Guerrero Says He Will “Humble” Floyd Mayweather

Six-Time and Four-Division World Champion Guerrero Will Face
WBC Welterweight World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather
Saturday, May 4, at MGM Grand in Las Vegas Live on SHOWTIME PPV®

NEW YORK (March 26, 2013) – It's been a couple of hectic but satisfying and productive days for Robert Guerrero, who along with his wife, Casey, appeared on “The 700 Club” with Pat Robertson and Terry Meeuwsen on Monday in Virginia Beach, Va., met Robin Roberts on the set of “Good Morning America” in New York City on Tuesday and then later in the morning were joined by Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports®, Stephen Espinoza for an “invite-only” media brunch at Vanderbilt Suites in The MetLife Building in Midtown Manhattan.

During Tuesday's brunch, which was emceed by Golden Boy Promotions Chief Operating Officer, David Itskowitch, Guerrero (above in picture by Tom Casino of SHOWTIME), who turns 30 on Wednesday, was presented with a birthday cake.

Guerrero, a Six-Time and Four-Division World Champion, will challenge undefeated Eight-Time and Five-Division World Champion Floyd Mayweather for the WBC Welterweight World Championship on Saturday, May 4, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The event, which will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV®, starts at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Below is what Guerrero, Espinoza and Itskowitch said Tuesday.

“I want to thank everyone involved, Golden Boy and SHOWTME especially. I'm excited for this fight. Man, I just can't wait to get out there and fight Floyd Mayweather. I plan to shock the world.

“It's funny because I've been talking to the media and telling them that I'm going to beat Floyd. Now, it's time to get out there and do it. I'm ready. A lot of people think I'm crazy, but I think you're crazy for thinking that I'm crazy. Just look at my wife. She asked the Lord to heal her and He did.

“When you believe, amazing things happen. I'm telling you all now that I am going to beat him. I believe God does things for a reason. I believe he put me here to humble Floyd Mayweather, and it is going to happen.''

“We wanted to put this breakfast together partially to promote the fight, but anybody who knows anything about boxing knows that this is going to be a tough, tough fight. Anybody who says Mayweather is too fast, too strong and too good for Robert, well, they were saying that before Robert's fight with (Andre) Berto too.

“We wanted to make sure the East Coast knew about Robert. Knew how classy he is and how wonderful he is as an individual. It will be an incredible event on May 4. Dave (Itskowitch) said this will be the toughest fight of Robert's career. I think at the end of it, this will also be the toughest fight of Mayweather's career.''

“Robert Guerrero is an amazing fighter in the ring, but he is probably a more amazing person out of the ring. I know his story has been told a lot, but I don't think it has been told enough.

“The first fight we worked with him was in 2007. We got a call the day before the fight's final press conference with the horrifying news about Casey. I couldn't believe when he walked into the room that he was going to fight a few days later. The fight happened. He blitzed Martin Honorio in less than a minute. I guess he wanted to get back home to Casey.

“When Casey's condition got worse, he had a decision to make. He had to give up his title to take care of her. A lot of people questioned his decision, but it was the right thing to do. He's now sitting in front of us facing the biggest fight of his career.''

“MAY DAY: “Mayweather vs. Guerrero, a 12-round fight for Mayweather's WBC Welterweight World Championship, is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona, O'Reilly Auto Parts, AT&T and Star Trek Into Darkness. Also featured will be Daniel Ponce de Leon vs. Abner Mares, a 12-round fight for Ponce de Leon's WBC Featherweight World Championship.

The Lord said you shall put no idol before me. You shall be humble in your accomplishments. Floyd needs humbled its true. Floyd thanks God and acts a Christian but his actions speak otherwise.

Bigstinybug lmao I think your right but I hope wrong.

-ali :

Floyd thanks god and acts Christian but his actions speak otherwise. Real sh!t amayseng!!

-Radam G :

Lil' Floyd will make the Cali Holy Ghost stumble and make him tumble in one easy rumble. Hehehe! The Cali Holy Ghost oughta cut out all the darn holy mumbling. Himself he needs some humbling. Holla!

-ali :

Guerrero is sounding like Mayweather now Im pretty sure god doesn't want Guerrero beat up anyone just to humble them. Come on guys god is not picking sides just pray that you and your opponent is ok when the fight is over.

-amayseng :

i think the ghosts point in all of this is that his faith has lead him to this opportunity, the opportunity to educate the WORLD in healing and helping cancer patients, his faith that helped him get through such a devestating time. not sure if any of you have been with a family member day in and day out dealing with chemo and radiation but truly you are watching them slowly dying and healing from this horrible treatments.... those treatments kill both bad and good cells, its a horrible thing to have to endure... the ghost endured and more importantly his wife has been healed, he feels truly blessed and it has been his faith as his staple to endure all this.. add in a couple children and you have to understand what a horrible time the Guerrerros have gone through..... all he has endured and now he has the chance to fight and beat the best fighter in the last ten years (arguably radam) its faith that carries the ghost... hes not saying God has chosen him to beat another human being half to death... i feel he is saying the Lord has given him a path, and that path has these opportunities, and floyd mayweather has not been representing God the correct way and the ghost has the ability to humble him or change him or beat him...

I think it will be close for a bit .Roberts best chance is to rough Floyd up in the first few rounds and go toe to toe. If Floyd makes his adjustments and gets comfortable then he will pot shot and cruise . Floyd might go toe to toe since his legs don't move as much as they used to. Guerrero has to basically go for it and not stay on the back foot for too long . He can do it but so can Floyd . Guerrero must hit on break ,hit with free hand, throw off all of Floyd's rhythm before he settles in

I just reviewed the Floyd hatton fight and also the Roberto and berto fight. If Robert fights Floyd like he did berto and similarly how hatton charged in at Floyd the Robert will be knocked out by round 6. Hatton had better quickness and great footwork to keep up with Floyd but got pit shotted in the way in all night. The ghosts best chance is to fight at distance, Not box at distance but fight at distance in the pocket moving left and throwing left hooks to the body with straight rights and right hooks to the body then getting out of the pocket. Control the pace , throw 2-4 punches sharply not wasting and out of the pocket Then by mid fight start throwing that left hybrid hook coming low toward the chin

-ali :

Amayseng if that's what he is saying I don't have a problem with that

-Radam G :

Danggit, amayseng! That was the key! Did you pickpocket Lil' Floyd and steal it? Somebody is going to hell. Hehehe! Holla!

-SouthPaul :

I personally won't be reading too much of either Guerrero or Floyd from now till night of fight. Floyd replying from his WWE script .... Rarely says anything interesting even when you can dial him in... god being the response to just about everything Guerrero is asked ...yea... Not a very compelling build up. I do admire Guerrero's ability to preserver. If Floyd somehow miraculously goes A.D.D and loses his ability to focus ... He might find himself behind the eight ball.

-amayseng :

Radam I have been studying Floyd more than any fighter for years. 3 years ago I don't believe even this strategy would win. But as of 36 and less dynamic spurts Floyd I feel would be vulnerable to be out pointed with this strategy. Go left force him to his right jab towards his left shoulder Left hook to the body right hook to the body left hook body step back control pace and distance. From time to time add in that left hybrid hook coming from down low. The key is to throw combos while Floyd is bent down to his right The mentality is to score on activity. 3-4 combos beat Floyd's pot shots. Hence calzaghe beating Hopkins on activity. I had Hopkins winning but I understand how joe won the judges

-Carmine Cas :

I agree with you amayseng, Floyd also says he's closer to 40 than 21 but he acts like a child. He's such a hypocrite, on top of that one of his boxers gets popped for a high test level. In addition I also agree with your strategy to an extent. He doesn't need to rough up floyd at first, fight at a distance, use the jab and that left hand and move to the right. Unless he comes in with angles and feints, fighting Floyd on the inside isn't the wisest. What he can do is stay on the outside, and when Floyd makes an adjustment, rough him up

-Radam G :

Thou Cali Holy Ghost listens not to thee, but to something not of self-thinking humans. So thou Lil' Floyd willeth holy ghostbusterized he. Hehehe! Holla!

-amayseng :

hatton tried to rough floyd up, floyd just hit and held all night and hatton got warned a million times while floyd was hitting and holding tying up.. he also tied cotto up for 8 rounds.. ortiz had it right, fight at distance, apply pressure, fight at distance, rough up, distance pressure, change change change.. rewatch the ortiz fight and u will see victor getting to floyd at times alot actually.. see floyd is so accurate his shots look good, he is so slick the shots on floyd didnt look to land but in slow motion they were decent shots.. i think if victor took floyd 12 rounds it would have been really really close...just for the fact ortiz has such a physical advantage, and he was no slack, def in shape.... but instead victor was an idiot... the ghost has to fight at range, with his pace, move out of the pocket when he wants.. he needs to take hopkins gameplane, control pace and distance, fight when u want.. DO NOT box floyd...

-Carmine Cas :

Victor came straight at Floyd, you can't do that. As I stated previously you need use angles and feints to, A la Ponce De Leon-Adrien Broner, this why pacquiao was considered a very tough match up for floyd till he tasted Marquez' right hand. You have to counter the counter puncher, force and reaction out of Floyd and catch him off guard. Attacking Floyd in a linear fashion without disguising you're offense will result in failure. That straight left behind proper head movement feints and angles will be the key for Guerrero

-amayseng :

Excellent example carmin I had ponce beating broner. Although Floyd is much better than broner the rules still apply. One thing I noticed is Floyd doesn't exchange or throw when his opponent is throwing. He times and lands shots. One thing that really caught my eye was that Floyd negotiated a rematch clause in the contract.
