Mayweather Will Fight Sept. 12 on PPV, No “Freebie” Fight

TUESDAY UPDATE: Indications are that the Floyd’s next is on PPV is still the working plan, someone who should know told me…and we should get final word on that from the only source that matters, “TBE” himself, by this weekend, I am told. As best as I can tell, some folks in positions of power think the “freebie” fight is the best plan, being that fans have wallet fatigue, and many felt stung by the high sticker price of #MayPac, made more hurtful by the fact that Manny didn’t compete all that well. Thus, it’ll not be easy to sell Floyd on PPV next, unless he fights an outside the box Godzilla, like Gennady Golovkin. That’s not happening, not in his “going for 49-0” scrap, they will save a “Godzilla” for the 50-0…But it’s money that matters to “Money,” I think it’s fair to say, and he might not be inclined to see a forest for the trees, and leave something on the table, build up some needed goodwill from salty consumers, which would leave more of them open-minded to buying a, for example, Mayweather-Amir Khan bout for 50-0…All in all, this is rough intel, until tha man tells us his plan. So hold tight…

Sept. 12 is not that far away, and we are sort of down to the wire on plans for the next Floyd Mayweather fight.

Here’s the latest lowdown on what should be occurring as “TBE” looks to go to 49-0, one fight after enaging in the fight of the century, which resembled something much less than that when he schooled Manny Pacquiao.

It will take place Sept. 12, at the MGM in Las Vegas. He will fight Andre Berto. Alas, it will not be offered on CBS, a freebie, but will instead be offered on pay-per-view, a solid source informs TSS.

A CBS fight was on the table, embraced in many circles, seemingly a go…but ultimately the money matters had some folks uncomfortable with that outside-the-box plan.

Eyeballs are great but revenue is king, is I guess the message…

As always, I encourage readers to trust, but verify; Mayweather does his own thing, when and how he wants it. This will be the gospel truth, Twitter verified, when Mayweather himself tells us all. This could be the plan now, but change in three hours. Capisce?

It is official. Berto is the next victim. PPV is the platform. Floyd Mayweather announced Tuesday, August 4, late afternoon his plans for Sept. 12.

Thoughts, friends?

That should be worth $9.99 to some people, not me !

If this fight does not go to CBS and does go on PPV, it will be a monumental flop. It will rank up there with PPV disasters such as Roy Jones Jr-Eric Harding and Hopkins-Dawson I. It would be the kind of flop that would cost people their jobs. There are many reasons why this would flop on PPV. Some are very obvious such as the rumored opponent, Andre Berto. Berto was beaten up by Victor Ortiz, Robert Guerrero and Jesus Soto Karass. And was losing to Josesito Lopez before scoring a come from behind KO in a fight he was not looking all to sharp. This is the guy to be a PPV sell against Floyd Mayweather. But think about this too...You, me and the boxing community has been on the mindset for weeks this would be free. Yes we were upset about the rumored opponent but it would be free. We are not happy but its free. That's the mindset, free. Good luck now selling this for $59.95 (and an extra $10 for HD) when we were sold on it being free. In addition, there are other PPV fights that fans are going to be much more eager to plunk their hard earned money over to watch. Remember the saturation in PPV last year and how we saw PPV revenue get affected by there being so many fights. Fans were picky over what they bought due to their being so many and the PPV's of Mayweather-Maidana were hurt be this. So already we have seen fans skip Mayweather fights (knowing how he fights and how his fights tend to be lopsided) for other options. Well Golovkin-Lemieux is rumored to be in the works for PPV in October. And Canelo-Cotto for November. These are two great action fights on paper and will be worth every cent spent on PPV. I think if a PPV gets skipped by fans, even diehards, it will obviously be Mayweather-Berto. I think what may end up happening is the fight ends up on Showtime. The executives have to know it will flop on PPV for the reasons above, they can't be that dumb. By putting it on Showtime, the execs can push this as a way to pick up subscribers which they are far behind HBO. Or we could see something unique like this fight being offered online only for $9.99. Haymon is supposedly already kicking the tires on an online subscriber boxing network similar to WWE and this may be a good test market for his vision down the road.

No doubt that this scrap will be a flop on PPV at even 99 cent a pop. Money May is the most booed pug on the globe. Baddest man on the planet he missed badly. Holla!

-The Good Doctor :

If in fact it's Berto which it probably is, what do you guys say to an over-under 400K buys. I got under.

I got under 200k. Holla!

-oubobcat :

It really depends on the price. If it's the traditional PPV ($49 to $69), it will be under 400k. I would set a range of 150k to 300k. However, if they try something say online for between $9.99 and $14.99, the buys will obviously be much higher. We should know more in the next week.

Thinking about this more, could this all be a ploy by Mayweather. There seems to be one source that was leaking the PPV story to many media outlets yesterday. Could this be an intentional leak? What I mean by this is word already got out that the fight could go to CBS. So that became the expectation among fans and took any thunder out of an announcement by Mayweather. So by leaking this to the media and resetting the expectations would once again make a surprise announcement by Mayweather saying that it is CBS have a lot more thunder. And his thinking could be by doing so, I look like a good guy putting my foot down and demanding my next fight be free for my fans. Something to think about...We will see, an announcement should be coming this week.

Money May is an archmaster bulljiver. If he dances with Berto, it will be on CBS. There will be no moolah made on PPV. Money May couldn't draw flies there fighting a nameless in-group pug. Holla!

And so begins the first phase of what will probably be an episodic adventure and series of misconceptions about what Floyd is really doing and how he will do it. Best not to invest too heavily and emotionally in it folks. Especially since Floyd doesn't entertain (in terms of KOs and going for the kill) nearly as good as some of the other fighters out there. I mean, like Floyd cares and his 50th fight is not up for the highest bidder and/or a fat contract extension. His alias is Money not Impecunious or Penniless. I am not going to be surprised to see Floyd fight Berto or circumvent the notion; that allows his associates to gauge what will sell the best. :) :)

-gibola :

Berto's slow feet, wide punches, porous defence, lack of head movement and diminished chin make him an appalling choice of opponent for Mayweather. He won't win a round or pose any threat and don't say he has a puncher's chance - he hasn't. It's yet another pressure guy (count'em - PBF loves 'em pressure fighters) except this time it's a faded, not-very-good pressure guy for Mayweather to eat up. Don't blame PBF - if people are willing to buy it he's done the right thing and Berto's wade-in, hit-me style is sure to cause PBF more trouble than Amir Khan's jab, speed and mobility eh guys?

Just got off my facebook page, the feedback for this fight is horrifically terrible, if I could forecast the numbers I would say PPV sales will be 420,000 or less judging by initial responses I can empathize with those who have no interest. But with the early buzz being so negative, this may be my only chance to see mayweather live,.. So I'm just putting this out there,.... Mr Woods, and Mr Divinci, if you need a correspondent to deliver a concise report of the fight in meticulous detail, dont hesitate to call, my daughter just moved to Arizona so I can be in close proximity of the fight at least 3 days in advance...Just sayin' Plus it should be relatively easy for me to get a ticket for this event, or I could use one of my many disguises to gain access. Sometimes harsh times require hard solutions

Gee whiz. The big one. If you buy this, you are perverted. That said: War Berto! Joking! Just joking.
