Born in North Hollywood, Markarian graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history. He wrote a thesis on the Political Effect of Black Heavyweight Boxers in the 20th century and then penned freelance pieces for various outlets. In January 2008, the San Francisco resident became a member of the Boxing Writers Association of America. His stories have been published in magazines across the world, including China and France. Raymond enjoys educating teens about the history of pugilism. In September of 2008, Markarian began a weekly Boxing Club at Millennium High School in Tracy, CA, where he is a teacher, and students watch classic fights and debate the politics of the sport.
