero.During the press conference Ortiz hinted that the referee Joe Cortez, a man always involved in controversial endings, never truly called for the fight to resume. But Ortiz did acknowledge that he made a costly mistake.“I learned a lesson,” said Ortiz, who was busy apologizing for intentionally head butting Mayweather on the mouth. He repeatedly hugged Mayweather who seemed to shrug it off and then proceed to wallop Ortiz with a left hook and right cross. Ortiz was looking at the referee who was looking somewhere off in space. One person who found the knockout distasteful was Moreno Valley’s Kaliesha West, a female world champion.“Yes it is true, protect yourself at all times. But who wants to witness a cheap shot victory?” said West, the WBO bantamweight champ. “I would have...(11167)

Pacman-Marquez 24/7 Episode 3 Recap...WOODS
Michael Woods - Sunday, 06 November 2011
Pacquiao_workout_111104_004aExtra attention is given to members of the Pacquaio and Marquez teams who stand by their men, and help prepare them for battle, in the third installment of the HBO's Pacquaio-Marquez III 24/7First off, Marquez received an honor, as he was bestowed with a spot on the Mexico City walk of fame, but it was right back to work after that interval. Marquez went back to the gym and didn't box a stitch, instead doing weight work. Marquez said his training has been better in every way compared to his prep for his fight with Floyd Mayweather.Marquez finishes the day with a session in a hyperbaric chamber, which he says recharges his batteries. He huffs pure oxygen through a mask, and then departs. In Hollywood, Manny Pacquaio doesn't bother with the weights. He does pads with Freddie Roach and bag work and then pauses to crack up at a lady dressed up as him. It is Halloween, after all.The Manny crew then heads over to hang out in the Manny Pacquiao Merchandise and Tattoo Shop. Manny slurps soup while Buboy gets a tat, his first. He is getting inked with a burning meteor. That tat is the same one Manny and most of the rest of the crew have engraved on their left forearm. Buboy says he...(11012)

As of today, we are not so sure of that...(Hogan Photos)Dear Floyd Mayweather:Hope you had a fine birthday on Thursday.34.Wow.Hope you don't mind me saying, that's sort of old for a boxer. "I Only Punch Hard Enough To Win" aka Mayweather Hits Hard Enough To Beat Pacquiao
Frank Lotierzo - Monday, 21 November 2011
PacquiaoMarquezIII Hogan 19Howard Cosell to Muhammad Ali 9/20/72 in the ring after Ali stopped former heavyweight champ Floyd Patterson in their rematch:Cosell: Muhammad, you couldn't put Floyd down, is there anything left of your punch?Ali: No Howard, I can't punch, I only punch hard enough to win.As most know, former heavyweight champ Muhammad Ali wasn't known for his knockout power. Ali may perhaps be the greatest overall heavyweight fighter/boxer in history, but he certainly wasn't a life-taker like Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers. Incidentally, in eight fights against those feared killers, Ali went 7-1 (5). Former champs Larry Holmes and Gene Tunney also weren't known as punchers, yet they convincingly beat beasts named Shavers and Dempsey. When Ali fought Foreman in 1974 for the title, the prevailing thought was he couldn't tickle George with his punch, therefore George should just walk right through him on his way to a spectacular knockout win. Ali knocked Foreman out. When Sugar Ray Leonard fought Marvin Hagler in 1987, Hagler was known for having a titanium chin and it was inconceivable to think Leonard could hurt Hagler, let alone beat him. Yet despite...(10673)

Mayweather On Ortiz Rematch: "I Would Do It Again"
Administrator - Sunday, 18 September 2011
"STAR POWER: MAYWEATHER VS. ORTIZ" POST-FIGHT QUOTES FLOYD MAYWEATHER, New WBC Welterweight World Champion "This was another unbelievable performance. A lot of people want to know what happened. There were a couple head butts. Sh*t happens in the sport of boxing. "Protect yourself at all times. "You wanted to see a knockout and that is what I gave you. "When Victor Ortiz was nine years old, I was dominating the sport of boxing. "This was an unbelievable training camp. This camp was blood sweat and tears. Being up all night. Running seven or eight miles. I deserved it. "I was always told to protect yourself at all times. My mouth was split open. I said keep it clean. Once you touch gloves, it is go time. "We came together to fight. It is fight time. You want to do me dirty and then two minutes later you want to be my friend? This is the hurting business. "Without the fourth round, he was going to get knocked out anyway. I was fighting stronger. I was keeping my composure and sticking to the game plan. "We were breaking him down. I listened to what my corner said. "Floyd Mayweather isn't ducking and dodging anybody. If he [Ortiz] wants it, he can have it [a rematch]. "If he...(10451)

“Miss Pac Man”: What We’ll All Be Doing On May 5
Eric Raskin - Thursday, 02 February 2012
MayweatherOrtizArrivals Blevins16If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a tweet is worth … well, at 140 characters max, certainly a whole lot less than a thousand words. Maybe 32 or so, I’d guesstimate. Unless there’s a Twitpic attached, in which case it’s worth about 1,032 words.Nevertheless, this Twitpic-free tweet from Floyd Mayweather on Wednesday is certainly worth a thousand words of reaction: “I’m fighting Miguel Cotto on May 5th because Miss Pac Man is ducking me.” The tweet was just 14 little words long, but its emotional impact on this longtime boxing fan and writer is not so succinctly summed up.A list of some of the feelings stirred by “Money’s” loaded declaration: anticipation, excitement, depression, frustration, anger, bewilderment, revulsion, confusion, and maybe even a little guilt and self-loathing. Allow me to lie down on Dr. Melfi’s couch and explain. On the one hand, Mayweather vs. Cotto is a decent fight, the most marketable and second most competitive (behind only Mayweather vs. Sergio Martinez) fight Floyd could have considered if we take Manny Pacquiao out of the equation. It’s a big event. On certain levels, I’m looking forward to it.However, I’d still need about 8-1 odds to...(10045)

SHAME, SHANE Mosley's Legacy Is Stained By His Poor Effort Against Pacquiao...WOODS

PacquiaoMosley_Hogan_8It's not just Hopkins. Many fighters I talked to shook their heads and scoffed at Mosley's showing against Manny. It's not just super critical fightwriters and sarcastic fans who want to see buckets of blood who looked down on Mosley's (non) effort. (Hogan)I've held off writing this, for a few reasons. Mostly, I was still trying to figure out what it was that I saw on Saturday night at the MGM in Las Vegas. But also, the part of me that holds considerable respect for Shane Mosley, and what he has done in the ring, didn't want to be too harsh.(9967)

"I believe Martinez has fought better competition than Manny Pacquiao, I believe that whoever says Pacquiao is number one is wrong. I believe Sergio Martinez is the sweet scientist of boxing. Nonito Donaire Hits a Speed Bump...HAUSER

DonaireMontiel_Hogan11Drivers see them all the time. They’re bumps in a roadway (typically painted yellow, three-to-four inches high, six-inches-or-so deep) designed to reduce the speed at which cars are driven. Think of Nonito Donaire as a finely-tuned Porsche with Bob Arum revving up the engine for a test drive toward super-stardom.Donaire is charismatic in and out of the ring. The WBC-WBO 118-pound champion is on virtually every pound-for-pound list. His record is 27-and-1 with 18 knockouts (the loss came ten years ago in his second pro fight). In the age of Manny Pacquiao, it doesn’t hurt that Nonito’s nickname is The Filipino Flash. On October 22nd against Omar Narvaez at Madison Square Garden, Donaire hit a speed bump. He didn’t careen off the road, but it slowed him down a bit.Donaire was born in the Philippines on November 16, 1982; the third of four children. “We were poor,” he says. “We weren’t starving, but lots of times we were hungry. If there was a chicken to split up, it was an occasion.”Nonito’s parents emigrated to the United States when he was eight years old, bringing his younger brother with them. A Note on Mayweather-Ortiz...HAUSER
Thomas Hauser - Monday, 19 September 2011
MayweatherOrtiz_Hoganphotos1Bart Barry wrote last year that the marketing plan for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s fights has become, “How can we fool the public again?” With that in mind, there came a time about a month ago when I tuned out Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz. I didn’t read the conference-call transcripts. I didn’t go to Las Vegas for the fight. I didn’t buy the pay-per-view. On fight night, I was curious enough to follow the action via short texts posted at brief intervals on ESPN.com. On Sunday morning, I watched the now-infamous fourth round and its aftermath on YouTube.Mayweather is a superbly talented fighter. “Anything my mouth says, my hands can back it up,” he states. “Once you put me in that squared circle, I’m home.”Floyd also has a penchant for anti-social behavior, having been criminally convicted twice for beating up women. He is currently under indictment for assaulting the mother of three of his children (in addition to physically threatening two of the children). He has engaged in racist homophobic rants; burns hundred-dollar bills in nightclubs to flaunt his wealth; and demeans opponents as a matter of course. “I’ve been in a lot of fights,” Arturo Gatti said before fighting Mayweather in...(9057)

Cotto, Margarito, Arum Speak At Postfight Presser...WOODS
Michael Woods - Sunday, 04 December 2011
Cotto Margarito 111203 003aPOSTFIGHT PRESSERMiguel Cotto said he will rest a few weeks and then plan his next bout. He didn't dismiss Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.---Cotto said his face speaks volumes. After the first fight, it was a fright mask. The implication is that in 2008, Margarito was using plaster on his fists.---Margarito said at the presser he felt fine mentally and physically. He said Cotto's mom went to him and asked if Miguel hits like a girl, and he said yes. He said that the swelling on his eye was caused by Cotto rubbing it. He wanted to go on, he said, but said that NY conspired against him. He felt that the fight was going the same way as the first one, and that he would have come on. During the bout, he was telling Cotto his punches didn't hurt and asked Cotto if his were hurting him, and asking him to stand and fight.---Arum was asked about Cotto's contract status. "Miguel said, 'That man is my promoter and will always be my promoter.' I never had a contract with Marvin Hagler and promoted all his fights, and Cotto reminds me of Hagler."---Margarito had 12 stitches, Arum said.---Brandon Rios versus Mike Alvarado is something Bob Arum would like to see, he said in the Cotto-Margarito...(9030)

Mayweather Did To Ortiz What Many Other Greats Would've Done...LOTIERZO
Frank Lotierzo - Monday, 26 September 2011
MayweatherOrtiz_Hogan16It's been a little over a week since WBC welterweight title-holder Floyd Mayweather 42-0 (26) stopped former title-holder Victor Ortiz 29-3-2 (22) at the end of the fourth round. And from the moment Mayweather dropped and stopped Ortiz with a perfectly placed left-hook and right cross to the chin, there's been much written about Joe Cortez's ineptness as a referee and Mayweather's unsportsmanlike behavior during the bout. Let's get Cortez out of the way first - yes, he clearly was out of position and did a horrible job governing the fight at the end. But that had no effect on the result, that blame goes to Victor Ortiz. Did Victor really think he could try to headbutt Mayweather and then try to make friends with him and perhaps suck him into falling for his own bending of the rules conduct later in the fight? As we saw Ortiz learned the hard way because Mayweather was too experienced and smart to be bettered by Ortiz at that game. It's been agonizing hearing and reading the cookbook analyst banter back and forth saying what Mayweather should've done or what they would've done in that situation. As most know this column has not treaded lightly when it comes to objective criticism...(8706)

Arum's Latest Shot At Mayweather Is Nothing But Fool's Talk...LOTIERZO
Frank Lotierzo - Thursday, 03 November 2011
Pacquiao_Kobe_Bryant_111103aThe going back and forth and accusatory tone between the Pacquiao and Mayweather factions seems to be endless. On top of that, everyone who's ever watched a fight or hit a heavy bag seems to know what it'll take for the fight to be made and who will win it if and when it comes to fruition, if ever. And now Manny Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, just weighed in with a real dozy.Recently Arum said, "what Mayweather hates is Manny's right hand. Mayweather has no chin and Manny will knock him out. Pacquiao and Mayweather is a three or four-round fight. Period. And who knows that best? Mayweather. The one thing Mayweather has had throughout his career is he knows boxing. He understands boxing and Mayweather can not compete with Manny. It's the right hand of Manny that is preventing that fight from happening. If Manny agreed just to jab with the right hand the fight would be made in 30 seconds."Things must really be looking gloom for the fight being made, at least in Arum's mind. Because that remark about Manny's right hand instilling so much fear in Mayweather to the point that he fears tangling with Pacquiao really came out of left field. The fact of the matter is, if Pacquiao is...(8547)

Don't Saddle Donaire With Being The Next Pacquiao
Frank Lotierzo - Sunday, 27 February 2011
Don't Saddle Donaire With Being The Next PacquiaoBoxing is dead! Boxing is dead! Yep, that's what boxing fans have been hearing for the better part of the last couple years. And in fairness, these aren't the best of times for amateur and professional boxing. Yet, if Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather actually negotiated like adults and agreed to terms for a legitimate welterweight title bout, outside of this month's Super Bowl between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, it would be the most widely covered and watched sporting event of the year. In addition to that, a professional boxer (Manny Pacquiao) is still one of the five biggest stars in sports. The only problem is there's just not enough world class fighters who capture the public's imagination like Pacquiao, and Floyd Mayweather to a lesser degree.(8448)

Julio Chavez Jr. Handles Marco Antonio Rubio With No Problems
Michael Woods - Sunday, 05 February 2012
Chavez-jr-vs-veneno-rubioThe fans at the Alamodome did the wave midway through the main event in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday night, and that wasn't in homage to the thrilling spectacle in the ring. The tussle really didn't generate any buzz till round 11, when Julio Cesar Chavez Jr really upped the ante, and tried to smoke Marco Antonio Rubio. He didn't manage to take him out but he did dominate the underdog, who fought at the level he usually does against B+ and above-level boxers. The judges confirmed the obvious, seeing it 118-110, 116-112, 115-113 for Chavez Junior.Fans wondered with Chavez' weigh-in woes and the news of his Jan. 22 bust for drinking and driving if Rubio would take his O, but the underdog didn't look like he thought he had an opening what with the weight woes and possible mental drain of the arrest. Then again, he was a super middleweight in against a light heavyweight, as Chavez was 22 pounds more than he was Friday. Junior went 237-560 to 201-962 for Rubio, who was much sound and not enough fury in what should be his last chance at a high profile strap.Larry Merchant talked to Junior after, and some in the crowd booed the boxer. Junior said the weight woes affected him, and...(8233)

He then made a crack about Ortiz getting massaged by a man in the last episode, and added another crack at Oscar De La Hoya, who was seen wearing fishnets in photos of him cavorting with an ex stripper in 2007.Mayweather is then seen working his body, not his mouth. He does pads with Uncle Roger. We then see Floyd sipping a mix of orange soda and Mountain Dew in his workout's homestretch.Viewers then see a Labor Day cookout given by Floyd's staff, to thank the fighter. In Ortiz' zone, we see Victor at a public meet n greet at a block party. The next day, a group from Big Brothers and Big Sisters come to visit Victor. There are lots of good films about the fight game, but I’m a Raging Bull kinda guy. Raging Bull has pride of place at one end of the spectrum. Rocky dominates the other. Rocky is the brainchild of Sylvester Stallone, actor, director, producer and whatnot extraordinaire. According to legend, Sly was a starving artist in a coldwater flat at a loss for words and at a loss in the world when he caught a fight on closed-circuit that changed his life. It was no ordinary fight. It was for the heavyweight championship of the world. Broadcast from Cleveland, Ohio on February 14, 1973, the bout featured the reigning champion, Muhammad Ali, defending the title against a challenger named Chuck Wepner.(8095)

Atlas Thinks Mayweather Beats Manny, Maybe Easily...WOODS
Michael Woods - Friday, 13 January 2012
FNFTeddy Atlas spoke during tonight's "Friday Night Fights" about the sad saga of flirtation, the Mayweather-Pacquiao tease-a-thon. So, does Atlas think the Tease Twins, I mean, Manny and Floyd, are going to get it on, in May, June, November, or Neveruary? In Las Vegas, Atlas said that he thinks Mayweather would win the fight, maybe easily. "He's better technically," Atlas said, citing Manny's reckless aggression. Atlas said he agrees with Stephen A. Smith, who debated fellow pundit Skip Bayless today on ESPN on subject of Mayweathr-Pacquiao, that Bob Arum is the gum in the machinery of this one. He reiterated what he said last week, that Arum would prefer that Pacquiao fight guys who command less dough than Mayweather would, because then the promoter takes in more revenue. "Unless both fighters come way down in their demands, I don't think that fight happens," Atlas said. The trainer-analyst said the window to the bout is closing, because with Manny's full plate, he could lose interest in boxing.(7755)

I can't be critical of Mayweather for fighting Ortiz...Lotierzo
Frank Lotierzo - Sunday, 21 August 2011
MayweatherOrtizLAPC_98HoganIn less than a month undefeated welterweight and at worst the third best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing, Floyd Mayweather 41-0 (25), will meet hard punching southpaw Victor Ortiz 29-2-2 (22). And as par for the course Mayweather will be lauded and excoriated for agreeing to fight Ortiz while Manny Pacquiao is out there and willing to meet him under the normal contractual obligations that have stipulated major fights for years. And regardless of whose side you come down on as to why Mayweather and Pacquiao have yet to meet in the ring, the fight is probably a year overdue and many boxing observers are starting to care less and less if it ever happens as time goes by. Not that that will hurt the interest in it once they do agree to fight if that ever happens.Give Mayweather credit, he's achieved his goal of wanting to be relevant, and he his. Floyd's navigated his career to the point that almost anything he says or does is news in the boxing community. As most know this column has been highly critical of Mayweather the fighter, but never the manager. As a fighter I have almost as many questions about him as I do answers pertaining to his greatness. He can't be hurt and can solve any fighter's boxing style. That waltz didn't make anyone's fight of the year list, but Mora's last outing, against Brian Vera on the February 4th Friday Night Fights, was quite the fan friendly rumble. (7491)

Kimmel, Steroids Come Up On Pacquiao Conference Call...WOODS
Michael Woods - Wednesday, 02 November 2011
Pacquiao-vs-Marquez-3Follow Woods on Twitter https://twitter.com/#!/Woodsy1069Jimmy Kimmel appearances, steroid usage and Manny Pacquiao's desire level came up during a Wednesday afternoon conference call to hype the Nov. 12 Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez showdown.Promoter Bob Arum kicked things off on the call. Arum said Pacquiao will appear on the Jimmy Kimmel show on Thursday, and that Piers Morgan will show a Manny/Freddie segment soon. "He's a man who brings a new image to boxing, the pound for pound best fighter in boxing," Arum said of Pacquiao.Pacquiao said he truly is amped for this third fight mostly because Marquez has said he was robbed in the first to, when he was awarded a draw and a loss. The audio coming from Pacquiao and Roach, speaking through their cell phones, wasn't stellar. I had a lot of trouble understanding both men.Pacquiao was asked if it was important for him to knock out Marquez. "If the knockout will come, it will come," he said. Has Marquez changed since the last fight? Roach says he's gotten a bit more offensive, and that works in Manny's favor. Roach was asked about Marquez' physique, which looks more muscular than we've seen. I had trouble hearing the response....(7477)

Floyd Holds Court On The Phone, Says Manny Mentions Him Just To Make More Money...WOODS
Michael Woods - Wednesday, 07 September 2011
MayweatherWorkout7211111Floyd told the media that he doesn't expect the Sept. 17 fight to go the distance. (Hogan)Floyd Mayweather was his usual self on a media conference call on Wednesday afternoon. He was at times humble, at times less than so, and tossed his share of stiff shots at Victor Ortiz, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao.Mayweather got on the line, and thanked the media, HBO, his staff, all the sponsors, Schaefer ("They call it Golden Boy Promotions but I prefer to call it Richard Schaefer Promotions"), Al Haymon, Kelly Swanson, and Leonard Ellerbe. "Come September 17 I want to come out there and put on another pleasing performance," he said. He was asked what he saw when he was watching Victor Ortiz-Andre Berto in April. He said he didn't have a plan to watch the fight, but was at 50 Cent's house in CT, and they ended up hitting the bout. When he left, he said he thought it would be exciting if they fought. He said he spoke to Victor after he fought Juan Manuel Marquez, and was impressed with his humility. He was then asked if he wanted a KO. He explained that fighters go into survival mode most of the time. Hatton came to fight, he said, and that's why that fight was...(7423)

If Mayweather Really Wants High Praise, Do Something Only Duran Did...LOTIERZO
Frank Lotierzo - Monday, 09 January 2012
MayweatherOrtizFinalPC Blevins9Isn't it great to see how welterweight title holder Floyd Mayweather 42-0 (26) has been granted a postponement in serving his three month jail sentence for his battery conviction, which was supposed to begin on January 6, 2012? Mayweather's delayed jail term will have to wait for him to pick up another easy payday on May 5th before he can take up residence at the cross-bar hotel for a few months. What's even more astonishing is, Mayweather's May 5 opponent hasn't even been named yet, though we did just get word from Raymond Markarian that it looks like Robert Guerrero will get the nod. The only thing we know for sure is that it won't be against another welterweight title holder, Manny Pacquiao 54-3-2 (38). Yes, even as of this writing and despite it being almost two years past the date when it should've happened a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather is still the biggest and most anticipated fight that can be made in combat sports. And everyone knows, or should know, that the hard truth is the fight hasn't been realized yet because Mayweather hasn't seen enough slippage in Pacquiao. I for one certainly have and don't harbor any reservation in saying that Mayweather will...(7384)

Manny Pacquiao Wins Majority Decision Over Marquez In Ultra-Tight Scrap
Michael Woods - Sunday, 13 November 2011
Pacquiao Marquez 111112 001aHe didn't look like no nine-to-one underdog from the start in the main event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night, did Juan Manuel Marquez. He and Manny Pacquiao did what they did in most of the other rounds in their two prior bouts: fight remarkably tight rounds. Once again, the judges had to render a decision and tab a winner. Judge Robert Hoyle had it 114-114, Dave Moretti saw it 115-113 and Glenn Trowbridge scored it 116-112, for Pacquiao. Once again, their fanbases will burn up message boards debating the decision and defending the honor and reputation of their guy.If Floyd Mayweather doesn't want to fight Manny, might I suggest a fourth tussle? This one was tighter than a aging starlet's facelift and the debate between Pacmaniacs and Marquezzies will continue afresh. Judges often simply go for the busier man, and CompuBox said Manny out-threw Marquez, 578-436. He outlanded him, 176-138, as well. CompuBox said Manny enjoyed a 117-110 edge in power punches, though Marquez fans would take serious issue with that contention. As Marquez left the ring, and walked to his dressing room, Max Kellerman talked to Pacquiao. We heard Kellerman, but then his mike went dead....(7268)

Mayweather Slams His Dad, Oscar and Ortiz On 24/7 Episode II...WOODS
Michael Woods - Saturday, 03 September 2011
HBO_Mayweather_vs_Ortiz_24_7A stark contrast in personality and training methods of Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz popped out in the second episode of Mayweather-Ortiz 24/7 on HBO.Viewers saw Mayweather working his "Money" persona, counting stacks of money in a hotel room, with his pal 50 Cent. Floyd and 50 did a silly skit in which they used stacks of money, money won on a preseason football bet, as phones. They processed the beef we saw last week, between Big and Little Floyd, and it must be said, I've seen less funny skits on Saturday Night Live...during the Denny Dillon era."I could care less what my father is doing," he said, mentioning that if he never spoke to his dad again, he'd be fine, and that the tiff would only make him fight harder on Sept. 17. Sad stuff, no matter what you think of Mayweather.Mayweather said that Victor Ortiz is "petrified," and mocked Ortiz' explanation for his loss to Marcos Maidana. Ortiz looks relaxed as he hangs with a pal, and they listen to tunes. The underdog goes to LA to tape the Piers Morgan show. He hangs with Oscar De La Hoya, who appeared with Ortiz on the show. We saw a highlight from the show, a clip in which Ortiz says he feels no fear, because he grew...(7247)

Floyd Drops, Stops Ortiz In 4th...Was It A Cheap Shot? ...WOODS
Michael Woods - Saturday, 17 September 2011
MayweatherOrtiz_Hoganphotos2(Hogan Photos)You are told to protect yourself at all times. Victor Ortiz forgot that ring basic, and paid for it in the main event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night. After Ortiz had a point taken in the fourth for a deliberate butt, the action re-started. He and Mayweather came together, and Victor tried to apologize. Floyd ripped a left hook, right hand follow, and down went Ortiz. He didn't beat the count of ten.The Marquess of Queensberry rolled over in his coffin, for sure. After, Merchant talked to Floyd. He asked him if it was a cheap shot. Floyd thanked God, and his team. He then said he was hit by a dirty shot, and "it's protect yourself at all times."He thanked the crowd for coming out and buying the PPV. Merchant asked him to talk about the fight. He had watch Floyd the video. "He done something dirty, we're not here to cry and complain about what he did or I did dirty. I was victorious. If he wants a rematch, he can get a rematch." He then stopped the interview, and said he never gets a fair shake from Merchant. "What are you talking about?" Larry said. "HBO needs to fire you," Floyd screamed. "You don't know shit about boxing.""I wish I was 50 years...(7174)

RASKIN’S RANTS: Rumors, Exaggerations & Twitter Recommendations
Eric Raskin - Thursday, 12 May 2011
BoxRec.com doesn't agree with Marquez' shirt. But Raskin and many others at TSS think Marquez has Manny's number, to a degree, and think even at 147, he'll give Pacquiao problems. (Hogan)Since Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley was billed as a major “event,” I’m going to take the glass-half-full approach and call the past week or so in boxing “eventful.” There is indeed a lot to comment on besides just the material covered in my PPV running diary (http://tinyurl.com/42h2rv7), and let’s start with an email about the headliner of last Saturday’s big event:(7043)

The Official 24/7 Pacquiao-Marquez Drinking Game...RASKIN
Eric Raskin - Thursday, 27 October 2011
Pacquiao_media_day_111026_008aGive your keys to Lloyd Dobler, boxing fans, because it’s time to get rosy-cheeked and full-bladdered with another edition of the 24/7 Drinking Game. The Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez III version of HBO’s reality-series-slash-promotional-vehicle kicked off on Saturday night, and while the once universally acclaimed show now seems to draw as many boos as cheers, one thing remains true: 24/7 always goes down smoother with booze and “Cheers!”(For the record, I enjoyed this weekend’s premiere episode of 24/7 Pacquiao-Marquez, but based upon the comments made by boxing folks I follow on Twitter and the comments that those folks re-tweeted, I might just be in the minority.)A quick statement of the obvious before we begin the drinking game: TSS does not advocate the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors. So if you’re under 21, you can read along, but don’t play along. And don’t ask Editor Mike to purchase your liquor for you, because he’s a man of high moral character. (Unless you slip him a c-note, in which case he’s happy to become the older brother you never had.) (EM Note: In this economy, I’m susceptible to a mere ten spot lol…)And with that, let’s get ready to...(7002)

WOODS--Shane Mosley Admits That Retirement Might Be Option If He Loses In A Bad Way To Pacquiao
Michael Woods - Tuesday, 26 April 2011
We're all adults here. We know that this is the fight game, and the name of the game is making money. And sometimes, when people are trying to convince you to reach into your wallet, and transfer some of your wealth to them, they will say things that veer into hyperbole. I don't want to say they lie, but rather, they skillfully shade the truth, massage it, choose to accentuate one portion of a story over another. They play up evidence which suits their cause, and sometime ignore evidence which might cause the potential consumer to keep that wallet glued shut.(6831)

Juan Manuel Marquez Deserves Fourth Fight, But Mayweather Next Makes Sense
Ron Borges - Monday, 14 November 2011
Pacquiao Marquez 111112 006aLAS VEGAS - Bob Arum barely survived what took place inside the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday night. So, too, did Manny Pacquiao. That both did was a reflection on the security staff at the MGM and the presence of three ringside judges who will never be nominated for the Supreme Court. After Glenn Trowbridge and Dave Moretti concluded Pacquiao had defeated his arch nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Robert Hoyle saw it as no better than a second draw in three meetings between them, the sold out crowd of 16,383 began to boo lustily, reaching a crescendo that drowned out Pacquiao’s post-fight words until he finally left the ring with a sad look of embarrassment on on his face. By then the nearly 80-year-old Arum had scurried away to the post-fight press conference but not without the crowd taking out their mounting frustration on the man who controls Pacquiao’s career and had already begun talking about making a fourth fight between the two next May.“That’s the first time something like that ever happened to me,’’ Arum said after the majority decision was announced. “All the Mexican fans were booing me. They were yelling, ‘You stole the fight! You stole the fight!’...(6643)

Saturday Night Is A Suicide Mission For Erik Morales
Frank Lotierzo - Thursday, 07 April 2011
MoralesFanRally4Maidana_BlevinsThumbs up for Morales' heart and guts. But Lotierzo thinks he'll be going down, hard, on Saturday. (Hogan) As of this writing Manny Pacquiao is considered by most boxing observers to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing. It's been six years since he suffered his last loss, when he was out-boxed by Erik Morales in March of 2005. And to Pacquiao's credit, he avenged the loss to Morales twice by stoppage in 2006. Since losing to Morales, Pacquiao has been on a tear and has won titles at 135, 140, 147 and 154. On the other hand Morales, 34, is 3-4 since beating Manny and has been soundly defeated fighting between 133 and 147.(6290)

“Sugar” Shane Mosley is pretty much the forgotten man in this media circus. After all, this is the Manny Pacquiao Hour, a one-man act that doesn’t have room for a sidekick. Mosley is just a little trimming, extra frosting, a guy left out in the cold peering through a greasy window at the celebration he never got invited to. It almost feels like he’s an afterthought in this fight, someone who was needed to fill an empty chair when they started snapping photos for the history books.(6194)

Cotto Will Not Be Tough For Mayweather
Lee Wylie - Friday, 10 February 2012
MayweatherHatton HOGAN 233Can you imagine if the events in the movie "Groundhog Day" really happened? Can you imagine having to live the same day, over and over and over? Boxing fans could be mistaken for thinking they were actually living the real life version of "Groundhog Day," having to tolerate the Floyd Mayweather/Manny Pacquiao negotiations, which to no surprise after repeated back and forth jockeying, have failed yet again, for about the millionth time. As an alternative, Floyd Mayweather Jr. will now face Miguel Cotto on May 5th at the MGM in Las Vegas, in the junior welterweight division, with Mayweather moving up from welterweight. On paper, the fight appears captivating. Cotto will be at his optimum weight, 154 pounds, he is coming off the back of a three fight winning streak, which has seen him defeat Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga and his arch-nemesis Antonio Margarito, all at 154 pounds. Miguel Cotto also gives the impression that he has improved under the guidance of Pedro Diaz and Emanuel Steward before him, adding what appears to be better movement and a solid jab to his arsenal. And so we get to Floyd Mayweather Jr. He will be 35-years-old come fight night, an age that does not...(6084)

Avila’s Pound for Pound List 2012
David A. Avila - Tuesday, 24 January 2012
MayweatherOrtizFinalPC Blevins2Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have been in the news lately, mostly regarding a possible mega showdown. It doesn’t appear the top fighters pound for pound will meet in the ring this year but we can tabulate this year’s current and best prizefighters pound for pound. A number of changes have taken place down near the bottom of the Top 12 list.Toward the end of the year Giovani Segura was beaten soundly by Brian Viloria and Amir Khan was beaten controversially by Lamont Peterson. The new addition to the list is a heavyweight. Here is the list:1.) Floyd Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) – The Las Vegas prizefighter known as “Money” may not engage in the ring very often but, in those moments he jumps in, the arenas fill up and it becomes a real prizefight. As a pay-per-view attraction Mayweather, 34, attracts more than 1 million buys and as an actual boxer he’s a defensive wizard. When it comes to winning a fight he knows the moment to fire rapid combinations and how to set up opponents. The knockout win against a very strong Victor Ortiz and the dominating win over a fellow boxing wizard Juan Manuel Marquez two years ago prove he’s number one.2.) Manny Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KOs) –...(6017)

What We Learned in 2011...NGUYEN
John Nguyen - Tuesday, 27 December 2011
TSS LOGO!Amir Khan is Good…But Not GreatThere was a lot of talk as to whether Amir Khan’s pairing with Freddie Roach would prove to be the first step toward true greatness. The verdict appears to be in: no.Sure, against fighters who allow him to be a combination-punching prodigy, Khan can really look impressive, as he demonstrated against Malignaggi and Judah. But against fighters who are unwilling to be accomplices, Khan doesn’t look anything like an all-time great. Marcos Maidana made him look pretty vulnerable, and Lamont Peterson made him look pretty ordinary.A great fighter shouldn’t get walked down as easily as Khan can be. A great fighter shouldn’t hit the panic button when Plan A stops working.Maybe I’m wrong, and perhaps the youthful Khan will learn and develop, but it’s hard to see a guy who might not be the best in his division end up being one of the best who ever did it.Andre Ward Will Eventually Be Pound-for-Pound #1, but Will Never Be a Crossover StarThe consensus choice for Fighter of the Year, Andre Ward, has proven himself to be a special fighter throughout the Super Six Boxing Classic. MayweatherOrtizFinalPC Blevins9Welterweight champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather 42-0, 26 knockouts, is close to an agreement to fight lightweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 5. A source with knowledge of the negotiation told me that the two sides were very close to securing a deal that could be announced as early as this week.A clash with Mayweather will be undoubtedly the biggest fight of Guerrero’s career. For months, the Gilroy, California native has told the boxing world that he will be the one to defeat the undefeated pound for pound king.Guerrero says he knows Mayweather like the back of his hand, and that a fight between Floyd and Guerrero, a multilingual Mexican-American, will sell on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas.Mayweather’s advisor Leonard Ellerbe said their camp will announce Mayweather’s opponent this week and the signs are pointing towards Guerrero (28-1, 18 knockouts) getting the shot he desires.Fight fans expected May 5 to be the day Mayweather and Pacquiao finally fight. But both parties have apparently failed to come to terms once again. As it stands now, Pacquiao is expected to fight in late May or early June leaving Mayweather without a...(5797)

Get Set For Pacquiao-Marquez "Ring Life"
Administrator - Thursday, 06 October 2011
New York, NY – Two of boxing’s elite prizefighters – who are set to square off on Nov. 12 in an electric pay-per-view showdown in Las Vegas – will be featured on the next installment of the Emmy-nominated HBO series Ring Life, which will be available on the network as well as all the digital media platforms that distribute the series. Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez will be meeting in the ring for the third time in their brilliant careers, but their respective path to boxing greatness is a world apart. Born amid poverty in the Philippines, 32-year-old Pacquiao has overcome every barrier in front of him to become a worldwide figure. He is also the lone congressional representative from the Sarangani province of his homeland. Juan Manuel Marquez, 38, is the pride and joy of Mexico City, Distrito Federal, a place where the prizefighter was born, raised and still calls home. He began his boxing career at the age of eight while sharing a spartan two-bedroom house with his parents, two brothers and five sisters. Ring Life chronicles the lives of fighters as they define the spirit of boxing; balancing work, family life, training, expectations and the pursuit of their dreams....(5630)
