Pavlik Must Win, And Look Good Doing So

By Ron Borges

For everyone involved with Kelly Pavlik BUT Kelly Pavlik, what is important Saturday night is that he A) get into the ring and B) leave it with his WBC and WBO middleweight title belts still in his possession. Anything else is a bonus.

But for the long-absent Pavlik, who has fought only once in the last 10 months due to an assortment of setbacks, much more is needed. To defeat light-punching Miguel Espino is expected but not satisfactory. This is not a case of following the philosophy of Hall of Fame trainer George Benton, who used to tell his fighters in that Barry White baritone, “Win this fight. Look good next fight.’’

In the end it is winning that is most important in boxing but after a year in which Pavlik has suffered with a bad knuckle and a serious staph infection and been accused of ducking the former welterweight champion Paul Williams winning is only the beginning Saturday night. There is also the question of how he wins.

“Winning is not enough,’’ Pavlik (35-1 31 KO) said this week. “I need to be dominant and I need to be impressive. I know what the mission is and I have every intention of completing it.’’

Top Rank, the Bob Arum-owned promotional company that handles Pavlik, has one mission – which is to get the guy back in the ring before the world forgets his name. Pavlik’s mission is far different. It is not just to win. It is to remind the world of who they thought he was before the night Bernard Hopkins undressed him in public for 12 humiliating rounds, beating him up before beating him down.

There are some in boxing who whisper he has never been the same and won’t be. Among them is someone who knows Hopkins well, his former promoter Lou DiBella. DiBella is no fan of Hopkins but he feels he left Pavlik adrift and caused the long walkabout that has gone on since.

“I think he ruined Pavlik and I know he ruined (Felix) Trinidad,’’ DiBella said. “He took them from the pinnacle and mentally beat them to a pulp. In general, fighting Bernard Hopkins is a career destroyer.

“He embarrassed Trinidad. He had to be saved by his father. He was never the same. He sent Kelly Pavlik back to Youngstown after he appeared potentially to be the next great middleweight champion. Kelly went from having a ton of confidence to having none after what Hopkins did to him. None! It was the kind of beatdown that leaves you confused about who you are…or who you thought you were.’’

Arum hears such things and goes off like a roman candle, insisting Pavlik’s only problems have been the knuckle injury that resulted in a staph infection and the poor way he handled treating it and its rehab. Other than that, Arum says with his usual bombast, he’s FINE!!!

“I don’t care what people think,’’ Arum said recently. “The kid was injured and he didn’t take care of it. It wasn’t some hangover from the Hopkins fight. It wasn’t some fear of Paul Williams. He couldn’t make a fist!’’

Although it is barely two weeks removed from when he was scheduled to fight Williams for a second time and had to pull out, Pavlik now allegedly can make a fist and intends to use it. For Arum and trainer Jack Loew all that is really necessary is that Pavlik get comfortable in the ring again and emerge still the holder of his portions of the middleweight title.

But Pavlik looks at Espino and sees a guy who can’t punch and who although ranked No. 3 in the world should not belong in the same ring with him if he, Pavlik, is who he thinks he is.

“The hand?’’ said Pavlik. “We’ve worked through that and it’s in the past. The problem with the hand was time-consuming. After the first surgery we thought we would be ready to go. After I got the stitches out it opened up again and pus started coming it. They did a re-culture and an MRI and it got worse.

“Finally we were on a new antibiotic and that wasn’t doing the job so we got another surgery. After that everything was fine. After it went away we got a new (bad) reaction from the antibiotics that put me in the hospital for four days with a very serious problem.

“At the end of the day we had two major surgeries within two months and the tendons were coming out of the hand. I had therapy to get movement back in the finger. But we wanted to fight. That’s the main thing.

“People may think I was ducking Paul Williams but that doesn’t bother me because some people know absolutely nothing about boxing. They don’t know how the sport works or what goes on in the sport. We were told we had to defend the title (or be stripped of it). So the people that said he’s now fighting two weeks later don’t understand the story and have no idea what was behind it.

“No matter the talk, I feel I have to go out there, especially after the layoff, and look good. I need a dominant win.’’

Pavlik believes much of the criticism he has recently received are because he is from the Midwest, which in recent years has produced few champions and a lot of guys with inflated records and minimal talent. Many saw him the same way until he stopped Edison Miranda and Jermain Taylor. Suddenly he was transformed from overly protected Midwesterner with a phony record to next great middleweight champion.

After Hopkins, at best it seems the truth lies in between. How far in between is the question, one he intends to try and answer with a “dominant’’ victory over Espino.

But many a fighter has lost himself in the pursuit of dominance, trying so hard for the spectacular that they are undone. That, most of all, Kelly Pavlik cannot afford. A lackluster performance could be explained away by the long layoff and the recent medical problems. But a defeat would be harder to erase and much harder to overcome.

“It really makes me want to cry,’’ Arum said of the questioning of Pavlik’s heart or desire to face Williams. “They have absolutely no factual basis for what they are saying. Like the genius who trains Williams claiming that Kelly was faking the injury. When I hear that I feel so embarrassed for the sport.

“I’m 78 and I’ve put my whole life into this sport and to hear morons like that talk when they have no basis for what they are saying really makes me sad.’’

Not as sad as Kelly Pavlik might make him if he doesn’t deliver Saturday night.

Jason:  I disagree with DiBella's assertion regarding Pavlik. First of all, they fought at a catchweight of 170 pounds, a terrible weight for Pavlik. He is simply not the same fighter when he ventures up there (he didn't look great in the Taylor rematch at 164). And second, Hopkins did not brutalize Pavlik. Sure, he peppered him with some good shots and outboxed him, but it was not my definition of a beat-down. In short, Pavlik was taken to school by a crafty technician at an ill-suited weight. This was more Byrd-Tua than Trinidad-Reid. Pavlik does need a good performance though. Inactivity and the perception that he ducked Williams have damaged his reputation, at least temporarily.

Master Snake :  Is it just me or is Pavlik's demeanor changing into that of a closet drinker with numerous secrets and even more excuses. He'll probably get past this TV celebrity he's fighting tomorrow. But his next opponent should be world-class. Well, then again, take a look at the state of middleweights. Espino will probably be the caliber of fighter Kelly will face for some time.

RIVERSIDE:  pavlik will be back, he fought miranda who hits like the kick of a mule, he fought taylor twice and lost to hopkins on hopkins savy boxing skills and now people are saying he ducked williams, does not make sense, his injury sounds legitimate, i think pavlik would have ko williams, williams is not savy and is easy to hit, he would be in pavlik range, i still disagree pavlik fight with espino is on pay per view, i won't buy it

Fe'Roz :  All due respect to Bob Arum but he is after all Pavlik's promoter. What else could he say. Until proven otherwise, I think DiBella is spot on. Losing the way Tito and Kelly did to Bernard is career changing. In Tito's case even worse. It was for all intents and purposes career ending. His defeat was humiliating; his loss devastating. It was almost as if he never fought at the elite level. Pavlik's was not as bad but the timing was much worse. At least Tito had a career as a world beater. Kelly was just getting started before Bernard exposed him. It has to be bad enough to know that you have lost everything you have earned thus far but losing the way he did is even more problematic. His flaws (and/or habits as Roach would say) were revealed for all to see. So beyond the appearance of invincibility and the confidence that goes with it, Pavlik now knows what we all know. And more importantly, what every and any good trainer and fighter will know going forward. Strategies will be developed to exploit weaknesses; weaknesses that had otherwise been the private domain of Kelly's camp. This is not to suggest that they will and or can be exploited tomorrow night.....but then beating Michael Jennings didn't exactly show us that the same Miguel Cotto had returned from his fight with Margarito. Nor will beating Espino. For now, I am watching and waiting.

IRISH KID :  You could not pay me to see this fight . Kelly the joke Pavlik is becoming more like J.T more& more every day fights nobody's & wants us to pay to see it

Porkupine:  People are quick to jump on the "Pavlik's scared of Williams" bandwagon but he's a damn good fighter and waaaaaay too young to be written off! The truth is probably this: His hand is not 100%, but he was told he'll lose those titles if he does not defend them, enter Miguel Espino who should get a good honest midwestern beating. Paul Williams is hittable and has never faced a puncher on Pavlik's level, making it a 50-50 fight.

#1 PacFan "Pacquiao #3 on ATG list"Standing firm!:  If I'm saying an easy win for KP against the volume punching Williams, you're sure to hear an even more impressive win against Espino from me. Pavlik with this win will send out a message for all the non-believers and the one's saying he is ducking Williams. I expect an easy knockout victory in the 4th round for Pavlik IF his hands are healthy like he says they are.

dp69:  little by little im starting to loose respect for the ghost...unless he impress me and fight toothpick williams....holla back!!!

Jason:  Regarding Pavlik, the PERCEPTION is that he's ducking Williams, fairly or unfairly. Only he and his team knows the truth. Personally, I don't think he is. After all, he's fought a pre-concussion Jermain Taylor twice, Edison Miranda (at the time, Miranda had only one loss (Abraham in a war in which he broke AA's jaw) and was considered ultra-dangerous and favored), and Hopkins at a catchweight of 170. That said, it's a disgrace that this fight is on PPV at a clip of $40. This is the WRONG way to re-ingratiate himself with boxing fans. I don't know if HBO precludes him from fighting on ESPN or Versus, but that's the platform in which he should be fighting a guy like Espino. I'll be watching the Saints-Cowboys game and will read about the result here.

PETE STEWARD:  Pavlik Should've taken the rest of the year off instead fighting this bum and DUCKING WILLIAMS so close to X MAS NOT ON HBO but still on PPV? with MMA shows for FREE on Network T.V the Kelly name and fame is a Ghost of what it was after the Talyor wins and B-HOP Loss THANK YOU BOB ARUM!
Friday Dec 18, 2009 06:53:26 PM
Yuvie:  I like or liked Pavlik but he's slowly losing his credibility. I don't think he's avoiding Williams. I just think those around him think that Williams would be a dangerous fight for a fragile Pavlik. He shoud get through this other guy (I don't even know who he is if I'm being honest) and face Wiliams next. Pavlik/Williams is an attractive fight and a win over Williams would get Pavlik some of that respect back. Otherwise, Williams will be a fine replacement to take the mantle of Middleweight champion of the world.

SALT lover:  The only so-called message Pavlik will send out there with a KO Victory over Espino is: "Phew! Now that things are more comfortable for me, after watching Williams take a lot of unneccessary punches, now I'm willing to fight him, but before that? NO WAY! He was the ghost". That's what the so-called message Pavlik will send after avoiding fightin' 'The Punisher'. I wish that this is True, and now Pavlik's "hand problems" are solve, and he gets willin' to fight Paul Williams. And then we'll see how "overrated" Paul Williams really is. Pavlik by KO......I wish. Latezzzzzzzzzz!

SALT lover@dp69:  I'm with ya on that.

Isaiah:  The only thing that this will prove is that Pavlik still has some fight left in him. Hopefully this is just a warmup for him and not turning into a pattern as his other 2 title defenses show against the "GREATS", Gary Lockett and Marco Antonio Rubio. This is on the same level as those guys, although technically Rubio could fight a little bit, but NO ONE could tell against the "Ghost" when Rubio was there to just collect a check. This is a really dumb move for Pavlik's team to put this on PPV. This is the kind of bull that gives people an exscuse to give MMA a shot. Pavlik and his handlers need to cut this greedy nonsense out! Build up to it! Save the PPV slot for a worthy opponent such as Paul Williams! Even if I was from Youngstown, Ohio, I would still NOT be buying this piece of junk! I hope I'm making a point!
Friday Dec 18, 2009 11:49:00 PM
the Roast:  Pavlik will stop the overmatched guy in six to eight. I will probably be dull. Should be on ESPN. I wont pay for this crap. I'll see the highlights or not. Get a tune up win and make a real fight Pavlik.

#1 PacFan "Pac #3 on ATG list!":  @Salt, how was Pavlik avoiding Williams when they already signed and dated but postponed TWICE due to a hand injury. If Pavlik never even negotiated with Williams then I believe he was ducking him. I understand Williams for taking on another opponent because he can't wait on Pavlik too long. But that thing you said about Pavlik willing to fight him now that he was taking punishment from a nobody is bullcrap. There's only one ducker in the game and that's your idol....
Saturday Dec 19, 2009 03:17:08 AM
SALT lover@#1Pacfan:  Man, the contrdiction that flows aroun' you is incredible. You call that obvious thing bullcrap? OK, so Pavlik postpones it cuz he supposedly has hand problems, and just when Williams signs to fight Martinez, and then ALL OF A SUDDEN his hands are feelin' a little better? XD!!!!!!!!! OK, "bullcrap, yeah, yeah. And about Floyd, don't call him a ducker anymore, cuz he already agreed to terms to fight YOUR idol, and the big annuuncement is just aroun' the corcer, your idol's promoter and your idol's trainer. If it was Floyd who did the same thing Pavloik, you would've said that Floyd was not duckin' Pacquiao like you are sayin' noe of Pavlik? NO! That IS bullcrap, and a real one.
Saturday Dec 19, 2009 09:58:23 AM
SALT lover@#1Pacfan:  And by the way, don't call Floyd my idol. He's not my idol, like Pacquiao is to you. I criticize Floyd sometimes, and I have seen flwas in him and criticized him, unlike you, that treats Pacquiao like he's perfect. There's a difference between being favorite fighter, and being an idol.

#1 PacFan "Pac #3 on ATG list!":  @Salt, relax man I didn't think my post would get you all shookin up. Like I said, you can have a great point if Williams called out Pavlik but said he couldn't fight because he had a hand injury. Remember when Floyd called out Shane? What did Shane say? He said he had a tooth problem and that he was going to take a vacation. If Shane agreed to the fight but later found out the tooth problem then I would have a defense for Shane. But Shane never agreed at all. Pavlik signed but due to the injury(staph is some serious sh*t) he wasn't sure how fast it was going to heal. Williams camp later found a different opponent. So May is not your idol?LMAO, he has flaws you say. what are they?
Saturday Dec 19, 2009 07:29:21 PM
#1 PacFan "Pac #3 on ATG list!":  @Salt, about Floyd's agreement on the terms of the fight is all verbal. The fight is not finalized because of Floyd who only verbally agreed to the fight in public. It was obvious Mayweather knew that trying to push for the March date was going to be difficult for Team Pac but surprisingly they didn't budge. Now that Floyd is stalling to sign the contract it may jepordize the fight itself because it might not give Roach enough time for training camp.
Saturday Dec 19, 2009 07:39:05 PM
SALT lover@#1Pacfan:  I'm always relaxed, I just reposted wakin' up, and I realized the mistakes later......... anyways,: PLEASE! You're talkin' as if the signin' part was the most critical part XD!!! The fightr is being made, man. Accept it. Both of the camps have agreed with the date and money (THIS was the hardest part, not the sign), and they are both on the verge of makin' the announcement, which both Arum and Roach confirmed. If the fight was not on the verge of makin' it happen, you think Arum would be watin'; time flyin' to The Philippines, Las Vegas, Dallas, and all those places? Floyd is not "stallin'" nothin'. If he signin' the contract was such a big deal to jeopardize the fight, Arum would've said somethin' in public. Accept it man. The hardest part of the negotiation is not the simple act of signin', it was gettin' Floyd and Arum together, and that part is over now. And Roach said the trainin' camp will be ten weeks. And about Pavlik, after he wins tonight, let's see if he agrees to fight Paul Williams.
Saturday Dec 19, 2009 07:53:04 PM
SALT lover@#1Pacfan:  Floyd has many flaws I completely disagree with: like when he lost to Castillo the first time. Like when he didn't fought True competition at 140lbs; 147lbs is debateful, so is 154lbs, but at 140lbs all he fought was the punchin' bag with legs like Arturo Gatti (I deeply apologize if anybody gets offended, but it's the Truth). Like also the interviews he gives, where he dodges questions, and I'm not just talkin' Brian Kenny, or that dude, Rugged Man, but many other independent interviews, like when he brings his undefeated record to prove he's the best sayin': "LEt me ask you something, did Pacquiao has losses?" The other person says "Yes", and he goes off respoindin', "OK, then", as if that proves anything; especially when he said he was greater than 'Sugar' Ray Robinson, which I COMPLETELY disagree. Like when he throws money to the camera, how pathetic that is. Also the entourage he has, that they do almost everythin' for him, but I mean simple little things anybody can do, like take off his shirt XD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm die-hard fan of his, cuz he has the most complete style in boxin', the most beautiful, and most sophisticated boxin' school in the business, I love when people hate him and get irritated when he wins, and all that, but he's not my idol. I don't ALWAYS defend him, like you do to Pacquiao. If somebody here criticized Floyd, I usually let them. And if I see him in the streets, I'm not gonna go run to him askin' for a pic, or autograph or stuff like that.

brownsugar:  Pavlik bombs out Espino in 5,.. Espino was game,.. trading and landing good punches till uppercuts from Pavlik softened him up in the 4th and sent him to the canvas,.. in the 5th,.. Espino dove right back into Pavs grill,... trading with Pavs,.. only to be uppercutted back to the canvas again,.. Espino's corner tossed in the towell for their brave warrior who literally left it all in ring... both men were bruised up... a slug fest from beginning to end,. with Pavs landing the better punches... it ended as it should have,.. with Espino having the dubious distinction of loosing to Manfredo by UD on the contenders series... Pavs is still dangerous,.. and still gets hit.. overall a very good win,.. but a win that's only good for bolstering his self confidence..and the former staph infected hand wasn't an issue...will be interesting to see what the future brings for Youngstowns finest... surely every decent Middleweight in the world will be gunning for him now...
