For Some, Pacquiao Is In A No Win Spot Tonight
By Frank Lotierzo
Imagine being the marquee attraction in your profession, and the better you perform, the more some of your competitors and peers will tarnish your body of work and accomplishments. On the other hand if you only look good, and not spectacular, it'll be said in some corners and factions that it was because you didn't cheat or circumvent the rules this time. In other words if Joshua Clottey upsets Manny Pacquiao tonight, it'll be inferred by some that Pacquiao was clean of PEDs instead of heaping the due praise on Clottey for finally stepping up and fighting to his true potential.
That's the conundrum Manny Pacquiao 50-3-2 (38) is in tonight heading into his WBO welterweight title defense with Joshua Clottey 35-3 (20). What will really work against him in the eyes of some is if he has a terrific showing and perhaps even stops Clottey. It'll be thought of as being too much of an overwhelming performance and almost incomprehensible. And that's because almost every fight observer who knows what they're watching is in agreement that Clottey has a cast-iron chin and is also very durable and physically strong.
What surprised most fans and writers as they observed the early rounds of the Pacquiao-Cotto bout was how Cotto was hurt with the first couple left crosses that Pacquiao got through with cleanly. From that moment on Miguel immediately sensed that it was safer to punch before and after Pacquiao -- and at all cost not to get caught in exchanges or punching with him. That literally had many of those watching the fight astonished after it was said repeatedly how Cotto was the supposed stronger fighter physically. Especially since the question before the fight was more of how Manny would hold up under Cotto's assault than the opposite.
Joshua Clottey is known for being extremely durable and in fights against Antonio Margarito, Zab Judah and Miguel Cotto he seldom changed his facial expression after sampling the best they had to offer over 33 rounds. What if Pacquiao comes out and after catching Clottey with a couple of the Sunday left-crosses that he did Cotto, Clottey is holding on and fighting to survive instead of fighting to win after the third or fourth round? No doubt most watching will be shocked and dismayed by seeing Clottey bothered by his opponents assault for the first time in his career.
Obviously there will be a faction watching who will say he's gotta be doing some kind of PED's and they'll immediately dismiss his explosive and shocking power as simply being manufactured. And by the way, if it ever comes out down the road that PEDs were the source of Pacquiao's strength and power - not only was he a cheater, he also had the best dealer and supplier in the history of sports. Because there's certainly no other Robo-fighter in amateur or professional boxing.
So there is a down side if Pacquiao scores a spectacular win over Clottey.
Conversely, if Pacquiao has life and death and labors to a narrow decision win, we'll hear how he finally faced an upper-tier welterweight who wasn't old and washed up nor was he compromised by having to suck down to 145 in order to make the fight.
Pacquiao's overwhelming victories in his last two bouts against Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto has set the bar of expectation very tonight against Clottey. If Pacquiao goes through Clottey, it'll be too much for some to handle and it'll be easier for them to live in their little cocoon rationalizing to themselves that he's getting over and cheating in one form or another. That, or they'll say Clottey wasn't any good, which is downright ignorant, and that's what they expected to happen, as opposed to accepting that Pacquiao can really fight.
On the other hand if Pacquiao struggles, some will assume he was clean for this fight and finally fought a real welterweight in his prime. Regardless of how Pacquiao performs against Clottey tonight, he'll be damned either way for looking too good or just getting by. He's in a no win spot with some and that won't change after tonight's fight is history.
And that's what will continue to cause a sense of urgency and excitement whenever Pacquiao fights. This is what happens to most athletes who become an iconic figure. Those who love them will overlook any faults, those who hate them will find a way to minimize any accomplishments, no matter how spectacular.

How would anyone know that he fought a"clean" fight if he doesn't perform the way he did the past 3 fights. This is ridiculous. Clottey is a defensive fighter but a strong fighter. He's going to thwart any offense from manny by turning into a turtle. You guys should just get your head out of your butts and actually analyze boxing not analyze a fighters performance with or without PEDS. If you want to analyize it, then anlayze Shane and Vargas.

Right on the button FLo! After the Mayweathers started this TARNISH PACQUIAO campaign , Many of boxing fans, casual and non casual suddenly cast doubts on Manny's true greatness. Right now his is in a no win situation as what you have said. I just wished that Manny has stepped up on the random drug testing at least in this Clottey fight and come out with a spectacular win so that many of the haters and unbelievers will somehow diminished. But who can dictate Manny to do that? None, because if he is really clean ( I believe he is ) and his superstition or his stand against PBF that he can't dictate him, we just have to accept it. As what Larry Merchant said, Manny is the conqueror UNTIL someone knocks him out of his pedestal.

Let the doubters keep on saying whatever they like. Manny Pacquiao is going to look super Robo-boxer, as he knocks out the good guy Joshua Clottey in less than six rounds. Myths about super power from Asian steriods and PEDs will just increase. Spoiled, greedy people who are suffering from a bad economy tend to believe in mystical Asian formulas that can give super strength to walk through bullets, bombs and punchs. They need something to believe in and somebody to hate when defeat after defeat rocks them. Manny Pacquiao is their scapegoat, Joshua is their great ebony dope and Floyd Mayweather is their ebony hope.

Oh please PLEASE, don't get me those crocodile tears, Lotierzo, this article is complete BULL$^H!T. You talkin' as if the side that questions and criticizes Pacquiao was the majority, and it's the other way aroun', man. The 90% of you guys in boxin' and the media idolize and LOVE Pacquiao and don't listen to the PEDs stuff, and have Mayweather family in your target list. It's US, the Mayweather side, and the Pacquiao critics who are the big minority in this case. Me, brownsugar, ali, Kountedout, and Eastar vs the rest of TSS is a good imagery of how things are been played out in the hot zone of boxin' debates. No matter what happens tonight, Pacquiao will still be supported, praised, and loved all over the place. Just navigate throughout the internet and see for yourself all the beautiful spot your hero is in. You will hardly find any writer being a harsh critic. Hehehehehehe, don't tell me now you wanna be in the positioin the Mayweathers are. THOSE are the REAL ones that don't have nothin' to win. Imagine, Floyd is fightin' Mosley, who the majority said Floyd was duckin' last year, and now everybody says Mosley is old, and that Floyd is still scared. No, no my man, it's FLOYD who can't win in the eyes of the World......................cuz they can't wait to see him lose. Get your things straight, Lotierzo. Your main man is the one gettin' huge amount of love, and is always in a win-win case with everybody except the very few minority. Checkezzzzzzzzz!!!

SALT lover, this is a good thing. Praise the fighter who steps up to the plate and gets accolades and not much praise to the one that doesn't. I wish Floyd had done the same thing as Pacquaio then we would have two supernovas at the same time instead of only one. I'll agree with you Pac is not perfect, he could have fought Mosley and wouldn't, but he has fought so many other fights which were great. Mayweather is not a villian but he acts and says all kind of outrageous sh*t however he does have good skills. Now he is fighting Mosley after having no where else to turn. This is why Pac is loved and Mayweather isn't, but hey, you knew this already.

WHY CAN'T WE just accept the fact that some people are supremely gifted? Why must we always nullify Pacquiao's previous fights because of the perceived -- on hindsight -- weaknesses of his opponents? When Oscar was interviewed at his training camp days before his fight he crowed how great he felt, how conditioned his body, how focused his mind was. When he emerged months later from self-exile to pick up the pieces of his life he admitted ruefully that Freddie Roach was right, he "could no longer pull the trigger." Were we supposed to be impressed by this belated admission of weakness? Had he won that fight, would he have said: "I'm an old fighter weakened by age and mileage but I prevailed anyway." Or would he have said: "I'm still on top of my game; no one can beat me." In every physical competition such as boxing, it is always a 50-50 proposition. One party wins, the other loses. If we truly believed a given fight is a mismatch, why proceed with the fight at all? When we allow the fight to unfold and then question the results later on because of the, real or imagined, weakness of the loser, isn't that a big insult to the winner? Here is a fighter who by his sheer maniacal ability to endure pain has prevailed upon his opponent. Do we shake his hand and say: "What a fight! You really are the champ." Or do we sneer at him and say: "Of course you won because the other guy is long past his prime." We sully the purity of the sport we adore when we indulge in this mindless exercise of cynicism. When Michael Jordan and the Bulls beat the Lakers in the 1990 NBA Finals, do we dare say Michael won the championship because Magic Johnson was already fading on his physical prowess? Let us acknowledge without equivocation the triumphant victory of whoever wins between Pacquiao and Clottey on March 13. Let us celebrate the achievement. Let us not belittle it with excuses. Let us give the winner and boxing the respect it rightfully deserves.

Whatever the result is tonight, Mayweather still won't fight PACMAN. Even if he studies every second of the fight, Floyd's fear and paranoia will only grow. As Einstein once said, "No solution can be crafted from the minds who created the problem". The fight tonight is between a Lion King and an Elephant from the Jungles of Ghana. I've never seen an Elephant from Nat Geo buckle under the pressure of the Lion.
It will be a SPECTACLE if he can do it TONIGHT. Have a good time folks!!!

As Ive said before, if Manny is on PED then Bobby Pacquiao should be getting some of that stuff too. Bobby should be up there in the yinyang with Manny mowing down all his opponents. But Bobby's carreer is nowhere near that of the Pacman's. Same thing with all the filipino boxers who trained at Wild Cards Gym and live at the Palazzo whenever they are training together. All filipino boxers should be up there in the P4P list cause if Manny is on PED I bet he will share that stuff too to all the boxers that stay with him in the Palazzo.

i dont see manny avoiding mosley. after the cotto fight it was floyd whos set to face manny, mosley wason to fight berto. i dont see manny avoiding mosley at all. arum and top rank tried to distance themselves from golden boy promotions after the failed negotiation. what i see is the competition between two boxing promotion body competing, nothing more.
floyd is forced to fight mosley because of pacquiaos fight with clottey.
arum set to make mannys fight huge so the dela hoya would be left behind with nothing, dela hoya had to force floyd to face mosley in asnwer to the top rank pacquaio hype. thats how i see it.

manny is a hall of famer. we cant change that now even if manny loses this fight. i dont see manny losing on both ends here. let the great minority, the floyd fans and manny haters say what they want to say, but i for one wont change a bit about how i see manny as great fighter of this generation. the he did cant be undone, he is now the only 7 division champ, and presently the P4P king aside from being the fighter of the decade. let the envious minority sour grape, their hatred sizzle their pathetic grief. theres nothing for them here in mannys fight. the world will still watch and rejoice in mannys fight night win or loose.

Well i agree with the claim that pac's in a no win situation, but not because of the reasons f-lo stated, i think it's cause in many people's eyes, he can't go any higher than he already has. hell some people voted him p4p #2 all time after SRR, so in that sense he has very little to gain even if he KO's clottey in round 1 tonight. also i thnk people are just too quick to heap praise on pacquiao cause he throws a lot of punches and is a nice guy outside the ring. he IS a great fighter, but if you really study how he knocked out hatton, you'll see that he's not a devastating one shot puncher. hatton as jumping forward as he got hit, which is also how he got knocked into the ring post by floyd. jumping forward on any kind of puncher will get you at least shook. and pacquiao launched everything he had into that punch. i think roach's prediciton of a knockout after breaking clottey down is more of a goal than a full on expectation.

I believe Manny is a clean fighter. But to erase any doubts that he is using steroids, right after the fight, he should let them perform blood testing. If he destroy Clottey like he demolish Cotto and found to be clean of any steroids or drugs, then they should already stop destroying this guy's reputation. Go Manny!

You said the....Same thing with all the filipino boxers who trained at Wild Cards Gym and live at the Palazzo whenever they are training together. All filipino boxers should be up there in the P4P list......That's not true just because a guy is having success cheating it doesn't mean that other guys of the same race is going to do the same thing....Thats like saying if I see a black drug dealer with all the money in the world living the kind of life want to live im going to start selling drugs.....U want to know why cause if I get caught or should I say when I get caught the penalty will out weigh the success thats why.

Well, the PAC is just too good to loose at 140 - 147 lbs.
I encourage PPV buyers to boycott the Mayweather - Mosley fight.
It will be a boring fight. Just watch it on replays. dont waste your
$50.00 on a boring fight.
To all Filipino boxing fans and our mexican friends dont buy PPV on that fight. Loud mouth Gayweather ones told during the Marquesz fight the he was the one the people watch and not the great JMM. shame on Gayweather.
