Bob Arum talked to TSS about why, in his eyes, we haven't seen and perhaps aren't likely to see a showdown between Nonito Donaire, his guy, and Abner Mares, who fights for Top Rank. Mares is an excellent fighter, he said today at Madison Square Garden for the final Donaire-Rigondeaux presser, and his manager, Frank Espinoza, is a cool guy. Arum said he offered Mares "three times" what he's been making for recent fights, over a million dollars, and Espinoza was keen to take it but Richard Schaefer nixed it. Arum explained that it only makes sense for that bout to land on HBO, since HBO put Donaire... Read more...

So little actual time elapsed. So many memorable quotes uttered. Boxing can be funny that way. Sometimes, so many say so much about so little. Gary Cooper “strong, silent types” are a rare commodity in a sport where bragging about what you expect to do (beforehand) or what you might have done (after you fail to do it) is common. Now or then, everyone has a detailed explanation – or an excuse – for what we all saw with our own eyes. Some of what is said is even a little bit believable, if not the absolute truth. The announcement of former heavyweight contender Carl “The Truth” Williams’ death at... Read more...

STATEMENT BY KENDALL HOLT April 8, 2013 - I am pleased to announce that according to laboratory results I am not under suspicion of having taken a banned substance in connection with my bout against Lamont Peterson. We have received an email from Dr. David Eichner, Director of the WADA accredited Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory that my results "do not suggest doping." As explained to me, "intact HCB" indicates the use of that banned substance. A confirmatory test reflected that I did not have "intact HCB" and thus doping was ruled out in my case. There is an atypical finding for "non-intact HCB," which, as explained to me, is naturally produced.... Read more...
