What Counts On Saturday night the Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya fights, after 21 months of inactivity since his KO loss to business partner Bernard Hopkins, what may or may not be his last bout as a professional, against the Mad Dog from Nicaragua, aka The Matador, aka WBC super welterweight champ Ricardo Mayorga, live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on HBO PPV. De La Hoya (37-4, 29 KOs) claims that Mayorga (28-5-1, 23 KOs) and his insults, slapping and whatnot have lit the fires in the belly of the beast, but not quite convincingly, not as though he really and truly means it. Still, this is the big bout of the moment, featuring two marquee names, fighting for a title and, possibly, for a future of active duty. There’s talk of Oscar – “If everything goes well” – planning for a farewell superfight against Winky Wright, Felix Trinidad or Floyd Mayweather Jr. If things don’t go well and he loses on Saturday, will Oscar retire after the bout with Mayorga? |

Witter A Slapper, A Flapper (A Career In The Crapper?)
"Another upset! I keep making the right bet. I never thought for a moment that Witter was a good boxer or a hitter. He is just another slapper and a big-mouth flapper. In the hurt business, no word can hit you like a fist. He got knocked on his butt, and his words didn't cushion his fall. Hopefully, he will now shut up. More of today's boxers should learn the art of hurting, and cut out all this garbage of hyping. All the sightings of "Big Foot" and "UFOs" have been delusions, but these sightings of upsets in 2008 boxing are hard realities." ---TSS reader Radam is lovin' the upsets
