Hernandez Makes Chop Chop Go Night Night On ShoBox

By Michael Woods

Chop Chop Corley's been on  a solid run of late, especially considering all the mileage the 35 year-old has on him. And for four rounds at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California on Friday night, Corley was giving Freddy Hernandez all he could handle and more. But a double shot of rights in the fifth put Chop Chop night night, to the extent that ref Pat Russell didn't need to count past four.

It looked like it was going to be a long, hard slog for Hernandez, whose sole loss came in 2005 to Golden Johnson. But his game changer right cut the evening short, and gave Corley just his third stoppage loss since turning pro in 1996.

Hernandez (age 30; from Mexico, living in CA; 27-1-1 entering) was 148 pounds, while Corley (former 140 pound titlist; from DC; age 35; 36-12-1 entering) was 143 pounds at the weigh in. The contract was okayed for a pound over the 147 pound limit, so it was surprising when Corley, a winner of five of his last six bouts, gave up five pounds.

In the first round of the ShoBox feature scrap, we saw that CC's hands are still speedy, and he sought to make the fight, not just skate through. He chowed a straight right, and nodded to Freddy in appreciation.

In the second, a straight right buckled CC a minute in. But he looked sure of himself, even winging lead left uppercuts. A slice showed up on Freddy's right eye, from a butt.

In the third, Freddy's weak jab didn't scare CC. But that right, different story. CC sure did respect it, anyway...

In the fourth, both men continued some solid body work. CC plowed forward, doing his thing, and then sometimes clinching. His right hook scored well through four. CC slipped to the mat, and ref Pat Russell proved his worth with an eagle eye at the end of the round.

In round five, a vicious right sent CC down, and had him asleep. Russell didn't even finish the count. The end came at 1:48. All the judges had the fight knotted at 38-38 through four.

Francisco Contreras (12-0 entering) from the DR met Juan Castaneda (a pumped up 16-2) of Mexico in a junior welterweight scrap which kicked off the TV portion of the event.

In the first, Contreras put himself on the TSS Prospect Watch list. His jab is no joke, and his power punching is top tier. A vicious combo ended the night for Castaneda at 1:38 of the opening session

Chuck Norris:  Looks like Hernandez was going to be burnt to a crisp, but instead Corley became Chop Chop Suey.

MIsterLee:  Can't wait to see the fight. Glad to see something else going on other than Pacquiao and Mayweather. So who's williams fighting next? I gots Ward, dirrell, and froch as winners next round. Will valero get exposed? Should we pray for vasquez marquez? I got gamboa over juanma, i hope penalosa makes a comeback, hope donaire gets to beat up more pple and hope he fires penalosas as his chief second... donaire is a solid boxer puncher, and they tried to make him into a double jabber with no right hand, his usual lead left right combo usually works, but he only used it whenever concepcion had him hurt and would stagger concepion in return.. then return to the god awful penalosa style ("he needs a jab to be a complete fighter"). Anyway, can't wait. Holler!

Isaiah:  What's going on everybody? It's pretty boring around here watching this snowstorm come down. Well, at least it's heading towards a snowstorm. Running out of things to talk about. Around here the Superbowl is kind of a big deal between the Colts and Saints. I hear the Saints are really good, but the Colts have a lot of horse power. Ha! Anyway, since I live in Indiana in the States here, I'm obviously going for the Colts. Peyton Manning gonna put a beatdown on them, for sure! Hey, tax money is coming in. Who want's to go play some pool and lay a couple of bucks down on each game? Where's my people at? Donputo69, Misterlee, Anony, Fe'Roz, Hakim, Arturo, AFN, Saltlover, the Roast, everybody's clone, anybody? Hey, you too Editor Mike! It ain't a party without me being able to argue with you about something! What do you say guys?! First round's on me if you keep it reasonable. I ain't your ATM. LOL! Hey, Jesus drank wine with the sinners. Who am I to act like I'm too good to have a beer? Long as I don't do it out of moderation. Let's make sure anyone can play, let's say $5 dollars a game bet? Who's in?

Real Talk:  Old Chop Chop, it's been a good run. Didn't like the news but hey...comes with the territory. Hold ya head and pass the knowledge to some of the young pups coming up. I see Chop Chop training and working somebodies corner. Dueces

AFN@Isaiah:  Hey man I'm in. Make mine a bottle of Dog (that's Newcastle Brown to you dudes). Not chilled mind. I've been didicating my time to TV and video games these past couple of months, still watching all the fights, just not writing. But I'm at work now...so any excuse eh. Anyway Chop Chop was amazing, his facial expression was set in stone throughout the fight and never changed until his lights were switched out, then his jaw seemed to be two inches further left than the rest of his face. Within minutes though, he was up and dancing around. In fact anybody just tuning in would have thought the ring announcements were introducing the fighters and it was just about to begin. Good weekend of fights, highlight of which was the Road Warrior getting back for another title shot - mind Rigondeux's stunning body shot was pretty good too. EL TOONOY
