Peralta Hands Guerrero Upset Loss in Anaheim – Former two weight class world champion Robert Guerrero suffered a big setback last night in the main event of the Premier Boxing Champions card at the Honda Center and airing on Spike TV.  Guerrero lost a split decision to unheralded David Emanuel Peralta in a fight that saw Guerrero enter upwards of a -2000 favorite at many of the sports books.

Peralta was fighting his first fight outside of his native Argentina, and this was his first twelve round fight. Peralta had to overcome a slow start and a cut that developed around his eye in round three and worsened in round five. Guerrero landed the cleaner shots early, but Peralta was able to answer with a right hand that Guerrero seemed to have no answer for as the fight wore on. Peralta was able to take control of the fight by applying pressure and was effective using both hands to keep Guerrero at bay. Guerrero was knocked into a corner in round 9 by the biggest punch of the fight, and by the end of the fight his normally solid technique was looking haggard.

Having left the fight to the judges, the scores came back divided as two judges scored the fight for Peralta by scores of 116-112 and 115-113 and the other had the fight for Guerrero 115-113. The fight is a major setback for Guerrero, who was facing critics at 32 years old and was hoping to make a statement.

On the undercard, popular Alfredo Angulo, a loser in three of his last five fights, was looking to start one last run to the top. Unfortunately for him, veteran Willie Hernandez had other ideas, as he outboxed Angulo and won comfortably via scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93. Angulo will now hear the calls to retire more than ever, as this was a fight he was supposed to build off of.

Undefeated 2012 Olympian Terrell Gausha won a majority decision over a tough Steven Martinez with two judges scoring it 97-93 and the last judge having it even at 95-95. Gausha found himself facing a game Martinez, whose did his best work landing to the body. Neither fighter was afraid to exchange late in the fight, and in the final two rounds both men left it all in the ring. Gausha seemed to land the stronger punches as the men exchanged in the final rounds, perhaps making the difference with the two judges in the end.
