As his wife, Nancy, led me to the den where Gil Clancy was waiting for me, I half-expected to find him wearing a tuxedo, or at least a sharp tie and jacket with the CBS Sports logo on the front. Most of my memories of the steely-eyed, 82-year-old are of him looking dapper as he delivered outstanding boxing analysis on network TV in the ‘80s, and then on HBO in the ‘90s. On this day, however, he looked like he’d just gotten back from a fishing trip; he was tan, barefoot, and had on green shorts, a faded Team De La Hoya T-shirt and matching baseball cap. The gravelly voice was unchanged and, after a few minutes of boxing talk, it was clear his observations were as honest and astute... Read more...

Punching and kicking are meant to disrupt and neutralize grappling and throwing. Just as grappling and throwing serve the purpose of disrupting and neutralizing punching and kicking. In professional boxing straight punches reach the target first and usually impede hooks and uppercuts. The fight is usually decided by the fighter who can impose his game/style over the other. If the fighter throwing straight lefts and rights is effective then the fighter who wants to get inside and land his hooks and uppercuts is at the disadvantage. And of course the opposite applies if the fighter who makes his living with his uppercut and hooks gets inside. Because once... Read more...

Did Maidana underestimate Morales? Is Maidana overrated? There are some questions still lingering in our minds after "Action Heroes" but one thing we do know: Morales deserves credit for performing at a high level. (Hogan Photos) LAS VEGAS-Argentina’s Marcos Maidana pulled out a majority decision over Mexico’s Erik “El Terrible” Morales, whose heroic effort surprised many but not himself on Saturday. Many are calling it the Fight of the Year.... Read more...

Folks hoped that future Hall of Famer Erik Morales wouldn't get beat up too badly against Argentine Marcos Maidana in their clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night. The PPV attraction was seen by many pundits as an unseemly setup, with those people feeling the Mexican legend Morales, at 34, but older in boxing years, was too far past his prime for a young hammerfist like Maidana (29-2 entering; coming off UD12 loss to Amir Khan).... Michael Katsidis screamed, "What are you looking at?" at opponent Robert Guerrero before the bell rang to start round one of the lightweight clash which served as the leadin to the Marcos Maidana-Erik Morales bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night. The Californian Guerrero answered with his fists, "A darned fine fighter," in the first frame. And he proved that for all twelve rounds of a superb showing, in which he used superior ring generalship and accurate combos to dominate in a 117-108, 118-106, 118-107 victory.... Read more...

James Kirkland hit the deck in the first round, off a left hook, against Nobuhiro Ishida, just 30 seconds into the first round of the undercard clash at the MGM Grand on Saturday night in Las Vegas. He went down again at 1:44, and was up on shaky legs. A one-two put him on the mat and the ref Joe Cortez said no mas. The end of this middleweight "Action Heroes" clash came at 1:52 of the first, by KO. Kirkland, the 27-year-old Texan who was in the can for two years on a weapons charge, is now 27-1, while the 35-year-old Ishida rises to 23-6-2. Kirkland said after to Max Kellerman that the knockdowns were flash knockdowns. He was asked if he might go back to training with Anne Wolfe, and he said his camp went well, and he is ready to fight, so he didn't take the bait.... Read more...
