David Avila put up some exclusive footage of James Toney, the former middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and cruiswerweight champion, chatting up UFC honcho Dana White. The 41-year-old Toney (72-6-3)  says he wants to give MMA a try and approached White about doing that in UFC.

Don't know how he managed it, if he dressed up like a security guy or what, but Avila got footage of the Jan. 2-post UFC 108 in Las Vegas meeting.

Great stuff.

Check it out.

pETE STEWARD:  If Toney takes MMA seriously learns how block takes down etc and gets in great shape 205LBS or less he'll dangerous because no one in MMA history has better boxing skills head movement, punch accuracy, and he has great chin. He can do it but he's going to have to work real hard...Can you imagine J.T Dirty Boxing with his boxing skills and mean streak?....HE'LL KILL 'EM LOL!

Jason:  Nice coup Mr. Avila. As for Toney fighting MMA, not a good idea. He hasn't looked good in years and appears borderline punch-drunk, if not fully. It's a desperation move on his part. If a boxer is going to venture into that territory, the one asset he MUST possess is the ability to punch, because he's going to be at a serious disadvantage in the wrestling and ground departments. Unfortunately, Toney still carries a middleweight's punch, despite having a heavyweight's beard.

Alokwe:  He has a heavyweight's waistline as well. And yep, he is punch-drunk.

Robert Curtis:  Toney needs to fight on the underground somewhere. I can just see him driving around the country in a vintage pick-up truck with a pet orangutan. Toney will take on all comers in shipyards, slaughterhouses, behind truck stops, at biker meets, gun nut rallies and hillbilly hoedowns, in dogfighting pits. Before long, Toney won't be able to say his name without drooling or using ten extra syllables. @PETE STEWARD: I can just see a 205 pound James Toney soaring over the Hollywood hills on a flying pig. Can't you?

kountedout:  Of course if toney hits them he will definitely hurt them, also if they take him down does he or will he know enough how to defend himself, if he can then he can do well. but i dont feel it. James is 41..whew! If he wants to do it thats cool. i would never want to stop a man from making money. I dont support it though.

Robert Curtis:  Okay. That sarcasm rush made me dizzy. I've always been in awe of James Toney's skills and put him in a league above Hopkins and RJJ in recent history books. Toney won't rule MMA, but he'll fight well. Against a stand-up puncher, he'll win easily. On the ground, he'll have little chance. This is a last desperate effort for Toney. Like Jason says, Toney is borderline shot in both body and mind. At least they stop fights pretty fast in the UFC.

Real Talk LMAO:  I would love to see this! I see JT getting beatdown ground n pound style. MMA aint no joke slim, the ref doesn't break you up when you get tied up. Those leg kicks (smh) elbows, that's real fighting. I've seen boxers get that @$$ whooped in the streets. Boxers have got the best hands in the business bar none. We'll see. Dueces

Robert Curtis:  Toney won't go down in no ground and pound. He might get submitted, but that's it. Most MMA guys are overrated when it comes to genuine martial arts skills. The folks who are really good at the classic forms are too humble to get involved with an underpaid whorehouse like Dana White's UFC. Real Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, etc. are great training for soldiers, but those systems are meant to kill or disable on the battlefield, not to perform animal acts in front of the second class minds who enjoy the UFC. I give the most props to the UFC fighters who have highly competitive college wrestling backgrounds. If a wrestler with good experience gets a hold on Toney, goodnight, Irene.

Hanzo:  TOTALLY concur with every comment made above by Robert, excellent synopsis....

Hanzo:  Over the years JT has been 1 of my fave fighters to watch, recently, not so much. Oh, what could have been. Sean O'Grady once described him as a fighter with great old school defense, hard hitter, awesome combos, and, after boxing him several rounds if a fighter managed to land a shot on JT, you'd find out he has a chin of Granite. That was a few years back though. No doubt at one time, JT had it all. His victory over Vassily Jirov was freakin' awesome, much less his earlier victories in Middle and Super Middle.

Isaiah:  I guess old James Toney had to think of something. No one in boxing wants to see him slip anymore so he may as well go down and try and perform in front of the retarded UFC fans. Just maybe Toney has slipped enough for one of those MMA idiots to try and strangle him out because there's no way their subpar skills are going to hold up trading with him. We all know that Toney with smaller gloves would spell D-E-A-D-L-Y against everyone there. Go ahead you UFC fools. Try and charge at Toney and he'll hit you with and uppercut and have you unconscience on the canvass before you can breath. I'm looking in Brock Lesnar's direction...

Real Talk @ Robert Curtis:  I say butter, you say Parkay ! Ground n Pound is when one person gets taken down ala wrestling/jui jitsu etc. Then gets the s___ beat out of'em while he's down there. Yeah it's bums in UFC just like in boxing. It's some lethal cats in thee too. You sleepin on MMA. All forms of fighting work. No style is superior, it's the practitioner. It's a lot more you got to watchout for in MMA. Dueces

J Smutts:  JT is not anyone that you would break your company's rules or promote his first fight on PPV for so it would have to go as such: Dana White would have to leave the match under MMA rules with BJJ, TKD, Wrestling and any other discipline still being legal and you would use this on one for one of their Spike TV telecast on a UFC Fight Night. I wouldn't even bloat the marketing budget for this one unless you were 100% sure that your UFC fighter is going to smoke Toney and make it look as if the Boxers don't stand a chance against UFC fighters. That would be a harsh blow to boxing too if Toney gets smoked in the first minute with a guilotine or a triangle as soon as he hits the floor.

boxer:  MMA is different but Ive never seen someone get the crap beat out of them as in boxing. They stop the fights quickly in MMA. None of those guys has a chin. Boxers in the elite level can hit and can take a hit. Why do you think so many boxers die every year. They are real warriors and won't quit. MMA is all about wrestling. They tap out. I dont think a guy like Toney would ever tap out.
Friday Jan 15, 2010 06:50:14 PM
Robert Curtis:  @Real Talk. No biggie argument here. Boxing rules with the hands. But everything else is up to the genius of the practioner. If Toney can learn to duck low to avoid a shoot and lift his leg to roll with kicks, most fights won't make it to the ground. But even on the ground, Toney is a genius. What he don't know, he'll invent.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
