In 2000, he was co-winner (with George Kimball) of the Boxing Writers Association of America award for best column. In 2001, the BWAA awarded him first place for best investigative-enterprise story.
He is the son of former No. 1 light heavyweight contender, Irish Bobby Cassidy.
