KIMBALL'S RINGSIDE REPORT: Pacman Outclasses Clottey
By George Kimball
ARLINGTON, Texas --- Manny Pacquiao defended his WBO welterweight title with a runaway unanimous decision at sold-out Cowboys Stadium, but Joshua Clottey could take some solace in becoming the world’s best boxer’s first opponent in two years to hear the final bell, as well as the only Pacquiao foe weighing more than 130 pounds to go the distance.
Although he didn’t get much respect on the scorecards of the ringside judges, Clottey gained the admiration of the crowd as well as his opponent.
Pacquiao ran his record to 51-3-2 with the win. Asked afterward about a possible Paquiao meeting with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach replied, “It’s what the whole world wants to see.
“Just let the commission do its job,” said Roach of the drug-testing issue. “Just get in the ring and fight.”
Alfonso Gomez, who rose to prominence on ‘The Contender’ to become the boxer who retired that late Arturo Gatti, may have done the same favor for former world champion Jose Luis Castillo. After five rounds of a bout in which he had not been competitive, Castillo quit on his stool as his corner informed referee Kenny Bayless that he could not continue. Gomez is now 22-4-2, Castillo 60-10-1.
According to CompuBox stats, Gomez landed 92 punches to Castillo’s 47. The crowd of 50,994 was so worked up by Gomez-Castillo that they spend most of the fight between Humberto Soto and David Diaz attempting, with varying degrees of success, to perform The Wave.
Fighting with his back to the ropes, Soto caught Diaz with a solid left followed by a right to put him down in the first round, and then with ten seconds left in the fight, drove him to the canvas again like a man playing Whack-a-Mole. The Mexican rode those two knockdowns to a unanimous decision over former champion Diaz of Chicago in their bout for the vacant WBC title.
Both David Sutherland and Hubert Minn returned 117-109 scores for Soto, while Gale Van Hoy had it somewhat closer at 115-111. Soto in picking up a championship at his third different weight, is now 51-7-2. Diaz is now 35-3-1.
Although John Duddy had promised “fireworks” in his bout against Michael Medina, their bout quickly transformed itself into a technical battle in which Duddy was more boxer than brawler. After battling Medina on fairly even terms over the first half of the bout, Duddy began to assert himself over the next four, during which he repeatedly tattooed Medina. Although at this point the Mexican seemed to have had most of the fight beaten out of him, Duddy unaccountably took the final stanza off, apparently convinced that he could coast to victory. Only over the final few seconds, when Medina trapped Duddy in his own corner, did the two go toe-to-toe, and the Irishman very nearly got the worst of that when he was clocked by a roundhouse right literally seconds before the bell.
Duddy won by identical 95-93 scores on the cards of judges Mike Mitchell and Charles Phillips. (The SweetScience card favored Duddy by the same margin.) Arturo Velasquez' 96-93 score in Medina’s favor was particularly bewildering, since referee Robert Chapa had taken a point from the Mexican in the eighth round.
In other words, not only did Velasquez score only three rounds for Duddy (as opposed to the six of both of his colleagues), but in only one of those round was his score in accord with both Mitchell’s and Phillips’.
Duddy, in any case, improved his pro log to 29-1 with the victory, his third straight since last year’s upset loss to Billy Lyell. Medina is now 22-2-2.
Nineteen year-old Dallas 122-pounder Roberto Marroquin, a four-time US amateur champion and as fine a prospect as we’ve seen at this weight in nearly three decades, ran his professional mark to 13-0 and registered his 10th career stoppage when he dispatched another hometowner, Samuel Sanchez (4-2-1), at 1:36 of the second.
After knocking Sanchez down in the first round Marroquin had celebrated by kissing his right glove before the opponent had even landed. A hard chopping right in the second sent him barreling over backward. When Sanchez tried to get up only fall back over again, referee Kenny Bayless took him into protective custody, ruling the TKO.
Salvador Sanchez Jr., the nephew, and namesake -- and doppelganger -- of the late Mexican featherweight legend, improved to 19-3-2 with a sixth-round knockout of Texan Jaime Villa. Down once in the fifth and twice more in the sixth, Villa (8-8-2) failed to beat referee Neal Young’s ten-count after the last trip to the canvas and was counted out at 1:09 of the round.
Two earlier bouts involved a pair of Pacquiao’s Filipino countrymen. Junior bantamweight Eden Sonsona (19-5) scored an 8th-round kayo of former world title challenger Mauricio Pastrana (35-13-2). Floored by a straight left, Pastrana was counted out by Young at 1:33 of the round.
Featherweight Michael Farenas’ bout against San Antonio’s Joe Morales came to a premature conclusion when Morales was cut by a clash of heads in the second round, and the result declared no contest. Farenas remains 26-2-3, Morales 20-13.
In other action, California junior middle Rodrigo Garcia (6-0) scored a second-round TKO over Calvin Pitts (5-13-1) of Grand Prairie, Tex., while featherweights Isaac Hidalgo and Arthur Trevino battled to a majority draw in their four-round prelim. Although one judge, Mitchell, scored it a 40-36 shutout for Hidalgo, his card was overruled by the 38-38 tallies returned by Don Griffin and Valasquez. Hidalgo is now 6-5-2, Trevino 5-3-3.

clottey did well in spurts in this fight, he jus tneeded to multiply those about 10 fold to have a shot at winning a decision. it wasn't a case of pacquiao being too sharp, but too active. even several times clottey got in close quarters he would not unload even though he's a better inside fighter than pacquiao. maybe freddie roach got in his head when he said manny will stop himi who knows, but clottey did not come to fight to win, on the other hand props to manny for continuing to pepper clottey to get the points, but other than that wasn't much of a fight.

one thing manny did do that i hadn't seen him do before was throw well leveraged body shots, and use his jab better, so he is indeed still improving as a boxer.

Jim Lampley sounded lke he was going crazy in the second half of the fight. He wanted Clottey to fight back more than anyone on cocaine.haha. I bet a lot of people were irritated at the fact that Clottey was not trying to get knocked out tonight. He could have tried to win once he saw that he was able to hit Manny clearly but I guess Manny's speed just takes over every time

If you've ever set foot seriously in the ring, you learn a few things. First is, its harder to do it than it is to imagine yourself doing it, watching from the sofa. Second, you have a stance, a technique, things you know how to do better than others; some of them don't work, especially when the other guy is moving faster than your eyes can follow, and every time you blink, there's a sharp pain that takes your breath, or a crunching THWOMP to the face that momentarily scrambles your vision. Unless you're a single-minded Gatti, you don't just wing your punches regardless of what the other guy is doing. What Pac does is execute so fast, so accurately, from so many angles, and with so much sudden impact, that even a fine fighter just can't use his arsenal. And a disciplined fighter is going to find it very difficult to throw shots when his entire balance and timing are disrupted by speed and geometry he's never seen before. Clottey came to win. He just couldn't counterpunch a whirlwind, except on occasion when the winds slowed down for a moment. Doubters, Pac demonstrated that he is, perhaps, the greatest offensive machine we've ever seen, and with enough solid defense and intelligence (and chin and conditioning) to handle whatever he sees in the ring. It is what it is. That can be hard to accept.

WOW. THe punch stats. Pacquiao threw 1231 punches. He laned 246 which doesn't say much about his accuracy, but it's Clottey we're talking about here. Clotey threw only 399 punches and landed 108. That's a 27% connect rate, which is a testament to Pacquiao's underrated defense, particulary for an all out offense-minded fighter. 108 punches total is 9 punches per round landed by Clottey.

Not a big surprise about what happend...I was impressed with Pacquiaos punch output but Pac did get hit cleanly more then a couple of times and by nights end he looked the worse for wear. Clottey was just fightin' his style and the same thing would've happend to him if he had fought P-Will.

I know Manny is a good fighter, but Clottey might as well have e-mailed Manny this win! He could have sent this win via a Pigeon with a note attached, or hell Pony mail express! For those of you who question whethter Clottey came to win, the question is did he come just not to get knowcked out. It seems all ythat he cared about was blocking enough shots to stay on his feet. He would make the best designated driver...... because he doesn't take shots! But I'll be damned if he is ever my bartender.... cause he don't give any shots either! He could've fed everyone in Ghana if he would've won this fight.... hell, starvation it is. I couldn't pay to see him fight Glass Joe. I hope he doesn't end up on Fight Night Round 5 either! His stats would read: Defense 100...... everything else that has to do with offense..... zero. Horrible performance!

IT WAS AMAZING HOW PACQUIAO BROUGHT HIS SENSE OF HUMOR IN THIS FIGHT UNMINDFUL OF THE EXTRAVAGANCE OF THE VENUE AND THE PRESSURE OF HAVING TO FACE A HUGE GUY IN CLOTTEY. IT WAS WHEN HE SLIGHTLY TAPPED CLOTTEY WITH BOTH HANDS IN ROUND FOUR AS IF SAYING TO OPEN UP A BIT. EXTRAORDINARY OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE SKILLS DISPLAYED HERE. NICE WIN FOR MANNY.

As I thought, this fight was PURE GARBAGE, and those that were suckered to pay 50 bucks for this should wise up. I saw parts of it on free TV here in the Philippines and walked away after 3 rounds.
As long Vile Bob gets his $$$, he'll continue to mismatch his gold prize. Wise up fans, and demand a Floyd-Manny mega fight by boycotting this crap.

Who would of thought Clottey didn't came to win? Well, the first sentences of my prediction page were: "Is not a question of who's gonna win Is a question if whether Pacquiao can KO Clottey. That's the nature of this fight." That's how those two would square each other. Anyways, congratulations to Pacquiao on beatin' Joshua Clottey............................nothin' else to say. As frustrating as it was to see Clottey survive, Pacquiao did his best to make this as exciting as possible. He is a true "People's champ" as he tried for a ko in the later rounds while Clottey fought to survive. Pacquiao proved once again that he is clearly the best fighter pound for pound and one of the greats in the history of the sport. Winning is not enough for this man, he has a killer instinct and wants to win with an explanation mark each and every time. And he did just that. The only times he got hit is when he was trying to get Clottey to come out of his shell so that he could counter him and set him up for hard punches in the hopes of knocking him out. But what could he do against a man who was not willing to risk being koed? Bravo, Pacman, U have proved yourself worthy of fighter of decade!

Were there any surprises in this fight? No. It went exactly as many of us predicted: Manny connecting from every angle possible; Clottey, ever durable, absorbing punishment but not doing anything remotely close to actually win the fight, especially in the latter rounds, where he seemed happy with merely surviving. Simply stated, Manny broke the man down, he just didn't stop him. Clottey didn’t know what to do. That’s that. I’m assuming Floyd is not worried about what he saw last night. He’s not Clottey. He WILL, I repeat, he will, beat Shane come May. But the Money man should at least be concerned.

Clottey was in survival mode from the first second of round 1 until the final bell. That fight would cure an insomniac. Boring. Yawn. Zzzzzzz. It wasn't Pacquiao's fault. Clottey did his best Bernard Hopkins impression and forgot that you can't win a fight throwing 15 punches per round. The beauty of a Mosley-Pacquiao fight is the action we'd get. Shane would never pull a Joshua and try and do the Willie Pep and win rounds without throwing a single punch. This fight was effectively over in the 3rd round. The rest was superfluous and unnecessary. A thoroughly putrid performance from Clottey, who should be deeply ashamed of himself. It's time for him to retire.

This fight was set up by Bum Arum how can a man throw over a thousand punches and his opponent only throw three hundred in the biggest fight of his life. It was clear Pacroid was an easy target for Clottey and you can tell from how much Pacgirls face was busted up. Clottey took a million dollar dive so Bum Arum could keep Pacroid "looking good". But everyone knows Pacroid is an overrated fighter. Who's the next Top Rank fighter to take a dive to cement Pacroids 'legacy'? Margarito? Amir Khan? They will all take a few million to 'lose' to Pacroid. Smh Bum Arum is killing this sport.

Good move by Mayweather in sabotaging his deal with the Pacman. Mayweather could have been the one in that stadium being completely outclassed and embarrassed. Mayweather's body is not as durable as Clottey's, he will buckle and go down with those kind of body shots. Clottey's turtle defense is far better and hiding that chin than the shoulder roll, Mayweather will be wide open for the devastating KO punch. Mayweather should just bow out and retire. Manny Pacquaio's boxing is fluid and instinctive, he is a true Grand Master. Nobody can match Manny Pacquiao's level of boxing supremacy.

You make the salient point. Any other fighter would have cruised to victory after winning the first 7 or so rounds. Manny wanted to knock Clottey out !! But Clottey wanted to retain the only dignity he still had and refused to come out of the shell.... that a constant barrage of hard and fast punches put him and kept him in.

Hitting the heavy bag in gym always help you to hit a human one in the ring without getting frustrated. Frustration is an emotion that elite skilled fighters don't play. Clottey was trying to frustrate Pacquiao into fighting like Zab Judah, then BOOM! Lights out.

Blah blah blah... Pacquiao hit all gloves and elbows last night, Clottey snapped his head back with left uppercuts, right crosses.... pacquiao DIDN'T crack his defense, (his double punch indicates that), pacquiao DIDN'T hurt him, Pacquiao DIDN'T land cleanly on him, Clottey hurt Pacquiao, Pacquiao never hurt Clottey. Yes, Pacquiao won most rounds, I would give Clottey a few rounds, look at their faces after their fight? Clottey kicked his arse, but his lost the fight. I would say it was a moral victory for clottey, IMO, he made pacquiao look like sh***t. You guys need to get off his nutsack, Pacquiao got hit cleanly many times by a "walking heavy bag", I personally think it was genius that Clottey's defense beat Manny's offense, the rest of ya'll, if ya disagree, it's fine, but that's my opinion. I think I'm gonna blog now about why Clottey and Winky get no love, and why the shoulder roll and flashy combos win fights. It's not even about winning on points, b/c you have to score when you get points, it's just that if you have a shoulder roll, you make a guy miss 20 punches, you jab him once, yo'ure a defensive wizard, if you have shell defense, the hits your gloves 20 times, you connect with a straight right hand, you suddenly "don't want to win the fight" (mayweather vs. clottey). Or you're andre berto getting beat and you throw a few flashy combos on a glove in the last ten seconds suddenly you have "pop" and "hand speed that only comes around once a generatIon" and HBO gets down on your knees. Think about that, it's easy to jump on the bandwagon and wag your finger at clottey, i personally feel he fought brilliant, that he made pacquiao look amateurish, and pacquiao's bruised and beat up face told it all. Holler!

There isn't a panther that's any faster and tougher than Manny Pacquiao. I get thrills watching him work. It is a joy to be alive and to be a boxing fan in this era. Yeah, I'm gushing, but I'm allowed to the day after such an impressive victory. All the bright boys here on TSS can tell you why he won and why he's so great. I'm just going to lay back here in awe. Wow. I think it's safe to say that Mayweather was just scared, terribly scared all along and never gave a damn about any blood draws. What are you going to do, Floyd? Say what you will. Think what you may. but the truth is this is the same exact Clottey that almost beat Cotto and that had Margarito beat (until he hurt his hands) despite Margarito's ineffective work rate. He is always fighting tight and never throws any more than he has to. if he was excessively timid last night it was because he was afraid to let his hands go. And the only reason for that is that he knew he would get tagged and tagged again a la Oscar. In other words, one bigger man's ineptitude was the result of a naturally smaller man's superiority. Clottey was the same as always but made finally to look worse than anyone else has made him look before. He has not sustained any beatings. He had plenty of time to prepare. He had no weight restrictions. He simply lost to a better man than he has ever fought.

All you guys that criticize Pacquaio just get over it. The guy is a phenomenal fighter period. He fought Joshua "The Turtle" Ploddy who offered no type of real offense and he wouldn't come out of his shell. Pacquaio did the best to make a show out of it as he could. How do you fight someone who is so afraid to risk anything and hold his hands up to his face all night long? Sure Pacquaio gets hit, so does Mayweather. Pacquaio was tireless and that has nothing to do with juicing. I know some will never give him credit and will only see what their eyes allow them to see. When Ploddy did try to punch he got hit five fold for his troubles, so he said to himself that hurts I am going back into my shell because the risk isn't worth the reward. As usual Bill Major is right on.

You OK, Lee? Pac got hit cleanly a few times? Yeah - that kind of happens. You may have bought into the hype without realizing it....Pac is NOT one of the X-Men, or a god, and his defense is good, not great, which is more than made up for by his insane speed and variety of attack. Clottey's own cornerman stated that Clottey was inhibited from fear of Pac's power. As it is, he got hit less than most anyone Clottey has fought. He's an accurate, sneaky counterpuncher, and always has been. As it is, Pac absorbed no more shots than say, Duran did in an average fight, never slowed, never rocked even when tagged cleanly, and he outlanded him by a ridiculous number. He did land cleanly, VERY cleanly -typically after the first two or three in the combination hit gloves and elbows, which is reflected in his relatively low connect percentage. As it is, I think Clottey fought a good fight, the best he could under the circumstances, with his skill set, but that there is simply no way a guy with his repertoire of shots, so outgunned, is going to beat Pacquiao without knocking him out. That was a genius performance against a good one. Now repeat after me - Pac is mortal, Pac is mortal, in boxing you get hit, in boxing you get hit. But you're still my friend.

This was the worst Pacquiao fight I've ever seen. Gloryfide sparring session!!! This is an outrage and an insult to boxing. Can ANYBODY.......ANYBODY....in here tell me Clottey didn't take a dive!!! FIX!!!! Wasted my time.....I mean at least make it look halfway decent!!! The man wouldn't even punch!!! Then what was up with all the glove love at the end of each round....smiling and grinning......I mean get a room or something. This was a pathetic excuse for a fight, I'm glad I didn't pay for this an everybody I know who did is pissed!!! Jim Lampley had to overcompensate for the lack of action from JC. Every time Clottey punched he hit Manny flush and snapped his head back, then stop punches like OMG....I might hurt this guy and blow my envelope money. Straight right was there all night. Sad excuse for a prizefight. Dueces

Did Clottey decide to take his biggest payday and not try to win. I doubt it. I think he tried but backed off because he doesn't like to get countered fast and hard. Seems fair enough. Not many people invite punishment that they can't reciprocate. Now ask yourself the same question about JMM. When he signed for 4 million dollars, did he think he could go up two weight classes and really compete. Maybe. But in reality he just did his best and was still comfortably on his feet at the end..... and was frankly no better or worse for wear after losing to a much bigger Floyd than Clottey was in losing to Manny. I didn't hear you say that was dive. Or even a sacrifice, which is what it was! He sacrificed every advantage, his dignity an his record to get the biggest check of his life. Clottey fought exactly how he fought Cotto but he lost to a much, much better fighter. In the meantime, that's two elite welterweights for Manny in row. Deal with it, my brother.

That can be hard to accept."

for the people who are saying pacquiao is beyond criticism for his performance, you are wrong. for those who say clottey fought scared, you are also wrong. to me, clottey from the beginning got psyched out by freddie roach saying they'll make him quit. clottey already was suspect in his mental hardness to finish fights and push through difficult stretches. the truth is, manny still has yet to fight an elusive and slick style, clottey by his natural habit reduced himself to a walking punching bag by the way he behaved. i do not think he was so much afraid of manny's power in the ring as his power outside of it. from the very beginning it was obvious that clottey was getting thrown off by the scale of the fight, by the visa troubles of his trainer, and by roach's words. when clottey did open up and look for offense he was able to find it more successfully than manny even though manny had many more opportunities. compubox is unreliable and doens't tell you the effectiveness of the blows. the people who say manny could not have done anything else in the fight sound worse than the people who side with carl froch in the andre dirrell fight. if you don't like the other guy running, cut off the ring. if you don't like the other guy just covering up and not throwing back, don't just wail at his arms. pacquiao is a phenomenal fighter and his improvement in power, leverage, and accuracy should be commended, but how is he acting different from floyd in their head to head negotiations? he ffeels mentally off giving blood? wouldn'tn the floyd haters say more thana nyone that floyd feels weird having a smaller ring? or letting pacquiao wear the gloves he wants? or with the nickname "money" agreeing to 10 mil with each pound overweight? now all of a sudden we're supposed to TRUST the athletic commissions? floyd was the guy who ran away when bob arum was the one saying all along that the fight was dead before anything even was concluded? again, folks, stop acting like it's two boys in a schoolyard fight with nothing but pride on the line. they're far from the only ones controlling the outcome of fight making, and the reasons either quit is for much mroe than just being scared or whatever. i guess i ranted, oh well. nobody should be above criticism and scrutiny in this game, including pacquiao, i dont' care how much he prays in the corner and how well he doesn't sing at karaokes.

@Easter. Really? Clottey took a dive?! Are you really so pathetic to use that excuse?! Oh wait! I forgot who I was responding to! Yes, Clottey landed a few solid shots on Pacquiao, but Pacquiao won fair and square. Dive? Dive my foot! Who in there right mind would go all 12 rounds with a man like Manny when they were told to take a dive?! At best, if I was going to purposely lose, I would make it into the later rounds and make the fight a little closer if I could before I laid down on the mat. Clottey got outclassed from bell to bell. Let me write a "future" excuse for you. Hmmm... Yes, I can see it now. Mayweather will take a dive against Mosley. It HAS to be because Floyd will beat anybody so must have took a dive against Mosley when he loses coming up here. Someone should let you back into that padded room you left. It's past your curfew. The only dive that happened was the dive your hopes took when Pacquiao unleashed hell once again.

My god where to begin? .... Clottey fought this fight exactly how he has fought his other major fights . . . . He is a very impressive defensive fighter who works off the counter-punch . . . It seems some of us don't even know what a counterpunch is . . . . So why would he change his style and strategy against PacMan of all fighters ? If he had opened up more, he would have been knocked cold which appears to be what some had paid to see (try UFC fight next time) . Clottey did not look so bad as PacMan looked so great & he seems only to be getting smarter, more versatile, & more accurate under Roache....Also, I am so disgusted w/Harold Letterman that I need to mute literally everything this jackass says. To say that Clottey fought "scared" only shows how ignorant & senile he has become.... Please stick him in a home asap

Pacquiao landed much more legal punches than what he got credit for. Punches that landed on the right side and left of Clottey's chest and neck and under the pits of his arms should have been counted. A Legal punch is any punch that lands on any part of the front or the side of the face, neck and body, including the ears, jaws, sides of the neck, front part of the chest all the way up to the top of the temples and forehead, under the armpits, the stomach and ribs. If it wasn't for HBO politics, the seasoned punch counters would been in place and awarded Pacquiao more like 530 odd scoring punches out of 1,231 thrown ones.

Mosley-Pacquiao NOW :

Pacquiao did what he had to do with an inferior foe that while big, was a lumbering, stumbling, slow, deliberate, raw brute that couldn't hit water from the side of a boat. Many of us would love to see Mosley-Pacquiao for all the marbles. Shane will stand in there and fight, not assume a defensive posture and never throw a punch. That's the megafight. Mosley-Pacquiao. There's still a great chance that Floyd won't step foot in the ring with Shane, so it could happen.

Dive. Clottey can beat Pac if he didn't work for Bum Arum but you know Clottey has to obey his boss if he ever wants to fight Margarito, Khan, or any other fight Top Rank can set up for him. It's a shame but whatever. Floyd don't need the money so he'll never take a dive and that's why Bum Arum won't let Pacroid step in the ring with him. Arum is trying everything in his power to prevent Mayweather from smashing Pacroid. Peace.

It's pretty sad to see people criticize a man who risks everything for his fans and the sport. He doesn't force you to watch him entertain his loyal fans. And still you have negativity to say when he does everything in his power to make it a fight. The man could've just cruise to a victory after the sixth round but he still tried to make it a fight. He's a risk taker who doesn't think of himself unlike other boxers. Shame on you for being affilliated to this sport, go back to where you came from because there's no room for losers like you in here.

how could anyone give rounds 1 & 2 to manny? Clottey hit him with accurate shots vs. gloves and elbows. Sigh. I feel everyone likes flash and athleticism vs. real tough shots. I could go second by second every hard shot clottey landed vs. every hard shot pacquiao landed cleanly (could count that on one hand). Holler! The only thing impressive about pacquiao was his sense of humor with the "double punch" b/c he knew he couldn't hurt nor land on Clottey. In other words: "Bang bang bang!" Roach was over confident with his prediction and his fighter's abilities. So much for legendary sparring sessions when Manny "Bruised Face" Pacquiao got beat up but outpointed Clottey. Holler!

Judging by all the Pacroid vs Mosley comments even Pactards are scared to let their man fight Mayweather lol. You see Clottey was never hurt in the fight while Pacroid was all bruised in the face. Just imagine Floyds defence compared to Clotteys and Floyd is a much more accurate puncher too. You Pactards know this better than anybody. If anyone has mastered the sweet science of hit and not get hit it's 'Floyd Money'. Pacroid is good at hitting but it's the not get hit part that escapes his fight game. So we'll see who's who if Pacroid ever grows a set of b@11s and steps in the ring with FMM.

All you guys saying dive really make me laugh. It was like when Tyson lost to Buster Douglas and people were saying Tyson took a dive because no one wanted to watch his fights anymore because he was blasting out people in 90 seconds and people were tired of watching his fights. If Pacquaio didn't wail away at his arms when that was all that was available from Ploddy, what else could he have done? It's not that he hits as hard as Marciano and could blast his arms down. Mister Lee I know you still like Pacquaio. It's all right to admit it.

Clottey landed in the low-30's percentage wise. Not bad. Ordinary. About what Duran's opponents landed, if we could go back in time. I think all you novices ought to watch the classics of Duran, Arguello, Pryor, even Armstrong, Leonard, Pep - people GET HIT IN BOXING! Clottey had an element of success - a decent, par for the course connect rate. All it proves is that Pac can get hit. Like every other fighter who has ever gotten in the ring. Less than most of the people Clottey has fought. And, go back and watch to see how effectively Pac threaded the needle between those gloves as the fight wore on. Before and during those later rounds, he landed plenty around the gloves, heavy body shots, and arms and gloves in between. Which, if you know s--t about boxing, can be partially effective even if not scored, because those shots still thud into the recipients head, keep him catching instead of throwing, and obscures vision while setting up for the shots that get through. All gloves? Not by a mile. Learn about boxing, kiddies.

@ dp69, take care brother! You help to keep this forum interesting and fun. There are too many "blah blah"'s on the forum as it is. The saint, mortcola, and frank z will tap away in your absence. Fo' sho! @ Clone, haha, well you already know what the "status quo" is. Obviously my posts have some truth, but to call me a nut is ignorant. If you want the status quo, read every other post. Don't hate, appreciate. At least I'm giving a different perspective, and not all in on the pac love/nut hugging. Pac looked average, and hit gloves, that's my opinion. The partial hitting crap means nothing, cotto trapped clottey in the corner for 2 rounds with many "partial hits' due to his sprained knee, what happened? Clottey just shook his head and kept coming forward. @ Dave B, i appreciate pacquiao as a fighter and what he does for boxer, but i'm not a pac fan. And i feel he looked average in this fight, and his bruised face shows who really got the beating. I clottey employed a shoulder roll instead of a peek-a-boo.... he'd be a defensive wizard, not "fighting scared". In my book, blocked shots are the same as missed shots: empty and not worthy of points. If this were a volume contest, they should just shadow box and see who racks up the most punches per round, kind of like a martinez williams fight, volume means nothing without connects, and i maintain partial connects, compared to full connects (Clottey did have the "best punch of the fight" around round 5) are nothing. Clottey was never staggered or hurt. Give him some credit and some props. I dunno why the boxing world is so anti clottey. First he kicks Cotto's arse, and he boxes well IMO agst the best p4p fighter, and all i hear is nag nag nag, clottey shoulda done this, should done that, he's one of a kind, at least note a few things: 1.) he didn't allow pacquiao to land nor hurt im 2.) that he was fast and peppy enough to counter and hit pacquiao with clean left hooks, uppercuts, right crosses, and body shots 3.) That pacquiao had the bruised face, and clottey had the more eye catching shots. Don't be so biased that you can't see clottey's merits. Holler!

The only thing i would agree on is that clottey would have to do something and THEN some to win a pacquiao fight, b/c like the cotto fight, the cards are stacked agst him, he wasn't the bigger draw, he needed a Knockout or a clear cut decision to win, and he didn't do it, but i still maintain clottey fought well. Holler! Take care.

There will always be a few people that refuse to live in reality and even if something is played right out in front of them, it's easier to just come up with an irrational excuse then face reality. Yes, Manny Pacquiao can be hit. He is a human being, not actually SuperMan. Clottey is a good and skillful welterweight in this and any other era. Clottey would give any welterweight today all they could handle. A man who gave a pre Mosley Antonio Margartio and a 1 loss Miguel Cotto all they could handle and a man with wins over Diego Coralles and Zab Judah is no bum. Anyone that was stating Clottey as a bum doesn't know boxing. So, that logic is invalid. Point #2. Clottey threw the fight? I can't think of a man alive that would be told to throw a fight against a really fast, hard hitting and skillful guy like Pacquiao, but go the whole 12 rounds and not offer up some more resistance then what Clottey offered. If I was in charge and wanted Clottey to throw the fight, I would have him make it look good to the middle or late rounds and then fall and stay down. Isn't that really what taking a dive is? Add it up. Clottey was simply outclassed. Now, Floyd Money Mayweather or as I like to think FMM stands for, Fraud Maggot Moochweather, is a legit threat against Pacquiao and a few crazies might still think it's the Pacman avoiding HIM. Really? If the thought process of Floyd really is, "Hey! I can beat Pacman no matter what he does!" Then, now follow me on this one... Wouldn't YOU drop the random blood test demands and straight up whoop him in the ring and then have the commission test him right after the fight to expose him if he's a steroid user? I'm serious Floyd fans! If your guy is SO bad, why not whoop Manny's @$$ inside the ring and then expose him right afterwards and still be able to collect that fat money?! If I'm confident, I'd get in there with the same boxing rules there's always been and then expose Manny in BOTH ways on the same night! If you say, well Mayweather wants to clean up the sport, then wouldn't YOU take this up with the commission instead of just talking about imposing your own custom way? Wouldn't that be the way someone who's interested in cleaning up the sport would act? I think deep down inside, some of you all are not liking Floyd's chances against Pacquiao. Remember Floyd fans, it was YOUR guy that said he'd beat Pacman EASY, steroids or no steroids. That's basically a straight up direct quote from the Floyd man himself. It's real simple Floyd fans. Fight Manny with the CURRENT rules now or if he's soooooo interested with cleaning up boxing, then take up with the commission. There you go! It's that simple! Who's REALLY the fraud here? Here's a hint. It isnt' Manny! LOL!

@misterlee... Try watching some interviews of Clottey at his locker room after the fight even though his skin is black it can't hide the fact that it’s swelling especially at the nose part. Clottey couldn’t get off because Pacman didn’t gave him opportunity it’s either blocked or get hit while hitting back and Clottey chose to blocked. Clottey lose to Pacman by a wide margin even if they didn’t count the punches that Pacman throw at the gloves, arms and shoulder of Clottey so his guard would drop off still some penetrated through and that shows that Pacman can penetrate a peek a boo style defense. No one could limit Clottey being on defense for whole 12 rounds even with Cotto, Clottey got offensive rounds. Clottey didn’t even defend with the intention of winning, he defends not to get hurt and get knock out.

Mister Lee, I'm quite surprised by what U have written about how U perceived the fight. When I read your posts, even tho I might disagree, they have a certain intelligence. These posts on this article have amazed me. It seems like u wanted to take the other side for the sake of taking the other side. To which u write something to the affect of having a different perspective. But it has to be based on facts and at least some common sense. Clottey himself said this was the first fight he really lost. How U managed to see it different is beyond me. Like I said I usually respect your take on issues. This one has me baffled. Is it just to try to stand out and be different? Or is it to see what kinda negative response u can get from others? And those believing that Pacquiao dominated actually have cause to believe that. It was, in fact, as the judges had it 12 - 0 in rounds. Or, if u like, 12 - 1. Some of those body shots, in combinations of three and four, seemed very hard. In round 8 or 9, Clottey was kicking into air to shake off the stiffness in his leg. U can see it in the replay of the fight. This is during the round. His legs must have been tightening up from the body shots. I take nothing away from Clottey. I have respect for him as a boxer. That is why he has the record he has... against credible opponents. It was just that Pacquiao dominated him with his speed. Speed in boxing is an amazing weapon. Nothing can combat that. U remember a guy named Sugar Ray Leonard? ODH in his prime. And now Pacquiao and Floyd. That is why they dominate fights. Speed. Why not give credit to a man who, when he was far, far ahead on the scorecards, went for broke and still tried to stand toe to toe against a bigger man? If there was anyone else in there against Clottey and had an 8 round lead going into the 9th, he would have taken his foot off the pedal, yet Pacquiao tried even more so to engage in a stand-off. This is why many of us regard him as a true champ; his heart and willingness to fight with every ounce of blood that pumps in that heart.

I do have a bad temper (not violent, but bad) i like to hide, but yeah, i'm straight pissed that as clottey fan, clottey gets hated on so much, esp. since i felt he beat cotto, and not a single article on the TSS nor any other publication COMMENDING clottey for beating up cotto, or for doing decent agst pacquiao . Everyone seems to focus on what clottey didn't do, or isn't, and the fact that pac fans are hating on clottey, and hailing pac when his face shows he got beat up. THat'smy thing, i'ma loyal fan to boxers, win or lose, i don't jump on the bandwagon just b/c manny or anyone is hot. This is boxing, people do get hit. If you don't get hit it means you ain't doing sh*t. Pacquaio gets hit because when you throw a punch it leaves an opening. Ploddy doesn't get hit much because he is basically defensive minded and a counter puncher. When he has on ear muffs all night long he will not get hit often. Think of how many times Pacquaio would get hit if he was defensive minded, wore ear muffs, and only threw 400 stinking punches over the course of a 12 round fight. Ploddy is boring and takes defense to new levels like all defensive minded mainly fighters or safety first fighters. Of course people want to protect themselves but it is the taking it into the stratosphere that fans don't like. People say they are not going to kill themselves for the fans and I do agree with that to a point. But don't call people haters when they don't get excited about seeing certain fighters fight and don't call people nuthuggers because accolades go to the fighter that puts on a good show. It takes two to tango and one to say no. That is why Ploddy has never really been on the big stage until recently and hasn't made the curtain call even though people were always saying how tough a fighter he was. The boxing public isn't stupid. There will always be boxers who will have good records and are good fighters but they are not the ones the public wants to see for whatever reasons, usually they are not exciting and you cannot force a bad set of goods on anybody. Maybe he did the best he could but to me IMO it didn't look like he did but I wasn't the one in there. Last night he shouldn't have been either. Don hurry back bro, miss you.

@MisterLee, so you think that Pacquiao was the one that got beaten last night? Clottey must be spitting blood right now from all those body shots. Remember in the corner that Clottey's nose was bleeding. If you've been around boxing as long as I have you'll notice that black fighters don't bruise easily(that's a compliment lol). I've never seen Clottey bruised in all of his fights so it don't mean nothing. Pacquiao is like the Michael Jordan, Jerry Rice, LeBron, Jim Brown, OJ, etc...in a sport that has lacked attention from the globe for many years. I'm won't be surprised if Pacquiao will start to crossover to our local commercials.

Gotta agree with what this Mr. Lee cat is saying. I had Clottey winning the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 8th, 9th, and 12th rounds, and scored it 114-114, a draw. Pacquiao hit gloves or missed virtually all night. Clottey landed the heavier, more telling blows. Just look at Pacquiao's mug. This fight reminded me a whole lot of Hopkins-Calzaghe. Calzaghe threw more punches, all powder puffs that Hopkins smiled at, and they gave the decision to Joe just because he was slapping at Hopkins (and never hurt him or even remotely got Bernard's attention). This was the same thing all over again. But I had it a draw and would have liked to see Clottey land just a shot or two more in the 11th and he wins the fight.

What fight were you watching??? Or what sparring session. This was the worst joke of a prizefight that I can remember an I'm really straining my brain over here. We aint talking about nothing but this grand larceny committed by Bob Arum. Clottey would've killed Manny. He couldn't hurt Clottey...@ all. He hit him with everything and didn't budge him. Clottey had his lowest punch output ever, but whenever he punched he couldn't miss Manny. Had the reach but didn't jab, everytime he punched he moved Manny. I can't beleive you sitting up here trying to defend this JOKE we just witnessed. Clottey got some DIVE MONEY!!! I've watched plenty of Clottey fights. He did nothing for 6 rounds!!! I'm pissed....an I didn't even buy the fight. This fight was a BUST!!! Dueces

Can we assume that you also witnessed John Kerry running for cover and leaving his men exposed to enemy fire on the Mekong as well. What fight were you looking at? Pacquiao hit whatever was available, stepped to the side and turned Clottey and banged him hard again in every round. Yes he took some shots. Clottey can fight. But he lost by a country mile. And deserved to. Only a blind man or a hater can deny what Clottey's corner saw and said itself. "You're losing every round. Do something!"

Don't be mad at Arum or Manny. Both made the best fight possible when Shane and Berto were already signed for January and Floyd was looking for an excuse not to fight. Clottey almost beat Arum's other cash cow last June and his other Mexican star Margarito before that. Both were solid fights and I didn't hear any complaints then. Your logic is as bad as your attempt to discredit Pacquiao is transparent.

Clottey got some extra bread from Arum to make sure the cash cow didn't get damaaged. Arum just put Manny in their with one of the dangerous Welterweights and you can sit there like an idiot agreeing that it was rigged even though you didn't watch it. If you'd watch the whole entire fight you'll see that Clottey was not mentally ready for this fight. He looked so nervous in the dressing room I knew he wasn't ready mentally. I'm enjoying them flailing and wailing as their specious and often ridiculous conspiracy theories undermine not only their argument but their overall credibility. You all know me well enough to believe me when I tell you that I read multiple newspapers daily and as many boxing blogs. The number of sources supporting their position is less than the number of readers here that agree with them. The five TSS readers that refuse to give Manny his props can find solace on a site dedicated to the one they love. The URL is forbidden here but the site is named for the man himself: Floydmayweather

I understand U r upset about Clottey vs Cotto. That was a close fight. And it could have gone either way. In this sport, sometimes the man that steps on the pedal when at that crucial point gets the gift. U have to admit, Cotto stepped on the pedal in the last two rounds and Clottey took his foot off the pedal. I have no idea why. I was screaming my lungs off, begging for Clottey to take the fight to Cotto. If u look at great fighters in the history of this sport, they always let it all hang in those crucial moments. Clottey does lack that spirit. I will not deny that he's a solid fighter, but fights are won by throwing punches. Especially when a fighter (like Clottey) has a good defense. The next necessary step is a good offense. But seriously man, u can't be that upset about what happened between Clottey vs Cotto and take that out on Pacquiao. To say that you think Clottey put up a good showing undermines all the other comments you make. People look at u as being confused 'cause u see one fight so obviously wrong, when in actual fact u see other fights right. See what I mean? U and only a couple others seemed to have seen a different fight than the rest of the world.

Some people have a block with seeing greatness. That's what makes this world such a beautiful place; everyone's different pov. And that very thing is what makes this world a confused place. I cannot fathom how people cannot see how great Pacquiao is. Ever since he beat Barrera -- who used to be one of my favorite fighters -- i recognized greatness in Pacquiao, but others need a longer time to adjust. It will not be this fight against Clottey, but the next fight that people will see the truth. U r just ahead of others in knowing the truth.

What you drunk or something??? Read my comments again an understand what I'm saying. I never said one bad thing about Pacquiao idiot. I'm talking about the team behind him who RIGGED this fight. Call it what you want, I know what I saw. The man was never hurt by Pac's punches, wouldn't punch back, had every opportunity to and didn't. I know Clottey's style, he's a counterpuncher who uses the jab and sometimes waits for you to finish punching then apply's the pressure with punches while you are reseting. He jabs from the outside, hooks from the outside. Oh I get it...Pac hits too hard right. He can counter Margo, Cotto...but not Pac cuz Pac hits too hard. Spare me..... @ mortcola...I've been in the ring, I'm going today to get my rounds....so don't assume I'm talking out my neck over here. I said Pacquiao's hands are fast as S#!T when watching the fight....I was impressed......but he couldn't hurt Clottey and Clottey could've did Damage because his style was giving Manny problems every 10 seconds of the rounds he used it. Bob Arum pulls strings and Clottey got that envelope money. Look @ Arum sitting at ringside....like he was listening to Bob Marley(don't worry...about a thing) with that smirk on his face. Freddie Roach wasn't worried @ all. That man Clottey's punch output was 20 punches lower than his average. He walked around the ring for all of 2:45 of most rounds. It aint just me...EVERYBODY I talked to says the same thing.....the fight was some bullshyt.......RIGGED. Now for those of you who have trouble comprehending........I'm not criticizing Pacquiao AT ALL!!!! COMPRENDE !!!! Like I said b4 the fight, Clottey aint coming to win...I new that. What irked me is he aint even make it look half way convincing. Now what's irking me is the fact that so many up in here act like they didn't watch the same fight I watched. Holla Back!!!

@Real Talk: You "ain't criticizing Pacquiao at all." LOL. Right. You just want to take credit away from him for doing something that Mayweather in his wildest dreams doesn't have the skillset to do. If I were Clottey I would've exposed my invincible chin to take a full punch from Pacquiao and drop like a sack of potatoes to convince everybody. I would've even twitched a few times on the canvas the way Apollo Creed did against Ivan Drago. Just because your girl Floyd can't do it, it don't mean the greatest fighter of generation, Pacquiao, can't. Get over it. I can't wait to hear your excuses after Pac sodomizes Mayweather in the ring. Let's all just agree to disagree. I never forced my idea or interpretation on others, I never said that pacquiao didn't win the fight. Though I am over the Cotto fight, I bring it up to note similarities (being underdog and being on someone else's home turf with advantages of promoters, judges, commentators, fans etc.). I commend and thank the pple who do give clottey credit being who he is and what he is. However, it's just the circle of life, everyone or someone's always going to disagree with you, I don't need other pple to agree with me nor do I write to conform to that. I have my personal feelings, and I feel no need for pple to be threatened by it nor horrified. I never took away pacquiao's past achievements nor have i ever said he "wasn't great" etc. My opinion is my own, I don't need to manufacture it so it conforms with others, others may enjoy theirs as they choose just as i do. Not that I agree but I'll settle for the middle ground. Roach, Arum and Manny all knew that Manny could outwork and outpoint Clottey under almost any circumstances and that factored into taking the fight. And Floyd Mayweather knew when he signed the contract with Featherweight king JMM at a catchweight of 144 and then paid to come into the ring at 146 that he could control and dominate Marquez no matter what. I'm not calling anything a fix because I don't make those kinds of accusations. But I am willing to acknowledge that Manny's team made a calculation that Clottey was beatable ... as long as you are willing to make the same concession. That's as far as I'm willing to go.

You don't have to get the medical records, which are private and none of your business. Did you ever hear of HIPPA? Just go to Youtube and listen. Ali and Leonard used novocaine for their bad hands. Louis used cocaine to help him relax from the names that he was called by white fans. In later life, he became addicted. Chavez used beer, cocaine and marijuana. Duran used a Panamian stimulants to help him come down in weight. Sugar Ray Robinson used doping with cow and goat blood and marijuana. Until the commissions started issuing water for the corners, some boxers had beer, wine and all other types of stimulants and PEDs in their bottles that they were drinking between rounds. The game has changed a lot. Todays fighters are more clean than ever.

You are the first one to have met my TSS Challenge. I asked for evidence of boxing's past and present purity and/or the lack thereof. Anyone that has been on this planet (literally) long enough knows that athletes in the past in every sport used 'enhancers', pain-killers etc that were both legal and illegal by law and within their sport. Accusing any one man without evidence requires that the accuser bear the burden of proof. I extend that burden to those that accuse just Manny Pacquiao. to have an credibility with me, they need to meet mine (actually Thomas Hauser's) challenge. Show me the evidence.

Thomas Hauser has asked that boxers, including Oscar Delahoya, sign the release forms. Once Oscar sign that form, all of his fans will be shock that he is a hypocrite and one of the greatest users of PEDs. The sports is cleaner today. But has a long history of PEDs usage from even the greatest boxers, especially including Floyd Mayweather, Jr and Sr, Roger Mayweather and Jeff Mayweather. Just go and listen to some of the interviews on Youtube or read the well written books by Bert Sugar, Thomas Hauser and the boxers and suppliers of the PEDs themselves. I got some horse to rope, so I'm signing off.

I saw something in Manny's face as well that I haven't seen in a while but I don't think it was fear. It looked more like exhaustion ... or maybe fear of getting exhausted. Frustration is probably more accurate. If roach is to be believed (and I think he is), their strategy was to hit Clottey and back off and wait for him to return fire and thus open up. Well, surprise, surprise! Clottey didn't fall for it. So maybe the expression we saw a mixture of frustration, exhaustion and surprise. Or as Yogi might say: He was just Flustrated.

@RealTalk, Like I said, if Manny didn't hurt Clottey how in the hell is his nose started to bleed? Or why is his right cheek bruised up? Marg and Cotto don't throw 6-8 punch combo, Marg and Cotto don't have the footwork, lateral movements, and ability to hit and dodge a punch. Clottey caught him with some good counters but Manny answered back with punches of his own not one, not two, 3, 4, 5, 6, but 7 punch combos. Or he either smothered himself on Clottey so he couldn't get off. Seriously foo you need to watch that fight again to really understand how Manny manhandle Clottey. Cotto was able to fight off Clottey so you're saying Manny who throws 3 times more can't do the same. You're a joke like the Mayweathers for real.
