PREDICTION PAGE: Dirrell Picks Ward, Taylor Hedges, Euros Go With Kessler
FOUR SUPER SIX FIGHTERS
MAKE PREDICTIONS
ON WINNER OF
MIKKEL KESSLER-ANDRE WARD FIGHT
European Boxers Take Kessler; One American,
Andre Dirrell Picks Ward, The Other, Jermain Taylor
Calls Group Stage 1 Match
This Saturday, Nov. 21 On SHOWTIME® A “Toss-Up’’
NEW YORK (Nov. 19, 2009) — The two Europeans boxers – victorious over their American opponents in the first round of the Super Six World Boxing Classic – are predicting Mikkel “Viking Warrior” Kessler will beat Andre “S.O.G.” Ward in the final Group Stage 1 matchup this Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
One of the two Americans – Andre Dirrell – likes Ward while Jermain Taylor calls Saturday’s showdown a “toss-up.’’
“I'm going with Ward,” said Dirrell after his Group Stage 1 defeat to Carl Froch in October. Dirrell, along with Arthur Abraham, are expected to be at ringside to catch the action. “Ward has the ability to win,'' Dirrell continued. “This is his biggest fight so he'll have to stick to his game plan but I'm going with him."
The matchup between World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion Kessler and Ward, the hometown, undefeated hero, is a scheduled for 12 rounds and will be for Kessler’s WBA 168-pound title.
“Mikkel Kessler will win because of his strength and ring experience,” said Froch. “I'm looking forward to it because obviously it's a fight that has major implications for me in the Super Six tournament. Andre Ward has that terrific amateur pedigree, winning the Gold medal at the Athens Olympics. He's had some good wins in the pros but we will only find out how good he really is when he steps in there with Kessler.”
Taylor, who was knocked out by Abraham in the 12th round on Oct. 17, sees it going either way: “Andre Ward and Mikkel Kessler will be a very competitive fight and both want to make a statement in the Super Six tournament,’’ Taylor said. “I think the key to the fight depends on who will dictate and set the pace in the early rounds. Both fighters have a lot of skills and will be well prepared to do battle. It's a very close fight to make a prediction on. I would call the fight a toss-up.”
Added Abraham: “Because I have not ever seen an Andre Ward fight live or on tape, I cannot say much. But Kessler is the favorite in this fight nevertheless. I have seen Kessler fight many times and he is very clever and very strong. I have to give the advantage to Kessler because of his strength, experience and cleverness.
“Andre Ward is not to be underestimated. He is very good. He is technically very sound and can also punch hard as he has shown in previous fights. But I hope that my new stablemate, Mikkel Kessler, wins.
He is very versatile, very experienced and he has a great vision/anticipation in the ring. And most importantly, the “Viking Warrior” is a true fighter. If you ask me for a prediction, I would go with a points victory for Mikkel. The boxing fans can certainly be thrilled about this fight because it puts together two of the best technicians in the division.”
Froch, who won a decision over Dirrell, also on Oct. 17, said, “Ward will have the benefit of home advantage, which I'm sure will play its part but Kessler is very experienced and has won on the road before so I'm sure he won't see it as an issue. I'm hoping for my own selfish reasons that Kessler wins because then he'll still have the WBA belt. I'm fighting him next so if he beats Ward then it means that our fight becomes a massive WBC and WBA unification clash and I can get my hands on his belt.”
Abraham said he now gets recognized just walking the streets after beating Taylor. “The victory over Jermain Taylor was great. If you beat big names, you get a lot of recognition, and I notice that when walking through the streets. Not just boxing and sports fans follow the Super Six tournament but also a lot of normal people who would not necessarily watch boxing on TV. They are all interested in the Super Six because it is the best fighting the best.''

Ward is winning this Fight!!!!!,... Ward has the desire,...pedigree,.. focus.... and pedigree,.. along with the unbreakable championship demeanor that comes from not having lost a fight in 14 years,.. his skill is galvinized by his faith,.. and not the kind of faith of a man who just gives eye service by kneeling in the corner before a fight like many boxers do,.. or giving God the Glory after a fight is won(like many others),... but the practicing kind of faith where he actively gets involved in spreading his beliefs,.. It takes much more courage to preach the word as it does to box,..because people loathe a person that preaches Christ,...and it takes the character of a leader to do that effectively,..I don't believe that God will give Ward the win just because he's a believer,.. as much as I think that God has instilled the kind of virtue and character within Ward,...thru Ward's faith . .and that makes him unbeatable,.... Ward has the discipline of a Spartan.. and his ring awareness is such that,... if there are not any openings to exploit,......he has a variety of tools to create those openings,.. Kessler is a fine boxer that has reached his prime,.. so it is unfortunate that he has to meet his demise at such a time as this...mark my word,.. Ward will show the world a side to his boxing talents that the World has only caught a glimse of,.. The World Beater Side,... Ward goes into the lions den and puts the lions to sleep on Nov 21,....

well the bronze boys couldn't do it for the states, here's to hoping the golden boy can. he seems very focused and i love what he said about becoming a true master of this craft, so he'[ll set his matchups accordingly with this goal. it is an old school attitude that needs to spread among boxers again. if it is true that he stays clean and disciplined between fights then he earns my respect even more, because it shows that he's a professional and desires to be consistent and constantly on the rise. as coach used to say, boxing takes the three D's: discipline, desire, dedication. he seems to have all three. here's to hoping he comes out strong and uses his growing skill to make kessler look silly.

Ward will out box the square shouldered Kessler to win a fair UD and rise to joint favourite with AA. Meanwhile next year the masterful JMM will box the pants off our Ricky, shaking off the freezing spell put on him by PBF. And Pavlik will continue to be a wuss. EL TOONOY

I've met Ward and he is such a stand up guy I can't root against him. I feel he is the type of guy to always rise to the occasion, he's going win this one. That said, I'm surprised that Ward looked like the bigger man.

You know what the funny thing about Pavlik is? He has a tuneup fight now lined up just 2 weeks after the Dec 2 matchup that collapsed. True story. I believe Pavlik will be fighting on Dec 16th? I can't remeber the name of the opponent so the guy must not have been to important. It really seems that something fishy is going on with Pavlik? What gives? How is he not able to close a fist and then schedule a fight for 2 weeks later? THIS SEEMS REALLY FISHY! I wanted to give Pavlik the benefit of the doubt, but this seems like a classic case of Mayweather Syndrome, a.k.a. "Scaredious Catius". HA!

He's fighting Miguel Espino, another alumni of the first season of the Contender. He's unbeaten since losing a decision to Peter Manfredo Jr. on the show. Let's hope he scores the upset over Pavlik. Apparently Kelly is still hoping to fight LTP next year, if he doesn't bruise his knee in the park, and if he does all his homework and eats all of his supper. Mum's are much tougher on their kids these days. Final prediction for this article, November next year, after a 12 month lay off, Cotto avenges his loss to Margacheato with a stunning 9th round KO at MSG. EL TOONOY

Angie And Goody...23 Years Later
Twenty three years later after they seconded Marvin Hagler and Ray Leonard in Las Vegas, Goody Petronelli and Angelo Dundee crossed paths again. This time, it was at Foxwoods. Photo/friend of TSS "The Iceman" John Scully reports there were only pleasantries exchanged. Goody didn't debate the split decision victory enjoyed by Leonard, which to this day Hagler disputes.
