559643 375151202559566 673458030 nWe heard that one across the pond, Carl. There's no better way for a guy who is known to fight fans in his own vicinity but who one day would like to make a world splash than to splatter his foe, theb to notch a killer KO, as Carl Frampton did on Saturday night in Belfast, Ireland. Kiko Martinez, age 26, went down in a heap, and the Belfast resident Frampton inserted himself on the one to watch list at 122 pounds for more than a few US fight fans who loved his counter right on the button in round nine. The Spaniard Martinez threw a long overhand right, which landed some, but left his chin on a platter for the 25-year-old Frampton. A tight right to the chin sent the loser to the mat for the count. He rose but was too unsteady to continue, in the eyes of the referee. The end came at 2:46, and Frampton (now 16-0 with 11 KOs) picked up the European super... Read more...

Riverside Ramblings: Chris Arreola and Manhunt PDF Print Email

ArreolaAguilera Hogan121RIVERSIDE, CALIF-I walked into the boxing gym located in Indian Hills on Thursday morning. It’s an upper scale neighborhood in Riverside that’s built around a golf course of the same name. Only one car was parked near the location so I was hesitant to travel down the walkway. Usually several cars dot the street near the gym when training is underway. A few minutes later trainer Henry Ramirez shows up in his shiny car. He waves hello and proceeds down the walkway. Surprisingly, one boxer is already shadowboxing inside the ring when I open the door. It’s Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola who was already breaking a sweat as Ramirez and I enter the gym. One of Arreola’s friends is inside too. But he’s the only boxer there. As Arreola continues to work out we talk about the rogue police officer Christopher Dorner who gunned down several police officers in the Riverside... Read more...

Tim Bradley At Provodnikov Presser Says He's "Glad To Be Back" PDF Print Email

Bradley Provod with girls 1Bradley didn't look cheery to start but soon enough his smile kicked into gear at Wednesday press conference. (Al Applerose) LOS ANGELES-If you know Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley then you realize that it’s out of character for the WBO welterweight titlist to look like a mortician on a busy day. Usually he’s all smiles. But if you had beaten Manny Pacquiao and were contracted for a rematch that wasn’t enforced, then you too might have reason to look so glum. Nearly nine months after Bradley’s (29-0, 12 Kos) last win, the Palm Springs boxer sat with a look of gloom on Wednesday at the beautiful and historic Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Russia’s Ruslan Provodnikov (22-1, 15 Kos) was also present and will challenge the man who beat the man. It was odd to see the usually cheerful Bradley with a look of stone and disdain for the first hour... Read more...

MayweatherCotto Hogan 61You thought it was going to be Robert Guerrero versus Floyd Mayweather on May 4. Then maybe Canelo Alvarez. No, no, Guerrero for sure. Maybe we'll get the announcement at the Super Bowl, maybe right before Beyonce goes on at halftime. But wait, it's Floyd, he likes to mess with us, stir it up, switch it up, make us talk, stay relevant... "The negotiations for my fight are almost done. The front runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It’d be a unification bout at welterweight," Mayweather Tweeted at midnight, leaving us to mutter and chatter on Twitter about what this all means. First thought...is Guerrero going to again lose out again on a shot at Mayweather? He was supposed to meet Floyd in May 2012, and thought he had the gig secured. His crew thought it was in the bag...until it wasn't. Miguel Cotto got the fight, much to Guerrero's surprise. It seemed a foregone... Read more...

Kid Chocolate² PDF Print Email

kid chocolate panorama-1338694218a58New York has fallen in love with Kid Chocolate all over again. New York. He came with the heat in the summer of 1928. Wide-eyed and whippet-thin in the big city of dreams, he was wearing the only suit he owned. Six dollars and a one-way ticket stub from Cuba were in his pocket. His name was Eligio Sardiñas Montalvo. He went straight to work fighting for chump change in smoky clubs in Mineola and Brooklyn. But he made gloomy faces light up, and word travelled about the eighteen-year-old phenomenon tearing up the locals. Soon the clubs were packed and ringside cynics were raising eyebrows. Damon Runyon called him a “stick o’ licorice,” others “the Cuban Bon-Bon,” though his official nom de guerre was “Kid Chocolate.” His style of fighting was something to behold; something new, something old. It brought a sweet whiff of nostalgia.... Read more...

My Life Changed When Hoyfield Knocked Out Tyson PDF Print Email

Tyson-Holyfield Option 2My life simply would not have been the same had Evander Holyfield not knocked out Mike Tyson, on November 9, 1996 in round eleven of a scheduled twelve-round heavyweight title fight at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Finally…finally someone had stood up to that big bully Mike Tyson. This wasn’t the lazy, disinterested Mike Tyson who had lost to Buster Douglas in Tokyo, the one who had gone there believing himself to be invincible. This was the man who had seen his own destruction wrought in full through his own foolish pride and ill preparation, a man who had three long years in prison to think about it, a man who had countless hours to himself to mull it over in his mind, over and over and over again. This was the Mike Tyson who had flattened everyone he’d met in the ring since, each sad sack of a man looking terrified and bewildered as he took his... Read more...

Marquez Pacquiao 121208 005aSure, there would be risk for the 40-year-old Mexican in fighting Manny again. But he'd be rewarded with a purse perhaps double what he'd made before on his best night. I think he goes for it. You, TSS readers? (Chris Farina-Top Rank) Predictions: Juan Manuel Marquez will fight Manny Pacquiao for a fifth time probably in September, and he will not retire, and he will continue to negotiate smartly, and get all the leverage he can to get the best deal for himself he can coming off his stunning KO win over Pacman. Yeah, the report that Marquez is leaning against fight Manny again, I think that is pure bunk. As Marquez told Miguel Rivera of Boxing Scene a couple days ago, "I think for me there is no point [in a fifth fight]. " Lordy, I can think of like $10 million plus reasons, all of them green. JMM, I have seen no evidence that accumulated ring damage has impacted... Read more...

Chris PearsonSuper prospect Chris Pearson and two others that should have performed together on Team USA in this past summer’s Olympics are appearing together in Las Vegas. Junior middleweight Pearson, junior welterweight Frankie Gomez and junior featherweight Joe Diaz are all on the Golden Boy Promotions fight card on Saturday at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. USA FOX Espanol will televise the event. With lightning fast hands, technique and knockout power Pearson should have been a solid favorite to be a major part of the USA Boxing team. Instead the Ohioan opted to turn professional. “I’m looking forward to my first fight in Vegas,” said Pearson (7-0, 6 Kos) who fought for the L.A. Matadors two years ago in the World Boxing League. “I train a lot longer. You’re training for a 10 or 12 round fight now. But boxing is boxing.” “I look forward to beating and dominating guys and look forward... Read more...

Sam Solimon Beats Felix Sturm in IBF Eliminator PDF Print Email
Written by Michael Woods

imageTrainers, fighters, fans, take note. Showing up is half the battle, and Sam Solimon, the Aussie middleweight, re-proved the old adage on Friday night in Germany, as he bettered ex WBA 160 pound champ Felix Sturm, on Sturm's home turf, by scores of 116-111, 114-113 and 114-113. The bout continued a theme for the 34-year-old Sturm: decline. The Bosnian-born hitter started off fine, and he sent the 39-year-old Solimon the mat in round two. But the victor, who has proved himself to be a most stubborn soul, persevering even though he has 11 losses, was the busier man in the second half. He proved to the judges he wanted it more, and during stretches when Sturm was on radio silence, in watcher mode, Solimon threw. The more mobile man, Solimon had the busier feet in addition to the busier fists. For his trouble, it is likely he gets a crack at IBF champ Daniel Geale, who beat Anthony Mundine earlier in the week. Geale... Read more...
