You would never guess when speaking to Emanuel Steward that he’s tutored and prepared some of the fiercest and most deadly prizefighters of this and the previous era. Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns, with that paralyzing right hand, made the hair rise out of a whole generation of prizefighters. Lennox Lewis was no cream puff either and dominated the heavyweights until he retired. The list goes on and on. Many of his champions were taught at the Kronk Boxing gym in Detroit and now Steward owns the brand and rightfully so. Steward is Kronk and vice versa. Pechanga Resort and Casino host Kronk Boxing along with Roy Englebrecht Promotions on Friday, Jan. 13. A number of youngsters from Steward’s stable, including junior middleweight Tony Harrison, will be showcased. Fast and furious best describes Steward’s style of fighting, which prescribes... Arum has been getting heat for doing what businessmen do, maximizing profits. But Borges says the onus of culpability is on Pacquiao, who should remember that Arum works for Pacquiao, not the other way around. (Hogan) The long running soap opera “The Unmaking of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao’’ continued this week after Mayweather called out Pacquiao and Pacquiao’s promoter responded by saying his fighter needed longer to recover from a cut eye than most people do from triple bypass surgery. Once Mayweather had his already scheduled 87-day sojourn at the county jail in Las Vegas delayed for a reason that would work only in Vegas, he immediately launched a Twitter assault on Pacquiao, challenging him to a May 5 showdown at the MGM Grand... Sergio Martinez had to stand back, compose himself, and literally wipe a grin of his face when asked to do a face-to-face staredown with Matthew Macklin at Madison Square Garden during a press conference to tubthump for their March 17 Theatre showdown on Wednesday. The easy-going Argentina-born hitter isn't the sort to be bombastic and talk a load of trash to try and lure the top dogs in the revenue department into a marquee fight, but that doesn't mean he won't stir the pot. Martinez called out the Top Rank twosome, of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, with some salty wording on Wednesday. "The public and the fans are getting really tired of who's fighting who, 'will Pacquiao fight Mayweather, and will Mayweather fight Pacquiao,' I give up on that, I don't want to be involved in the discussion who's fighting who," Martinez said, when asked for... Your move, Manny. Floyd Mayweather took to Twitter today to challenge Manny Pacquiao to a tussle on May 5. "Manny Pacquiao I'm calling you out let's fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see," the reigning pound for pound ace said Tuesday afternoon on Twitter. "My Jail Sentence was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up Punk." As of now, it isn't looking like the Congressman is in the mood to step up, not on May 5, anyway. He last gloved in November, against Juan Manuel Marquez, and while he took a controversial decision, he also took some punishment. Pacquiao suffered a cut over his right eye in the Marquez bout, a slice which needed 28 stitches to close. Promoter Bob Arum has said that Pacquiao on doctor's orders would not be able to spar until April, which would nix a May 5 fight for him. Unless something changes, and... Read more...

Welterweight champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather 42-0, 26 knockouts, is close to an agreement to fight lightweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 5. A source with knowledge of the negotiation told me that the two sides were very close to securing a deal that could be announced as early as this week. A clash with Mayweather will be undoubtedly the biggest fight of Guerrero’s career. For months, the Gilroy, California native has told the boxing world that he will be the one to defeat the undefeated pound for pound king. Guerrero says he knows Mayweather like the back of his hand, and that a fight between Floyd and Guerrero, a multilingual Mexican-American, will sell on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas. Mayweather’s advisor Leonard Ellerbe said their... Read more...

Sammy Aaronson!” An ex-pug stands by one of the phone booths at the entrance of Stillman’s Gym, a receiver held up over his head. He slips his cigarette to one side of his mouth and calls out again -–“Sammy Aaronson! Telephone!” Gaggles of managers and matchmakers, contenders and has-beens, wiseguys, and miscellaneous members of the fight mob banter and back-slap under a low-hanging cloud of smoke. Spectators in folding chairs face the exhibition rings at the far end of the floor. Boxers slip through quivering ropes and roll their shoulders as they wait for the bell. Assorted miniature handlers, most of them ex-pugs themselves, watch every move. Every now and then they register approval with a grunt. They register disapproval with a grunt. Only the tourists are confused. Millionaires organized the gym in the early 1910s to help ex-convicts. Lou Stillman, an ex-cop who runs the joint,... Read more...

Costa Rican goddess Hanna Gabriels looked sharp, quick and in control through seven rounds at the Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia, Costa Rica on Saturday night against Dakota Stone. The WBO female junior middleweight champion was too athletic for the willing Stone in a bout shown on The Boxing Channel (BoxingChannel.TV), but Stone was hanging tough, and it looked like she'd force Gabriels to swim into deeper water than she'd ever had to. The ref Geno Rodriguez then put his stamp on the event, and not in a good way. Gabriels launched a combo midway through the eighth, and Rodriguez stepped in and stopped the scrap. Stone wasn't in a hint of trouble, and hadn't been badly buzzed to that point. Stone protested vehemently, and Gabriels indicated that she didn't understand the stoppage. Gabriels (age 28) rose to 13-0 with 9 KOs, while the 42 year-old Stone's record slipped... Read more...

INDIO-One fighter felt he needed a knockout to win before entering the ring and that proved prophetic. After 10 tense back and forth rounds of lightweight action it was Santa Ana's Luis Ramos (21-0, 9 Kos) who emerged with the victory over Hollywood's Raymundo “Sugar” Beltran on Friday at Fantasy Springs Casino. Despite cuts on both sides of Ramos' eyes he out-battled the veteran Beltran (25-6, 17 KOs) who rallied after the fourth round behind some sizzling left hooks at the Fantasy Springs Casino fight card promoted by Golden Boy Promotions. The fight looked one-sided for the first three rounds, then Beltran began to time Ramos's attacks with precision left hooks that snapped the sweat off of the Santa Ana southpaw's head. Still, Ramos never wobbled. “I took his shots,” said Ramos, who won a regional title belt with the decision. “I... Read more...

Floyd Mayweather was supposed to report to jail today, but received a postponement from the court in Las Vegas and instead will report June 1. David Mayo of MLive.com reported that Mayweather’s attorneys argued that the boxer has a fight due May 5, and a Jan. 6 report date would impinge upon the early summer bout. Mayweather was sentenced to six months for battery, and the justice of the peace suspended three months of the term. He’d have been released in early April, giving him only a few weeks to get ready for a May 5 contest, against a foe to be named. The justice said she didn’t know of the early summer set-up when she sentenced him before Christmas. Off the top of my head, this reads like a concession made to a person of stature which would not in a million years be given to a “Regular Joe.” Maybe a TSS reader more versed in our legal... Seldom does a country flaunt only one world champion and heap its entire adulation to that person. Costa Rica’s Hanna Gabriels stands alone as that country’s only elite athlete who is considered the best in the world. Even President Laura Chinchilla of Costa Rica attends Gabriel’s fights along with thousands of other Costa Ricans. Yes, the two most famous Costa Ricans are women. Calling the tall, athletic Gabriels that country’s hero is almost modest. In many ways she’s near goddess status in the Central American country known for beautiful beaches, green countryside and pleasant weather year-round. Gabriels (12-0-1, 8 KOs) defends her WBO junior middleweight title against experienced veteran Dakota Stone (10-8-5) on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Palacio de los Deportes in Heredia, Costa Rica. It will be televised on www.cdb.tv and www.boxingchannel.tv... Read more...
