Kelly Pavlik And Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. A Go For Dec. 4?

By Michael Woods

A stick of dynamite has been inserted, and lit, on Kelly Pavlik.

Manager Cameron Dunkin knows in his gut that the Youngstown native, with a proper training regimen, away from the comfort and safety of his native region, could and should be able to reign at 160 pounds.

He could and should be able to take down 41-0 Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Dec. 4, a bout which Dunkin says Bob Arum is in the midst of making. "We are on board with that," Dunkin told TSS on Wednesday.

But this "on board" is vastly different than the "on board" of the recent past. Dunkin is insisting, and says Pavlik (36-2 with 32 KOs) is open to enlisting the aid of expert nutritionists, dieticians and fitness trainers, so he can train the right way, and safely and effectively make 160 pounds.

"We'll get out of Ohio" for a Chavez Jr fight, Dunkin says,"and we'll watch him in a hotel 24-7."

"Sounds like you're talking about Keith Richards back in the day," I said to Dunkin.

He chuckled, but explained further. Kelly hooking on with local fitness experts, this guy with a rubber band regimen, that one with a banging-tires-with-a-sledgehammer workout, is history, if he has his way.

Dunkin said he had his eyes opened with the training methods employed by his guys Tim Bradley, and Nonito Donaire. "Those guys go to workout camps, and they work with the right people. Nonito's 114 1/2 pounds, and he's thicker than JuanMa at 126," the manager says.

Dunkin overheard Donaire while they were out at a steakhouse, after the weigh in to his last bout, a TKO8 win over Hernan Marquez on Saturday, conferring with notorious supplement expert Victor Conte.

Conte told him what to eat, in what order, and how long to chew each morsel. The degree into which Donaire bought in, and his level of stamina, got Dunkin thinking what Pavlik could be if he steered clear of the cheeseburgers and libations.

"Kelly is in 'You lit a fire in my a--, I want to do it' mode," the manager says. "And if he can do it, he'll destroy everyone. Guys like Chavez Jr, and Sergio Martinez will be destroyed. But we've got to be serious about it, and not be 192 pounds going in to camp. Kelly lost 12 pounds the day of the weigh in last time, riding a bike and using laxatives."

Dunkin will wait to see how things play out, if Pavlik can indeed yank himself out of the comfort zone. "It's time to grow up," he says. "I hope he can do it."

In his last outing (April 17), Pavlik ran out of steam against Sergio Martinez (UD12 loss), and then afterwards talked about how making 160, on his 6 2 1/2 frame, was too taxing. A jump to 168 was contemplated.

But Dunkin thinks the class of the training camp, and the class of the fighters' dedication, means more than the weight class. What say you, TSS U? Can Pavlik get more serious about his career, and regain his buzz at 160? Weigh in!

deepwater:  hopkins ruined pavlik. he really did.
Wednesday Jul 14, 2010 09:13:43 PM
riverside:  I doubt roach would allow this fight to happent now, Onces someone explains to Daddy, the consequenses of a beating at this stage of JR career might mean, Daddy or Roach will not allow it, it's like going from high school football to the NFL, Jr needs the college experience, and he might not make it to the NFL....IMO
Wednesday Jul 14, 2010 09:24:44 PM
Joe:  If Kelly P loses this fight to Jr. - Please ban him from boxing. KP should "abuse" little JCC.

Fisher:  Since there is no good Mayweather v Pacquiao article to comment on, I am going to use this space to vent my frustration towards Floyd. I have supported him when everyone else hated him, but if he doesn't man up by Friday night and sign the contract, I am going to be forced to join the legion of Pac-sheep who say he is scared of losing. Even though I think Floyd wins, I am wearing thin of his antics and am starting to think he doesn't believe he is as good as he really is.

deepwater:  arum and roach no pavlik is shot. no other way they would let this fight happen otherwise. arum knows pavlik is going downhill. he will invest pavlik's scalp to chavez jr new career

ali:  Pavlik is going to ko Chavez

mortcola@deepwater:  If Hopkins ruined Kelly, its only because he represented reality. There is someone slicker, smarter, tougher than you somewhere. But that's true for almost every fighter who has ever lived. If Kelly is ruined by it, its because he refuses to grow from the experience, and loses his belief in himself. Whatever his limitations, he's a very good fighter who can be great against many opponents. The sharpness and experience of progress he can experience from a state of the art camp might give him the edge to be all he can be. Kelly needs to make the most of being a straight ahead, no frills fighter. Make it work. That's who he is. If the head and the body are tuned right, that'll be enough to make another championship run of it.

The Bryguy:  The fact is everyone is going to think this is Arum's way of cashing in on Chavez Jr. When the reality is he is cashing in on Pavlik. Kelly is never going to go beyond what he is now, so why turn another one of your fighters into a star instead of watching Pavlick's decent?! Pavlik is a 1-2 straight ahead, can't fight backing up type fighter.

brownsugar:  I'm glad TSS was able to get this story... I almost couldn't believe my eyes ...I remember telling my friends that they don't want to miss Kelly vs Miranda several years ago... nobody ever heard of Kelly and barely heard of Miranda... at the time Kelly was virtually a secret to most fans... after the gritty win... where Kelly traded bombs with the Columbian KO artist he pretty much exploded on the scene. Since I live in "The Home Of The Marvelous Buckeyes"(less than 70 miles from Youngstown,.. we immediately adopted Kelly as one of our favorites.. My son in law who is from Youngstown told me about Kelly long before he became front page sports-news..Pavlik was the biggest attraction in the whole town... Pavlik seemed like the Sylvester Stallone character "Rocky"... a humble hardworking blue-color steel-town guy... who clawed his way to the top with grit and determination...What's not to love?...We rooted for him against the much more glamorous HBO Golden P4P Prospect Jermaine Taylor like it was Rocky Balboa vs Apollo Creed... and he came thru....we thought he would skyrocket to boxing superstardom...(he had the hopes of an entire city riding with him) and then they put him in with Bhop... and even extened invitations to Joe Calzaghe and Arthur Abrahms.. We thought Kelly would go all the way... Bhop was extremely tentative against Calzaghe ...who made Hopkins look like he had a phobia against fighting an honest twelve round fight and might possibly be unable to "Pull the Trigger" anymore......The Pavlik/Bhop fight was a strange night of boxing... Jack Loew came in with prison guard uniform...... I guess to remind Hopkins of his "Place".. but Bhop rose to the occasion to put on his "Last" great performance.... Kelly was never the same afterwards... being close to Youngstown and having sort an extended family there... I heard reports of Kelly drinking and getting into altercations... it wasn't all coming from the web ..... I hardly think Bhop beat him up so bad that Kelly suffered any neurological damage...he hurt him in a worse way... ..psychologically... after the fight was over....it was poor sportsmanship for Bhop...but he ran up on Pavlik... like he was ready to beat him again without the gloves... you could see real fear in Kelly's eyes that night... and there's nothing worse for a fighter than to have his fear exposed publically... it's hard to get over that kind of embarassment once you've been elevated in the publics eyes as the next Marvin Hagler of the middleweight division(yes ...Larry Merchant actually said that)... but I think Kelly can put things back in perspective....he does't have a choice if he's to continue boxing... it really wasn't a good sign when Larry Merchant said that Kelly had been spotted closing the bar at the Casino the very night before his title defense against Martinez... that's very disturbing behavior for a champion...and Arum is a very astute observer of the game.. he can smell potential.... greatness.... and the death of a stagnating career from miles away... personally I think Kelly could still beat JC after drinking half a dozen double-shots of Absolute Vodka... but if JC could get past Pavlik,.. even a used up Pavlik.. I'll have to come back and say good things about him... even though it would pain me very much to do so... we'll see if Arums latest matchmaking venture actually holds up in the weeks to come. If it really comes off.. it's a spectacle that I'll try hard not to miss...

brownsugar:  shoulda broke that up into chapters.....got carried away about our home town guy...
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 03:16:28 AM
Mexican Boxing Fan:  Kelly is too far gone and past his prime when he fought Taylor. Chavez Jr looks strong and better at 160. I believe that the younger Chavez will be too strong and with something to prove, will KO Pavlik. Furthermore, Pavlik is made for Chavez's style. Pavlik is stationary and is always open to the body. Now I am not saying this will be a cake-walk for Chavez, just the opposite, it will be a tough fight for as long as it lasts. But Chavez will win this one easy. Also, there are talks about Chavez fighting Cotto. Cotto is a smaller version of Pavlik and is also past his prime. Chavez would KO Cotto also. However, 3 years ago both Cotto and Pavlik would have won against Chavez.

DaveB:  Brownsugar, you did that so well. What you wrote was very interesting and not rambling at all. You're a very good writer. You didn't need to break that down into chapters.

jkc:  as much as I respect Kelly Pavlik, after reviewing the tapes of the Martinez fight and Duddy fight . I would never make this comment before 2 years ago but Chavez junior has a solid and excellent chance to win this fight. Kelly has one option and only one option his punching power and I am still not sure how hurt Chavez was in the sixth round from a Duddy right hand. Roach knows the game to well especially junior chavez speed and power game, but the question mark will be 2 thing's how much does Kelly have left and how hard a punch or manny punches can Junior, take. I promise yoy this if this fight goes into the tenth round Kelly will be in big trouble because youth rules and with junior"s new strength coach like it or not Junior will be packing much more aka Alex Ariza and Freedie Roach can find a fighter's weakness and the way kelly first 6 rounds against martinez and after the seventh round so calles knock-down Pavlik looked shot.
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 03:36:05 AM
brownsugar:  Thanks Dave...
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 03:53:47 AM
Isaiah:  Kelly Pavik isn't as shot as some might think. People, he might have looked bad and lost fair and square to Sergio Martinez, but Kelly is way better than anyone a bum like Chavez Jr. has ever faced. Undefeated doesn't mean jack and that especially to all you Mayweather fans. This is nothing but a confidence booster for Kelly. He's going to murder Julio with a brutal combination putting that "undefeated" bum down for the count in the middle rounds. The ghost is going to scare the middleweights again you all and then it's on to a Martinez rematch!
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 04:21:06 AM
riverside@brownsugar:  awesome writing, truth about everything you wrote, I follow Pavlik fight since he beat Bronco, and he was a huge underdog against Miranda, then came the wins against taylor which put him on top of the world, which he overlooked BHop, The Guy who lost to the guy he just beaten twice..after the Bhop/ Pavlik fight, ... Bhop jumpin in pavlik face and seeming to congatulate him, it seem all but that.. Bhop Scared him straight. getting back to JR, Pavlik is got too much for him..
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 05:08:50 AM
M4RK:  WTF man why Pavlik getting these fights WE WANNA SEE SERGIO MARTINEZ no one cares about KP.... MARTINEZ IS CHAMP and everyones ducking him - boxing's taking a reeal bad blow this year....
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 08:31:51 AM
Chuck Norris:  Hey, did you all know Floyd Mayweather would beat Kelly Pavlik? Just don't ask him to prove it. As a Mayweather fan, it's my job just to say how he "would" beat Kelly Pavlik, Sergio Martinez, Andre Berto, Paul Williams, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Maracheato and Manny Pacquiao on the same night. No need to prove it. Us A-Hole Mayweather fans also don't need to point out how Floyd OBVIOUSLY lost to Jose Luis Castillo and Oscar De La Hoya. Remember Floyd fans, those fights never happened and if someone tries to say differently, we'll just say, that Floyd automatically won all 12 rounds both times. No need to prove it. I hear Manny Pacquaio is willing to take the random blood tests. Shoot. That dude is making it hard to duck him. How dare he agree to the unreasonable demand and sign the contract first while I'm still waiting on my SISSY BOY. Floyd's the greatest of all time. He don't need to prove it with this legacy defining fight because legacy don't pay the bills even though this fight would be paying all kinds of bills. Nope. As a Mayweather fan, I can just assume Floyd would win. See, all you have to do is throw logic away. Yeah! Go Floyd! He's the mighty duck. He's DUCK KING. What a quack. Wait. Floyd can't sign the contract. It's Thursday. That's bad luck somehow. Wait. He needs a blue pen, I mean a red pen, I mean a black pen. Uh... He needs a 70/30 split. Wait. He needs blood testing inbetween rounds. Wait. Floyd demands a bone marrow, hair follicle, blood, urine, vision and hearing tests. We have to be fair about this.

jkc:  to the TSS blogger's, what people do not realize right away they go to the Duddy, Chavez junior fight there is the proof discounting John Duddy tremendous chin and will to win, no way Kelly Pavlik could stand up tp the punches Duddy took and fought back. If people think Duddy cuts they will need a plastic surgeon to patch up Kelly Pavlik after Chavez Junior lands bombs, to Kelly soft tissue around his eyes, and Pavlik what ever he was once worth is not the same. My sources tell me Pavlik was 172 10 days before the fight. Chavez was 169 8 days before the fight, Chavez lost the weight sparring 12 rounds, working the gloves 16 rounds skipping rope 45 minutes and speed work and strength work to put him chavez in tremendous shape at 160, Kelly the new ex-lax and exercise bike rider in a platic sweat suit took a different route to loose wait. Most TSS bloggers think junior Chavez does not have a chance, I am here to tell you he will be working with Freddie Roach 7 weeks straight before the fight and this kid listens and is silently hungry, in the Martinez fight Pavlik took much less punches than Duddy took against Junior.and Junior hits much harder than Martinez, especially Junior's uppercuts and crosses, pavlik only chance is that Junior does have the ability to not take punches but deep down I think this will be Pavlik last fight.
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 10:00:44 AM
brownsugar@riverside.:  thanks,....what's also interesting about Pavlik is that he single handedly revolutionized boxing....well....maybe that's too strong a word... but when he was looking like he might be good enough to make a run towards Carlos Monzon's win streak... (and again.... I exaggerate slightly) .....many 160lbs and up boxers began using Sledge Hammers as a daily part of their training regimen... Jermaine Taylor bought one after his loss to Pavlik... even Arthur Abrahms could be seen training with a sledge hammer to prepare for one of his fights... Kelly's early success is probably responsible for selling more sledge hammers since they built the first TransAtlantic RailRoad... for a while... to be seen swinging a sledge hammer at a monster-truck tire (or flipping the tire) in training was the ultimate symbol of a hard working and dedicated boxer... If Pavliks able to get his career back on track.. he and his entire team should emblazen the logo of a sledge hammer on thier entire wardrobe... Pavlik made the sledge hammer as popular as Ali made the axe,.. when he was filmed using one while he was preparing for Foreman....at least that will always be part of his legacy...
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 10:44:23 AM
ali:  Why do you Mayweather haters keep bringing his name into a article that has nothing to do with him....Damn!!!!! Just give it a rest and talk about Pavlik vs Chavez...Now Pavlik people are doing the right thing by puting him in the ring with Chavez....Why...Because Chavez is a straight ahead fighter with ok skills & power...Pavlik walks through those type of guys he only has problems with guys who move and use angles...I see him stoping Chavez in the mid to later rounds.

Matthew:  This is why fighters need to be more active, and why HBO has stunted the growth of fighters like Pavlik and Paul Williams. Does anyone else here also think that Williams has regressed in the last 12-18 months? I sure do. The problem is fighters wait around for the limited dates that HBO has, and then they only fight twice a year at most. This hurts their development as fighters, and it means they lose discipline in terms of gaining weight between fights. I hate to sound like a curmudgeon, but a fighter in his prime (like Pavlik and Williams are) should be fighting 4 to 5 times a year. Take one or two fights off TV, or on a smaller show just to stay sharp. I applaud Vic Darchinyan for doing that a few months back. Fighters who were more active in the past used training camp for implementing their fight plan, not for losing weight put on between fights. There is no reason Pavlik should not be able to make 160 if he is disciplined and fights more frequently. Like him or not, Bernard Hopkins never really struggled to make 160 (and he is 6'1'') because he took care of his body and didn't overindulge between fights, even when he started fighting less frequently.
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 03:23:43 PM
primetime@brownsugar:  just wanted to tell you that I always enjoy reading your comments. One thing... when BHOP went over to Kelly Pavlik after the fight, it was not bad sportsmanship....in fact...it is just the opposite. He was very respectful to KP.....He told KP not to let this fight get him down. He told Kelly that he was a great champion, and that he should learn from the loss. He said that the loss could either "make him or break him" , but not to get discouraged. Told him he needed to bounce a little more and get up on his toes. Both KP and his trainer were listening, and I remember wondering whether or not they would adopt BHOP's advice.........He didn't.
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 03:36:34 PM
deepwater@mortcola:  I tend to agree with you on this.pavlik should learn from it and stick to what works. the problem is hopkins made the blueprint to beat him down. pavlik was is a great puncher he just can't box that well. some fighters learn from a loss others are never the same. Pavlik woulda been better off getting knocked out by hopkins instead of being schooled like that. arum never makes a fight he can't win. pavlik will be sacrificed to chavez .
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 03:42:52 PM
Radam G:  The problem is that the ghost is now visible. He has been 175lbs to 200 since he's been 15 years old in the amateurs and then sweating down to 150 and some change to complete at middleweight. His body has grown, but his mind and thinking have not. It is time for him to get his mind and thinking off stand still, dump, slump and bump middleweight, super middlweight and light heavyweight and complete at cruiser, so that he can once again become a brusier. It's still The Ghost Time, not "Casper, The Friendly Ghost" at 160lbs, 168lbs, etc., etc,. but whuparse ghost. Kelly and Team Kelly ought to quit shuckin' and jivin' and get in the weight class where they belong. Everything must change and grow. The Honorable Congressman Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao cannot and could not fight junior lightweight or lightweight anymore, so he got the outta Dodge South weight and came up to Dodge North weight and he is still the fastest, baddest gun in town. Bobfather's biz is promoting, not training and not managing. Of course he will match Kelly Pavlik anywhere that Team Pavlik allow him to. Work with me, people! This is prizefighting, not pridefighting. Bobfather is going for that prize, not pride. Kelly should wake the fudge up and do the same -- move north in weight and get his ghosting, roasting and toasting arse on and get paid BIG for being a BIG ARSE in a bigger weight class. Holla!
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 05:19:59 PM
Radam G:  *anymore, so he got outta....
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 05:23:15 PM
The Saint:  Pavlik is obviously too big for 160. Why are today's fighters insistent on trying to make weight for a weightclass they don't belong in? It's a farce. It's cheating. You look at Pavlik and you know he could be a light heavyweight, but the guy wants to convince everyone that he's a middleweight, just like De La Hoya fooled the media into accepting him as a jr. lightweight when he could've easily been a jr. welterweight. These so called fighters only want to fight when they think they have an unfair advantage.
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 07:29:32 PM
Mike M:  Nice post Brownsugar. I think this is a great fight for Pavlik to get back on track and then rematching Martinez. I disagree with anyone who thinks Arum is trying to cash Pavlik out with this fight, similar arguments were made with Cotto against Foreman. Arum's top dogs are Cotto and Pavlik and these are the guys who he values and are his marquee talent. They both went through a gauntlet of warriors early on unlike Foreman and Chavez who have been carefully matched for the maximum value. Similar to Cotto, i feel Pavlik has several more top fights in him IF he trains with discipline and improves his diet. Pavlik needs to rededicate himself to this sport and bigger fights and titles are back in his reach easily. With Lebron leaving Cleveland, Pavlik has a golden opportunity to put Ohio back on the map and get some respect back for himself and Ohio. This fight will sell out in Texas and if they put a solid card together it would be good for boxing. Arum and Dunkin also have to at least reassess the trainer situation with Jack Loew. I don't have an opinion on this yet but it has to be considered whether he is the best trainer for Pavlik going forward. Classwise, there is no comparison particularly with the caliber of opponents they've faced. As good as Chavez looked against Duddy, Pavlik is a whole different animal. Pavlik has heavy hands, length, decent speed and better defense. Unless Chavez has a super chin, he is going to get messed up when Pavlik hits him with the kind of shots Duddy was able to hit him with. Chavez has improved with Roach and his new team, seems to be taking the sport more seriously and is coming off a high with a win over Duddy so the fight makes sense. Still, I can't see any way Chavez wins this fight if Pavlik, particularly if he can still make this weight comfortably without all the issues that occurred with the Martinez fight. Pavlik by KO 7.
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 07:41:01 PM
Mike M@Matthew:  I couldn't agree more. Unless you have to heal up for cuts, etc., there is no reason that fighters you mentioned are not fighting a minimum of 3 fights a year, particularly when they are in their prime. Hagler had 13 defenses in the four years following his title win (in 1980). That, plus his discipline, was a big part of him staying at 160 his whole career. An active champion is generally a champion who is always in good shape and near his target weight. Part of being a champion is discipline and you take a big risk blowing up between fights and then cramming the last few weeks to make weight. That stops working after a while and your body doesn't respond as well as you get older.
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 08:02:14 PM
deepwater:  pavlik has every advantage at 160. anything above that he is a regular joe. no punching power for him above 160. arum knows kelly is shot. arum would not hand over chavez unless he knew kelly was done.
Thursday Jul 15, 2010 08:17:04 PM
brownsugar@primetime:  thanks for the comments and it's true what you say... but before that Bhop lept at Pavlik as Kelly was moving in his direction to congratulate him... then he pushed Pavlik very menacingly and eyed him as though they were going to have it out again and dared him to do something about it....... but the advise that Bhop gave him was reasonably true...it seemed a little insulting as if he was talking to a child... its not the type of conversation that you would have publically if you were talking to someone you really cared about... he could have told him that in private or over the phone. Pavlik nodded in agreement but that was just to hurry Bhop along...
Friday Jul 16, 2010 05:54:20 AM
brownsugar@MikeM:  it seems like a carefully planned trap to get Kelly into the ring at 160.... like most of the guys are saying... but I read that Conte really helped Donaire immeasuably by advising him exactly what to eat,. when to eat...how long to chew.. and when to swallow... Donaire who was having trouble making 115 said Contes counsel was very helpful.. if you notice Donaire came into his last fight at 114 1/2 and looked very strong.. sharp and confident... ......liquor and cheeseburgers can turn a light heavy into a natural cruiserweight... but with the right nutritionalist... and a training camp outside of the depressing decaying town of Youngstown... Kelly might be able to be productive again... but I'm with you... I think even a 75% version of Kelly KO's JC anyday of the week.. while sipping martini's in his corner between rounds...however ....whether or not a nutritionalist can defeat natural genetics is yet to be seen...
Friday Jul 16, 2010 06:11:14 AM
Steve the hater:  Kelly still has a couple of good fights and this would be Chavez biggest test ,if he pass then look on fighting some class A fighters.
