76 Second Smackdown: Amir Khan Obliterates Dmitriy Salita

By Michael Woods

WBA super lightweight/junior welterweight champion Amir Khan (22-1, 16 KOs) demolished Dmitriy Salita (30-1-1, 16 KOs) in the first round on Saturday night at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England.

The Brit Khan, age 22,  may well be the top dog at 140, now that Freddie Roach has tightened up his defense and instilled some of that Pacmannish desire for destruction; he smashed Salita immediately, just ten seconds in, with a one-two, and Salita was on his butt. He arose, and was down again off a few combos with 55 seconds elapsed.

The fight was stopped by ref Luis Pabon after the third knockdown, as the shaky legged Salita ate a left hook which sent him back into the ropes, hanging on for dear life.

The fight, such as it was,  lasted just 76 seconds. It was Khan’s first defense of the belt, won from Andriy Kotelnik in July.

The 27-year-old Ukrainian born Salita wasn't given much of a chance from pundits, as most cited his paper-thin resume. But one wondered if perhaps he'd be able to channel some of the same energy that Yuri Foreman, another Jewish icon residing in New York, summoned in his takedown of WBA 154 pound champion Daniel Santos on Nov. 14. It was not to be.

SALT lover:  Nice questions Woods: "Is Khan For Sure The Man At 140? Or Should We Not Make Much Of The Salita Rubout?" I pick the obvious latter. It's not like Salita was a star at the 140lbs. I saw the guy's resumé, and all he fought were cap drivers, and bartenders. Amir Khan must've been impressive (I didn't see the fight), but that's exctly what he should've done. Congrats for Khan, but this fight wasn't exactly a five star match. This that being said, I say Khan will lose his Title to any of the other top 140lbs Champions/top fighters. Tim Bradley, Ricky Hatton, Juan Urango, and Devon Alexander, will all touch that chinny face. Hell, I would even give 'Chino' Maidana a great chance of being Khan's second Breidis Prescott. It was a good defense for Khan, but let's get carried away.

SALT lover:  *but let's NOT get carried away.....Hehehehehe, my bad.

Radam G, da humble P already hollered happy 40th b 2 Jay-Z:  Master Coach Freddie "Top Notch Trainer" Roach is no joke. He is no double the coach of the year and the coach of the decade. He rocks. Amir Khan may just be the boxer of the next decade. As PacMan is the boxer of this decade. He is going expose Money May into Small Change May. Holla!

Frank Z:  I'm with salt lover. let's not crown anyone too quick. let's see how he does against another champ like maidana, tim bradley or devon alexander. let's not forget viscious victor ortiz, that guy will be back unless he seirously decides to do something else.

MisterLee:  I would say beat: Ortiz, Maidana, Torres (whoop!), Kendal Holt, or Bradley, or even the burnout Junior witter, and we'll talk... actually I never want to see another Sr. Witter fight ever again, he stinks a fight more than DIrrell, Scareweather, RJJ vs. Bhop 1 combined x 2. But ya know what i mean. I feel khan is a potential great lightweight, but i dunno if he can take a jr. welter punch, tho his ability is great. If he can outbox maidana, or handle ortiz in his comeback fight, i'll have something to say, but yeah, jr. welter is almost a loaded division. Bring us some tru victories and BAD events and we'll talk. THe Roast will book him in some nice events... pc!

Davey:  well lets not be too harsh on Khan for destroying the WBA no 1 contender Salita as it was a mandatory challenge, Oh the under card fight Kevin Mitchell vs Presscott was a great fight mItchell outboxed Presscott all night and caught Prescott with some hard punches of his own and made Prescott miss loads!!
Saturday Dec 5, 2009 07:23:41 PM
MisterLee:  Urango stinks! Hatton Khan wouldn't be a bad match up but hatton woud need to climb up that mountain again (hopefully not agst marquez, i smell lousy all around that. Marquez belongs in lightweight. Holler!)
Saturday Dec 5, 2009 07:24:37 PM
bill major:  ricky hatton? khan would destroy him ,come on ,are you serious? amir khan is fighting better than ever thanks to roach.it does make a differance when youve got a great trainer and a great pupil.

NY suprised:  Anyone from NY boxing scene is not surpised...It was widwly known that Salita was protected, took only easy fights and natural talent was mediocre at best. He was a gimmick.
Saturday Dec 5, 2009 08:52:50 PM
razor211:  amir khan done what is expected of him: demolish a mediocre opponent. he still needs a substantial amount of fights with elite fighters in the lightweight division before he can be considered for any honorifics
Saturday Dec 5, 2009 09:08:16 PM
MisterLee:  Khan looked awesome, but let's see how he does it agst victor ortiz or someone good in the division, or a torres with the power punching or kendall holt. so far he beat an old smaller barrera, the weakest link at jr. welter, and a limited contender. But i'm on board. I like him as an athlete and i like his image/personality he exudes... confident, but not too cocky. I'd say he'd be hard presed to beat maidana, ortiz, or torres. If he beats any of those guys, even chop chop corley if he's still around, i'll be all ears. Holler! Or even paulie malignaggi (maybe if he fights winner of diaz malignaggi i'm all ears!) holler! or mathew hatton. Pc!

IsaiahNOTwishingJayZAhappybirthday:  I heard his "EMPIRE" song and the line putting down Jesus and the church. On the music video, it's when he's in his room looking out of the window. F that Illuminati jerk! Anyway congrats to Amir Khan, I guess. This win doesn't mean much.

MisterLee:  Marquez vs. Campbell anyone? Khan vs. Campbell, or diaz, or malignaggi, hatton, urango, holt, ortiz, torres, bradley... the list goes on... no more ducking the real competition. He's filling in so much and so tall, i'd be scared he'd have problems making weight someday and would have to take that fragile chin up to welterweight. Holler!
Sunday Dec 6, 2009 02:46:08 AM
Fe'Roz :  A totally fresh and untouched Khan will be Manny's chief sparring partner for the March fight with Floyd.
Sunday Dec 6, 2009 09:31:10 AM
brownsugar:  Khan is like the Wlad Klitcho of the junior welter weights,.. he's got excellent foot speed, stamina and hand speed,.. he's a marvelous boxer,..and can dance and move for twelve rounds easy,.. the chin is as breakable as balsa wood,.. but he's so good in the every other area,... only a tiny percentage of fighters will ever get close enough to his chin,..to test it...now is the time to start fighting the cream of the crop,.. there's no lack of talent in the jr welters...
Sunday Dec 6, 2009 11:49:53 AM
AFN:  Roach's fighters love to make me eat crow. Jr Welter is fun. EL TOONOY
Sunday Dec 6, 2009 04:24:40 PM
Isaiah:  Isn't it about time we see Khan against a live opponent? 35 year old Marco Antionio Barrera doesn't count. Timothy Bradley, Lamont Peterson, a returning Ricky Hatton, probaly Nate Campbell, Paulie M., Juan DIaz I think, etc. There are not a lack of options. Time to step the game up!

#1 PacFan "Pacquiao by split decision or late round stoppage!":  Freddie "No Joke Coach" Roach is going to go down in history as one of the greatest Trainers of all time. The man just keeps training winners. He's a rejuvanator! He brings out the full potential in a fighter. If you're willing the man will show you the way. He sure takes after his former great trainer Eddie Futch.
Sunday Dec 6, 2009 11:11:29 PM
MisterLee:  Let's not forget Anderson Silva, whom Freddie Roach trained, and his impressive one punch KO of Forrest Griffin one weight class up from middleweight at LHW for UFC (205) . Roach has the most! Holler!
Monday Dec 7, 2009 09:35:23 PM
phphphung:  Is Freddie Roach the general of some kind of Asian Invasion in boxing; first Pacquiao and now Amir Khan! I sure hope that Khan can be the next decade's star in the same way that Pacquaio has been this decade. It's a great time to be a boxing fan

Usahfu:  Khan is the truth, kid got dynamite in his hands and a killer instinct to match. Fight i'd like to see isTimothy Bradly. Top choice in my view. Can't believe somebody put Paulie M. as a good matchup for Khan though, P M is a bum. As far as Roach, he is able to get maximum results from his fighters in camp and it shows come fight night. His fighter's natural attributes blossom. Seems like most do not reach full potential.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
