Wilder Overwhelms Stiverne, Stopping Him in the Opening Round

Brooklyn’s Barclays Center saw Lou DiBella and the Premier Boxing Champions bring us world heavyweight title action on Showtime. The main event of the evening saw WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder defending his belt against Bermane Stiverne.

Wilder mowed Stiverne down in the very first round, scoring three knockdowns, the last of which compelled referee Arthur Mercante Jr. to waive it off. The official time was 2:49. Wilder is now 39-0 and can say that he stopped every opponent that was put in front of him. With the quick stoppage he hushed his detractors and showed that no marinating is necessary to make a fight between him and Anthony Joshua a mega-megafight.

Welterweight action saw former world champion Shawn Porter taking on Adrian Granados in a bout expected to be a crowd pleaser. The pair managed to deliver, as Granados made Porter work for the full twelve rounds.

The HBO broadcast kicked off with Sergey Lipinets vs Akihiro Kondo for the vacant IBF world title at 140 pounds. The two settled into a methodical, technical contest that saw Lipinets banking early rounds. After a better round in the fifth, an accidental headbutt by Kondo cut Lipinets in the sixth. Konda stayed strong and came forward for the rest of the fight as he pressured Lipinets.

Lipinets showed a resilient jab and no quit as he fought with blood streaming down his face. Heading into round 12, Lipinets, who had former multiple-time world champion Buddy McGirt as a coach and cornerman, felt he was ahead on the cards and Kondo did not have enough left to alter the course of the fight. After twelve hard fought rounds, the judges had a unanimous decision in favor of Sergey Lipinets.

Below are quick results for the featured fights of the evening. You can check back here at TSS throughout the weekend for more from our great writers.
