The Overreaction To Mayweather Fighting Mosley Has Begun
By Frank Lotierzo
Now that Floyd Mayweather 40-0 (25) is on the verge of signing to meet Shane Mosley 46-5 (39) a full decade after Oscar De La Hoya fought him, eight years after Vernon Forrest won two decisions over him and two and a half years after Miguel Cotto decisioned him, Mayweather supporters are in everyone's face screaming "I told you Floyd didn't fear Shane."
Isn't it the obligation of a so-called all-time great like Mayweather to fight the best of the best of his era? This is something Mosley has done since making his pro debut in 1993. If Mosley's guilty of anything it's being a little too willing during his career and having not picked his spots like Mayweather has. This makes him the antithesis of Mayweather. If there is a single person reading this who honestly believes this fight wasn't realized sooner because Mosley wanted to take a vacation or that he harbored reservation about the outcome, you're either blinded by your personal bias or you've wasted a lot of your life watching and following professional boxing.
Let me see if I have this right... Finally, after being a pro for 14 years Floyd Mayweather has agreed to take a fight in which he doesn't hold every advantage, just most of them. And I'm supposed to laud him for that? If Mayweather is such a warrior and champion for fighting Mosley four months before he turns 39, and coming off the longest period of inactivity of his 17 year career, then Vernon Forrest, Winky Wright and Miguel Cotto are three of the ten greatest pound-for-pound fighters in boxing history.
Perhaps a more reasoned perspective should be taken into account regarding the pending Mayweather-Mosley bout, one that suggests that even being closer to 39 than 38, Shane Mosley represents the most dangerous opponent Mayweather will have faced at any weight during his professional career. Mayweather could've gone a different direction and taken an easier fight. I'll give him his props for taking a fight that could turn out to be tougher than fighting Pacquiao. I just won't go crazy about it nor do I think he's shed the perception of a guy who has picked his spots.
And as far as Mosley agreeing to Olympic style drug testing leading up to the bout, that's great for Shane. However, if what has been recently written about the procedures regarding the testing for PEDs in boxing is true, who's to say that if Mosley was injecting them that he wouldn't cease doing so just to get in the ring with Mayweather? Apparently the odds of getting caught are minuscule. No - I don't believe Mosley has been using any form of PEDs since the Clear/Balco days, but if he was, you better believe he'd stop instantly. In addition to that - I've yet to have someone point out one fighter who was under the suspicion of using PED/HGH who actually turned in a terrific performance and won a big fight. And if you're thinking Mosley-De La Hoya II as an example, I had Oscar winning that fight by a point and Shane actually looked better during their first bout when he was free of any form of PED/HGH/Clear.
If HGH/PEDs are running rampant in professional boxing, there's all the proof you need to confirm they don't make for a great fighter. Wouldn't you think boxing would be littered with more great fighters and physical specimens than it currently is? Maybe with boxing being so devoid of authentically great fighters it's a testament to the opposite?
I'd rather fight Mosley or Vargas with them on some form of PED than I would them having their gloves loaded a la Trinidad/Margarito. After their fight Oscar De La Hoya said Pacquiao's punches had nothing on them and that he was really more troubled by the speed and accuracy of them. Then he of course changed his tune when Mayweather wanted Pacquiao tested for PEDs. All of the sudden Pacquiao's punches felt like the ones he was hit with by Mosley and Vargas?
In fairness to Mayweather, outside of maybe Pacquiao, even a declining Mosley is the most dangerous fight for him to take as a welterweight. It's not like Shane is bringing a switchblade to a gun fight - the position that Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez were in when they fought Mayweather in his last two fights. Mosley can box and punch, he has good hand speed and is physically strong. Add to that he's mentally and physically tough, he no doubt represents Mayweather's sternest challenge. But he's still six or seven years past his peak, whereas Mayweather is at his peak. And since 2007, Floyd has fought three times compared to Mosley fighting four - so that's a wash.
However, by May 1st, Mosley will have not fought in 17 months compared to Mayweather who will becoming off a layoff of less than eight months. That's a clear advantage for Mayweather. Granted, Mosley was in training to fight Andre Berto, but the fight was canceled. Hopefully those reading this grasp that training for a fight and participating in one are not the same.
As of this writing Mayweather's signature win is his split decision nod over Oscar De La Hoya in May of 2007. In that fight Floyd wasn't impressive and it was more a case of Oscar once again abandoning a style that was working for him than it was Mayweather performing so spectacularly that Oscar couldn't cope with him. If Mosley hasn't eroded dramatically since he fought Margarito, then Shane should bring even more than Oscar did. On the other hand Mayweather is stronger and more confident now than he was when he fought Oscar. Therefore this fight has the potential to be a memorable one.
In reality, if Mayweather beats Mosley it's his signature win, and it cannot be dismissed. But should it do more for him and solidify his stature as one of the greats? I guess that all depends on who you are. However, if it didn't propel Vernon Forrest, Winky Wright or Miguel Cotto, who beat a younger and better version of Mosley into the pantheon of all-time greats, why should it Mayweather?
Mayweather-Mosley will do huge PPV numbers. Floyd's antics and mouth will sell the fight, and Mosley's credentials based on the opposition he has faced during his career will support his end of it. Pacquiao-Clottey isn't quite as intriguing but it's close. That said, Pacquiao-Mosley would be even more anticipated and comprehensively covered than Mayweather-Mosley. So Floyd can't claim PPV superiority over Pacquiao. Because Pacquiao versus fighter-X would be a bigger fight than Mayweather versus fighter-X, at least until Mayweather beats Pacquiao or Manny loses.
Mayweather by default will be facing a better fighter in Mosley than Pacquiao is in Clottey, but Manny has already scored a stoppage win over Cotto who beat Mosley by decision a little over 26 months ago. Yes, it's another notch in Mayweather's belt if he beats Mosley, but it's not the be-all end-all that moves Mayweather into the stratosphere with the likes of Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns. It just nudges him a little closer.
The good news for boxing is both Pacquiao and Mayweather have taken two tough fights, which in fact may be the reason why they may never fight each other because Clottey and Mosley are both live underdogs against them.

Respect to Mayweather for taking the Mosley fight. I'm a fan of Mosley but my main concern with him is his willingness to do anything to get that 'big' fight. Mayweather will surely bleed him dry and no, I don't mean literally. No doubt about it, this is a much bigger fight than Pacquiao/Clottey. There's really no argument there. I guess Mayweather had no choice, it was Mosley or nothing. It's gonna be a tough fight for Mayweather but as a fan of Mayweather in the ring (I'll be honest, I don't like him out of the ring), I expect him to get a close but fair UD. Mosley's certainly proved his worth over the years, there's no doubt about that, but the Margarito win has made an older Mosley look a lot better than he probably is at this stage and I have my own beliefs about that fight. He didn't look too handy in the Mayorga fight until the 12th but you gotta know that Mosley will come prepared for Mayweather. Could it be Mosley's last great performance? Hmm, I'm not so sure. Mayweather has the age, skill and experience to trouble Mosley. A prime Mosley vs prime Mayweather, now we're talking. As for this fight at this stage, good enough and the first proper test for Mayweather since his return. Mosley will have his moments but Mayweather will figure him out. I hope this is only the start for Mayweather.

It does not matter if PBF wins or not the haters will still come up with some kind of bull$hit that Mosley is to old or he did not fight for a whole year or he'eally just a lightweight...and its gonna be the same thing when Pac-man beats Clotty to ..No matter what great fighters do these days its not enough because of critics and the internet. And then you have idiots like ESPN's Dan Rafael who thinks he's gods gift to the boxing media..I don't know you tell me...

Boy, boy, Lotierzo, you better wish Pacquiao's not usin' PEDs. That's gonna be a huge embarrassment to you, and all your work here will go down the drain for praisin' somebody with a huge question mark; you still can't get that out of your head, can't ya? This whole PEDs issue has been on your thoughts the whole time ever since it began, and it's always in your writin' so far. And I can see you've toned down your volume with this article compared to others you've written. With the exception of Floyd not being able to compare himself with the likes of Robinson, Duran, Hearns and such, I don't agree with this thing you wrote at all, but I'll sit back and let the TSS site do its things: their usual Floyd bashin', and the now, the newly Mosley bashin' too, but if Pacquiao's indeed doin' it.............................................. and by the way: "So Floyd can't claim PPV superiority over Pacquiao. Because Pacquiao versus fighter-X would be a bigger fight than Mayweather versus fighter-X, at least until Mayweather beats Pacquiao or Manny loses." ...........................Really? Since when PPV draws have anythin' to do with win or losin'? If that's the case De la Hoya shouldn't had made so much PPV draws like he did when he had 4, or 5 losses in his record, right Lotierzo?

well f-lo, gotta disagree with you on this one. i definitely would have liked to see this fight between the 1999 versions of both of these guys, but what can you really do at this point. seems like they have both wanted to fight each other just not at the same time until now. i see this as far more intriguing than pacquiao-clottey because i see more different possible scenarios unfolding. both guys guys are more versatile than either clottey or pacquiao. mayweather has been accused of picking guys who suit his style and ability perfectly, and i agree to a large extent at the welterweight and jr. welter. but has pacquiao not done the same? all his opponents have been much much slower than pacquiao. of course i'm not saying that it's pacquiao's fault that his speed is lightning, but shane mosley's pleas went ignored, and his team gave the impression that they walked away from mayweather. mosley has shown very little physical decline since 2000. he HAS slowed down some, but his power has not declined, and under nazim richardson he showed a strong popping jab, which floyd showed he can be vulnerable to against oscar. shane has longer arms, faster hands, and a better attack than oscar.

Weren't you one of the boxing scribes that claimed Floyd would NEVER fight Shane?
Now you backpedal and say "Its no big deal that he chose to fight an old Shane"
Revisionist history is something else.
I seem to remember a couple of periods of time whenn young, hungry Floyd was BEGGING Shane for a fight.
Right before Shane fought Oscar, and then again a few years after that when Shane had a toothache.
I'm not even a Mayweather fan, but it's crazy the level of hatred people have for Floyd. He will NEVER get credit from a lot of his detractors. Even if he signed and beat up Manny, you would probably say that he beat up a little guy or such...
Did Floyd slap your Mother or steal your wife or something?
It's obvious that you harbor a grudge against the dude. (Not from this article alone, either- )

This is a bias and ignorant article. Name a guy under PED suspicion who turned in a big performance??? Umm, Roy Jones Jr. tested positive for PEDs, Holyfield's was a frequent user and his files were captured in a federal raid, Vargas and Toney tested positive. This is well beyond suspicion. Suspicion would include many more names. And you can't sound good saying well they only did during that fight.

@ Frank Lotierzo-
"That said, Pacquiao-Mosley would be even more anticipated and comprehensively covered than Mayweather-Mosley. So Floyd can't claim PPV superiority over Pacquiao. Because Pacquiao versus fighter-X would be a bigger fight than Mayweather versus fighter-X, at least until Mayweather beats Pacquiao or Manny loses." (What are you talking about? As a writer, do you even do research, or do you just talk out of your @$$?)
Pacquiao/Marquez - 400,000
Mayweather/Marquez - 1,050,000
difference- 650,000 advantage - Mayweather
Pacquiao/Hatton - 850,000
Mayweather/Hatton - 975,000
difference- 125,000 advantage - Mayweather
Pacquiao/De la Hoya - 1,250,000
Mayweather/De la Hoya - 2,150,000
difference- 900,000 advantage - Mayweather
thats a difference of 1,675,000 advantage in PPV buys, over Manny, against common opponents... plus, Manny fought 2 times last year an did about 2.1million buys Mayweather fought once and did just over 1.05 million buys(that's about half) yet Manny made $39million last year and Mayweather made $30.3million, that's a difference of $8.7million, someone needs to tell Arum to get his hands out of Manny's pockets....

I'm 100% what Yuvie said. Shane 5-7 yrs ago and this is a completely different matchup. Nonetheless, Shane does come to fight !! Hopefully Mayweather can get past all this PED stuff and just let his hands do the talking against Pacman. Somebody send Floyd some Mega Mass 5000 and some Creatine to see how much weight one can gain without PEDs!!
With creatine alone you can gain 7lbs in a week !!!

I think most people here know I've been critical of Mayweather over the years (rightfully so), but I'm going to give him credit for going through with this fight, if it actually comes off (as of yet, Floyd has not signed, to my knowledge). Yes, Mosley is a little past his prime, but he's probably the toughest fighter out there for Mayweather, and I won't diminish Floyd if he should happen to win (I think he pulls out a close UD). That being said, there's no question that Mayweather has most of the advantages in that he's younger, has fewer miles on the odometer, and has fought more recently than Shane. While a win over Mosley would be Mayweather's signature win, there is no way he could ever achieve the status of Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran or Thomas Hearns.

Yet another nonsensical article that is so heavily biased and tainted that it isn't worth reading. I read a couple of select paragraphs to see if anything had changed. Nada. For the record, Mayweather has outsold Pacman 2-1 in every common-opponent scenario. It happened most recently four months ago when Mayweather shut out JMM. So much for that bogus "fighter-x" theory, lol. This is a great fight. Leave it at that and give both men the credit they deserve. Period. Any so-called fan/writer of the sport who can't get behind this one because of personal bias needs to talk about something else.

Salt Lover: Even if Mayweather beats a pushin 40 Mosley and outboxes Pacquiao he still doesnt have a resume to compare with Duran, Leonard and Hearns, not even close. Leonard beat 4 super HOF'ers. Duran reigned unbeaten lightweight champ for 6 years, unified titles, beat an all time great welter king and is the only lightweight to win a middleweight title, Hearns won titles from 147 to 175 and was in one of the greatest fights ever vs Hagler. Mayweather has nothing, NOTHING to compare to this and given those 2 as wins only puts him closer and not their yet.

Mayweather will be fighting a more complete Mosley than the one that lost to Cotto. 1 Cotto who fought Mosley had much less wear n tear from wars. 2. Cotto who lost to Pac was weak from the catch weight, look at his arms and legs....puny. He gave away the one major advantage he had.....power. It even affected him in the Clottey fight. 3. The Mosley who fought Cotto had a weak.....flicker jab and no head movement ....at ...all. 4. No disrespect to Jack Mosley but Shane has a better more formidible corner. All that said I still give the fight advantage to Floyd. The dude is a chamileon. You got 4 rds. Then he becomes the cup..like Bruce Lee said. Floyd is water in the ring. It's still nothing to talk about. Floyd is stil not signing the contract. Then they should fight in the ring and the referee has to raise the hand of the winner or both in case of a draw decision.
This exactly why frustration multiplied if the fight after so much encouraged expectation fight won't happen after all.Have faith
but not so much hope when it comes to Floyd's negotiation style.People want Floyd to fight a real equally risky opponent and not a Marquez once again.

Greetings Mr. Lotierzo. I'm a first time writer, although I'm on the website daily. I have always told myself I wouldn't get into a debate with anyone about boxing if I couldn't do it face to face, but this article compelled me to break my standard. A few things I don't understand about your article. First, why would you so randomly include Trinidad's name in a sentence about cheating/loaded gloves? I can not recall Trinidad even being proven to have used loaded gloves, and vagely remember him being accussed of it. Seems reckless on your part to include that sentence without going into more detail.
Second, I am not blind, so according to you, I most have "wasted a lot of my life watching and following professional boxing". Well you are kind of right. I do love boxing, and I have spent a great deal of time watching it, but I'd have to disagree with you as far as it being waisted time. Because although I am not a Floyd supporter/or fan, I am a boxing fan. and I can not for the life of me understand how, or who he has advoided that was soo worthy of a fight(at welter or any other weight he has fought at). The only welter weights that he's claimed to have ducked are who? Let's see, Cotto, Margarito, Mosley? Really? Alright, lets talk about it. Let's take Cotto first. Do you recall Cotto seating ringside at the Mayweather/Gatti fight? Do you recall them putting the camera on Cotto right after Buddy McGirt stopped the fight? Did Cotto look to you like he wanted anything to do with what he just witnessed? It sure didn't to me. And if he did, do you ever recall him publicly saying so? I don't. Let's talk Margarito. That was simply a numbers game. You are a boxing writer correct? If USA Today offered you a job paying 25k, and the New York Times came and offered you 100k. Which way you going to go? Enough said. Its not ducking, when you can simply get much more money taking another fight(DeLaHoya). Finally Mosley, I know you will disagree but Mosley had his opportunity to fight Floyd years ago and he didnt take it(Mosley did an interview on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights, where he was asked about a fight with Floyd, he clearly advoided the question and brought up going on a vacation). So how was that Floyd's fault? Like I said, I don't like Floyd as a person(seeing him throw money around on HBO's 24/7 actually pissed me off, when I know that some of that money the fool is throwing came directly from me buying his PPV). But that said, you can not deny his boxing abilities, and you can not accuse him of ducking, you can accuse him of taking the big money fight when there possibly where better competion out there. But did the better competion actually have a better chance to beat him? Like Hatton? I do recall many Floyd haters talking big before the Hatton fight, and when Floyd beat him rather easily, then all of a sudden Hatton didn't have any business being in the ring with Floyd, right? So who does? And when Floyd beats them too, are you going to ever give him credit?

Floyd Mayweather is 40-0 and a 6 time world champion in 5 weight divisions. He's a defensive genius who never gets hit, he's the most accurate puncher around, the best counter puncher around, has excellent footwork, speed, reflexes and has beaten fighters such as: DLH (at 154), Hatton (undefeated), Marquez (who i think beat Pacquiao), Corrales (undefeated), Gatti, Judah, Baldomir, Mitchell, Castillo (twice), Chavez etc..and yet you still find a way to talk negative about him. Inside the ring he's the best period.

Maybe he is having a second thought, knowing that Mosley is a bigger risk for a lower reward. He knows that Pacquiao is still the best fight for him...

If Floyd doesnt sign then i think his value will plummet leaving Mosley rather as the more interesting oppotonent should Pacquiao overcome Clottey. Floyd would become a standing joke and as such not seriously sellable anymore.

As of this time, Floyd has not yet signed the contract and Schaefer and Mosley are exasperated about i!. So, let's hold our praises for Floyd first. Let's wait until he ACTUALLY steps into the ring with Mosley. But then again, he must still WIN before he will deserve our praise. Because if he loses (and Mosley can very well beat him, which is why Floyd now having second thoughts about taking the fight?), we would call Floyd an idiot for blowing a $40 million dollar payday only to lose to Mosley for a fraction of that sum.

Don't look for a signed contract or announcment, until after the superbowl, when the signing and the announcement will create the most media buzz, actually it would be good business if they can somehow, get the contracts signed and make an anouncement at halftime during the superbowl

If ever Floyd sign up for the Mosley fight it will be the biggest mistake in his entire career. How can he beat Shane who has an iron chin with his feather fist? And how can he avoid Mosley's monster jabs when they have almost the same speed? I beg you Floyd to reconsider your decision before signing on the dotted line. I don't care if they call you "chicken" as long as you keep your unblemished record.

You fellas are so provincial, there is a whole wide world out there (global market place) Sure Mayweather, Mosley might be a bigger fight here in the US and may very well do better PPV numbers. But Pacquiao , Clotty on a global scale is ten times bigger than Mosely, Mayweather. The Chinese,Japaneses, Thai's and every other Asian country will get to see it for free, All of Africia will be tuned in for free. Pacquiao Clotty will probably only generate twice the gross worldwide income of PBF and Mosely but 20 times more people will be watching , Cheering and drinking beer. Start thinking Global like Jerry Jones, he knows who the big boys are. Check out his video comments on MSN sports,
He claims he was only interested in getting Pacquiao didn't really care who he fought!

Here's the difference between Frank Lotierzo and every other boxing writer who currently writes and covers boxing. Lotierzo doesn't have to interview fighters or quote what others say or have said. Every thing he writes are his own well thought out and reasoned thoughts. Some writers write stuff with all quotes and BS or they repeat what Liebling and others have said and just add window dressing to it to make them sound smarter than they are. Frank can write about a four round prelim fighter or great fighter. Some writers can only write about greats that all boxing fans knows about. Lotierzo can write about how a fighter thinks and the business of boxing to........I live outside of AC and used to catch him on WOND ESPN Radio 1400 AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The guy talks about boxing like no one you've ever heard. He just doesn't hang out with the boxing crowd all thetime. He's the only guy I've ever heard of who shut up Don King at a press conference believe it was after Holyfield-Rahman. Larry Merchant repeated the story to Frank over the air the morning after the fight. I heard him take apart Kellerman so bad on the radio on something they disagreed on, I felt bad for Kellerman. He used to do the Foreman Boxing Magazine show with Roy Foreman out of AC. Every call that came in was for Frank not Roy. In fact he used to tell Roy about George's career things he didn't know. He went out of his way not to make Roy look bad, but Roy got rid of him and brought in a guy who he knew more than and could intimidate an bully. Every writer knows him, and respects his opinion. Not one would debate him in public forum. Yes he's opinionated but he can back up what he says. He can separate the personality from the fighter. He used to give away some great prizes on his show to callers who correctly answered his trivia questions. I found this site by Googling his name and it's a terrific site.

We all have to give PBF credit if this fight with Shane does take place. We also have to acknowledge that this fight would take place only after we give thanks to Andre Berto for pulling out with very legit reasons! Shane was no where near Floyds "next opponent" radar. Remember who was...Malignani, little Hatton !!! I guess the fan and press pressure just got a little under Floyds skin, enough to have him even consider Shane. I say consider because from what I've read he hasn't signed any contracts. And you have to love Bri when he says..."when is pacman gonna fight the top welts?" Wow...he just did!!!! Now, the real question here is....When is Floyd going to fight a top welter?? It wasn't Marquez...it wasn't Hatton....and no, Oscar was not a TOP welter when they fought. Keep that hamster on the wheel a little longer Bri before rattling the cages!

This article is a load! I like Mosley butt you'd have to be deaf or in denile if you didn't hear Shane tell Larry Merchant that he was going on vacation and the dentist rather then fight Mayweather....then he preceeded to give a list of other fighters Mayweather could fight instead. Mayweather called Mosley out thru out the years but I don't want to say Shane was duckin' him I just think he knows he had options and after the Forest and Wright loses he didn't think Mayweather was worth the risk....I think Mosley is just as dangerous as always it's just not all physical anymore he's become a much smarter fighter.

I guess people here haven't read the Dan Rafael's latest article in ESPN: "Where, oh where, is Floyd's signature?
DAN RAFAEL: Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, is usually a calm, cool and collected sort. The former Swiss banker doesn't get rattled easily. Tuesday morning, however, he sounded rattled, expressing concern about why Floyd Mayweather Jr. has not signed his contract to face welterweight champ Shane Mosley on May 1.
It has been five days since both sides acknowledged an agreement on terms. Yet five days later, Schaefer still does not have a signed agreement from Mayweather. He was clearly at wit's end when he called me about it Tuesday morning.
SCHAEFER: "He still hasn't signed. I am so frustrated," Schaefer said. "I wanted both guys to go down to the Super Bowl in Miami to do some promotional stuff. I don't know what Floyd is waiting for. I have no clue. I have a signed contract from Shane on my desk. I have nothing from Floyd. At this point, I don't know," he said. "We want to do some big PR, so this is frustrating. I read Leonard's quotes that it was agreed to and that it was just a matter of time to get it signed, but if it's all done, why isn't it signed? "I always tell you, a signed deal is a done deal," Schaefer said. "It will only be done when Floyd signs, and that hasn't happened yet. I don't know of any deal terms that are not agreed to. I don't understand it."
--------
I have always told people these past 2 weeks that I will only believe he would fight Mosely as soon as Floyd signs the contract...and it looks like he won't sign, knowing the chicken shit that he is. He ducked Mosely for 8 years. What makes people think he would want to fight Mosely now? Before he retired, he also ducked Margarito, and Cotto. And he just recently found a way to duck Pacquiao with his random blood testing bullying tactics. Why do people still want to respect such a fraud of a boxer?

if mayweather-mosley is a bigger fight over pac-clottey, i wonder why mayweather-mosley is not happening on 13th march when the 2 am boxers are available & ready? are they afraid to know the truth that pac is a bigger star now over the 2?
Pacman agreed to be blood tested 3x including 1 in his locker room immediately after the fight, if he's on steroid it will still show. He's not afraid of needles or blood testing. The mayweather camp discovered pacman's kryptonite months before they challenged him, that is blood drawn close to the fight just like what happened in pacman's first bout with morales which he lost. Watch "pacquiao interview by dong puno 2005" on you tube to know better the issue on blood testing.
Pacman has been knocking down his opponents even before he reached the U.S. Watch teenager pacquiao vs mendones on you tube & see for yourself that pacman has always been fast & powerful inside the ring.
The steroid accusation is baseless as it was started by the mayweather & golden boy camps out of jealousy to pacman's success & popularity in global boxing.

100% Agree!
When Floyd beat a declining Oscar, a lot of people gave him a throne. But Mosley beat Oscar twice convincingly unlike Mayweather who after a not so convincing win against Oscar refused a rematch.
Floyd does not belong in the top ten list of welters. He has not shared a ring with any of the nine. A lot of people are blinded with his shoulder roll and big mouth. To 10 year olds and grandpa's I'd be a defensive genius impregnable. To highlight your mediocre skill, shine among lesser lights.

I have always admired your ability to remain cool under fire and defend yourself at all times. As well as your loyalty to Floyd's skills. That said, he is a either a bungler in negotiations or a genius. I say a bungler because every business deal he is involved in recently has been a nightmare. There is a pattern here and it is undeniable. Or he is a genius who, despite his feints toward said opponents, he never intended to fight them in the first place....and thus his bungling is by intent. Either way, the burden of proof....to show us all if and what he has.... is now on one man and one man only. Floyd.

i have a BIG doubt whether the match between Mayweather vs. Mosley will pushed-through for the very reason that Mayweather, Jr. has been stalling his signature in the contract thereby most of the boxing fans are thinking that maybe Floyd, Jr. has a Screw-In-His-Head. Unfortunately, Li'l Floyd will not give Mosley a chance to beat him, simply because he's smart enough to know that Mosley has what it takes to knock him out. Good article, Frank. Again your points are well made. Those that want to give Floyd credit for taking Mosley should have seen this sport in the 80's. When Sugar Ray, Roberto Duran, Hagler, Hearns, Bazooka Limon, Boza Edwards, Aaron Pryor, Arguello, all took the tough fights. Only fighter these days willing to do that and winning doing that is Pacquiao. Mosley has heart and is willing, but maybe too willing. U have to win the big ones to be recognizes as one of the best. Mayweather would not have been nearly the success he is if he was fighting in that era with the likes of Duran, Hearns, Leonard -- all three would have beaten him. hands down.

Guys, follow what I'm saying on this. If Shane Mosley was a great Lightweight and had a win over Oscar De La Hoya and was undefeated going into the first Vernon Forrest fight and Forrest then knocks Mosley down and beats him and this was what, in 2002? Now, if Mayweather fighting Mosley NOW as his biggest threat ever and this really solidifies Mayweather's status as one of the greatest of all time, and Mosley is going on 39 years old, by that logic, shouldn't Vernon Forrest be easily considered the best ever of all time or do you think logically and try not to act like this all of a sudden puts Mayweather above everyone else? Poor Mayweather. Without Pacquiao, how will Mayweather get by on such a small payday? After all, Mayweather will only be clearing what, 20-25 million for fighting Mosley? How will he survive? Even 10 million is not excatly what I call chicken feed... By the way Floyd fans, your boy is healthy right? Check. You know this fight is still a very good payday and would sell well right? Check. There's been enough layoff time right? Check. Why hasn't Floyd signed? What's the holdup? Pacquiao's busy now so there's not another payday as good as this one so in all honesty, what;'s the holdup?

Hey, don't make me stop signing your welfare check. I know Mosley is still a beast. That's why Floyd is going to find a way out of this just like he always does. Since the 2002 Castillo rematch, who has Floyd fought that had a chance to beat him? Zab Judah and Oscar De La Hoya did prettty good, but before Floyd fought Zab for $5 million, he turned down a fight with Maragarito for $8 million. Those are the facts. Yeah, the world was breathless watching Floyd take out Henry Brussles or undersized Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez. McDonalds is changing the name of the Big Mac to the Shane Mosley, but the McChicken can still be called the Floyd. Bring on the haterade because I'm thirsty. I'm lovin it. i have 2 major points here!! frank, ive said it before and ill say it again. highlighting the fact that a fighter under suspicion of using PED's has never won a major fight or performed above his usual standard is sending out a message that it is no big deal to use PED's because it does not give you an obvious advantage!! CHEATING IS CHEATING WIN OR LOSE KAYO OR GET KAYOED!! the fighter that is under suspicious knowingly took the drug trying to gain an advantage in the ring over his openent, the fact that it didnt work is neither here nor there. what if margarito got knocked out in the first round against mosley before he got the chance to land a shot with those rocks in his gloves (if he didnt get caught pre fight) would that not be cheating because he didnt get the chance to use his CHEATING as an advantage???? my 2nd point is - no frank we dont want you laud mayweather for fighting shane mosley, i agree with your assessment of mayweathers 14 year career in terms of hand picking opponents (to a certain extent) but i dispise the fact that people were DEMANDING floyd fights shane and that he is scared of a true challenge at welter, then when he agrees to the fight he is lambated by the very people that DEMANDED he took the fight, because mosley is in the twilight of his career at 38!! then they have the front to come on here and further attack mayweather for hand picking his opponent earlier in his career COMPLETELY IGNORING the fact that this fight will now happen! its one or the other guys! take ya bias blinkers off and keep it real!!!!!!

also fighters grow in quality when they age, everyone is using forrest fight with shane as an example, well here's another fight for your examples, mosley vs margarito 2009! mosley looked outstanding and demolished margarito! at 37 years old. i dont wanna seem like a floyd fanatic but what else can he do other than take the fight.

I think Floyd knows that blood test is not fool proof. He knows Shane can beat the system because he used designer steroid. Shane is just like Marion Jones who never failed an Olympic drug test but admitted to using steroid because she was associated with BALCO. Floyd avoided Pacman to preserve his undefeated record but now he's pushed to the corner to fight a known steroid user. If some people are suspicious of Pacman, then it is easier to think Shane is more guilty especially when he KO Margarito at 37 old, past his prime that seems to have a revitalized energy and becoming better again. Poor Floyd, he is having a nervous breakdown because he does not know what to do now. Should he avoid Shane too and be known as the FloyducKing - best P4P chicken or fight Shane but possibly lose his undefeated record? One thing for sure, ,Floyd is not very eager to fight Shane.

I dont buy this B.S. Mayweather is a joke and you see his true colors when he's in the Hotseat.. yellow! Schaefer has been down this road with Mayweather before, perhaps one of the reasons for his concern. He negotiated a fall 2008 rematch between Mayweather and De La Hoya, which also had been agreed to and was on the verge of being announced. However, Mayweather never signed the paperwork and instead announced his retirement, which lasted 18 months....

Just on the point of "Floyd not fighting (Mosley) the best of his era" .
Lets use a little mathematics to highlight the stupidity of this argument - If Mosley is now turning 39, and Floyd will become 33 this year.
Please explain to me mathematically when was a year that Mosley and Floyd would have been from the same "ERA"???

However, I am upset that Floyd hasn't signed the contract yet while his boy Leonard keeps saying everything is set. Floyd...sign the damn contract! Last time this happened you were supposed to do a rematch with Oscar and you retired.

@El Maromero: Nobody's downplaying the significance of Mayweather fighting the FIRST REAL TOP WELTERWEIGHT HE HAS EVER FOUGHT despite having been a welter for 5 years now, nor is anybody downplaying Mayweather's attempt to become the FOURTH man to beat Mosley and hand him his SIXTH loss, ot to mention a 38 year-old Mosley who hasn't fought in nearly a year and a half. No. Nobody is downplaying this fight at all. LOL.

Floyd signs to fight Mosley - fans complain - why? - just accept that whatever Mayweather does he will get criticised. If he shuts out Pacquaio it won't be enough for some people. Floyd is an all-time great and he beats anyone approx the same weight. Stop hating on FLoyd - enjoy having two all-time greats in our midst (PBF and Pacman) because soon they'll be gone.

The reality is that Floyd sets himself up for being criticized. He had the chance to, as you put it, "shut out" Pacquiao. The only thing he had to do was to, um, you know, take the fight. You're absolutely correct that we have two of the all time greats in our midst. It's a shame when one of them engages in absurd mind games that ends up in an impasse where the two all time greats don't face each other. Floyd likes to choreograph his career too much for his own good. You have to expect recoil from the fans.

Ya'll should stop making pre-packaged excuses for Mosley. Despite his "age", he'll whoop Mayweather's ARSE and you know it. Here's the low down: 1) Floyd's hands are too fragile to take Mosley to the body. That's 12 rounds at least for Floyd to win. 2.) Floyd doesn't have the power to hurt Mosley to the chin 3.) Floyd's output is not enough to stagger or hurt Shane 4.) Floyd's speed is not that much more than Shane, and the gap can be easily nullifed. SO THERE YOU HAVE IT: floyd cannot and will not HURT shane. We all know Oscar is a fighter who has trouble making adjustments, he doesn't know how to cut off the ring, and in his latter part of his career he couldn't produce Knockouts. Sugar Shane is the opposite. Shane will give Floyd hell for 12 rounds or less. Shane is the FIRST p4p fighter Floyd fought in his WEIGHT CLASS. Holler!

The reality still is that in Floyd's prime, for better or worse, as a welter he's fought a jr. welter champion, an old fighter, a guy with 10 losses and only 5 KO's, Zab Mitchell, Shamba Mitchell (who?), a 35 year old lightweight, and now he faces his real LEGIT challenge, and wheres the contract?

yeah and those points are all very legit, i'm just not a fan of making up stuff about a guy you don't like for additional reasons to not like them. yeah zab did knock floyd down and he clocked him another time with a big left, but i don't think floyd gets enough credit for that fight. that was a desperate judah who was faster and a bigger puncher than floyd. with that floyd proved he can hang in and take away the best punch of a guy who's got faster hands and equal if not superior athleticism. let's also note that floyd was cutting off the ring and mixing up head and body shots and having zab judah backing up and looking for a way out of the fight. zab's mentally self destructive, but he's still a pro with a ton of amateur experience and a winning history, and those kind of guys aren't gonna suddenly say "i'm winning the fight, time to give up."

Well it can be said Judah is a hot head, it was noted as a quote by Floyd during the HBO announcing. Maybe at the time it was a good victor, but you take judah at his peak and cotto at his peak or even cotto past his peak and they just don't measure, or zab "the shower door" judah is no match for Shane. If Floyd beats sugar shane, i'll give him a sh***t load of credit, not enough to say he's the man, but enough to put him high in my list. You can't take all of someone's wins away just by beating them once. Mosley has fought some real warrior: winky and forrest in their prime, prime de la hoya, vargars, mayorga, margarito, cotto.... you can't take that away from him win or lose. But if shane beats floyd which i think he will, shane's legacy might just surpass pacquiao, which will make for EASY negotiating b/c you know those two guys come to fight. Then you got urango and alexander unifying in the background, and Bradley weighting in the wings in 2010. In other news, wtf is up with Khan artist? The dude says he wants Maidana, roach says he's not ready. Now khan wants shorter, smaller marquez and says he only wants to fight names, not titles. Idiot. I wouldnt' want to watch that fight. Marquez doesn't have the speed or power to KO khan, it'll be another khan barrera fight. He oughta fight morales while he's at it fo' sure! Maidana would conquer Gengis Khan fo' sure! Holler!

@Frank Z: 5 years, 4 years, same difference. In less than that amount of time, Margarito, Mosley, Cotto and Paul Williams managed to get tangled with each other, and Pacquiao threw himself into that mix in his SECOND welterweight bout. Floyd's two years of "retirement" was nothing but his way of hiding out to avoid further criticism., since a "retired" boxer isn't ducking anyone. He was hoping that all the elite welters would've destroyed one anohter by now and that he could make his triumphant return without having to face ANY of them. Now he has NO CHOICE but to face Mosley, who will undoubtedly be the worst version of Mosley that Mayweather could've fought, but would still more than likely spank Mayweather the way Mayweather Sr. used to when Floyd was just a little boy. I could see Mayweather cowering somewhere right now with tears rolling down his cheeks as Mayweather Sr. holds him, with Floyd crying out, "Daddy, what did you do??? Now I've got to fight Shane Mosley!!!! I've got to fight Shane!!!!! You said that it'd be over after I dodged Pacquiao, but now I got to fight Mosley!!!" LOLLLLLL

yeah Khan has yet to really impress me. i learned one thing that i already knew about him in his last fight: he's fast. he's talking a ton of junk already and he can't do that until he's proven he's psat getting knocked out by what turned out to just be a hard punching journeyman. i'm pulling for tim bradley to make it big from now on, i love the way the guy trains and fights. i think mosley's legacy is already greater than pacquiao. pacquiao has never had the aura of invincibility that shane had as a lightweight. even now as good as pac is i feel like he's very beatable. he took a lot more shots against cotto than just the obvious ones where he stood there and let cotto run his shots. freddie roach, as great a trainer as he is, i think still puts fighters' safeties above that of making them take the toughest fights possible. i cannot blame him at all, since no legacy is worth your long term health, but with that you can't claim any of your guys are all time greats, just the way it is. it would be interesting to see how khan handles maidana, the guy who never gets discouraged when he gets put on the canvas, and throws a mean right.

@Frank Z: "Aura of invincibility" is now the main criteria for one's legacy? LOL. In that case Tyson and Foreman should be #1 and #2 all time. As "beatable" as Pacquiao looks, he destroys fighters that were perceived to have had a great chance of beating him. And as "unbeatable" as Mosley was, he got chumped by fighters he was supposed to beat, like Forrest, Wright and Cotto.

All due to your inconsistency, you said at the weigh in of the Pacquiao-Cotto fight that Cotto looked strong and conditioned. You said Cotto was going to give Manny a difficult time in there. Now you say that Cotto was weight drained. Come on mang'! How is Mayweather going to fight a more complete Mosley when he hasn't fought in over a year, lost to Cotto(skills were limited), and beat a dangerous yes DANGEROUS but a one dimensional Margarito. I will not diminish his win if he beats Mosley but you can't look at this as if he(Mosley) was the toughest fight there is.

The inevitable disparaging of any Floyd opponent has begun by F-Lo (as the Pac fans affectionately call you). The larger boxing community as a whole is looking forward to Floyd facing the man who has to be considered the #1 at WW - a criticism long levied against Floyd. When Floyd fought Marquez he ducked Mosley. Now hes fighting Mosley, Shane is too old, inactive and a typical Mayweather defection from fighting this elusive real challenge. Pacquaio will be too small, Cotto too worn, Berto too immature, Williams too tall and David Haye has no chin - JUST WHO IN THE HELL WOULD YOU GIVE MAYWEATHER ANY CREDIT FOR FIGHTING?

Good for you, i won a debate, you never responded about darnell boone and ward, it wasn't just about the result of the match up, i you lost the debate, you're on my resume. You've also been openly homophobic and disparaging agst gay pple just b/c you have "one gay friend" (I can use the n word, i have one black friend!). you won no debate. i said ward looked like crap aginst boone. he did. he only won by a round or two. i favored kessler. my pick didnt win. thats the way it goes. as far as trying to pin some type of "hate speech" to me it wont work. you act like a little girl talking about klitcos sex life and trying to rile people up from behind a keyboard. you can have your opinion but when you start talking like a lil gossip girl you will be called a sissy

@El Maromero, see how you Mayweather fans are, when Floyd is out of the ring for 2 years he is rusty. But when it's someone else like Mosley he is prime and ready. Mosley has been inactive for 17 months to be exact and has been training for a fight that hasn't happened yet. Isn't that called overtraining? If you think I'm diminishing anything if Floyd wins, I'm not. I'm clearly saying that he isn't the toughest fight out there just because he is in my own opinion the #1 WW in the division. Clottey is the toughest fight out there for a guy like Mosley or Mayweather because of their styles. But he isn't the toughest fight for Manny, it is Molsey or Mayweather.

Smiley "Puppy dog" C's comment from Tuesday Feb 19, 2008 11:40:30 PM, in support of his master, Radam G: "PBF is as good as Radam G says. He is going to stomp the heck out of Cotto if nobody else beat him to it. Cotto has his hand full with Alfonzo Gomez. Gomez may pull a surprise. For real!" Nice pick with Gomez, Puppy dog! And nice sexist comment above. You like to call Isaiah out for allegedly making lewd comments, but it's ok for a little lapdog like you. Awww, he's so cute, little Smiley "Puppy dog" C! Rust is not decided by greatness or by your trainer; the determinant is time. Mosley hasn't been in the ring in over a year and will have been off by fifteen months when the fight rolls around. He WILL be rusty.
Floyd was rusty too... but he was bigger and better than Marquez, so he won. If Pacquiao were fighting a guy that was naturally smaller by a division or two, how long do you think he would let him hang around?

@El Maromero, well that's what most of you Mayweather fans said that he was going to be rusty. The majority fans of Mayweather said that he took on JMM because if was a tune-up fight. Do you remember? I don't know who to believe here anymore some of you guys have your story all twisted.

@Easter. Learn your history man. F-Lo knows his stuff and the confederate flag is not an image of hate, racism or slavery, It's simply showing respect to the soldiers of the south who died serving in that huge war. All the U.S. should appreciate history instead of mocking it and calling people names.

Dear Real Talk, thanks for the concern! I love boxing and TSSU above anything else The two posts above there is someone actually using my screen name AND my email address to post messages (during my tussle with the don i gave out my email openly). Hope you're well and stay outta the snow storm coming tomorrow! And besides the recent posts, which are not not me (the last 2 and the last 4 on the floyd vs. best welter page), I've had history with deepwater and a couple other guys, but I do admit i was trying a little too hard with the don, and maybe even deep water. Women and troubles at the job might do that to a guy, and maybe part of it is some maturation going on. It's not always just a boxing knowledge match either. As a martial artist, i know one of the greatest battles is not with the fist, but with pple's intentions. Pple's intentions carry weight and energy, and martial arts is all about dealing with pple's intentions, neutralizing it, redirecting it, countering it, or in a very xingyiquan manner, sometimes i choose to shatter it b/c sometimes it's not just about I'm right and you're not, but some pple use energy as a way to manipulate pple, or bully pple, or embarass pple, and I don't stand for any of that. Hope you have a good one.

Very good article excellent analysis. Having followed boxing for almost 50 years I know who here really know the sport. I do not consider writing biased emails about your favourite boxer as being truly knowledeable.
I know it is hard to be objective when dealing with family, very close friends or favourite athletes. That is why I generally listen/read the experts who have professional pride and want to be seen as the best of the best. If they make dumb statements or dumb predictions, they have to live with them or be a laughing stock.
Not that their predictions are always right. Remember Tyson-Douglas, Liston-Clay and Oscar-Manny to name a few. However, I respect them when it comes to making post analyses after a fight. They know that as a welter Poultry Boy Fraud has not faced the very best. As a smaller man, Manny has stepped up and faced very tough, bigger guys as a huge dog. Fraud has been huge fav in all of his fights.
As a former big fan of his, I am very pleased to finally see him step up. But unlike others I will not readily anoint him for one fight. He has to face the top guys and stop making excuses why he would not fight a top fighter.
The man has loads of talent and should be held in the same esteem as previous greats but if he retired today, there will be a huge* next to his name because he did not test his skills vs the very best at 147 like he did at 130. He was unreal at 130. And my beef is those who clog the waves and call others haters if they disagree with them.
I have no reason to hate a boxer. They are the ones who train and put their lives on the line. It's their choice. I however feel that like the World Cup or Super Bowl, you can't pick and choose who you would like to meet because of styles or $. As a champ, you must face the top contenders or STFU about being the best of all time. That was Ali's schictk but rather than make excuses to avoid a fighter he went to guys own house to show he was their master. Older fightesr would never allow another fighter to think, not to mention even say, he was better. They would have to settle in the ring.

@Gold Standard
When you talk of Duran, Hearns, Hagler and Ray Leonard you are talking about a completely different era in boxing ... and you only bring up that era to use it to diminish the most dominant boxers of this era.
Roy Jones, who had arguably done more than any of those HOF's, still won't be regarded as highly as they are ONLY because his era of boxing wasn't steeped in brutal bouts .. meaning that the best today don't seek to get into slugfests and instead choose to actually box.
That was one of the biggest criticisms of Leonard during his career. Leonard was often called a runner. Leonard like to hit and make you miss. And once Leonard starting listening to critics he got his eye injury and eventually a detached retina.
Writers and fans who criticize a boxer like Mayweather or Leonard who like to hit and not get hit need to get their own butts in the ring and see what kind of longevity they would have with that approach.
As far as Mayweather in comparison to Pacquiao:
To me there is no comparison. Manny is a good fighter who happens to carry some power. He can be outboxed as seen by Marquez who was knocked down 3 times in the first round of their first fight but outboxed Manny to a draw. Many feel that Marquez won that second fight. I am among them.
Manny is only being compared to Mayweather these days because:
1) Mayweather retired and boxing needed to fill his void.
-and -
2) Pacquiao basically followed behind Floyd to establish a name at welterweight. He first fought DLH. The he fought Hatton.
What's troubling about that is that Roach was DLH's trainer, which already gave Pacquaio an extreme and kind of unethical advantage. When a man trains you, he knows your habits and your flaws. Go figure. Roach even admitted this.
Then, Pacquiao beat Hatton who was already a shaky commodity after having been knocked out for the first time in his career by Mayweather.
How does beating men who had been exposed in their very last match qualify as being superior? The same applies to Cotto who had been wrecked in his match against Margarito. As soon as Cotto tried to come back, Pacquiao was there.
Pacquiao fans need to reevaluate how they define dominance because as far as most real boxing fans are concerned Pacquiao has unfinished business against Marquez who clearly is the superior boxer in the match up.
Pacman fans response to that: "Manny has improved light years since then and another fight against Marquez would be boring".
Typical nonsense. Manny knows that Marquez has his number. Marquez went on record to say that Mayweather would pick Pacquiao apart with his defense and speed after having fought Mayweather himself.
And lastly, if Pacquiao is such the draw and every boxer is drooling to have a shot against him, then why is Shane Mosley fighting Mayweather? Logically, shouldn't Shane have chosen to fight Pacquiao for the money and because Pacquiao is the smaller man? Shane has a much better chance "powerboxing" against the smaller Manny, doesn't he?
The truth is that Shane wants to be THE FIRST to defeat the best boxer out there now. Not only would he be catapulted to P4P#1 for doing it, but all roads would lead to him commanding the lion's share in a match against Pacquiao at that point. And if Roach and Pacquiao failed to give Mosley the lion's share at that point, Team Pacman would be exposed for ducking and avoiding the man who actually beat the man.
Its chess people, not checkers. In order to win the game you've got to capture THEE most important piece. And clearly Manny ain't the king piece that his fans think he is.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
