Kaliesha West & Friends Back In Action On Thursday

By David A. Avila

Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West spearheads a Southern California fight card that includes three of her Riverside team mates on Thursday at San Manuel Casino.

After a very meager 2009, West (11-1) hopes her fight with former three-division world champion Ada Velez (16-3-2) indicates that 2010 will be more lucrative or at least busier than a previous recession starved 12 months.

“Before that I fought about five times.  I was so active throughout the year (in 2008) then last year, I was not getting any action. You would think I would because I had just lost to Ava Knight. I was real surprised I only got one fight,” said West.

Despite knowing more than a month in advance that she would be included on the San Manuel fight card, it was still difficult to find an opponent. Age restrictions forced Britanny Cruz off the card and others were unable to be considered. Only Velez was acceptable because of her pure talent.

“I love when two women who are real good come together to meet. The crowd gets to see something spectacular and I really love it,” said West, 21. “When you have two women who are really good and mean we’re putting it on the map for women’s boxing.”

Velez, a southpaw who lives and trains in Florida, has fought numerous greats in the past. The Puerto Rican boxer has been inactive for the past two years due to legal problems. But she’s very capable of derailing West.

West says there is only one regret in taking this fight with Velez.

“I wish it were more rounds,” said West, who will be fighting at a contracted weight of more than 122 pounds though she considers herself a 118-pound bantamweight. “I’m excited about fighting Ada Velez. Anytime you get two good fighters it’s going to be exciting for the fans.”

Other fighters from West’s gym on the card are Jose Reynoso (11-3) who meets Azusa’s undefeated junior welterweight Aris Ambriz (13-0). A fight of this magnitude is usually televised but you’ll have to witness this in person.

Riverside’s Reynoso, 25, has been fighting professionally since 2003. The former Golden Gloves winner has fluctuated up and down in weight until stabilizing as a 140-pound junior welterweight.

“The guys were too big for him at 147 pounds,” said Charlie Perez one of Reynoso’s two managers. “He’s much better at this weight.”

The lanky southpaw has won seven of his last eight pro fights. That one loss came in a brutal eight round fight that saw Reynoso survive three knockdowns and rally to give former Irish Olympian Dean Byrne his toughest scrap. Both fighters were injured as Byrne suffered a bad cut and the Riverside boxer injured his hand.

“My hand is much better now,” said Reynoso who proved it with a six round win over veteran Fernando Montilla of the Philippines.

“He was in great condition for that fight,” said Ruben Castanon who co-manages Reynoso. “He’s in better condition for this fight coming up.”

Ariz is a tall junior welterweight who packs a punch.

“I’m even more ready for this fight than my last,” Reynoso said.

Also on the San Manuel Card will be South El Monte’s southpaw prospect Ricky Duenas who seems to improve more and more with his timing and natural fighting instincts. San Bernardino’s Artemio Reyes Jr. has that look of a much better fighter than he shows. Despite suffering knock downs in two previous fights, he’s managed to rally and win. That’s a good attribute, but he can do much better. And finally Moreno Valley’s Sean Solomon gets to show local folks what he can do. The southpaw bantamweight has quickness and pop.

Friday

On Friday, about 25 miles west of San Bernardino, it will be Thompson Boxing Promotions bringing its first show of 2010 and in the main event Venezuela’s Patrick “El Elegante” Lopez (17-2, 11 KOs) collides with bad news John Brown (24-16-2) a former contender. Brown has fought a who’s who of lightweights and junior welterweights like the late Diego “Chico” Corrales to current welterweight kingpin Sugar Shane Mosley. The small but powerful Brown is the gate keeper for junior welterweight contenders. It should be an interesting match.

Also on the Ontario fight card will be Riverside’s undefeated Hector Serrano getting a huge test against Mexico’s iron-chinned Cristian Favela (17-23-6). Forget Favela’s record. All of his fights are brutal or super competitive. Carson’s lightweight Daniel Hernandez and Riverside’s junior middleweight Albert Herrera will also try to remain undefeated in separate bouts.

Radam G -- kind of getting weak in the knees:  Dangit! WOW! I can understand the Roast! Did all the women in the Wild, Wild West look this good back in the shootin' up days? My God! My God! Pray for me, Rev. "Big" George Foreman for the devil is an arsehole! C'mon, TSS West Coast Editor David-Double-A, nice story, but GOSH! Tell Editor Mike, no piling on with an angelic foto. There are guys who are trying to keep good thoughts and be gentlemen. They are going to get KTFO if their wives or girlfriends peep over their shoulders. No flicking way will any women believe that a boxer looks this darn good. I gotta to go! Holla!

Peter Egley:  Nothing against Kaliesha West, but I hope that Ada Velez will be sharp enough after the lay-off, this sounds like a hard comeback fight. The card sounds very good, wish it'd be televised. "Other fighters from West’s gym on the card are Jose Reynoso (11-3) who meets Azusa’s undefeated junior welterweight Aris Ambriz (13-0). A fight of this magnitude is usually televised...," man, I don't know these guys but I feel hyped just reading about'em. I'm only midly familiar with Velez and West not at all really, but I think Ada is called "The Ace," and she has been to my memory involved on some level with the tutelage of current best female fighter, Melissa "Huracan" Hernandez. Anyway, it's too bad the first card you speak of isn't a Friday Night Fight offering. Jose Reynoso-Aris Ambriz does sound excellent! Oh, well, perhaps they'll have a good show coming up. I may have skipped over it but I didn't see how many rounds West vs. Velez is, I'll check however. West certainly has a good attitude it sounds. Not to detract from these fine cards, but Ann-Marie Saccurato vs. Layla McCarter has been mentioned by both the women, and I hope it happens this year. God bless.

the Roast:  This is perhaps the hottest photo I have seen on TSS. Just what the Roast needed. The black and white adds a touch of class. Beautiful face, nice hair, love the handwraps. I have had a tough few days of late with the cancelled Berto-Mosley fight and Sharapova getting KOed in the first round at the Australian Open, now I hear Tiger is at a sex rehab clinic. Come on Tiger, dont quit on me! We five letter nickname guys have to get our groove on. Is AA vs Dirrell this Saturday night? Where is the hype?

ultimoshogun:  Welcome back Egley! Hey Roast, at least Sharapova lost to the equally beautiful Maria Kirilenko....I'll be rooting for her the rest of the way even though she's a long shot to win it all.

Peter Egley:  Hey, ultimoshogun! I dig women's tennis, too. The thing I have against men's tennis is they can be such a marathon with the five sets. Ugh. The three sets is a much faster game. I cannot think of her name at the moment, but I miss the "Swiss Miss." Oh well, right.
Wednesday Jan 20, 2010 12:31:45 AM
the Roast:  @ultisho, You got that right my brother. That was some great Maria on Maria action. The other Maria won her second round match. I'm picking Clijsters to win it all. You gotta love the ladies tennis. Viva la Eggs!
Wednesday Jan 20, 2010 12:39:53 AM
the Roast:  @Eggs, Martina Hingis.
Wednesday Jan 20, 2010 12:43:28 AM
Chuck Norris:  You can't keep a good Chuck down and I'm not about to stay down either as I see the obvious beauty in the photo above. I might have to break out the champaigne bottle for this one. Maybe some sweet jazz music, some chocolate covered cherries, a tender bubble bath and just simply ordering in some Chinese with the "Chick Flick" of her choice and she'll melt in Chuck's hands faster than I could roundhouse kick Paulie Malignaggi across the Earth. Okay, let me just go ahead and turn down the lights and put on a dash of cologne and I'm all her's for the night. They all get stuck on Chuck.

vistaman44:  Brittany Cruz is 20 and a few months. Is there a prohibition against pro fightes younger than 21 in California? Why could she not fight?

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
