Berto Devastated By Family Lost In Haiti, Pulls Out Of Mosley Bout
By George Kimball
NEW YORK --- In the six days since a devastating earthquake struck his ancestral homeland, all but leveling the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, it has been increasingly clear that WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto was finding it all but impossible to devote his concentration to his scheduled January 30 title unification fight against Shane Mosley.
Preparing to face an opponent of Mosley's caliber would have been difficult enough under the best of circumstances. Doing so with one's eyes glued to CNN for up to 20 hours a day in between the largely-vain attempts to reach Haiti by cell phone made it all but impossible. On Monday, Berto bowed to reality and announced that he has decided to withdraw from the Mosley date.
No one will question the wisdom of Berto's decision, but as the horrific pictures continue to find their way into American living rooms, some may wonder why it took him as long as he did to pull out of the fight; but in the end, postponing this date with destiny was not only a wise career move, but from any sense of honor and respect to the affected and bereaved, it was the correct moral choice as well.
"I have seen the pain in my parents' eyes as they attemp to understand what has happened to our homeland and recognize a place they once called home," said Berto in a statement released at 4:45 on Monday. "As a result of this disaster, I am mentally and physically exhausted, and I have no choice but to withdraw from my bout on Jan. 30.
Although some will inevitably attempt to draw comparisons, this isn't a matter akin to President Roosevelt asking Major League Baseball to keep playing during World War II, or like Don King deciding to proceed with the Bernard Hopkins-Felix Trinidad fight at Madison Square Garden just 18 days after the Sept. 11 attacks, or even baseball's decision to resume the 1989 Oakland-San Francisco World Series just a week after another earthquake had created widespread destruction in both cities. As calamitous as those events were, the vast majority of the population had not been affected by the tragedy. In Haiti, it has immutably affected an entire nation, perhaps forever.
Although Berto was born in the United States, both of his parents were born in Haiti, and after he was disqualified in the 2004 Olympic Trials he represented Haiti as a one-man Olympic boxing team in the Athens Games. He has since forged strong ties with the Island nation, and like every man, woman, and child in Haiti, the missing and dead include some of his closest relatives.
For several days Berto was unaware whether his sister Naomi and his young niece, who were in Port-au-Prince last Tuesday, were ailve or dead. (They survived, but were left homeless. An uncle who perished in the rubble of his collapsed home was not so fortunate. Even the building housing the office of the foundation Berto had established last year was flattened in the quake.)
Going through with the fight would have been so unthinkable that the only surprise is that Mosley didn't offer to do it first out of a spirit of fair play.
The timing of Monday's decision will give HBO and Golden Boy an opportunity to come up with a substitute main event should they opt to proceed with the Jan. 30. date. If they do, the hope here is that both entities will do the right thing by following Andre Berto's example and make sizable donations to the Haitian relief efforts.

Family First ! Andre Berto has made the only decision. It is impossible to measure the heartache and distress he must be enduring. I wish him, his family and the unfortunate many in Haiti my utmost hopes for the best and condolences for their tragic losses.

As horrible as it is....and it is horrible....the earthquake in Haiti has created an Opening for the match-up with the fighter Floyd has, this past year, thus far done his best to avoid: Shane Mosely. Floyd: You're either in or you're out. All eyes are on you.

Floyd don't need to fight no cheater like Mosely. that's on Shane for using illegal drugs. he's a cheat like Margarito wrapping plaster in his hands using drugs to fight de la Hoya. Floyd needs Olympic style testing to protect him. I don't see this fight as ever happening.

Ditto that Fe'Roz! Let the boxing eyes of March be on Floyd, Shane, Manny and Jos. The Idus Martias -- Ides of March -- would not have a eyeball chance in Hades. These two bouts -- held on different days -- would give professional boxing it big audence for two elite bouts held in the same month. Shane-Floyd would draw most of the American-based fans, and Manny-Jos would draw most of the world, in particularly South Asia, the Middle East and West Africa. And it won't do too badly in Europe because of the tons of Filipinos and West African. Holla!

YI hope we never get struck by a disaster like Haiti but it can happen anywhere. Bob Arum is hoping that Mosley vs Mayweather doesn't happen on March 13 cause he will owe Manny even more money.

The irony of this situation is that Shane may get exactly what he wanted (and deserves as welterweight champion) and Floyd must now refuse or accept the most public challenge he appears not to have wanted: Shane. The Lord indeed works in mysterious ways.

Regarding money owed, there's an old axiom that if you owe someone a little bit, they can walk away or write you off. If you owe them a lot, you're their partner. Think about single family homeowners. They get behind on their mortgage, they loss their homes. But if you owe the bank beaucoup bucks, they work with you. Now, I'm taking about ordinary banking and business. This is how we got to 'Too Big To Fail'. Of course, the same 'understanding' doesn't hold for loan sharks. Or the IRS.

First of all God Bless Haiti and all it's people that were touched in some kind of way, I could never even comprehend the pain or the suffering that they are enduring right now. Berto did the right thing, life is bigger than boxing, reality hits harder than any left hook or straight right.........Rumor has it that Mayweather and Mosley are fighting May 1st. Because outside of Mosley, Pac, and Williams there is no one that should oppose Floyd. Cotto is really damaged goods. Margarito should only be allowed to fight bareknuckled in backyards a la Kimbo Slice. Cintron hasn't looked good in awhile, he struggled against Lovemore N'dou. Bradley would be an okay match up and he is a big Jr Welterweight but he simply isn't ready yet. Let him fight Maidaina and Ortiz to see if he has the IT factor.

XD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Once again! Throw the daggers at Floyd! XD!!!!!!!!!!!! Man, this is SO frickin' funny as hell. There's noe where in the article mentionin' Floyd's name once. Nobody criticized Berto for steppin' out of the fight, and AGAIN like the examples with Pacquiao's politic plans, Pacquiao's choosin' date, and Pacquiao's blood "phobia" BS, I ask: if it was Floyd steppin' out cuz somethin' horrible happened in Gran Rapids, would anybody be so understandin' like they are now with Berto?...answer, the same one that answered all the fore-mentioned questions, an easy one: NO!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh man, anyways, goin' back to topic: Yeah, it appears Andre Berto (25-0) is not wantin' to fight Shane Mosley for what happened in his ancestors country. Now, Mosley is available to fight anybody that wants to get it. Floyd Mayweather Jr (40-0) has now the opportunity to win the WBA Welterweight Title on May 1st, which is a great date for biz (promotions and stuff), or he could take an easy opponent on March 13th (Cintron, Malignaggi, or Saul Alvarez, the undefeated Mexican kid that's growin' a huge fan base in Mexico) to try and gain more territory on the PPV circle, which would allow him to ask for a bigger purse against Pacquiao in the fall, or winter. One thing Floyd haters say that is completely True, and that is that it's Floyd's option now. Get it against Shane Mosley, or fight against Arum in PPV card on March 13th. The choice is his, and this is all I'm gonna say; cuz it's his choice, so, let's see what happens. Personally I would LOVE Mosley-Mayweather fight, to finally shut that big mouth of Mosley, even though in this fight I wouldn't be so sure in a Floyd Victory, like I was (And still am) with Pacquiao. Shane Mosley holds the biggest threat against Floyd, cuz of styles. Mosley can definitely find a way to beat Floyd, and boy do I accept it. I do accept it, no problem. Or, he could find an easy opponent top compete against Arum in PPV territory, which is understandable (By only smart fans, obviously). HOWEVER, if he fights in May and against a petty opponent, tehn I'll be definitely upset at him. That would be a dumb move, and one that I wouldn't understand. The choice is his........well, what the hell, the choice is ALWAYS his, it's not like he has a boss tellin' him who to fight, and makin' him get 27% of the PPV earnings, right? XD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's see what happens. Checkezzzz!!

If Mayweather and Mosley goes down it SHOULD push Clottey to leave it all in the ring on March 13. The world knows what Pac-man brings to the table but no one outside of the boxing circle knows who Clottey is without googling him. I know Clottey has to be doing back flips because he is right in the mix, he doesn't hold a title nor has he ever been P4P. All he has to do is stay focused and to not get sloppy. Props to Pacquiao for taking a big risk low rewards fight but I'm sure he is gonna be well compensated. On a side note how do they do PPV numbers overseas. I'm in Korea at the moment and PPV doesn't exist. I see all boxing and mma for free.

That was funny, low, but funny as heck about Margarito. OMG! NO! Margarito would be Kimbo Slice silly with gloves on. He'd kill him in a bareknuckled match in a backyard. Margarito ain't no joke I'm still waisting for the explanation of exact what was in his gloves. Elements and traces of plastic of Paris is not the same as a plastic of Paris cast. Coco butter mixed with lotion has elements and traces of plastic of Paris. I'm aware that you were kidding, but I just wanted to throw my 2 cents. I don't CSAC as far as you can throw a rock. Hehehehehehehehe, it's a custom I have with fighters that have perfect record. Floyd, Valero, and Berto, for courtesy, I write a side comment showin' their records. For Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Saul Alvarez and such I don't do it, cuz they don't have a perfect record, though they are undefeated. It's just a formality, that's all. Anyways, about the topic, dude, I year ya loud and clear. Yes, Floyd's choice is on the table, whatever he wants. If he fights Mosley, then I'm afraid the whole "Scareweather" thing wouldn't make sense, since he'll be fightin' the one who holds the biggest threat against him. So, let's see where he goes..............and as far as you being (98-0) XD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn!

Sugar much Shane broke-arse Mosley will fight a heavy and beat him too. Of course he'd talk a sever arse-thrashing from PacMan. The Sugarman is broke and needs the money. Divorcing his Asian wife did a money job on him. He is nothing like Tony Tubbs who is going to jail for drug usage and not paying child support on his 16 children. As for Ducky May, he's broke too. Between his bling, bling life style, the IRS and con man Willie, Lil' Floyd is hurting. But Big Floyd said that he'd not let his seed rumble with "that lil' Filipino." And nobody should blame him for protecting his "son." You can go to fighthype and read it for yourself. Family Mayweather admitted to ducking because of pure fright. Holla!

I'm a U.S. citizen and I live right in the mix with the Koreans. I guess the stations just pay a huge fee. Because everything is free from Boxing, MMA, WWE, etc. However the bad thing is sometimes they show them late or the next day. This year they only showed the Pac-man -Hatton fight. But every other HBO boxing matchg is shown, go figure. As far as Margarito who knows what were in those wraps we should find out soon enough once he applies for his license again . And you're right , Margarito would kill Slice, pour out a beer for him, and then bury him in that backyard. I've farted longer than Kimbo's bout against the guy with arched eyebrows.

As far as boxing in Korea, it doesn't get much love. The only boxers they know are Tyson and Ali. Boxing would be smart to hit the Asian market especially since Pride is gone and UFC still caters more to an American audience. They could make a fortune as long as they stay away from the freak shows of Japan. Damn they show PPV free in China too? Well actually I'm not surprised. I'm telling you all right now, if Mayweather fights Mosley, Mayweather has a lot of my respect back. I hope for the best for Berto and his family. Last year, we mourned more than ever. Take care of your family and get back in the ring 100% ready.

@SALT lover: If something horrible happened in Grand Rapids and Floyd pulled out of a fight, the public won't be so understanding because 1) Mayweather is ALWAYS looking for a way out of a risky fight 2) Mayweather has proven beyond all doubt that he has no integrity and cares about nobody but himself. And no, Mosley doesn't hold the biggest threat to Mayweather. That may have been the case three years ago, but not today. Mosley is an old man who will look every bit his age as he chases Mayweather around the ring. Should Mosley beat Mayweather, it would be an upset, although Mayweather is so mentally weak that he might wet his trunks on his way to the ring on fight night against Mosley.

Fast Eddie Lands In Germany, Says He'll Land The Shots To Upset Wlad
"An upset is possible in this as I could see Chambers boxing his way to a UD or SD, but I expect the much more likely scenario of a TKO in favor of Wlad in the middle to late rounds, in fact, I'd probably go with TKO in the 8th." --TSS reader Isaiah give Chambers a chance to get the upset win (photo by Jan Sanders)
