Mia St. John and Macho Raising Money For Mentally Ill

By David A. Avila

Mia St. John and Hector “Macho” Camacho appeared at the weigh-in on Friday at the Pechanga Resort and Casino to speak with the show’s organizers and to kick-start a fund-raiser set for Saturday.

St. John’s goal is to raise money for mental illness victims especially children and including those incarcerated who make up a large percentage of prison population. The event takes place on Nov. 28, at the New York City Boxing Club in Canoga Park, Calif.

One of the key stars for the event called “A Night of Knockouts” is Camacho himself who was given special permission to leave the state of Florida where he is under probation. For those who don’t know the Macho man is still an active fighter and recently fought Yory Boy Campas to a draw.

“I should have won that fight easy,” said Camacho, who at 47 still looks pretty good and carries a sharp wit. “I learned I can’t cut weight the way I used to. I have to do it the hard way from now on.”

If you’re wondering how a Chicana from California and a Boricua from Florida hooked up for the charity event; it’s quite simple: both are part of a new reality show on Telemundo called Street Verdict. It’s a new show produced by Lou Pizarro who currently produces Operacion Repo.

“I’m the host of the show,” said St. John who stills fights professionally and has more than 50 pro fights.

Pizarro accompanied St. John and Camacho to the Temecula casino resort. Both will be assisting the Chicana prizefighter, writer and actress with her event.

“It’s to raise awareness and support to those who can’t get help,” said St. John, who often sponsors various charity groups. “Some people don’t know where to go and what to do.”

St. John said that a number of comedians are performing and singer Bryan McKnight is also going to entertain those who attend the Saturday night event that begins at 7 p.m.

Camacho is the guest of honor for the event that also includes cast members of the Operacion Repo show and former heavyweight champion Lamon Brewster.

It’s all part of the “El Saber Es Poder” Foundation a nonprofit group.

More Macho

It’s hard to imagine that Camacho has been fighting professionally since 1982. The Puerto Rican born legend has engaged in 87 pro fights and engaged with some of the greatest fighters to ever lace up gloves.

Anyone less than 30 years old might dismiss Camacho but if you ever saw him when he first began with those lightning reflexes, quick feet and power to spare as a junior lightweight, then fight much bigger and stronger guys as he got older, it’s phenomenal.

His only losses came to Greg Haugen, Julio Cesar Chavez, Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and Chris Walsh. That last fighter beat Camacho in 2003.

“I’m looking to make three more fights,” said Camacho, who beat Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Haugen, Roberto Duran, Vinny Pazienza, and Sugar Ray Leonard to name a few.

Camacho has unfinished business, then he wants to call it a career.

“I want to go out a success like George Foreman,” said the energetic and charismatic Camacho. “I just want a couple more fights then that’s it.”

One fighter on Camacho’s bull’s eye is Oxnard’s Fernando “El Feroz” Vargas.

“He called out my son but I want to fight him,” said Camacho, who knocked out Perry Ballard a year ago in a junior middleweight bout. “I really want to fight that guy if he can make the weight.”

The highest weight that Camacho has fought is 161.

Camacho would also like a crack at Nicaragua’s crazy Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga.

“Those are the kind of fights I’m looking for,” he said. “I just want to fight three more fights. But at least I got a legacy.”

Isaiah:  FIrst off, this is surely a worthy cause and nothing like having Mia St. John standing there to grab my attention for the cause. HA! Second, let "ole" Camacho Sr. go ahead and get in the ring with Mr. Ricardo (Punching bag to the stars) Mayorga. (By the way, not my quote...) That should be fun. Is it Ms. :) or Mss. :( St. John by the way? And does she need anyone to escort her to these events? Just saying...

Pegleyjr:  This caught my attention right away as mental illness has really affected my life and is a painful everyday reality. St. John and Camacho have both attained the dream of a life in the world of professional boxing and it's cool that they are both involved in this event--too bad St. John isn't on the card herself as she has always been an interesting boxer and has stuck with it to be the best at it that she can be. She pretty much used to be the face of women's boxing as her bouts were regularly popping up on TV. I don't think she has always been respected. I've seen an interview from several years back from the prefight from Chevelle Hallback-Layla McCarter II and McCarter (my fave female fighter by the way) took a bit of a jab at St. John and her Playboy fame. St. John-McCarter would probably be a good match (Mr. Tapia?), I'm not sure about the weights. Peace!

the Roast:  I like Mia on points over Camacho in a ten round snoozer. Macho's not so macho style is not good enough to beat a past her prime playmate at this point. Winner fights Yori boy's little sister.

Radam G -- makin' dat muv:  I was gonna be quiet for a sec, but the Roast is up in herrreee tickling my funny bones. I'm trying to stop laughing. Nonetheless, "It's MACHO TIME!" STILL! And Mia -- that's MY GAALLLL! It's MIA TIME! STILL! Everbodeee and dey mommas should support this great cause of these two pugilists and peeps. I'm still in Cali, so I'm hollering at their worthy event. Mia and Hector are showing mad luv to the late, great Vernon "The Viper" Forrest. In a great, special way, they are picking up his torch. Forrest care so much about mentally ill children and did so much for them. Too many people act as if they don't exist or should be supported and respected. Thanks be to God that Vernon work has not been in vain. The flame that he lighted still burns BRIGHT. God Bless Mia and Hector. And may it always be Vernon "The Viper" Forrest TIME. Thank for the informative piece, West Coast TSS Bureau Chiefy D-Double-A. And so much MAD LUV to my boy MACHO TIME! And gal MIA TIME! Holla!

SALT lover@dp69:  Yo don! Damn, man, you're 100% correct. This dude, Camacho Sr, had one of the fastest hands in boxing. I saw the clinic he put on Pazienza, and Sugar Ray, though he was 41 at the time he fought Camacho. But yeah, you're definitely right, if he would've taken life more serious, he would probably been at the top for longer time.

the Roast:  I agree With Salt and dp69 that Camacho could have been an all time great had he stayed clean. But, After the fight with Edwin Rosario he did turn to that roadrunner style. He got ataste of those hard shots and that kind of changed his mind about taking shots. He didnt want any more of that. I dont know which came first, the drug use or the hard punches.

Suits, Stop Squabbling, And Posturing, AND MAKE FIGHTS!
"Floyd may very well be the most talented boxer but that he does not understand that what the fans, who ultimately pay the bills, watch fights for is entertainment. At the moment, he not only ignores that reality but frankly doesn't seem to care. Neither about our wishes and/or our passion for to see great fights. Thus, there is little Go ... and even less Show. I am vaguely interested in the Business of Boxing. Frankly, it is a mess on a good day and worse on it's worst. I prefer reading the Business pages where brilliant men and women develop skills and strategies to create incredible value and wealth (for themselves and others) in ways far more effectively and meaningfully than those who Rule ...some might say Ruin...this beautiful Sport." --FE'ROZ, speaking for a majority of fight fans
