Lopez Is Going To Handle 126 Really Well
By Frank Lotierzo
After surviving a last round flurry by Rogers Mtagwa in October of last year and hanging on to win the fight, Juan Manuel Lopez 28-0 (25) sure came back with a strong showing in his last fight this past weekend stopping Steven Luevano 37-2-1 (15) in the seventh round to capture the WBO featherweight title. Lopez has now won a world title in two different weight divisions since making his pro-debut five years ago, the first being as a junior featherweight/super bantamweight.
Heading into the bout Luevano had successfully defended his WBO crown five times. However, after sharing the ring with Lopez for one round it was easy to see that Luevano is a tier below Lopez fighting at the world championship level. And that's not a shot at Luevano, who tried everything he could to neutralize Lopez from a style and strategy vantage point. The problem he encountered was JuanMa has the superior skill set.
When all was said and done, Lopez possessed the quicker hands, threw the straighter and more accurate punches and his methodical pursuit broke down Luevano. Starting in the fourth round Lopez began to assert himself physically and maneuvered Luevano around the ring wherever he wanted. With Luevano not having much in his arsenal to hold Lopez off other than his right jab and an occasional body shot, the ending was inevitable. Early in the seventh round Lopez struck with a perfect setup right uppercut to Luevano's chin that froze him enough for Lopez to unload with a barrage of hooks and uppercuts forcing the fight to be stopped.
With Yuriorkis Gamboa's two round blitz of Rogers Mtagwa in the bout prior to Lopez-Luevano, there's a great chance we'll see Lopez-Gamboa later this year. At first glance it would appear that Gamboa's performance was more impressive than Lopez's was. But aside from it being more dramatic I can't say it was more impressive. Against Luevano, Lopez showed us a whole range of what he can do. He's probably the more technically proficient fighter and he can hit.
Gamboa was more impressive against Mtagwa than was Lopez, but JuanMa wasn't as prepared mentally for him and was obviously weakened by making the 122 junior featherweight limit. Lopez looked more comfortable at 126 and his huge legs remind me of Manny Pacquiao's. I'd say he's going to handle the higher weight really well.
Mtagwa was used as an opponent for a majority of his career. His double digit losses threw off Lopez whereas Gamboa had his showing against Lopez to help him mentally ready himself for Mtagwa. Mtagwa was managed well over the last few years of his career and was lucky to get two title shots in back to back fights. He's strong and carries his punch and when Lopez tired late in their fight from being overconfident and a little drained from sucking down to the junior featherweight limit Mtagwa came on.
A matchup between Lopez and Gamboa should be very intriguing. Lopez gets hit and Gamboa can punch. But Gamboa's chin has been less than reliable, and Lopez can punch. Lopez has already survived life and death. In the Mtagwa fight it was obvious after six rounds that Lopez hadn't trained for a long tough fight. It might be one of these fights that they'd split a series if they thought a number of times.
Both Lopez and Gamboa looked terrific this past weekend. Gamboa turned in the more dramatic showing, and Lopez was more methodical against a better opponent.

Yes! JuanMa is going to be great at 126, 130 and 135 and maybe 140. I expect for him to win title belts in all those weight divisions. Gamboa is a borderline good pro. He is still quite amateurish and has too many bad habits and flaws. At this point in JuanMa and Gamboa careers, I predict that Lopez would stop him in seven rounds or less. Gamboa's crowding himself, overstepping and leaning in and to the side will get him exposed by JuanMa. Good thing that Uncle Bob is not going to match them until the interest and money are BIG! Holla!

I go for JuanManuel Lopez over Yuriorkis Gamboa. They both have great fubndamentals, but I think JuanMa had the edge in experience cause he has fought with Gerry Peñalosa, my idol.

Gamboa is going to have to be match very carefully. He is a knockout waiting to happen. He looks sharp to those who are looking, but not to those who are seeing.

Arum said he wants JML and Gamboa to clean out the featherweight division and then meet in the summer of 2011, in the new Meadowlands Stadium. Like Salt Lover said under a separate article, the featherweights (and abutting weight classes) are pretty deep right now and there's no guarantee that these guys retain their undefeated records with the depth that's out there, and thus weaken, as oppose to strengthen, this potential clash. Just another case of a promoter outthinking himself.

MR. LOTIERZO CONFIRMS WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING... the only thing missing is that Juanma should fight Yuriorkis sonner than later because Gamboa is getting better and better. One year from now he will become a greater threat so it will be wise for Juanma to deal with him this year. Obviously, I'm rooting for my countryman if they fight!!! but still I'm becoming a fan of Yuriorkis. They both are A+ fighters.

Dear Radam, :
|
...keep dreaming. Or to quote JMac: You cannnot be serious! poor Juanma is just another good boricuan fighter, nothing more. Gamboa is way out of his league. The "knockout waiting to happen" crap is been thrown at him since his pro debut, and 17 demolitions later it hasn't happened. To not appreciate what he brings to the table shows you're, at the very least, biased. But again, keep dreaming.

We'll see how JuanMa does against a puncher in the division. I'm not completely sold yet. His next fight should be against another title holder. That way when he fights Gamboa it can be for all the marbles.

I was impressed with both fighters on Saturday night. Gamboa seems to be improving. When he first had Mtagwa hurt, he didn't get wild trying to get him out of there, but rather was patient and set up his punches. His talent is undeniable, to be sure, but there is still much improvement to be made. I like the way Lopez closed the show and finished Luevano when he had him hurt. So far, it looks like moving up in weight was a good idea. I would have liked to see him stay at 122 and take on Caballero, but maybe they can eventually fight at 126. A few months ago, I would have called Lopez-Gamboa a kayo win for JuanMa, as I have been very critical of the Cuban taking chances and leaving himself open. Right now, I see it as a pick 'em fight. Gamboa seems to be improving some of his deficiencies, and his speed and power are frightening. Hopefully the fight comes off sometime this year.

Good point Radam...I see juanma winning titles at 130, 135, and maybe 140 in the near future...as for gamboa?...the kid can fight...he is very good...he reminds me of a young Shane mosley...fast with pop...anyway...this fight needs to happen ASAP...Like Anony said...I'm rooting for my boy juanma...even though little by little I'm becoming a fan of gamboa...I say juanma by TKO in the 9th round...you heard it here first...holla back!!!

Gamboa said after the fight " I don't want to be compared to JuanMa,.. he and I are 2 different kinds of boxers,.. the Mtagwa Fight is not a good indicator because JuanMa fought him at 122 and I fought him at 126lbs,.. don't use this fight to compare us",.. I watched all of Gamboa's fights on youtube,..and I've seen all of his fights live except one... he's been down 4 times,.. once he really looked hurt,.. but he popped up instantly and KO'd his opponent with one punch in the next round...Gamboa will actually hold his hands high for some guys,.. JuanMa is pretty durable,.. but if Gamboa comes in and fights up to his potential,.. he'll have Juanma at a deficit after 3 rounds and fighting for his life by the 6th... his feet are faster,.. his hands are quicker and his excution is better,.. JuanMa is definitely a crowd pleasing warrior with a huge fighting heart,.. but Gamboa is on a whole nother level when it comes to raw skill. he didn't show a tenth of his talent last saturday...I hope neither guy gets picked off before they finally meet each other...

I remember noting the size of Lopez' calves in the replay of the finishing flurry. Those calves make me think he can carry his power as he moves up. And like Tito, he finishes you when you're hurt. I like this kid.

For me Gamboa looks more like a young Pac though Gamboa got lesser movement and lesser punch out put compare to Pac but the speed and power is in there... It's going to show who's going to be next big thing after Gamboa and Lopez face each other, can't wait for this one... The next era of boxers is coming...

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
