Pacquiao-Cotto Did 1.25 Million PPV Buys

PACQUIAO-COTTO REGISTERS

1.25 MILLION PAY-PER-VIEW BUYS

Nov. 20, 2009 – NEW YORK -- HBO Sports reported today that 1.25 million pay-per-view buys were generated from last Saturday’s welterweight title fight between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto at the sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.  The fight was promoted by Top Rank, Inc.

The 1.25 million buy total represents the highest performing boxing pay-per-view event in 2009, generating $70 million in pay-per-view revenue.  The figure includes 650,000 buys from cable homes and 600,000 from satellite and telco homes.  A record 110,000 buys from Puerto Rico, Cotto’s home market, are included.  It is the second time that an event featuring Manny Pacquiao, a worldwide superstar, has passed the one million mark in pay-per-view buys.

Pacquiao vs. Cotto will be replayed this Saturday, Nov. 21 at 10:00 p.m. ET/ PT on HBO.  The 12-round TKO triumph by Pacquiao marked his seventh world title in as many different weight classes.

Other HBO playdates of Pacquiao vs Cotto:  Nov. 22 (10:00 a.m.) and 23 (11:40 p.m.)

                HBO2 playdates:  Nov. 22 (2:30 p.m.) and 24 (11:55 p.m.)

Fe'Roz :  The question of PPV value is now is the same question we asked about Manny when he bagan hi incredible climb to welterweight. How high can it/he go? Without question, Manny Pacquiauo has given Boxing a much needed Face-Lift. His name is one the tip of every tongue....far beyond the pre-existing fan base. We are blessed indeed. Greenberg's best chance of bringing boxing back into the mainstream is right now. On the back of a great little man. Who'da thunk'it?

GOAT:  If we are honest we will say this fight underperformed with those PPV numbers. I've read 1.5 to 2 mil PPV right after the fight but now the numbers are low. 1.25 is still very good but not good enough to demand the lion's share in a mega bout with the pretty one. 50/50 split weight 147 location TBD. Lets get it on!

ali @ Goat:  Sounds good to me let's make it happen

Fe'Roz :  No need to split hairs. The two men together will do more combined. I'm with Ali and GOAT. Time to sign.

deepwater:  50-50 is fair to both parties. could be 30 million each. firm 147 wweight limit. 1 million for every pound over floyd
Friday Nov 20, 2009 01:26:39 PM
aka-clay:  I guess Lotierzo was right, the absence of a bad guy did hurt the pay per view buys.
Friday Nov 20, 2009 01:30:21 PM
Fe'Roz :  That hurt you speak of grossed a Fortune for all, aka-clay. Now Roach has said: 50-50%, Let's Bring it on. Floyd? Floyd? Hello!

The Saint:  @GOAT: So we're grading on a scale now? I guess Mayweather's 1.05 million buys is more than Pacquiao's 1.25 million buys? I don't buy the whole "no dance partner" nonsense. At the end of the day, it's all speculation unless we got into the minds of every single person who bought the PPV's and found out if they bought it because of Mayweather, Marquez, Pacquiao or Cotto. Bottom line is, not only did Pacquiao outsell Mayweather by over 200,000 PPV buys, he is the current #1P4P and WBO welterweight champ who had just destroyed perhaps the most dangerous welterweight on this side of Shane Mosley. Mayweather has ZERO credentials as a welterweight.

oinkee:  pacquiao-cotto fight at 1.25 M ppv buys at $54.95 is not bad compared to 1.05 M ppv buys for the mayweather-marquez at $49.95.

Radam G - Tricky with da 411:  The truth is often covered by a bodyguard of lies. Cotto-Pacquiao PPV buys = righteous reality. Marquez-Mayweather PPV buys = marlarkey and humbuggery. They metaphorically stuffed the ballot boxes -- or is that television viewer sites, Big Screen sites and Golden Boy Production freebies hook-up with HBO. You see this hurt bitnezz is sneaky like politicians running for offices. They white lie, front-up stuff and then call it Public Relations. Yup! These butter brains are full of WFD -- weapons of false destruction. The truth of the matter is that Marquez-Mayweather had about 500,000 PPV buys Statesides -- really the customer out of their pockets, not GBP paying for the hook up and calling it Public Relations front buys. But GBP is counting the freebie that he gave Mexico and surrounding Latin countries nearby. The hurt bitnezz will always have backroom dealing putting out up front fibs. The USA and Puerto-Rica had "1.25 Million PPV Buyouts" Holla!
Friday Nov 20, 2009 04:00:42 PM
Radam G - gittin' jiggy with it:  Tell about Cottto-Pacquiao world-wide PPV Buyouts, especially in Asia and the Middle East. No pugilist can touch PacMan Stateside or World-Wide. PacMan is gettin' mad LUV! Aliens from other galaxies are tunning into earth to see da PINOY POWER of the PAC-ATTACK. It's PacMan TIME! Recognize! Holla!

the Roast:  I liked the idea from last week, 45-45 winner gets the extra 10% but 50-50 is fine. Whatever it takes to get this fight signed.

#1 PacFan "Pacquiao #3 on ATG list"Standing firm!:  Looks like the Mayweather camp isn't going to budge even though Manny outsold him in PPV buys. If both camps can't make a deal within the next month, expect Mayweather to fight Matthew Hatton(What a Joke!), kid name Salita, Ricky Hatton(got to be kidding me!) or Shane Mosley(wake me up if this happens). I think the only way Mayweather would have gave in is if Pacquiao-Cotto came close to the 2 million plus PPV buys Mayweather-Dela Hoya did in their fight. HERE'S THE FUNNY PART. THE CAMP THEN SAID THAT THE REASON FOR THE SUCCESS WAS THAT COTTO WAS A MARKETABLE FIGHTER. I have a question for them. Why didn't they choose to fight Cotto if they knew he was an attraction? It keeps on biting you in the @ss, doesn't it? It shows you right there that he had no interest in tangling with Cotto. As for Pac, he's got options to keep his great momentum going. He can fight Mosley(we know darn well he'll choose Manny over May because of the fact that May dump his challenge) to unify the titles(berto is an easy win) or Pacquiao can then shut his biggest critics by finally putting canvas kisser stuck on his back.
Friday Nov 20, 2009 09:44:12 PM
DaveB:  Here's the question. If you had a choice and could only watch one fight and not watch any replays which fight would you choose Mayweather/Marquez or Pacquaio/Cotto? If this fight didn't have 2M ppv's it sure should of.

pacmon:  why does mayweather hide behind the spliting of the purse???gi fight pacquiao 50/50 split sounds fair..pacquiao tol KTLA for the record he wants to fight mayweather so to floyd set the fight will ya..and floyd dont try to hide on you want the bigger share as well as you Oscar..floyd is a nobody outside USA.

Fe'Roz :  Manny' legacy is immense. His fights will be watched ad infinitum. The reason is obvious. They are exciting. When future fight fans look back at the greats of the past, they will look at Manny the way we look at Duran with wonder. Casual fans will understand what all the fuss was about. Real fans will remember the excitement he generated every time they watched him. This is legacy. It is something earned and something intangible. And, yes, like all of boxing, something subjective. It is, however, something that cannot be taken away from Manny in one or two fights. Losing is no disgrace. Not fighting the best is. All the greats have lost. It's how they overcame adversity that made them great. Boxing is blessed with Manny. He has aroused a sleeping giant; the love of blood sport that has recently found a new home in MMA. Manny has given boxing reason. And the reason is his willingness and ability to make matches with the best . And win. Boxing is masochistically beating itself up time and time again. It has no way to insure that the best matches be made. And it breeds promoters and fighters who look first at the purse... and then the opponent. Matches made by metrics is not great sport. It may be good business... but it is not Great business. We need fighters who dare to be great. That is why Manny has ascended to the top. Bottom line, if Floyd takes any fight other than Manny, he should, as Joe Calzaghe said today, retire. If you don't fight the best, why bother. This is the moment of truth Floyd. For the good of Boxing, take the fight.

Isaiah:  That's funny that Mayweather said that Cotto is a marketable fighter like he's trying to say something. What, Pacquiao had nothing to do with those sells? What''s Mayweather saying? Is he saying that Marquez who has a huge fan base had nothing to do with those supposed 1 million PPV buys he got to relish in? Let me put it this way for Floyd. If Cotto is such a marketable fighter and you've had all this time to set up a fight with him, why haven't you?... Don't trip over that egg you just laid. BCUK!!! Watch you all! I bet Floyd demands a 65/35 lion share of the purse and then walks out when the demand isn't met. Man, I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it. BCUK!!! Bad Floyd needs to go back in the hen coop. All roads lead to the Pacman and "lil" Floyd can't stand it! Finally, finally it's Floyd's turn to be the underdog. This is no Rocky story though.
Friday Nov 20, 2009 11:29:23 PM
the Roast:  According to my European sorces, Floyd's next fight will be with a full fledged welter. Dont look now but a deal with Italian speedster Nino LaRocca is all but inked. You heard it here first.
Friday Nov 20, 2009 11:52:55 PM
Nino LaRocca?:  Who the F is Nino LaRocca??!
Saturday Nov 21, 2009 01:09:12 AM
DaveB:  Funny Roast. Nino LaRocca was a flamboyant fighter back in the day, who I can't remember if it was Marlon Starling or Donald Curry, took care of in short order, and it was great to see him get his behind beat.
Saturday Nov 21, 2009 10:23:43 AM
MisterLee:  I believe pacquiao de la hoya dind't have the highest numbers b/c it was universally seen as a mismatch and freak show circus, not a legitimate welterweight fight... in retrospect... how wrong we were... but that had a lot to do with the "lower numbers" in my opinion. Pc!
Saturday Nov 21, 2009 02:26:51 PM
Frank Z@ Ali:  yeah exactly... who cares about who gets a bigger chunk of the pie? as someone wise said, "i ain't seeing none of that money so i don't relaly care", frankly id on't care if it's a 90-10 split, just make the fight happen so we can enjoy the buildup and the action.

Eastar:  All right. Let me stop being so idiotatic. I know sometimes I get too carry away, is just that I need serious attention! Since I was a kid, I was abonden by my parents. They always hated me because I was so ugly. I apologize to Tss for been so ignorant. Please forgive me. Ya dig! Eastar. I'm out! Peace!

#1 PacFan "Pacquiao #3 on ATG list"Standing firm!:  @Fe'Roz, you will go down in my eyes as one of the greatest fightwriter on TSS my man. You truly can put it into context, great posts! @DaveB, great point if there were no replays available and people knew this for sure it would've drawn more PPVs.@Radam, as always coming out with the real true facts. @Roast, glad to see you back being active. @MisterLee, spot on! To add to that is that most of the boxing experts downgraded that fight without a doubt by telling the public it was too much of a mismatch. They were right, but the wrong guy. @Easter, glad to see you getting back to reality. Welcome back to Earth.

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
