Tim "Desert Storm" Bradley Vs. Lamont Peterson On Sat.
By David A. Avila
Until a little more than a year ago few fight fans knew about Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley and right now they know even less about Lamont “Havoc” Peterson.
Believe me, they know about each other.
“I’ve known Timothy for a long time,” said Peterson (27-0, 13 KOs) who fights out of Washington D.C., a hotbed for boxing. “We even roomed together in England when we were amateurs fighting in a tournament over there.”
Bradley and Peterson are very familiar with each other having participated as representatives in international competition as amateurs. Both have extensive experience as amateurs.
Now Peterson will try to punch his way toward winning Bradley’s WBO junior welterweight title on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Agua Caliente Casino. The Gary Shaw Production will be televised by Showtime.
Just recently Bradley has grabbed boxing fans with his ultra fast hand and foot speed in successfully defending his title against Nate Campbell, Edner Cherry, and Kendall Holt. People forget he beat England’s then much hyped Junior Witter.
Bradley knows Peterson very well.
“Lamont is young, hungry and trying to make a name for himself,” said Bradley (24-0, 11 KOs) while at his Indio training camp that was bustling with fighters. “He’s got real long arms he’s going to try to keep me at bay and make me fall short.”
Speed and stamina are probably Bradley’s strongest attributes. Against Campbell the flashing fists and footwork were on full display. He has other factors that he plans to utilize.
“I have more experience than he does and the ability to adjust,” says Bradley who is fighting in Palm Springs a second time. “He’s fighting in my hometown so he will have to bring it.”
This fight is not just a regular world title fight between to 140-pounders. It’s perhaps the most pivotal battle in a division that is overlooked due to the blue hot welterweight division. But a victory by either Bradley or Peterson could lead to several lucrative and interesting fights.
Can anyone say Amir Khan?
Khan just recently erased Dmitriy Salita like a human fly swatter. Since teaming with venerable Freddie Roach, the lightning quick Khan with his ability to attract fans can energize the division.
Americans barely saw Khan one time. That came against former featherweight great Marco Antonio Barrera, who is past his prime. Salita may not have been estimated to be a world beater, but he was undefeated for 10 years.
Bradley realizes he’s smack in the middle of something good, but doesn’t want to look ahead. He knows Peterson presents a multitude of problems with his height, defense and overall boxing skill.
One more thing says Bradley about Peterson: “He’s got good conditioning.”
Peterson likes Bradley but this is all about winning for the Washington D.C. based fighter.
“If Bradley were engaging another opponent I would support him. But since he is fighting against me, there is no such thing as a friendship,” says Peterson.

Great! Boxing for the insomniac! I'm rooting Bradley! Bradley boma ye! even tho i'm in DC also, all about desert storm! Here's how i feel it'll turn out: round 1: feeling out, bradley gets off some combos, gets stunned once or twice, round 2: bradley still adapting and even. round 3: even round 4: bradley's speed and quickness and timing come into play round 5: more of the same round 6 : peterson rallies back and bags a couple more rounds round 9: bradley hits another gear and bangs the body and head round 10-12: all bradley . bradley wins 116-112 on two of the judge's scorecard, bradley by UD, calls out paquiao or mosley or malignaggi. Bradley witter was one of the dullest fights i ever seen. I don't like watching witter fight,he stinks, and he stunk it big time after realizing he couldn't pull any offense on bradley. i feel bradley could give pacquiao a challenge! Holler!

Witter, Holt, Campbell, then Peterson... gotta admit! Bradley don't pick and choose his opponents! He takes on the best! And that's admirable! He ain't into mandatory defenses that are touted on PPV and hyped up on 24/7 (ahem, pavlik rubio cough cough). Holler!

MisterLee, Peterson is Bradley's mandatory fight so lets not put him on a pedestal yet. I've seen Peterson up close and personal at the Bald Eagle rec center and he is the real deal. He will suprise most people by the way he beats Bradley. He will make Bradley look for a way out of the ring. Bradley might not flat out quit but he will head but Lamont or something like that to get out of the ring by the 8th round. Paterson by late TKO.

THIS ONE IS GOOD!!!!! This two won't only rock n'roll all night long, they will give us an action pack fight. For this one Bradley needs to take it easy not trying to be the commanding force he likes to be because Lamont could take big advantage counter-punchering him. But Bradley is smart and he will box. I have to say I like his heart a lot but Lamont looks sharper and more experienced to me technically. I see Lamont by split decision. One of them might go knockdown but Lamont will prevail at the end.

Radam G -- if he did pick:
|
Wow! From Team Peterson it was a million spits how he supposely beat up Money May in the gym -- in sparring. Wow! I don't believe that. If true, he will kayo Bradley, NOT! Lamont Peterson is more hype than fight. This is his turn to show the world that he can burn -- the opponent or up. Like most of the time, I'm not picking in this bout. I'm making that clear -- as I don't pick in most bout. But some haters are always up in everybody grill saying that "Radam pick diz....Radam pick dat wrong. And now he is not eating crow and admitting to it." So let me say that if I were picking, I'd pick Desert Storm Bradley. He should make LP into tasty dessert for him. LP has just too many flaws. The major one is standing around earmuffin' and puffin' and one punchin' and two punchin' over and over again. Holla!

I'm in a rare agreement with GOAT on this one. Peterson is the real deal. I see Peterson utilizing his height and reach advantage on Bradley. He will pay for coming inside. I like Bradley for being ballsy as he is but I don't see him getting off on Lamont. It's no rumor that Peterson gave Floyd one hell of a sparring session. Don't be surprised if we see those two lock heads at 147 in a year or two. I'm sure Peterson wins this by UD or 10th round stoppage. There will be Havoc in there!

Willie Blain was faking Lamont Peterson out of his jock when they fought,.. but Blaine is a very non-offensive runner with bad hands,.. he quit on his stool in the seventh because of a bum hand,. and Lamont never landed a meaningful blow on him all night,.. just plodded tenetively after Blaine while getting juked out of position,.. over and over again,.. Lamont is either covering up,.. with the ear muffs,.. or throwing punches when the other opponent has his guard up,.. very predictable,. and very easy to read,... I've never seen Peterson really mix it up or counterpunch,... or punch "with" an opponent,.. it's either duck and cover,.. or it's all out assault (as he punches the other guys gloves),.. and he telegraphs his intentions everytime.. Bradley is the more adaptable and resourceful fighter,.. sparring session rumors mean nothing,.. guys like middleweight Andy Lee actually had good days against Klitscho, and Jermaine Taylor,.. but underperforms miserably in the ring.... Bradley by a close,..and lively,.. UD or MD....as Bradley takes advantage of Petersons',..predictable Earmuff or Assault (on or off) pattern of boxing

Radam G - Ain't tellin' how I saw it, but I know it:

#1PacFan, I agree to disagree with you. Lamont Peterson and Samuel Peters or even Peter Pan -- if dat sucka was a fighter -- are just like every other B fighter or bum, even a tomato can. They are always claiming how they beat the heck out of the champion in sparring. There is no way in heck that green, very flawed Peterson can come anywhere near beating Money May. A scariest, cautionist Money May would kayo that dude in about 45 seconds. This dude couldn't even beat aged, poetic, noise spitting Pops Joy May. LP is a decent fighter, nothing more, nothing special. There have been fighters who gave Money May a thrashing in sparring on a very bad days, but LP is not one of them. Ask any other boxers or fightwriters in this Universe do they believe LP. Some of the other boxers and ex boxer who I know in here by their reader pseudonyms, B-Sug, Frank Z, Pete Steward (partly his real name), B. Major and another couple, who I cannot think of right now, holla at them. Man, BIG LIES come out of sparring sessions by the lesser fighters. All boxers and trainers know that. They just using psy-ops on the naive public and naive opponents with limited or bad management. The one thing that LP has to do, is get in that squared jungle by himself and fight. You will see doing his bout with Bradley that LP musta' been jokin' about competing with Money May. Money May is a maze for him. Only Team Pac and Posse Pac know how to figure out that maze and run right through it. Don't be surprise to see LP lost and look bad during it. Holla!

#1 PacFan "sign the contract Floyd!":
|
@Radam, you have your sources I have mine. If I had the chance to tell you I would but in here you know the deal. I'm not bringing this up to convince you but let me explain. They did spar for two days and Money got overs on Peterson, LP did went out there on the second day and put the hurt on Money May. Remember that it was said that May beat the crap out of LP but as soon as LP's camp heard the lies, they broke their code of silence and went on record saying the truth. Mayweather's camp fired first anticipating that LP would come out bragging that he gave Floyd one helluva sparring session but doing this backfired on May. You notice after LP's camp countered with their own assessment that Mayweather has nothing else to say. You can believe me or not but I have inside sources on this. I know your sources is strong as well but I think we won't come to an agreement on this issue. @brownsugar, if sparring sessions don't matter then why do it? I know it's not the same as fight night but it does improve a fighters ability to adapt when facing that type of fighter. Look at Manny, he spars with top level competition which is why he is so successful when it comes to taking punishment from bigger fighters. He goes up against big ellusive fighters as well. I hope he keeps Porter in there and instead of Berto I would prefer Mosley.

@ Radam -- Sparing doesn't mean much to me, I have seen him and his brother fight many times and they are excellent fighters. We will never know how great mayweather is, because he refuses to challenge himself. After he fights pac, he needs to fight a few other solid welterweights and stop frontin. He should be able to beat lamont peterson, but we will never know until he gets in the ring. Guys like Peterson and Bradley would give any fighter including pac and mayweather all they can handle. If you think mayweather or pac walks through them your kidding yourself... @ Brownsugar - I watched that willie blain fight, or half marathon! You can't look good against a fighter who is in trying to survive. No boxer looks good against that kind of fighter!

@ Radam G, I agree. Lamont does do a lot of the earmuffing. He's going to have to come out of the shell for this one. Lamont is rock solid with conditioning and can take punishment and give it. Holt didn't wan those problems so he chose Bradley. That aint work. @ Misterlee...you sleeping on Lamont. Just because you live in the D.C. area b4 doesn't mean you've followed this guy or saw him work ...live in the gym. I think this will be a breakout fight for Lamont. I give Bradley the edge because of speed , more big stage and punches in bunches, but I think Peterson's got the tools to take him apart. Bradley gets wild at times and can be caught and hurt. We'll see , I'm rolling with the home team, and not on blind optimism. Dueces

Everybody looks, but nobody sees. Peterson and Bradley are green as tree leaves. Both PacMan and Mayweather would knocked both of them out in a round or two. And make a big fool out of the both of them. They are far -- very far -- from the league of Pera Pac and Money May. Fans can buy whatever they want to. But this game is full of optical illusions and magical tricks. Sorry guys, no pun intended! But if you are not a magicians or illusionists or even a pee wee amateur boxers with the proper pugilistic training, mentors and gurus, you cannot make me accept $hit. That is lesson number one of a pugilist -- don't believe malarkey or non-boxing logic. This bout between Peterson and Bradley will not be a canaidate (word misspelled) for fight of the year. This bout will be bit more than snoozer or stopped because of hit butts and/or maybe a cut. @#1Pac, sorry but sparring sharping you for fighting, not taking "punishment from bigger fighters." Only people who don't know how to fight take punishment intentional. No sane great fighter take punishment intentional ever. Moving with the punch -- known as riding the punch -- takes the full impact of the punch away. Besides, nowadays the referees won't allow much punishment. If the person breathes on you too hard, they will stop the bout. And sometimes boxng commissioners like Larry Hazard will jump into the ring and stop it, though that is against the rules and tradition of the game. (Dat sucka should have been sued by the losing boxer. New Jersey dumped Hazard because they knew that it was a matter of time before a lawsuit would hit them for his meddling nonsense.) The only persons who can stop the bout are suppose to be the boxer himself, the boxer's head cornerman, the referee and/or the ring doctor. Holla!

@ Yuvie - I agree, hats off to Tim Bradley for taking all the tough fights! He could have waited for some big money fight with Pac or Hatton, but he's a true warrior!! @Radam - Mayweather hasn't taken anyone out in two rounds since the 90's dude, what are you talking about? If you think these two guys are pushovers you are sadly mistaken. Pacman isn't going to walk through these guys either, just because he walked Cotto down doesn't mean anything! Remember this, Ricardo Torres had Cotto on queer street at 140, yet Cotto beats Mosley & Clottey... You tell me who is better Mosley or Torres?? That's why we get in the ring. Don't put words in my mouth. I said that Bradley and Peterson are green -- not "pushovers." They both will tell you that. And their trainers and management will say the same. (Come to the fight and ask. I'll be there.) They are not seasoned pros and are nowhere near Pera Pac or Money May. And 95 percent of the expert guns and pop-gun wannabes in real boxing -- not some fantasy jive -- will tell everybodeee and dey mommas dat. WOW! You are a genius! "Mayweather hasn't taken anyone out in two rounds since the 90's (sic) dude, what are you talking about?" Mayweather hasn't fought green-arse prospects since the 90s, DUDE! Bradley and Peterson are good -- not great -- prospects. They are far from being the elite. Instead of gettin' up in my grill, just wait until the a-hair-above-bums' Saturday bout. These guys are just promoting the bout. Bradley is not "willing to die to win," in his own words. That is called "boxing talk" to get butts in those paying seats and a good HBO rating. And Peterson needs a lot of work. Holla!

I agree with you a PINOY 1,000 percent about PacMan. Go back and look at his sparring sessions and you will see that he is rolling and riding with every body punch then going upside the sparring partners' head and body, as he did Cotto. Just wait until you see the tricks -- "possum" as you call it -- that he is going to put on Money May. Holla!

@Radam, the question will be, can May take the bait? I doubt it. BREAKING NEWS! Mayweather is backing out of the Pacquiao fight! Hahahahahahaha! What you have to say about that? He said in quote, "Well I already agreed to fight him, he's the one who backed out so I'm fighting in Europe against Ricky Hatton's brother, " and "I told you Pacquiao is afraid to fight me." How can Pacquiao be afraid if it is he who already signed the contract. If this is true then Mayweather is the biggest laughing stock in boxing.

today I checked out some footage of Peterson from his amatuer days,.on youtube,.... he rarely uses the earmuffs and is more free and confrontational with his punches,.. even mixing it up with his opponent trying to catch the other guy between the punches... but every single fight I've seen with LP (as a pro),.. he's either on the assault or he has his earmuffs on... that means that if your trying to hit LP,.. he never lets his hands go until his opponent is done(keeping his guard high),.. which limits his connect rate to a low percentage because he cannot counterpunch from that position,.. regarding sparring,.. it's definitely crucial and extremely necessary,.. but it's practice... if the guy whose trying to learn his technique is letting his sparring partner TEE off on him during a session so he can practice a move,. then you would not expect him to win if it were judges sitting around at ringside... You should know this,.. because Pac has looked spectacularly bad in some sessions with a variety of boxers... and Roach never denied it,.. says "Yeah,. Pac needs to work on some things",.. but that's all it is,.. WORK,.. when it's time to get in the ring,.. the positive effect of Pac's sparring is clearly evident when he out scores or KO's his opponents... plus you know that Ali never beat up sparring Partners... Practice and the real fight are two different things,.. yes it's possible for Peterson to win tommorrow,. it just happens to be that my opinion is that he will not,.. if you are correct... I'll dedicate a personal post to your incredible insight and excellence in for-seeing the fights,.. it's only boxing,.. pc out..

@ swift... very well. I sometimes agree with you, sometimes don't. That's fine. Here's a few points... number 1: the TSSU is a Boxing PUBLICATION, not a boxing blog. That's where you're wrong #1. number 2: Your calling out TSS regs, and/or disrespecting them is uncalled for. ya gotta earn your respect in this universe just like everyone. Radam, who was 07 or 08 reader of the year has been around TSS for quite a few years. I'm quite a noob myself having been here for only a year or less. Unequivoval respect must be given to Radam and the Don (donputo 69). Number 4: You always talk about how you're not impressed with what pple say, but what about you? Don't get me wrong, you're on point a lot of the time, but in my opinion, you're simply an above average poster that makes TSSU a more colorful place to discuss and read up on boxing. Your comments are sharp, insightful, and usually quite accurate, but you don't always bring up original points, nor do you say things that "wow" everyone, so in that way, you're like most posters who simply give their opinion, so how does that make your knowledge so much better than the others? Radam has staked even before the Winky fight on LTP 's high punch rate and low connect percentage, he staked himself out on a limb to make that point , and martinez fight shows he was right. Number 5: communication: if you're saying something to someone, or if you're simply disputing an opinion, you can continue on the topic, but when you say @ so-and-so you're specifically calling them out as if they're being singled out, and them is fightin' words. And all that bert sugar nonsense is useless, as its just unnecessary sarcasm and disrespecting readers that have been on here longer than you and I put together. Number 6: making your point: whenever I make a point, whether pple agree or disagree with it, i try to analyze it to the fullest: I analyze the boxer's strengths and weaknesses, I analyze their choice of opponents, I analyze what i think would happen in a fight, I analyze what HAS happened in a fight, I analyze score, I analyze compubox and punch stats, I analyze announcers and promoters, I analyze writer's opinions, posters' opinions, and I try to bring outside sources when necessary at times. This is what I bring to the table, tho it's not always the most professional or impressive, at least I try to be thorough. From time to time you come in with spot on insights and predictions, but so what? You expect us to revere you with all your "knowledge and history" just b/c you been "in the game for so long". Well take a ticket and get in line buddy, almost ALL Tss'ers here have been at the game and at it a long time, and many write MORE information (instead of just talking about it) and better information, and a lot write less and worse than you, but you gotta EARN your respect here, not just talk yourself up like a mini-version of Floyd. You haven't said anything that has blown our hair back. I have staked myself on here for many fights and many fighters, and sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong, HOWEVER, it's what I say that really earns pple's respect whether it's good or wack, but I never assume pple will acknowledge me with respect just b/c i post here. I went on and on in the last thread about compubox numbers and scoring rounds. Know why? b/c we were in intense debate about williams martinez, and i dont like to simply squash pple's opinions with brute words and name calling and "i know more than you and been watching longer than you" arguments, but rather fight numbers, punch counts, scoring rounds, analyzing moments in the fight and styles and changing of tactics and fighter's strenghts and weaknesses. I like arguing in concrete terms based on real life examples, not just saying "my opinoin is better than yours bc_____ ". So yeah, prove yourslef, and you will get the respect you think you deserve. Holler!

MisteRLee @ Brownsugar:

Where you at SmileyC? How's that desk reference coming? So yeah B-sug, you're totally right. Pple make a lot of sparring, but there's something called "peaking" for athletes, which is whenever you train for a long term, you want to make sure you "peak" for the main event that you're training for months down the road. It means training your body hard, but not too hard that you burn out before the set date. Anything that happens in between, good or bad, is done to set yourslef up to be YOUR BEST on fight night. Lance armstrong very well does the same thing in cycling. He makes sure he peaks every year during the Tour de France. How? He engages in smaller bicycle races throughout the year, getting 12th place, 5th place, 30th place, racing as a team member for someone else etc. All that comes along is to make him better for that date. We also know what happens if a fighter over trains for a bout, he loses the pop and snap he had during fight camp (look at de la hoya agst pacquiao fight night, under weight and over trained and dehydrated, no excuses for him, but it is a fact, he woulda loss anyway, but still a fact). The same could be seen in sparring for boxers, "practice" for basketball players vs. games (just ask allan iverson!), or for me, having 2-3 months of hard training before a big wushu competition. When i train for a comp, i usually look like crap in the first month or 2 months of practice, b/c i'm upping my stamina and training intensity and frequency, and maybe towards a week before the competition I might look decent, but ya best believe I always have my best on competition day, and always feel a big spring in level RIGHT after competition and permanently (those long hours of pracitce pay off on comeptition day and any day after, the pop and hard work pays off). I've also over trained for competitions and showed up sore and unable to perform, and i've under trained in the last week building to a comp and have gone to competition feeling uncoordinated, weak, and unpracitced. It's a delicate balance, really. But after a while, you get to know a style of preparation and it becomes clockwork. Holler!

The guy swift guy misquoted Radam and continued to make up stuff even after he was called out to troll up. Maybe the guy doesn't know what a quote is. He did exactly what Radam said that would do, continue to make up stuff fo' sure!

smiley C - I think you guys feel threatened when you think someone else knows as much or more about boxing. Like I said before, I'm not attacking, just discussing. If you have an opinion about an upcoming fight and I disagree is that calling you out?

On your last couple of comments, I'll back you up. It's good to see a newer guy aroud like yourself who knows a thing or two boxing wise. I think you handeled that fairly. It wasn't to aggressive or to laid back on your stance. So far, you have my support.

Wow! Now that you mention it, he is! Paying a second glance at his paragraph. I see your point. I take my previous comment back. Swift, this isn't ESPN with "Doofus Dan"! This is a RESPECTABLE site. Let's keep it clean in here. We can't have people throwing around F bombs like Dick Cheney. I know it's the S word, but I'm just using an example. Cmon! THIS BULL DOUBLE STANDARD HAS GOT TO STOP!!! The editor didn't have any problem disciplining me back when I got out of hand, but I've calmed down now. Editor, it's time to step back up!

EM is an editor, not a baby sitter! However, part of his job it so keep the quality of the site up, so when the convo strays too far he'll tip the balance back, but I think swift is dancing on healthy discussion/heated argument vs. blasting someone. However, here's the thing, swift, you said you don't care about getting respect, you openly disrespect regulars, and you EXPECT to get your point across in this community that way? Radam would just rag at you b/c your simply disrespecting the community and throwing caution/rules to the window. No doubt you bring good boxing knowledge, but doubt is how you're doing it and operating on your own rules and expecting others to understand or sympathize. You're still a noob, you haven't proved to US "how much you know". Let's see it. Holler!

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
