Rumors Playing Out, Mayweather Takes Issue With Ellerbe’s Performance

The rumors were kicking around since right after fight night that there was trouble in Mayweatherville, most specifically the part having to do with Mayweather Promotions, and some of the duties performed by right hand man Leonard Ellerbe.

Ex right hand man if you read the latest news up on Fight Hype, Floyd’s preferred outlet to drop news. Mayweather told writer Ben Thompson that, “Once people start making power moves without communicating with me, then I think it’s time for us to move our separate ways. I mean, I’m glad the fight is over with, but I think when May comes around and you guys see All Access in May, I’ll have a totally new team and probably a totally new staff. We may make a lot of changes in my team, but Al Haymon ain’t going nowhere.”

The “people” he was referring to, it is clear, seems to be Ellerbe, who he said screwed up ticketing for Mayweather’s family to the Sept. 13 clash against Marcos Maidana. Also, Floyd said he’s no longer on the same page as Ellerbe, who rose up from security man to a place where he was taking a lead role at pressers and on matters concerning the growing stable of Mayweather Promotions.

I was told about the possible split Monday and reached out to proper channels, people in the know, on Monday. I was told that high level people were asked and that the rumor was dismissed as just that. I re-asked another in the know person Wednesday and was again told that there was no “there” there. Now, the Fight Hype story has Floyd taking issue with defending a 147 and 154 belt against Maidana, and blaming Ellerbe for that move, but he stops short of declaring that Ellerbe is being dumped. “People outgrow each other,” he said regarding Ellerbe, which certaintly sounds like divorce language.

Reading between the lines, it looks like there was a Mayweather blowup after the fight, and people were thinking and hoping that it would blow over, emotions would dwindle, feathers would get unruffled. Seems like the feathers are staying put in place…

“I just want to be able to communicate with anybody that I work with,” Mayweather told Thompson. “Once people start making power moves without communicating with me, then I think it’s time for us to move our separate ways.”

People are speculating that maybe Floyd will be asking Richard Schaefer on board, should Schaefer be able to extricate himself from his Golden Boy contract, which may last until 2018. If so, that would make sense that Floyd is now finding fault with Ellerbe’s management style. From a business standpoint, it’s a no brainer to have Schaefer running MP. From a loyalty standpoint, eh…

Readers, what say you. Put on your thinking caps and tell us how you think this all plays out.

I ain't getting into this one. But for a while I told people that Dick Schaefer was playing Big Money Oscar and was getting too "BIG for his britches" and would be "syetcanned." Outta TMT, I have been hearing that "a lot "n*gig*shyt" is happening "with gay-@$$ Ellerbee." You can pull up some old "Hustle Boss('$)" interviews and hear Pops Joy Mays saying: "My son is gonna get rid of Ellerbee.... Ellerbee is gay. And my son is gonna call it a day." Holla!

I think Floyd is internalizing the pain and grief of being ground down to a pulp by the media.. ..in addition to needing a scapegoat for the money teams first independent promotional venture.( a fiasco) Floyd has fought and struggled to "do it his way and cut out the middle man" since the beginning.... This should have been his coming out party. But they did it with a shot fighter (Angulo) and a co-main event that involved the booking of the most anti-entertaining-entity known to boxing .....Miguel Vasquez. (We won't even speak aloud about who allowed the mismatch between Santa Cruz and his former sparring partner). They must have thought they were getting a bargain. And the most egregious insult was booking Mayweather into a hostile interview on CNN. Where Floyd was accused, abused, and refused by the news casting giant and his video feed was cut while the newscaster lobbied the audience to boycott his PPV event right before the Maidana fight. What a welcome! So much for free advertising. Also his 80 year old cut man (The legendary cut man and hand wrapping expert Garcia) was miffed because Floyd used "Do it All" Bob to wrap his hands). And has apparently flown the coup (possibly). If you notice Ellerbe wasn't in the corner. Change the team ....change the perception. Erase the past by disposing the baggage. Lionel Richie left the Comadores... Diana Ross left the supremes, Beyonce left Destinies Child. Apparently Floyd wants to make some cuts of his own and as we all know..... " $hit rolls downhill".

-Kid Blast :

Think Schaefer.

-amayseng :

The turtle Ellerbe is out, literally and figuratively.

-deepwater2 :

Floyd has to blame someone. Ellerbe was the ultimate yes man. It's too late Floyd, admit it. It's all downhill from here. As soon as Espinoza is fired who will tsAH tell what to do?

-deepwater2 :

Schaefer is stuck ,he is still under contract to Oscar. TsAH is going to have to give Oscar something really big to release the Swiss banker. Which fighters will tsAH allow to sign multifight deals with GBP? Floyd's last fight failed and once Canelo heads to HBO like Hopkins ,Espinoza will be gone along with tsAH and his influence to put on tune up fights on premium cable.

-SouthPawFlo :

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out

Floyd has indeed reached an impasse on his pursuit to granduer and incalculable wealth. But he's still a big wheel in the boxing world. He's still rich and he can still fight .....and fight well. He's accomplished more than any boxer who preceded him with the possible exception of Oscar ( financially). I don't feel sorry for him .... He's still a "made" man... I just wonder if his empire implodes under the stress of his imperfections and he burns out in a blaze of self destructive glory... Or if he can renew and rebuild. I don't under estimate a surviver like Mayweather. Either way the media will be keeping a close eye.... Insuring that he remains relevant for a while longer.

-riverside :

I wonder is Richard Schaefer really wants to join Mayweather promotions, he see's all the chaos that attracts Money May. You got to remember he was his own Boss at golden boy, Oscar pretty much let him run the company and Schaefer did well. With Floyd in charge instructing Schaefer what to do at all moments, will not work! they'll be bumping heads from the get go. Or I can see Richard Schaefer if he ever works for Mayweather, pending golden boy's contract terminated, I can see Richard making a hard binding contract, so he is not pushed around! like today you have a job, tomorrow you don't. another issue With the Cinco de Mayo fight date up in the air for next year, looks like Money May is going to get bumped out of the MGM for that day, and Money May Knows it, I think there is more turmoil than where his daughter was seated.

-flackoguapo :

hmmm... not looking good. Is this for real or media hype and scapegoating on part of $$May? Shadow?? where you at bro...I know you looked up some interesting, hidden gems by now lol

I like how you keep it real. LOL. He has said that, yes. And yes, you see that NS all the time. Most here with the exception of the Commish, Doc, BS and maybe Amayseng and Deep won't know what you mean but it is what it is. Ben is a good dude.

Snoop Dogg says you gotta close the gap. The question is who closes it? If you outgrow a motherfucka, he stays stagnant but you progress. Now it's up to him to close the gap. If you choose to close the gap and step backwards you lose. Richard Schaefer and Al Haymon are winners. Floyd is closing that gap. (And he talks to Rich like he does Al, with respect and admiration.) Warren Buffet is the ultimate winner. Floyd wants to close that gap. Mark Cuban is a winner. Floyd wants to close that gap. Once you start picking the brains of men like Buffet, a roody poo MBA from Las Vegas Chinatown KFC Busines School ain't that impressive no more, though it was initially. I know, yes, I do. He ain't impressed no more. I've pointed this sh*t out all before. I think the absence of Schaefer has spoken volumes about the quality of cards. Love Schaefer or hate him, when he put stuff together, you had value. That's just what it is. Kevin iole wrote that this was Ellerbe's one and only shot. Here's what happened: the undercard wasn't finalized until like five weeks prior to the show. Think that would've happened with Schaefer? Nah. Of course not. Schaefer -- trust me on this one -- had he not gotten into this mess, would've had Rigondeaux and Santa Cruz squaring off on that a$$. Though they call them allies, Schaefer can actually get Haymon to match his guys and deliver super fights.

-The Shadow :

And I had no idea they would split bc Floyd is a loyal guy but I understand. Haymon is going to get Swizzy free, he'll give him a few fighters and they'll be straight, unlike LE and KB. Or something.

Money May and Warren Buffet are rolling, rolling rolling! And the haters are trolling, trolling, trolling. But don't hate da BIG-MONEY playas. Hate da money play and say what you say. It won't halt their play or pay.

I can imagine there would be turmoil in the organisation with the situation they have. Serial losers in their stable, identity issues; naturally leading to promotional issues as they struggle to create any fresh appeal or interest in their brand, amidst a new crop of young, exciting and extremely skilled fighters. If all your promotional company has to promote is quite frankly a bit s**t, then there will be problems, and the top man would gladly blame those around him rather than turn his criticism inwards. Unfortunately, Floyd seems to be becoming more reserved, alone and and cold hearted. Such is the way with all men with absolute power, who remain at the top too long.

This place is still my most favorite read and it's been too long. I'm in the forty third round and I ain't going to lie or front out, I needed an eight count, so, I've taken it. Getting my footing back... Ducking and dodging... Working myself back into the life fight. This rambling won't likely make sense but it's sorta designed that way cause I love my privacy. 24/7 and All Access would never ever be allowed inside my home ..but if they were the ratings would exceed anything they've ever seen. Lmfao. Good late night read, brethren! Thank you. Annnnnnnnd still!
