HOUSTON. (March 17, 2013) - After working together for four fights and nearly two years, head trainer Ronnie Shields is confident that undefeated, United States Boxing Association (USBA) super middleweight champion Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KOs) is now a complete fighter as he heads to Monaco for the "Monte Carlo Million Dollar Super 4" at Casino de Monte-Carlo. You didn't hear anyone, anywhere, predicting that the main event fight between Tim Bradley and Ruslan Provodnikov at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA on Saturday night could be a fight of the year candidate. It was, bigtime. Bradley got hurt in the first, second sixth and 12th, badly, but only went down, officially, in the final round. To Bradley's immense credit, he somehow shook off the hard clean blows, and somehow, we went to the cards: Denkin and Cantu had it 114-113, Caiz had it 115-112, for Bradley. I was too excited to score round by round, but a case could be made that the "loser" deserved to win three rounds 10-8, so the mathmeticians need to be called in. I say we... Read more...

In HBO's opener, Jessie Vargas took on Wale Omotoso, from the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. on Saturday night. It was tightly matched scrap between the two prospects. Wale had the power edge while Vargas boxed smartly and set the tone and pace in many rounds. We went to the cards, and they saw it 96-92, 96-92, 97-92, for Vargas. Vargas went 165-486 to 103-429 for the loser, according to CompuBox. Omotoso will likely look back and wonder why he wasn't busier, why he didn't show more desire more often. Jim Lampley described Vargas as a "pure boxer" and Omotoso as a "pure fighter" before the Top Rank fight started. The Las Vegas resident Vargas (21-0 entering; age 23; 146 1/2 pounds) was 154 fight night... Read more...

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS (March 15, 2013) - The Texas Three-Step is over for popular, unbeaten Mexican superstar and WBC Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez and undefeated WBA Super Welterweight Champion Austin "No Doubt" Trout, who completed their highly successful three-city, two-day press tour in Texas on Thursday. To infer that the three press conferences, all open to the public, were smashing successes would be an understatement. Fans lined up around the building to get into the McAllen Convention Center in McAllen, Texas, to watch the press conference late Thursday afternoon, the final stop of the Press Tour. Nearly 1,000 of them had assembled in the room by the time Golden Boy Promotions President... Read more...

Featherweight prospect Gabino Saenz is excited about his opportunity to appear on the untelevised undercard of HBO World Championship Boxing’s Timothy Bradley-Ruslan Provodnikov card. The 23-year-old is undefeated and hopes to make a statement. “It’s definitely a privilege to be on that card,” Saenz (seen puting down Qunice Wesby last July, in photo by Chris Farina) told TSS. “I’m honored.” Saenz will take on Cesar Valenzuela (3-1-1, 1KO) this Saturday night in what should be a showcase for the young slugger’s skills. The movie capital of the world temporarily housed a mixture of boxing and mixed martial arts on Thursday night in the heart of Hollywood, home of stars and starlets. On Hollywood Boulevard and just a quick run from Pantages Theater, Bash Boxing and the Art of Boxing Promotions showcased a number of bouts at Florentine Gardens. A packed house saw several very competitive fights. A very entertaining junior featherweight fight saw Khabir “The Crazy Russian” Suleymanov (14-3) pull out a split decision win over L.A.’s Ray Chacon (4-6) after six rounds. In a very close fight Chacon was the more accurate puncher and continually landed counter right hooks on the attacking Suleymanov. The Russian... Read more...
