R.I.P. David Lopez, Former World Title Challenger Murdered in Mexico

David Alonso Lopez, who challenged Austin Trout for the WBA 154-pound world title in 2011, was murdered late Thursday night in Mexico in Nogales in his home state of Sonora. Lopez, nicknamed The Destroyer, last fought in June of last year. He finished his career with a record of 42-16-1.

Lopez, 39, and an unidentified companion were driving a late model truck that was showered with bullets for reasons unknown. Lopez died at the scene. His companion was wounded.

The state of Sonora shares a border with Arizona. The U.S. State Department advises U.S. citizens to exercise caution when going there, limiting travel to the main roads during the daylight hours. There were 3,053 murders in Sonora during the 5-year period from 2010 to 2014.
