EAST L.A.-After wowing several thousand fans at Madison Square Garden and millions watching on television, Juan Carlos Burgos could have signed with a number of promoters who were impressed by his talent. Instead, he signed another contract with co-promoters Thompson Boxing Promotions and Banner Promotions. Tamayo restaurant, famous for its collection of Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo’s paintings, was the setting on Wednesday for the contract signing between Burgos and his old promoters. The Mexican junior lightweight from Tijuana said it succinctly... Read more...

After careful thought and consideration with my family and team, I have decided to relinquish my WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Emeritus Title. As has been recently reported, the WBC elected to strip me of my world title belt, making the upcoming bout between Sakio Bika and Marco Antonio Periban for the vacant Super Middleweight Title. After consultation with my manager James Prince and attorney Josh Dubin, it is my belief that the WBC did not have the right to strip me of my World Title and name me Champion Emeritus. We voiced our position to the WBC, and after several discussions, have agreed to disagree with their interpretation of the facts and rules. In our opinion,... Read more...

Giving the naysayers the middle finger, Shane Mosley, who turns 42 in September, showed that he has something left to give the sport, as he took a 115-113 x 3 win over Pablo Cano, aged 23, in Cancun on Saturday night. Mosley and Cano were both buzzed a few times, and it looked like Mosley would maybe get stopped in the ninth. But he held on, and surprisingly, his legs showed some bounce and he had Cano backing up for much of the rest of the way. Mosley went to 47-8-1 and won a WBC International welter title. Cano dropped to 26-3-1. Many hammered Mosley for gloving up, and thought he should have stuck with the retirement he announced... Read more...

Devon Alexander told me a couple days ago that he wanted to come in and go after Lee Purdy, and show the world he can give you fun fights. He started strong, and was throwing more than 80 punches around Showtime's TV opener from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Purdy, though, looked to be just showing up to survive, like he would see going the distance as a win. He ate and ate and ate, and while I didn't see him get buzzed, his corner pulled the plug after round seven. Purdy was displeased with the move, but the fans weren't crushed as it was a one-sided situation. After the fight, Devon told Jim Gray that he hurt his left hand in the first round.... Read more...

ONTARIO, CALIF.-Despite the main event falling out due to fighter injury, there was no drop of excitement as Houston’s Victor Sanchez stopped Riverside’s Richard Contreras after seven of the most brutal rounds on Friday night. Two Houston fighters were brought in with Sanchez (5-6-1, 2 Kos) emerging the victor after a toe-to-toe featherweight war with Contreras (10-2-1, 9 Kos) at the Doubletree Hotel. The Thompson Boxing Promotions fight card also featured a junior welterweight fight but let’s talk about that later. Contreras had been in numerous wars and was matched with southpaw Sanchez, who opened... Read more...

Sorry, Whitey Bulger and Derek Sanderson. Books about those two Boston Bad Boys are destined to stay unfinished for a spell more, because I am deep into Thomas Hauser's new book, "Thomas Hauser on Sports: Remembering the Journey." This is book number 44 for the Manhattan author, best known as a "boxing guy" but someone whose output has ranged from a children's book to murder mysteries, along with copious sweet science-related text. I chatted with Hauser, who contributes to TSS, about this book. Here is a short Q n A. Q) Why this book now? Tired of boxing? A) The University of Arkansas Press will continue to... Read more...
