TSS PREDICTION PAGE: Marquez-Diaz II--Who Ya LIke?

By Michael Woods

The kid is impossible to root against. Humble, respectful, ambitious, a true credit to himself, his family, his upbringing, his heritage and to the sport, Juan Diaz is a boxer who you have to hope makes it as big as possible in this most dangerous game.

But EM thinks that the kid will not be graced with the W on Saturday night, in his rematch with the Mexican ace Juan Manuel Marquez. The two tangled in a swell scrap in February 2009, and it looked by all accounts that The Baby Bull had grown adult horns, and was going to gore Marquez, who looked like a geriatric bullfighter stricken by a bad bout of arthritis early on at the Toyota Center. But then the bullfighter's juices got flowing, and The Baby Bull found himself sucking the air, looking for some extra oxygen to feed his burning and failing lungs. The bullfighter administered the coup de grace, the finishing thrust, in the ninth round, and was awarded a TKO9 win for his trouble.

Diaz (now 25-3, with just 17 KOs) gloved up twice since then, both times against Paulie Malignaggi. The first time, savoring the Gale Van Hoy Advantage, he won a controversial decision (UD12)  in his hometown. In that rematch, in Chicago, Malignaggi handily outboxed him (UD12). Diaz didn't look stellar, as he allowed Malignaggi to stick, and move his way to the win. The Diaz effort looked a tad bit worse after we saw what Amir Khan did to Paulie in the Brooklyner's most recent outing.

We wondered, had The Baby Bull peaked, at age 26? A pro since 2000, had too many fights, and too much gym-wear, simply diminished him?

We still wonder.

And sad to say, EM has an inkling that the Bulls' best days may have come in 2007, when he retired Acelino Freitas. Moving forward, Diaz' all action style, his punches in bunches manner, I figured, would make up for a distinct lack of power.

Didn't really pan out that way.

He lost to Nate Campbell, and had a war against Michael Katsidis, the sort that takes a year or two or more off a career for someone who came in less than fresh.

But hope still reigns. The Bull is still snorting, still pawing the dirt, still ready to rumble. He says he has his head on straight, that he isn't fighting for money, or fame, or for any of the wrong reasons now. (Floyd Mayweather might argue with Diaz as to what the "right" reasons to fight are, but anyway...) He says his fitness is the best it's ever been, and that he isn't ready to pursue that law degree he's working on, or go full-time into the construction business he and his brother run.

It brings me no joy to write this, it almost goes without saying, but I see Diaz coming out on the short end at the Mandalay Bay on Saturday. Not because his head isn't on straight, or his fitness isn't as advertised. But because he has limitations, and those will be exploited by the savvy sniper Marquez (50-5).

JMM could, of course, get old overnight. Heck, he's basically old now. The guy turns 37 next month. Maybe he gets overwhelmed on Saturday, maybe he can't pull the trigger, maybe his "muscles get tight," like Shane Mosley's did against Floyd Mayweather two months ago.

But I doubt it.

What about you?

Weigh in. Who ya like?

Pearl sippin' on gin n juice:  JMM is the most overrated fighter of the last decade. He's awful. It's amazing that he gave Pacquiao as much trouble as he did. Doesn't say much for Pacquiao, but I digress. I'm going with Diaz in this one. He doesn;t have much power but neither does Marquez. They'll battle back and forth for 12 with a decision going to the "Baby Bull", unanimnously.

#1 PacFan:  The only way Diaz wins this fight is if he somehow finds a way to make his fists as heavy as Pacquiao's. Marquez was tagged a lot more in the five rounds compared to Pacquiao's 24. Diaz was able to bully Marquez around the the ring but not in the power category. Marquez took a soft beating but was able to figure him out in time. So I expect Marquez to end it early by TKO.
Friday Jul 30, 2010 07:39:40 PM
Karlos:  This is the fight of the year. No doubt about it, biggest and best fight in all of boxing. I'm going with the urine er vitamin drinker Juan Marquez. I think he's going to win by knockout in the 5th round. FOTY.
Friday Jul 30, 2010 07:43:19 PM
in touch:  Marquez wins this. Baby Bull struggled against a non-puncher, mallanagi. Marquez is certainly a better boxer/puncher than paulie. This fight might not live up to expectation -- only because it might be one-sided. When one fighter controls the fight, the drama is gone and, for that reason, the viewer tunes out. Baby bull doesn't have a punch to change the course of the fight when he falls behind. And in this one, i see him falling behind.
Friday Jul 30, 2010 07:50:30 PM
brownsugar:  Diaz was actually ahead in the last fight...although you could see that JMM was sapping him continuously throught out the fight with pinpoint uppercuts and body shots...like a seasoned chess player,.. JMM sacrificed a bishop, a knight and a few pawns... to win the queen and topple the king....Diaz admitted that his last ditch suicidal aggression was because he was badly cut and figured that he might as well go out swinging . Whether that was commendable or just the product of a fatalistic mentality I don't know... but I would have hoped Diaz would have been more tenacious and tried a different tactic... it's not like Shields didn't give him any options.....I'm eager to see what JMM brings to the table... both men look very comfortable and in fighting shape...Diaz has been working the stairmaster to fortify his legs incase his bell gets rung and promises a more strategical fight...I want to see Diaz win..but JMM has to be the practical choice...JMM... by opening another cut and capitolizing.
Friday Jul 30, 2010 07:50:50 PM
El Maromero:  I hope they fight like last time, JMM by KO again

Keith:  I expect the same FOTY kind of fight, minus the KO. Diaz UD Marquez
Friday Jul 30, 2010 08:47:20 PM
Da Unknown Comic:  116-112 Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Leonard did NOTHING!
Friday Jul 30, 2010 10:04:09 PM
Blood:  I expect a similar fight to their last, with the KO coming earlier. That's generally wht happens after you fight a guy that kayoed you. Any interest in a 10-man Fantasy Football TSS league?
Friday Jul 30, 2010 11:44:00 PM
MORRY:  i dont see diaz finding a way to beat marquez, i dont know if diaz will be koed this time but he will lose. what i would actually like to see is paulie vs marquez after this one, but i think they will feed marquez to khan next. but i truly think paulie and marquez would be a great fight, with paulie pulling it out on pure skill and speed. marquez def wouldnt stop paulie and he cant out box him, so it would be a fun fight to watch
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 12:14:35 AM
Frank Z:  you have to wonder what would have happend in the last fight had diaz not gotten cut. of course you can also say that the way he fights makes him prone to getting cut. since they've fought before i'm sure marquez will not have to spend the early rounds feeling diaz's speed and pressure as much as last time. i don't think marquez's loss to mayweather took much out of him. he lost almost every round but mayweather did not punish him much simply because he didn't throw enough punches to, but you have to wonder if pushing 37 he's been to the well too often. if i had to pick i'm still gonna go with marquez by TKO. too tough, to cagey, to smart and too well measured with his punches to lose to a guy who only comes straight in throwing arcing shots.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 12:45:05 AM
MisterLee:  Easy fight for Marquez.. even tho they're both coming from the losing streak (diaz losing to marquez and then twice to malignaggi) and then marquez to floyd, 135-140 is more marquez's natural weight, even tho he's small even for a light weight (which shows how great he really ). Marquez by 8th round tko. total dominance this time.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 02:20:52 AM
Anony [repost]:  THAT PHOTO TELLS THE OUTCOME OF THE FIGHT ALREADY... Díaz looks drained and pale as he might have forgotten he is not a kid anymore and it is about time to move up in weight. On the contrary, JMM looks as his normal self. Strong and ready. I think JMM wants to win this one in a BIG fashion. He wants Pacquiao badly. I rather watch him against Pacman, definitely more action than Scareweather.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 02:33:44 AM
Dreaming a Dream:  This will be a re-run of the first fight. I like Diaz, but he is a one trick pony and can only fight as the aggressor. Marquez will no doubt win the fight and perhaps do it sooner. No intrigue at all for me in this fight. Just can't see JMM losing to Diaz.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 03:39:24 AM
Isaiah:  @Who ever made the top 40 p4p reader list and put me in as #1. Thank you. That's quite an honor. Most of the posters in here are all worthy for the top spots. All I can I do is work hard and tell the truth. I'm glad you appreciate my style so much. Again, with such a talent pool in here, it's quite an honor just to be in the top 10. I never thought someone would rank me #1. Like Manny Pacquiao, I will not boast and run my mouth like a Mayweather, but simply smile, shake your hand if I could and say I'm glad you appreciate my no nonsense approach.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 05:07:53 AM
Isaiah:  @Radam G. You are wrong again and not just by a little, but severly like when you picked Chris Arreola over Vitali Klitschko and then refused to admit you were wrong. Juan Manuel Marquez overrated? Urine drinking or not, he's still one of the best fighters in the world and you know the old saying about if' you've knocked a man out once, it'll be easier the second time. Take heed to that because it applies this time. I'm sure your response to this will probaly be something about me, but NOT addressing me. Of course, I would expect no less... The way you duck and run, you really should be a Mayweather fan. By the way, Manny Pacquiao called and said for you to stop stalking him.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 05:17:39 AM
the Roast:  I'm feeling JMM by UD. Diaz will try to box more than slug but that won't work. JMM is the better boxer and will win this 116-112. Diaz best chance is to let it all hang out early but he wants to show his improvement. I would love to see Pacman-JMM 3. Best of luck to both fighters.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 05:48:44 AM
oskar:  JMM by a close D... JMM is not a light weight but enough technical skill to perform at that division and its the highest weight he can go.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 06:25:15 AM
arb:  I'll pick diaz to win this bout simply because of his punches in bunches and strength. Diaz will bring the old warrior down inside 10.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 06:39:18 AM
Isaiah:  Guys like Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley and the Klitschko brothers are guys that it's possible not to like them but you just have to be out of your mind not to respect them. There are many more, but these are top names of guys who have been in the sport a long time and simply scream respect. It can't be denied. Go ahead. Call Marquez a urine drinker or a canvass kisser. Ignorant people will do this because they are blind to obvious greatness and a future hall of famer. It would be a real shame if Marquez and Pacquiao didn't meet at 140 for one more go around. I think that weight would be fair enough. You can't expect Manny to go any lower than that at this point and that would be greatly more entertaining than Pacquiao/Mayweather. Oh, and just because I can. I thought I'd go ahead and kill yet another Mayweather excuse for the Pacman fight not happening. You know how Mayweather Sr. said the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight won't happen this year due to the IRS. Well, let's break this down shall we? Floyd is no doubt in the highest tax bracket whether he makes $40 million or $100 million this year. Agree on that so far? Good. Let's continue. If you notice the fact that the taxes go up by 7% next year, you'll notice Mayweather costs himself around $4 million dollars or more by not fighting the Pacman this year. Oh wait. Is Floyd still telling his handful of fans that he's just on "vacation," "not into boxing right now," or "hyping up the fight for next year?" How much more do you all exoect the fight to be hyped up? The WHOLE WORLD already wants to see this fight. Greed and cowardness will do strange things to men. Look, here's the truth, bottom line, no BS. Mayweather is not afraid of Pacquiao per se, but he's so terrified of an opponent that could "possibly" beat him, that he won't fight him for ANY offer. It's simple. Once Mayweather loses that undefeated record, (and against Pacquiao, that's VERY POSSIBLE) he's finished. No one will pay to watch his boring circus. Shut and close case boxing fans. That why Manny earns our respect and Floyd is a reject.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 06:52:35 AM
ultimoshogun:  Looking forward to another all action fight between these two....I got JMM by UD or late round stoppage around 11 or 12.
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 02:35:01 PM
teaser:  to me JMM looked slow in the first fight .....he is fading but still has the heart and skills to pull this one off.....and the Baby Bull is not what he used to be either .....I don't think he can be effective unless he fights in his all out style.....so much for him saying he is going to pace himself ....JMM gets him again
Saturday Jul 31, 2010 03:37:48 PM
destructor:  who cares!! whoever wins will loose their next fight anyway.these guys are not ppv worthy.
