Sugar, Money & Bolo In L.A.
By David A. Avila
Driving into downtown L.A. with its myriad of freeways and off ramps can be daunting. One missed exit can send you to Pasadena or worse.
Luckily, after passing the Staples Center, all was clear for a landing in a cheap parking lot two blocks from the Nokia Theater.
For five bucks I found parking and once I walked briskly to LA Live where the press conference for Sugar Shane Mosley and Floyd “Money” Mayweather would be held in an hour, it was clear that fans, press and promoters had already arrived on Thursday.
A line about 50 yards long was my destination to pick up media credentials for the press conference. Television crews, radio jockeys, newspaper columnists and the photographers all had to wait to get checked in.
About three or four hundred people were already surrounding the small barricades where the press conference would be held under the Nokia marquee and aside the ESPN Zone. The weather was a pleasant 69 degrees with no wind.
All of us media types were told there was food available. I should have known. When there are no photographers around it usually means they’re off eating something. Nobody eats like photographers.
Walking into the ESPN Zone I spot Richard Schaefer walking in with a guy that looks like Joe Calzaghe. It is Joe Calzaghe. Later on he would be introduced to the public.
Hmmm? Does this mean he’s coming back?
In the dining area as I pass through the tables somebody reaches out and taps me on the shoulder, it’s Sergio Mora and his trainers Dean Campos and John Montelongo. Mora will be on the April 3 fight card that features Bernard Hopkins against Roy Jones Jr. He looks fit to fight.
I spot an old sports reporter buddy Louie who works for a television studio. We just sit and talk about the coming fights and then we’re joined by Ring Magazine’s web site editor Michael Rosenthal and later Roger another boxing and MMA writer.
Near 1 p.m. we depart the restaurant to get our seats outside for the press conference. I pick out a front row seat where I can have no obstruction for my video camera.
About 45 minutes there is still no sign of either Mosley or Mayweather. Two Tecate girls are standing in front of the stage and strike up poses on requests. It’s almost 2 p.m. when the conference begins.
During the introductions by Schaefer, I could see one of the Tecate girls mouthing something to the other Tecate girl 50 feet to her left. After several more introductions Oscar De La Hoya begins to say some things when suddenly one of the Tecate girls collapses in a heap.
“Somebody help her,” shouts De La Hoya.
People rush to her side and give her some water. One smart aleck standing outside the barricade yells “I’ll volunteer to give her mouth to mouth.”
There’s always a wisecracker in the crowd.
Finally, Mosley and Mayweather speak.
“There are five ways to beat Mosley,” said Mayweather alluding to his five losses.
Mosley says on May 1, Mayweather will have loss number one.
This is the third and final day of the kick off tour for their fight that will take place on May 1, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“Tickets are almost gone,” says Schaefer.
What? They just went on sale two days ago.
Mayweather promises to show that skills wins fights, not speed or power.
I guess he’s saying that Mosley has no skills.
Mosley smiles that smile that means I’m going to remember that comment.
“People always think I’m just about power and knocking guys out,” said Mosley. “I’m one of the master boxers today.”
Roger Mayweather, who usually has a lot to say, didn’t seem too willing to give Mosley ammunition.
“It’s going to be a good fight,” said Roger Mayweather. “Somebody is going to get his butt kicked.”
Probably the most vocal was surprisingly Nazim Richardson who acknowledged that Mayweather’s fighting skills were superb but still flawed.
“You can’t hit his (butt) with a handful of rice,” Richardson said, but also added that he’s seen the openings but does not want to give Mayweather’s camp a heads up. “I’m not a favor of 24/7 for that reason.”
All systems are go for the fight that Schaefer predicts will break the all time pay-per-view record set in 2007 when Mayweather fought De La Hoya.
“This will sell 3 million,” Schaefer predicts.
Shrine Exposition Center
Damian “Bolo” Wills (27-2-1) dominated the stubborn Billy Willis (12-19-1) for four rounds in a heavyweight bout scheduled for eight. But after receiving punishing blows the fight was stopped at the end of four for a technical knockout win for Wills.
“He’s still a work in progress,” said Sanchez about his newest pupil. “He still has a few bad habits we’re trying to iron out.”
Wills had the edge in speed, power, movement and height. Put that altogether and it proved to be the winning combination over Willis who took a pounding in every round but never tasted the canvas.
Sanchez says that Wills has all the tools to make it to the top level, but first he needs some more work.
“He’s getting there,” said Sanchez.
Ernie Zavala returned to the ring after a five year absence and needed one live round before shaking the rust against Oregon’s Jason Davis. After that first round Zavala opened up.
In the third round Davis seemed to hurt his right arm and tried shaking it looses. When the round finished Dr. Paul Wallace took a look at the arm and advised referee Lou Moret to stop the fight.
Zavala was ecstatic. He’s trained by Freddie Roach.
Perhaps the best fight of the night was El Monte’s left-handed Ricky Duenas (6-1) tackling Chino’s Johnny Suarez (5-3-2) in a junior welterweight fight. For six rounds both battered each other with precision and skill, but it was Duenas who seemed to get the better by a little in each of the rounds.
Suarez found a mark for his right hand leads, but Duenas found openings for his left hands and right hooks. Though he won by unanimous decision, it was not an easy fight. Each round was contested by Suarez, but Duenas always seemed to have more. The judges scored it 60-54 for Duenas who is trained by Ben Lira. The crowd clapped for both fighters at the end and stood up and clapped for Suarez as he left the ring.
Several mixed martial arts bouts took place on the same card. It was good to see Big John McCarthy do his thing. He’s the best MMA referee in the business.
The first MMA card pit Corona, California’s Kenny McKorkell (7-2) against Riverside’s Ronald Lebretom (5-5) in a light heavyweight bout. It took only 2:59 for McKorkell to apply a triangle choke and force a submission from Lebretom.
Corona’s Brian Adam (4-2) didn’t fare as well. He was beaten by unanimous decision against Riverside’s Armando Sanchez (10-7) in a featherweight contest.
Riverside’s Andrew Flores (8-7) picked up a win by technical knockout against Tulare, California’s Rafael Del Real (6-17) at 1:55 of the first round of a middleweight bout. Flores tackled Del Real to the ground and applied hammer fists that forced referee McCarthy to stop the fight.
San Bernardino’s Joseph Lewis (2-1) used his speed and take downs to beat Cesar Urquilla (1-2) in a three round welterweight fight. All three judges scored it 29-28 for Lewis.
Palm Spring’s Jorge Valdez used his long limbs to beat Riverside’s Todd Willingham at 2:23 of the third round by submission. A leg triangle choke forced Willingham to tap out.
In another boxing card, Mexico’s Heder Rivas (5-1) beat San Diego’s Nick Briannes (1-4) by technical knockout at the end of round one. Briannes suffered a separated shoulder and could not continue.

This bout is almost sold? Yea! WHAT a bunch of crap! How many comp tickets have GBP given out? This bout is not doing three million PPVs. It will be lucky to do 300,000. Mosley cannot draw flies, and the people hanging out in the barbershops, on the block and the slick Willies won't pay for dilly squat. This fight is for the Urban communities. Outside that, there will not be a lot of Anglos, Mexicans, Asians and other Latins standing in line to see a big mouth beat an old mouth. WAKE UP and WELCOME yourself to REALITY.

Mosley Boma Ye!!! Mosley gonna knock his noggin's fo' sho! Holler! #1 welterweight in the world vs. #3... not just any number 3, the one who got all his recognition for beating in his last two opponents: a jr.welterweight champion, and a light weight champion. Holler!

SO FAR SO GOOD... Mayweather is showing up to press conference. Meaning, maybe he will truly show up to fight.... the more I think of it, the more I like it. Like Lotierzo said, this might be a more interesting fight than Pacquiao. I know Pacquiao can win Clottey but who if Shane wins... he will steal the show for real. That's why is more interesting. On the other hand, if Mayweather wins, let's say by KO... then everybody will praise him because he manned up to fight real welterweights. Thennnnnnnn....... I may start accepting he is truly one of the greats. Only by KO I said because if he starts making those zzz.... zzzz.... zzzz fights.. then he will be just that... still a boring fighter.

Nazim really carries a powerful presence,..and he's a very capable public speaker,....Nazim's praise and respect for Mayweather and his team set a respectful tone for the entire press conference.....Praise from a respected Elder aways brings out the boyscout in Floyd,.. he looked at Nazim with the same reverence that a 10 year old kid looks up to his War Veteran GrandFather,.. Floyd couldn't find enough good things to say,.. even giving props and a shout out to Shanes Dad,..they finally let Roger out the closet to speak too,.. a man that can barely hold a microphone much less speak coherently into it,.. but to Rogers credit,.. he went all "eagle scout" on the mike too,.. and although Roger will never win a toastmasters competition or a poetry slam.....He probably speaks BOXING better than 98% of the other trainers out there,.. (even though Floyd Jr is probably the only one who can understand him),.. their mitt routine is already legendary,... my son and I tried to copy it,... but truthfully I had to go watch some beginning women boxers training films just to come up with a basic routines I could follow,.. that was several months ago,.. and I'm still nowhere near ready to try the stuff that Floyd and his uncle do,.. Shane has a gleam in his eye and a pep in his step that I haven't scene in a while.... he literally thrives on this level of competition,.. Even forcing Floyd had to adjust his approach,.. Because bringing Chickens in a cage and acting like he's gonna break out a can of Whoop-ass on the stage doesn't even faze Shane,.. they looked like two country cousins at a family reunion yesterday squabbling over who's going to get the last rack of ribs... Regarding the promotion,.. I can't believe all the Promotional Tie-ins,.. I'll probably be sitting at the fight with a Dewalt powerless drill in my tool belt,,.. while downing a case of Tecate,.. and mailing in rebates to watch the fight for free in the process...Major Sponsors have contributed in a big way,.. donating $$$Millions$$$$ to piggy back the hype and adverstise their products by handing out huge rebates towards PPV costs for purchasing there products,...this fight might even "JumpStart" the economy (just kidding)... hope everybody remains healthy,... Floyd pulled up his shirt to reveal an deadly serious iron cast six pack,.. which tells me that in between beefin at the clubs with Rick Ross,.. he's found time to stay in shape,.. and we know that Sugar Shane,.. trains and spars regularly at big bear,..this event is going to REACH EPIC PROPORTIONS,.. hope everybody stays safe &healthy untill the event ,.. boxing needs a Show of this Magnitude...speaking of Poetry Slam,.. I'm going to go write another one for next week... open mic tuesdays... peace...

Oh yes!! I forgot a very important part of this fight. Thank brownsugar for remindin' me up! Hell yes! Definitely Nazim Richardson is definitely an important part of this fight. Brownsugar talked about his capabilities as a trainer in matters outside the ring, which is completely True. However, INSIDE the ring, he's a very powerful weapon Mosley has, and the Margarito fight proves by definition. There's definitely knowledge and a great boxing school in Mosley's corner durin' trainin' and durin' the fight, plus I don't know if B-Hop might visit Mosley and tells him some side tips also. Those guys definitely have me nervous and a little bit concern. Floyd and his team are great boxin' skills and they have a vast boxin' knowledge, but they are not gonna go against a frontal one-two combo fighter everybody thinks is the best just cuz he looks good against aggressive fighters, but looks completely stupid against technical fighters, ex Juan Manuel Marquez. They're goin' against a complete fighter that has dominated BOTH aggressive and technical fighters. That's what makes a complete fighter: one that can dominate both aggresive fighters and technical ones too. And that's the definition of Shane Mosley. UUFFF!!! This is a great fight......'Who Are You Picking'? Checkezzzz!!!

Hey, Salt, I wouldn't be so concerned about Mosley being a "complete" fighter at all because he hasn't changed as a fighter, for better or worse, since the mid 90's. Still training at big bear. Still using Oscars sparring partners. Still resorts to one big punch when he is being out boxed, and still has a suspect defence. Nazim Richardson can't step in the ring for Mosley, and even if he did, he would get his ass whooped too haha. The best thing Nazim can do is give Shane a good game plan but not all plans work. Peace out.

yeah,.. this is going to get real interesting,.. I was watching Shane in his fight against the former Boricua King of the Welters himself,.. Miguel Cotto,..on youtube earlier today,.. I noticed that Shane had to tie up Cotto every time on the inside,.. because Cotto was too formidable and dangerous in close,.. but in the Margarito fight,.. Shane could do what he wanted in close,.. (hook,.. or tie up),.. because the much slower Margarito simply wasn't as much of a threat on the inside...(basically Shane is not an inside fighter anyway) and you're right the presence of the Brother Nazim factor,.. he is going to insure that the best version of Floyd MUST show up on fight night...

I got my $ on the old dog Sugar Shane @ +275 - mmmm juicy. Got +300 against Margarito. Gym Rat Shane will be as good as ever with Richardson in the corner, despite his age & the layoff he is a true warrior who gets around in fighting condition all year long. Floyd is a very smart boxer who wins fights by using technique, freak elusiveness, clever strategy & his god given ability to adapt & react on the fly - on the other hand; Richardson is one of the very finest tactic / strategy guys out there, I think without doubt he will deliver a very potent & dangerous Mosely, who also has god given boxing gifts don't forget - had Shane had Nazim in his corner instead of his limited father, it's likely he'd still be undefeated. Floyd has never faced a puncher like Mosely - what will he do if SSM hits him with a nasty one to the ribs? Floyd will have to pull out the performance of his life to get out of this one unscathed. Hercules could'nt knock Shane out let alone Floyd, he has a granite chin & Floyd does not have the power to scare or hurt Shane even if he were to land 1000 clean counter shots with his brittle little hands. The only time I have seen Shane hurt was when he got nailed by that shocking headbutt against the late VF. I believe Floyd is gonna at some stage have to stop & fight in this one & I don't think he can handle Shane's physicality & brute strength, that aside from his fluent speed & huge heart. Shane is most definitely a dangerous man @ 147 & I give the Mayweather camp credit for taking this one - this the first meaningful fight they have made in a very long time maybe since around the time he fought Castillo & Chico. Gotta say the Marquez fight should never have been made - Poor JMM deserved better than to be handfed to a bigger, quicker & better guy. He is a great fighter & despite his deserved payday Floyd should have come in @ weight, - JMM looked awful sluggish with the extra weight. I even think Floyd could make 140 still, a fight against Marquez @ 140 might not have been such a one sided contest / sparring session. Block-fisted Mosely could KO a bucking bull @ 147 when he is on - 154 was never the weight for Shane, love his heart but it took away some speed & reflex. Shame he skipped 140 straight to 147 - I always thought he would have been awesome & possible GOAT @ Jr. WW; A fight between him & someone like Tszyu back in the very late 90's would have been a classic. Go to the body early Sugar Man; get rough & upset him & his rhythm get him looking at the ref, maybe a 1 or 2 low shots will do just fine - he hates getting hit - that's why he loves the smaller guys. Different story May 1st. 2 special Fighters & 2 of the best trainers - Uncle Rog' is a funny dude, a once very good fighter & a hugely underrated trainer. This could be be a classic & lets hope so. A great match for the fans this one. This is what the fight game is all about. CAN"T WAIT!! Maybe Floyd can back up his claims to greatness - I doubt it - like Roy Jones, Mayweather has spent his best years avoiding guys who posed some danger (exact opposite to Shane) & that will come back to bite May 1st. Mosely is 2 leagues above anyone Floyd has ever beat - FACT. Experience against much tougher oppostion will be the difference in this one. Mosely by late & fearsome K.O.

brownsugar, it is True that Mosley's best performane is done durin' the inside. Yeah, I also noticed that in the Cotto fight, however, I also think he fought the wron' kind of fight with him. I think he should've boxed and use his skills more, rather than try to after him. Mosley in my opinion fought with the wrong game plan against Cotto. Also, De la Hoya's strategy against Mosley back in 2003, also, was to keep Mosley at bay. We can be assured Floyd will do just that with Mosley, keep him at bay and counter him, even if Mosley's speed is a very big obstacle to counter...................Eastar, Mosley is a very dangerous opponent. The problem with him is trhat he gets caught up in the action. He was a strong Lightweight and he's a very strong dude right now, so he prefers to use his strength and power than the mad skills he has. I called him a complete fighter cuz he knows how to deal with aggressive fighters and technical boxers, and slick boxers like Floyd too. And dude, Richardson IS a big plus in that corner. The dude knows his game, and has been there a long time, it's just that this is the recent times that he got exposure, but he knows what he's doin'.

JEALOUS! Now that is funny! It is typical that many of Mayweather fans are kind of crazy. Mayweather-Mosley will not draw 3-million PPVs. Outside boxing, there is not even a buzz about this bout. It doesn't matter that Mosley cannot beat Mayweather. Mayweather has already lost seven rounds and can only win the bout by knockout. Mosley is going to retain that WBA title belt by bad decision any way it goes. This is more of what the Mayweathers should have been afraid of. There will not be three judges voting for Mayweather. He is target for defeat or a draw.

I guess that they are now nervous that our boxingscribes are now on A-side Meth. Banning a whole country's media is not American. Is that why Juan Manuel Marquez is STILL the lightweight champ in the Ring Magazine rankings? It's been over a year since the Diaz defense and does anyone know if Marquez has a specific title defense lined up yet? I like the Ring Magazine, but they are starting to tick me off with their lax rules. You have to be able to go by your own rules and I'm a fan of Marquez, but it's the truth. Also, just so there's no confusion and for the thousand'th time, I'm picking Shane Mosley to be the brakes off of Mayweather with a UD. That's not set in stone though. I really hope Shane can pull out at least one more great performance, maybe even 2 or 3 more, before he's done. What do you all think?

For the record, anyone who believes that Floyd Mayweather is soft .... is soft in the head. You do not go into boxing and emerge undefeated by being soft. Im watching the fight with Mosley vs Cotto and and Cotto fought a smarter fighter then Mosley and Mayweather will do the same. Now I know Nazim Richardson is in his corner and that is a big difference but once things not go as plan he will go back to the old Shane and that is really going to get him his ass kicked. Another thing is Molsy fights kind of tense and and the later rounds he starts to take deep breaths I think thats when Mayweather will really start to put hands on Mosley and coast to a UD thats my take.

I think Mayweather is a better over all fight on the inside some people think thats were Mosley has the advantage. The reason I say that is because the only punch Mosley throws on the inside is the left hook to the body sometimes he will throw the right but very rare thats why he hasn't been able to stop ass many fighter sense his days at 135. Now Mayweather throws the uppercut the left & right hook to the body and is harder to hit on the inside then Mosley. Mosley will give him problems early but in the second half of the fight will be all Mayweather.

One last thing Mosley doesn't hit as hard as alot of people think....I mean Cotto was hurt bad by Chop Chop ,Torres and a few other fighters but Mosley just was only able to stunn him but not really hurt him like some lesser fighter. Now he does have more power them Hatton, Marquez but Mayweather has fought Chico, Castillo, ODL at 154 and has sparring with lightheavy weight so I don't think the size and power Shane has over Mayweather is going to mean alot

Yeah, but still, Mosley's the strongest fighter Floyd will face (Probably will ever face) so far. That, combined with great boxin' skills, Mosley has all the tools to beat Floyd. More than anybody in 147-154lbs, Shane Mosley is Floyd's most dangerous opponent stylistiscally speakin'.

Mosley will be dispatchin', with some body snatchin', jab and right hand, he will send Money May to the stands, Leonard Ellerbe will be saying God _____ , and Mosley will be Son of Uncle Sam, fo' sho!

Your Your 100% right im not trying to say Floyed doesn't have his hands full cuz he does but I think Mayweather will be able to exploit the mistakes Mosley make in the later rounds.

Floyd's 1st defeat must have been recorded long time ago but he cleverly avoided Mosley for almost a decade. BUT THINGS ARE MEANT TO BE and it will happen in a few months time. Shane is still the same stuff he is made of as it was evident in his most recent fight with Margarito. Regular work out and sparrings with specially chosen guys in the gym will work wonders for Shane without a doubt. Whether or not the Mayweather's camp recognizes Mosley's potential threat of handing Floyd his first defeat is a reality that will come around to them. Floyd's future fights the night after will be worth a measly $999,000. A Pacquiao Mosley showdown will mean $30 million dollars guarantee for each.

You Have To Take The Test To Be Called The Best
