Braekhus vs Mathis Oct 1st - On October 1st, The Spectrum in Oslo, Norway will host a major women’s boxing card that features top welterweight Cecilia Braekhus (28-0) defending her WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO world titles at 147 pounds as she faces France’s Anne Sophie Mathis (27-3-1).

The bout is a rematch between two of the top women in the sport today. The pair first met back in September of 2012*when Braekhus won a unanimous decision by scores of 97-93 from each of the three judges. Mathis is 37 years old and hasn’t fought since February of 2015, but she is returning for a bout that is a landmark fight for women’s boxing.

For American fight fans, Mathis is best remembered as the fighter who doled out a bludgeoning KO of Holly Holm in their December of 2011 title fight. She is a gritty fighter who comes forward and throws a high punch output. In July of 2014 she fought a "no contest" with Germany’s Christina Hammer in a controversial match where Mathis was disqualified by the referee before the result was changed to "NC." Holm and Hammer as recent opponents means that Mathis has been competing at a very high level.

Braekhus returned this past February after a 14-month layoff to win a 10-round UD over Chris Namus. Her return coincided with her signing with Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko’s K-2 Promotions. She was scheduled to return in November of 2015 on the undercard of Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tyson Fury but had to pull out because of an injury. Hopefully, this match signals Braekhus’ return to consistent competition, since*she is*looking to be the "face" of women’s boxing as the sport continues to grow.

Braekhus, who goes by the moniker "The First Lady," is promoting this event in her adopted hometown under the First Lady Promotions flag. Born in Columbia, the 34-year-old Braekhus, who goes by the moniker "The First Lady," was adopted when she was a child and raised in Bergen, Norway. Until now, she has campaigned her entire career in Denmark and Germany because of the law preventing boxing in Norway, a law that she was instrumental in getting overturned. She has forged an undefeated record to become the acknowledged #1 pound-for-pound female fighter in the world today.
