Jermain Taylor To Fight On, Dibella Bids Him Adieu

By George Kimball

CHICAGO --  Sometimes even more than its eponymous president himself, Jermain Taylor was the veritable face of DiBella Entertainment.

He might not have been Lou DiBella's first world champion -- Bernard Hopkins was - but he was the first he'd developed from square one. DiBella had signed Taylor straight out of the Olympics and promoted his entire career, watched a kid who'd never had a pro fight become a man who won the undisputed middleweight championship of the world, and if their personal relationship wasn't exactly father-son, it was at the very least uncle-nephew, and when Lou said he '"loved" Jermain, you believed him.

This is a sport in which the term "bloodsucking promoter" often seems redundant, but when DiBella severed his relationship with Taylor on a cold Friday afternoon in Chicago yesterday, it was a move borne of conscience alone. Rather than be a party to what he considered the "unnecessary risk" of Taylor's continuing to box, DiBella walked away and left more than half a million dollars on the table.

Ask yourself this: How many other promoters would have done the same?

It has been clear since the night of October 17 that DiBella would never promote another Taylor fight.  After sitting up all night watching his fighter wander in and out of consciousness in a Berlin hospital, the promoter extracted a promise from Taylor that he would hang up his gloves. No announcement was made at that time because DiBella wanted to give the guy who had once been the middleweight champ the opportunity to retire gracefully, on his own terms, and with any explanation he wanted to offer.

The two have not met face to face since they parted in Germany. DiBella flew back to the states. Jermain Taylor stayed behind. It was announced that he wanted to spend a week touring Europe with his wife. The truth of the matter is that the German doctors who treated Taylor for the concussion administered by Arthur Abraham warned that it would be dangerous for him to get on an airplane.

Make of that what you will. Once Taylor got to the hospital that night, the staff neurologists -- as opposed to the boxing buffs with kit bags who pass for "ringside phsyicians" in that country -- were sufficiently concerned that they put him on a round-the-clock watch. It is our understanding that Taylor underwent multiple MRIs. We know he passed the last one, else he would not have been released. But what about the others?

By the time they parted company in Berlin, DiBella's mind was already made up that this was it.  If Taylor ever boxed again, it would not be under the aegis of his company. This understanding was as clear to Taylor that morning as it was to DiBella.

In the nearly two months since, there had been increasing rumblings emanating from Little Rock that Taylor was wavering on his pledge.  The rumors were a matter of sufficient concern that in Atlantic City last Saturday night, DiBella found himself huddled together with Taylor advisor Al Haymon as they tried to figure out a means of heading off the comeback plans without embarrassing Taylor.

The matter was already producing a schism within the camp. Manager Ozell Nelson, who had returned to the corner as trainer after the tenures of Patrick Burns and Emanuel Steward, was working with Taylor in Arkansas, and of course the Little Rock homeys who comprise Jermain's inner circle down there were foursquare behind their man -- for pretty much the same reasons that Muhammad Ali's entire entourage, with the exception of Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, who had walked away, not only abetted but encouraged Ali's participation in that ill-fated 1980 fight against Larry Holmes.

On the way from O'Hare to downtown Chicago yesterday, the wife of one of Taylor's closest friends confirmed to me that Jermain had decided to keep boxing and would reaffirm his place in the ongoing "Super Six"  super-middleweght tournament, and hours later, Taylor repeated that intention to another website.

So by five o'clock Friday in Chicago, DiBella was making an announcement of his own -- that he was out, recusing himself as Taylor's promoter. When he had signed him out of the 2000 Olympics, DiBella had promised the fighter that he would leave the game with his faculties intact, and he had promised the same thing to Jermain's mother two months ago in Berlin. Now that that prospect had assumed proportions of an unacceptable risk, DIBella felt that he could not in good conscience function as an enabler.

It should probably be noted that even today, Taylor would probably be DiBella Entertainment's most marketable client, and that by walking away right now, Lou DiBella is out between $500,000 and $600,000 he stood to collect just for passing 'Go.'

Obviously, DiBella could use the money, but after what he has seen he seems to feel that he can't comfortably condone the notion of Jermain Taylor continuing to box.

All of us, of course, have seen Taylor lose four of his last five fights and get knocked out in three of them. But what we haven't seen is Taylor's alarming behavior in the locker room once he regained consciousness -- behavior so erratic and so indicative of possible frontal lobe damage that an ambulance was summoned.

And what we haven't seen, either, are the results of the several MRIs administered in the hospital that night. While that information is shrouded in medical confidentiality issues, Taylor's post-concussive state should be a matter of extreme concern for whatever jurisdiction considers licensing him again.

As of last night, Al Haymon planned to fly to Arkansas in a last-ditch effort to discourage Taylor's comeback plans. If he is unsuccessful, it will be interesting to see whether he follows DiBella out the door.

The current Super Six schedule calls for Taylor to fight Andre Ward in April. No site has been named, but it is a reasonable assumption that a pairing of two Americans would take place in the United States. Whichever commission winds up with this one in its lap needs to take a long, hard look at the situation.

And so, for that matter, does Showtime. Before this tournament even began, we had expressed our reservations about the whole concept of a "knockout bonus" and suggested that it could lead to something like this.  We'd even noted that if they were going to award one point or a knockout, why not two for putting the opponent in the hospital, and three if you managed to kill him.

That had been intended as sarcasm, but now we may get a chance to find out.

As the creators, sponsors, and bankrollers of of this enterprise, the people at Showtime are uniquely posited in this case. If Jermain Taylor can pass a brain scan in March, even the most circumspect  boxing commission might legally have difficulty denying him a license, but Showtime can, and should, go one step further.

The network can't demand that the Germans hand over confidential medical information, for instance, but they can, and should, take Jermain Taylor aside and ask that he obtain the neurological reports from that night, and make the information available to them. They could, and should, make that a condition of his continued participation in the tournament.

And it they don't, they must share in the responsibility for the consequences.

TEXT OF DiBELLA ENTERTAINMENT's OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON JERMAIN TAYLOR:

I have just been informed though numerous press reports that Jermain Taylor has elected to continue his participation in The Super Six: World Boxing Classic tournament, and will face Andre Ward in April. It is with a heavy heart, but strong conviction, that I will recuse myself and DiBella Entertainment as Jermain’s promoter.

“Jermain’s career has been outstanding, and it has been a pleasure and honor to promote him. His victories against Bernard Hopkins remain the highlights of my career as a promoter. Jermain is not only a great fighter, but a good and decent man with a wonderful family. It is out of genuine concern for him and his family that I am compelled to make this decision.

“I informed him, as I do all my contracted fighters, that my goal was to help his secure financial stability for his family, maximize his potential, and leave our unforgiving sport with his health intact.

“It is my belief that the continuation of Jermain’s career as an active fighter places him at unnecessary risk. While he is undoubtedly capable of prevailing in future bouts, I cannot, in conscience, remain involved given my assessment of such risk.

“I wish Jermain all the best in his future endeavors. All of us at DiBella Entertainment hold Jermain close to our hearts and consider him and his family part of our family. We wish him Godspeed and continued health.

                              -- Lou DiBella

rudy:  Jermain needs to listen to his team, Lou and Haymon know what they are saying. Please retire, be there for your family and kids. I understand a fighter wants to go out on his own terms, but as the piece stated...dont let your next fight be the next Ali-Holmes.

Radam G -- suspiciously as heck:  I know rotten fish when I smell it. No praises to Lou Dibella. I been around boxing my entire years on earth, and probably in a former life -- if there is such. Dibella is walking away from Jemaine Taylor not in concern -- but interest and grandstanding. He is beating the other horses out the shoo (or whatever in the heck it is called), Dibella knows that JT is going to have a very hard time getting a commission to let him back in the ring, so Dibella is fronting being humane. I and every other boxer have seen this act a million times from promoters. The fight doctor FP was legit about GOAT Ali, the fight promoter is full of s__t! Holla!
Friday Dec 11, 2009 07:46:17 PM
deepwater:  its Jermains choice if he passes all his medicals.I hope the commission makes him have anothe Mri. If their is any residual hemorrage or atrophy it should up and he will be suspended. If he gets an all clear then its up to him if he wants to continue on.His old trainer who is back in his life is definatly encouraging him to continue, think he has some hard feelings about being replaced earlier on? Jermain has some pride and it would be battle of olympians in his mind,he might get lucky but probably wont.He should hang them up or go out with a hometown fight against a light hitting bum.
Friday Dec 11, 2009 09:49:07 PM
MisterLee:  Yeah JT, having top level comp should be over for at least a year. Andre ward will knock this bum out in 8 rounds fo' sure! Holler!

Tony Cardinale:  Lou DiBella is one of boxing's great, great, guys. Unlike the type of scumbag promoter who only considers what is in it for himself, Lou is doing what is truly right, and by his exampe trying to have Jermain follow his lead. Think about is Jermain: Why subject yourself to permanent damage when Lou got you paid more money than all but a handfull of boxers have ever made in thier careers? I hope you read these posts Jermain, do you need money so bad that you are willing to risk your life? If not, why? To prove you are a man? We already know that from your brillliant career. A win against Hopkins at his best, what more do you have to prove to us?
Friday Dec 11, 2009 11:21:21 PM
peter:  Kudos to Dibella. Well done.
Friday Dec 11, 2009 11:38:12 PM
the Roast:  This is how it goes in boxing. The fighter refuses to aknowledge what is plain to see. Its over Jermain. Move on with your life. Think about the long haul. MisterLee, no way in hell JT makes it to the 8th with Ward. If Ward lets his hands go the way he did in his last fight, its over as soon as Ward lands flush to the chin. One or two rounds at most. Dont get yourself hurt JT. You had a nice run. You made some money, you won some belts, its time to hang 'em up.
Friday Dec 11, 2009 11:55:40 PM
Keith:  If Jermain doesn't listen he will die in his next bout...I just get the feeling that he cannot take any more punishment in boxing. I hope that he retires...he has nothing to prove. Living and being with your family is more important than a sport!
Friday Dec 11, 2009 11:59:27 PM
Isaiah:  It's been a very nice career for Jermaine, but enough is enough. He's had a very nice career, but time to do something else. There's no shame in moving on to something else, because you never know when it will be your last day in this world. I hope, truly, that the next article about Jermaine doesn't say something like, Andre Ward mourns with Jermaine's family after accidental ring death. Walk away now Jermaine. Something just doesn't feel right...

Smiley C:  I buy what deepwater is saying fo' sure!

brownsugar:  one of Lou's fighters (Leavander) died in 2005,.. Lou wanted to quit,.. but Leavanders family encouraged him to continue,.. (at least thats what I read at another news site),.. but it's the decent thing to do,.. I'm glad he's taking a public stand,.. and was considerate enough to talk to Jermaine first,.. unlike a lot of promoters who announce everything on the internet first,.. Lou can rest easy because he did the right thing,.. I hope Taylor does the right thing and reconsiders,..because Ward has too many angles,.. he'll connect hard and often once he gets his momentum going,.. then he has to worry about not causing serious damage at the same time,.. That's a very uncomfortable thought to have before facing an opponent,.. but Ward will "do his job" like all the other pro's do,..he'll keep punching untill the job is done...

o.rivera:  Please Jermain Retire with your health intact, You fought a brave career and a gentleman in the ring and outside of the ring. Retire now an enjoy your family. Thanks for all the great fights you gave us. Otilio.

Frank Z:  dibella just gained a lot of my respect.
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 10:50:50 AM
DaveB:  It's up to Showtime to make a stand and protect Jermaine from himself. I don't know if they would get in contractual trouble if they yanked him out of there but they need to for his own safety. That man is going to have a short life. He has taken brutal knockouts not just beatings.
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 11:19:32 AM
Radam G 0 ain't buy diz have-mercy jive:  Wow! These fakers -- Dibella and Haymon -- seeking luv and respect ought to quit. They are leaving JT because they know the deal. JT is going to have to sue -- just as Holyfield did -- to stay in the legal mayhem game. Dibella and Showtime remind me of two fallen angels who have join the forces of hades. They are bullspitting to get back into heaven and then try to take over. From the jump, JT should not have ever been in that Super 666 jive -- my bad! I mean Super 6 Tournament. Putting him in that tournament, especially against King Arthur, was throwing to the wolves. Froch has knocked him crazy for about a year of need rest. They know ahead of time that nobody wants to see JT box anymore, so they have abandoned him and is slickly badmouthing him. This is how the game works. Privately, these suckas could have paid JT off to quit boxing for a year or two or forever. See when the powers that be did this same things to Terry Norris, Norris sued and is living comfortably with his millions that he got from crooked promoters -- Don King is one -- and commissions such as Nevada, California, Texas and New Jersey. I can't name the alphabet sanctioning organizations because they paid me for a wrong and fixed it with the court judges, where I will stay da fudge quiet about it. Ain't messing up my money. My lips are sealed. And as I said, Holly sued them to get back in the game. Holla!

Jason:  "Dibella is walking away from Jemaine Taylor not in concern -- but interest and grandstanding." I hate to be a cynic, but I think this is an accurate statement.
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 01:20:16 PM
Yuvie:  Taylor won't beat Ward next, so that pretty much puts him out of the tourney. However, I don't think Ward will brutalize or knock him out. At this point, I really can't see where Taylor goes from here. He really does look like damaged goods. I'd say the best fight at this stage in his career is against someone like Dirrell. That'd probably be quite a even fight.
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 01:37:53 PM
Straight Right:  Sounds like the truth comin from RG today! JT ws hung out to dry against a killer like King A, only 6 months after Froch separated him from his senses. I wouldn't be surprised to see Dirrell knock him out, though I hope we don't have to see that fight.
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 04:11:19 PM
bill major:  mister lee, your the bum.obviously never had a fight in your life or at least one in which you had a competetive opponent. dont disrespect the guy .i never was a fan of his but to call this former champion or any fighter a bum... f#$ken arm chair quarterback
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 04:13:00 PM
Jason:  Andre Ward looked spectacular against Kessler. I truly fear for Taylor's safety against him. I had hoped that he would bow out of the tournament. Jermain has no chance to win (outside of a miracle), and an almost certain chance of being knocked unconscious, again. They should reserve a hospital room for him that night, because he'll be sleeping there.
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 04:57:50 PM
Radam G -- _____:  Bum in boxing is not a hostile word. It is just a jivy throw-away word for affection. Boxers always call each other bums, punch drunk, punchy and bumpy in fun. But literally bum also means a B-plus to B-minus fighter. Not a C, D, F, or stiff and grave dwellers. People are a bit too hypersenitiive about shooting the jive. Holla!
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 05:04:31 PM
MIsterLee:  William Minor is a keyboard warrior for sure! Please tell me your fighting pedigree so I can really bow down to your fighting accomplishments vs. JT's for sure! Pple getting touchy for sure! Here's the downlow: 1.) You don't need to be fighting champion to be a boxing analyst, or if Max Kellerman, Larry Merchant, or Jim Lampley have this hidden fighting pedigree, tell me! 2.) Great champions DON'T necessarily make great boxing analysts: Angelo Dundee, Roy Jones Jr., and/or Lennox Lewis 3.) Have SOME fighting experience can help in understanding the game from the inside: Radam the Humble G, Emmanuel Steward, Teddy Atlas, F-lo Writa' (Frank Lotierzo), Pete Steward, SOHK, Master Snake, B-sug fo' sure! As for you William Minor, get a life! Go suck on a monkey's thumb! I never overreact to what YOU say, know why? B/c wise as you are, I don't give a SH*T about what you say! Go keyboard battle with someone who cares! Holler!
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 05:10:41 PM
MisterLee:  by saying SOME i don't mean to degrade these warrior at all fo' sure! And Freddie Roach never had a full career as he had medical problems earlier in his fight career that stopped him, and though he never was this great champion, he's second to none in his eye for the game for' sure! Pc!
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 05:12:37 PM
bill major:  does that make him a bum in your eyes miss lee? you do degrade them with that crap. go f#$$k yourself .im sure your extent in the ring is here lol loser .
Saturday Dec 12, 2009 11:46:31 PM
MisterLee:  Wow , a real keyboard tapper! You have impressed me with your boxing knowledge (not). Namecalling and bullying are what inferior posters on this site revert too, I can understand. So you're this fat 40 year old with a pot belly and yelling at his wife gonna try to bully me? hahaha... what's your fighting pedigree? Just curious, since you feel it's a requirement to post on this site. Whats your fighting pedigree WIlliams Minor? Jermaine Taylor is a bronze medalist who has sacked a bunch of bums in order to get a title shot (okay I might miss a name or two on his way up), then he earned his title shot as a B+ fighter agst the "right" figher Bhop, whom he stole the undisputed middleweight title, even tho it was BHOP who unified the belts, Taylor just was lucky he had the right style. HBO hyped him to be the next big thing. especially with a failing Heavyweight division and the aging Oscar De La Hoya, they needed new talent and new stars, so they tried to hype this B+ fighter, then he loses his belt after 2-3 defenses, and gets knocked out two more times. What a career huh? Why are you so personal about it? Are you his manager? I was never a fan of him, nor will I ever. He fought his heart out in Pavlik 1, winky kicked his ARSE. You can keep talking, as a casual poster here, I guess I can say you don't know SH*T. Have a nice day!
Sunday Dec 13, 2009 03:30:12 AM
Slyboogie:  I can't remeber the last time some1 hit the canvas as hard as taylor did verse king A hang it up jt before it's not your call
Sunday Dec 13, 2009 06:54:27 AM
sofakinggud:  Dibella is not backing out of this over concern for JT but more so to get one of his other fighters (dawson more then likely) in this tournament and make more money. Dont believe the hype!
Sunday Dec 13, 2009 04:39:51 PM
Master Snake:  Check this! Who'd want to fight this guy after what he's been through. It would be like trying to win a fight against an egg without cracking the shell. Hard to do. Ward may lose the fight against Taylor, if it happens, out of fear of killing Jermain. I think Taylor should retire. But it ruins the true concept of the Super Six Tournament if a contestant quits. You can't replace the weak link in the tournament with a strong contender (Green, Bute?) who has to fight with a points disadvatage.
Monday Dec 14, 2009 09:28:38 AM
Matthew:  I have to applaud DiBella for this move. Taylor should not continue to box, considering the last three kayo losses he has suffered. I can see him sustaining 12 rounds of punishment against Ward, which certainly won't make his neurological situation any better. Listen, I'm just as skeptical, if not more so, than the next guy. But until I know otherwise, I have to take DiBella at face value. It could be that he has underlying intentions, but we simply don't know that at this time. I hope he's sincere; very few other promoters would leave money on the table.
Monday Dec 14, 2009 09:57:18 AM
MIKE C :  Lou, dont listen to all these guys talking junk, as you can see most of them are also boxers. You are doing the right thing by walking away. If that was my fighter i 2 would also tell him to hang up the gloves. He will never win his next fight ,not a chance. At times you have to protect a boxer from himself, THIS IS THE TIME,. J.Taylor liten to those who know best and RETIRE. Dont make a fool out of yourself, dont leave your kids with out a dad!! think twice before you even walk into another gym, this is your life!!!!!!
Monday Dec 14, 2009 02:42:50 PM
TC:  Jermain is, and always has been a class act. Wish him all the best. If he passes his next battery of tests, let him have one more payday. I see radam lee is up to his usual petulant attacks; get over yourself!!!! That type of shite doesn't belong here.
Monday Dec 14, 2009 04:16:02 PM
Real Talk's unbiased opinion:  Whateva Lou's intentions are it'sthe right thing to do. If he's got another fighter to inject.....can you blame him for trying. That's the smart business move to make. On the other hand you don't have to worry about somebodies death on your hands. Night after night for years seeing that persons face in your dreams. Not a good look ....at all. Sometimes they talk to you....sometimes they just stare. Taylor's a fighter who has the fighters spirit, on top of that muscle memory. It's going to be an uphill battle to get him to sit down. If you're reading this Taylor, take a 2 year break. Relax , heal and then see how you feel. You've been blessed with a wife, a family, and some change to hold you and your down. You've been the middleweight champion of the world and you're a somebody, a part of history. You've got less to prove than you think. You can fight again but you know you need to do the right thing and rest up. Why would you go into a fight nowhere near %100. You can train some kids and work with 'em. Look deep before you leap my dude. I don't want to hear about another loss of a warrior. Dueces
