Team Guerrero, Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions released a statement early this evening about boxer Robert Guerrero's Thursday morning arrest in NY at JFK Airport, for gun possession. LOS ANGELES (March 28) - Early this morning Six-Time and Four Division World Champion Robert Guerrero was checking in his luggage at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, bound for Las Vegas, and, as he was doing so, made sure to advise the authorities that they needed to be aware that he had a firearm, which was unloaded and in a locked safe box with his luggage to be checked. Guerrero (seen above in Tom Casino-Showtime photo, taken Tuesday in NYC at media gathering)was carrying no ammunition and was within his legal right to possess such firearm in the state in which he resides. He was then arrested. At an arraignment held before the New York State Supreme Court for... Read more...

Robert Guerrero, slated to fight Floyd Mayweather on May 4, was arrested for gun possession at JFK Airport Thursday morning, the NY Daily News reported. The 31-1-1 boxer was in NY doing media to hype the forthcoming welterweight bout in Las Vegas, which will be shown on Showtime pay-per-view. Guerrero (seen in above Tom Casino-Showtime photo at Tuesday media luncheon in NYC), who turned 30 on Wednesday, was catching a flight to Las Vegas, the News reported, where he will finish training for the Mayweather bout. I have heard that he likes to shoot guns at shooting ranges. I have not heard whether he has been known to carry a gun for protection, or where he is or is not licensed to carry a firearm. I reached out to Geurrero's manager, Bob Santos, to learn more, and left a message on his voice mail. NY attorney Keith Sullivan told me that NY State has the... Read more...

I confess I enjoy talking to Showtime boxing boss Stephen Espinoza when I see him. He's a lawyer, yes. But I don't hold that against him. He's not from the Judd Burstein school of lawyers-in-boxing, in-your-face, confrontational. While he sometimes can't or won't give me the total truth, because he doesn't want to jeopardize a negotiation or throw someone who arguably deserves it under a bus. He'll tell me, or maybe wrinkle his nose, if he thinks a fight stinks, occasionally, and that's refreshing. Also, he doesn't run for a corner and huddle with other execs, giving off the vibe that he'd rather be emptying a cat litter bin than be talking to the press. I chatted with Espinoza on Tuesday afternoon in NYC, during a media gathering to spread the word on Robert Guerrero (pictured above, with wife Casey in background, in Tom Casino-Showtime photo), the Christian... All right, fight fans, it’s pop quiz time. Your question for today: Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux is … well, what, exactly? A: A relative boxing neophyte, still a bit wet behind the ears and learning as he goes along. B: So wise in the ways of the ring he should he should be sitting in a temple atop some snow-capped mountain, dispensing knowledge to visiting acolytes who seek to learn from the master. C: Both of the above. Determining the right answer is a conundrum, a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Because there is no way of really knowing which one of the possible choices is the more accurate, at least until the night of April 13, when Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KOs), the WBA super bantamweight champion, and Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 KOs), the WBO junior featherweight titlist and 2012 Fighter of the Year, square off in a 122-pound unification showdown. The much-anticipated... Read more...

It always good to see, if you're a fan of boxing, who loves the sport and wants to see it remain healthy, to see a fighter get some press outside the normal channels. When a boxer goes on a "Dancing With the Stars," that has the potential to grow the fighters' fanbase immensely, right? A growing and vibrant sport is beneficial to all of us who love it and make a living off of it. So on surface, it's seemed a good thing that Robert Guerrero, who fights Floyd Mayweather on May 4 in Las Vegas, appeared on "The 700 Club," the show hosted by evangelical leader Pat Robertson. But if you're not familiar with Mr. Robertson (seen in above Hogan Photo, flanked by Casey and Robert Guerrero), who is tellingly described in his Wikipedia intro as "An American media mogul, executive chairman, and a former Southern Baptist minister, who generally supports conservative Christian ideals,"... Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is one of the three top middleweights in the world who makes Southern California his base of operations. Big Bear Lake is Golovkin’s training center, high in the San Bernardino Mountains. The other two middleweights are Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, who trains in Oxnard, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who can usually be found in nearby Riverside. Golovkin, Martinez and Chavez are the most famous and talented of the middleweights, according to various sources. WBA and IBO middleweight titleholder Golovkin (25-0, 22 Kos) seeks to distance himself from the others beginning with a defense against Japan’s Nobuhiro Ishida (24-8-2, 9 Kos) next Saturday March 30. It’s part of a middleweight tournament taking place in Monaco. It will be televised via pay-per-view television. Last week in Manhattan Beach, Golovkin and Ishida met for a luncheon... Read more...

Arthur Abraham figured he had one overwhelming asset that would lead him to get the better of Robert Stieglitz once again, in a rematch of their fight from August of last year. Abraham took the WBO 168 pound title from Stieglitz, and they battled in Magdeburg, hometown to the Russian-born Stieglitz, on Saturday night, and on EPIX, in the Getec Arena. "The King" knew that he had a power edge on Stieglitz, who could amp up the volume but couldn't match the ability to concuss with a single shot. Or so most thought... Stieglitz played the part of the power puncher, not his usual role, coming out banging at Getec. He was energized to a wicked degree, and buzzed Abraham in the second, even had his left eye closing. The hometowner had Abraham dazed and looking to hold in the third, as Abe, a notoriously late starter, held on for dear life, hoping against a draining measure of... Read more...

Inside a small packed boxing gym, Mia Rosales St. John takes measured steps while sparring against a young boxer from El Monte who’s half her age but very strong. Blows are exchanged freely and sweat runs down the two female boxer’s faces inside the boxing ring as dozens watch while doing their own workouts in the gym that can’t be larger than three boxing rings side-by-side. It’s mid-afternoon and the younger kids are walking in to see St. John and Mayra Manzo trade blows. On one corner outside of the ropes stands St. John’s trainer Rhonda Luna, who also fights professionally. On the other is Ben Lira, one of the fight games’ master trainers. Both give advice to their charges during the fight session. “Don’t back up,” advises Lira to Manzo who punches hard and seems to gain confidence each round. Luna tells St. John to fire her right hand. St. John (47-12-2, 18 Kos)... Read more...

Yes, the 168 pound division is ruled tight-fistedly by Andre Ward. There is Andre Ward, and then everyone else is a distant second. But that doesn't mean that we have to or should ignore fights at super middleweight just because Ward has beaten the best of the breed there. On Saturday, in Germany, Arthur Abraham (seen above, left, with WBO super middle belt he took off Stieglitz, right), who the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board has installed as the fourth best 168 in the world, meets the No. 5 TBR, Robert Stieglitz. They've tussled before, in August 2012, with Abraham (36-3 with 28 KOs), the Armenian-born hitter who lives in Berlin, taking a UD12. That bout took place in Berlin, but this one, which will screen on EPIX in the US, will unfold in Magdeburg, which is where Stieglitz (43-3 with 24 KOs), who was born in Russia, lives. I touched base with Travis Pomposello, the EPIX... Read more...
