If Miguel, it will be said that Manny finally came up against someone too strong. Likely, Cotto will be cheered by the biggest payday of his career.

Powers That Be Want Manny Win....Cotto Doesn't Care

By Ron Borges

LAS VEGAS – In boxing people often talk as if everything is written in stone even though most things are, at best, written in dust. The latest example of this is Saturday night’s WBO welterweight championship fight between Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao.

Although Cotto is a champion who is 14-1 in world title fights with 11 knockouts and 34-1 overall with 27 stoppages, he is being given little chance to hold off Pacquiao, who is widely considered to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Pacquiao has made a habit lately of beating up men bigger than himself, which is frankly most everybody in boxing, because of his unique combination of speed, punching power and skill... so Cotto’s status as a two-time welterweight champion means little to the oddsmakers who have made him a better than 2-1 underdog.

Although he will fight Cotto at 145 pounds at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Pacquiao retains the look of the far smaller man he’s been most of his career, but so what? When he first turned professional Pacquiao fought at 106 pounds and until a year ago had never ventured above 130 yet since that time he has added titles at 135, 140 and is now trying to win at 147.

This has set the stage for what boxing is looking upon as a coronation. Win Saturday night and Pacquiao will not only have become the welterweight champion of the world but he will also have won a far more important title. He will have officially become The Next Big Thing.

Although Cotto is someone who should at least be respected, there is already talk of what Pacquiao will do next, as if this fight is simply a formality. There are hopes for a mega-fight against Floyd Mayweather sometime next year or, failing that, perhaps a fourth fight (what the WBC would call a super rubber match if they could get a sanctioning fee out of it) with his long-time nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez.

If neither materializes the sense is the hottest star in pay-per-view boxing will do something else significant in the ring because as long as he’s in it what does it matter who the opponent may be? This is a position of disrespect not lost on Cotto.

“Psychologically, in this fight, he is not the star,’’ said the promoter of both fighters, Bob Arum, of the WBO title holder he has promoted since he first turned professional nearly nine years ago. “He knows it and I know it. But Miguel Cotto, as Miguel will attest, is the biggest obstacle in Manny’s path.’’

Cotto sat silently staring straight ahead as Arum said this but his face spoke for him. It was an angry sea of shock and disgust, the face of a man not quite as ready to accept this new position as his promoter seemed to be.

In the champion’s opinion, he is still far more than just an obstacle for Manny Pacquiao to overcome. He is not merely some steppingstone toward brighter days and bigger pay checks for Pacquiao or anyone else. Nor is he a launching pad into boxing immortality for Pacquiao, even though that is what is likely to happen if the odds makers, and Arum, are right, for it will be the seventh different weight class in which Pacquiao has won some form of a title belt.

In this day and age that hardly means what it might once have but it is still a measuring stick for Pacquiao and another selling point for the people who are marketing him around the world as an athlete who has transcended his sport and become what Cotto is not – a personality sponsors as well as fans want to be associated with.

Cotto is just a boxer and one seen now as damaged goods by some. The whisper is that he has never fully recovered from the beating he took from Antonio Margarito a year ago, despite his protestations to the contrary, and that is why he is being looked upon like someone headed to the gallows.

If the skeptics are right, Pacquiao will be further uplifted Saturday night, having now beaten Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Cotto in succession, men who had ruled in the 154 pound, 140 pound and 147 pound divisions on the night they got in with a former flyweight champion.

If Cotto pulls off an upset he will not receive the same boost to his reputation. It will be said that Pacquiao finally faced someone too big for him. It will be said Cotto wasn’t as shot as people thought. Many things will be said but none of them will be that Miguel Cotto is someone ready to be taken onto the world stage presently occupied by Pacquiao.

There is no Puerto Rican edition of TIME magazine so he will not become its cover boy, as Pacquiao was this week on the Asian edition. There will be no story about his economic power like ones in The Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated about Pacquiao, and there will be no Sunday front page story on him in the New York Times, which penned one last week that made Pacquiao sound like the savior of a nation, the typhoon and poverty infested Philippines of his birth.

But Miguel Cotto will surely have become one thing Bob Arum and HBO doesn’t want or expects. He will have become a spoiler who derailed the new economic engine of boxing…not that he cares.

“What they say and what they do does not concern me,’’ Cotto said. “They know what they have in front of him.  He better be focused on what they will have in front of him in Miguel Cotto.

“It doesn’t matter if the people want me to win or not. It is just a fight and I have worked to win it so we will see. Forget about Freddie Roach. He can only train Manny the best he can. He may say and think Manny will knock me out but at the end of the day, it is just Manny and Miguel Cotto in the ring.

“It's really not important to me what the boxing world wants to see. Once I beat Manny Pacquiao they can continue their plans and do what they want but I am not going home without winning this fight.’’

If he’s right they won’t be able to continue with their plans or do what they want, which is to use Manny Pacquiao to create a new day for boxing. For all his earnest intentions, brave heart and boxing skills, even if he wins Miguel Cotto cannot do that.

Francisco:  I see Cotto winning by TKO in the later rounds or UD. Pacman is fighting a legit healthy welterweight in Cotto. I just can't see Pacman beating him.

Radam G -- hate won't work. It will just be Manny and Miguel in that squared jungle and the ghost of:  It is a good thing that Cotto is drained. He is so desperate that he'd go to his hitting behind the head, hitting low and bodyslamming tactics if he had full strength. But he is weakened from over self-training himself, straving and drying out. And that is what he did. Nobody in Camp Cotto told him what to do for that 16-week camp. It is apparent by how Cotto terminated a sparring partner for putting the precise PacMan mimicry on him. Since when do fighters go above the trainer's head and fire a good sparring partner? Oh! I musta fo'got! When the trainer is GREEN and PASSIVE! Cotto didn't want "Gato" Figueroa in his camp for arkwardly moving in a hecky-jecky, in-and-out, side-to-side style like Manny and popping Cotto upside the noggin and torso with blinding and surprised accurate punches. Well, he shoulda, coulda kept el gato because he'd be better prepared for the whaling shock that is coming Saturday night. El gato Figueroa doesn't have the speed or power of Manny. Miguel is going into a beatdown suffering from aggravation, frustration, starvation, dehydration and a bit of water intoxication. All of these negatives will be his quick downfall. Oh, yea! He is going to drop. And drop easily because he is one stubborn warrior with PTSD. His fans and Pac-haters are blinded by their dislike of a superbad Pinoy, an arse-kicking Asian. Be in denial all you want to, but to no avail. Ship Cotto will never sail. From the start of round one, he is going to be in a severe storm. A firestorm of torpedos, missiles, and an atomic bomb heard and seen around the world. Cotto ain't ever been able to knock out anyone with a single punch or a combination. He ain't got more power than PacMan. As Fightwriter J Nguyen scribed in another excellent piece, Cotto gets his man out by an "accumulation of punishment." Punish PacMan with an accumulation of anything but jiggerbugging, and cotton dancing feet is Miguel's fate. Antonio Margarito is here in Las Vegas. He will be in a ringseat to see Cotto get beat. Cotto won't have to see his ghost. He can look from that squared jungle and see the real deal. Don't be surprised if Margahero fights Manny in March. Ain't trying to holla about Money May. i'll cross that bridge when the time comes to beat down the modern-day Buffalo Soldier sent with his 45 pistol to halt the Pinoy revolt. Manny has his gloves loaded with WMD -- Whup-a$$ of Manny Destruction. Enjoy the fight! I will! Holla!

captainpunchyaface:  i understand Manny means a lot to a lot of people particularly the asian persuasion and i like him as a fighter as well but at the end of the day boxing is boxing, and if Cotto wins(which i think he will) it will be good for the sport as well. Million will tune in to see Manny and when they Cotto win they will remember his name as well and when he has next fight it will be bigger than usual, maybe not as big as this fight is gonna be but then again what would be. However...if Cotto wins and then goes on to fight Mayweather it will be bigger than this fight and Manny will go back down to 140 and fall out of the welterweight picture or he will fight Mosley(doubt it) and lose again. How can people not give Cotto credit for winning? on fight night they will be seperated by a couple pounds if that...when Manny fought Oscar, Manny was the bigger man on fight night. The bottom line is people want Manny to keep winning...Damn the sport, they wanna build up the fighter....if Cotoo loses, Manny is superman, if Cotto wins he just beat up on a little man who was too small anyway.......Well Miguel its seems that "you're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't" so i say "do!".

bee:  I see Cotto taller than my fellow Flipino Manny Pacquio..But everyone who saw Manny on the ring can predict what is going to happen..Figther like Manny Pacquio is full of skills and tactics and also well trained..This is his profession and he is contunuing to master his profession..If you have the passion on BOXING SPORTS, then you should know by now the intense of this fight..We will see what will gonna happen and get ready for what would be the result later on..But I can say that, whenever Manny Pacquio is on that Las Vegas Boxing Ring, he is a hell of a HERO to me....
Thursday Nov 12, 2009 10:55:01 PM
Manny:  Cotto's trainer's prediction! 'Pacquiao will need a lot of luck, says Cotto trainer' Santiago knows so well what will happen on the 14th, a lot of lucky punches will be hitting his ward in bunches. A lucky punch in the 1st round will open up a cut in Cott's eye, a lucky punch in the 1st will also knock him down, a lucky punch in the second will worsen the cut, a lucky punch in the third will stagger Cotto the 3rd time and a lucky punch in the 4th will worsen the cut and Santiago needs to throw the towel early and stop the fight to stop the lucky punches that are hitting his ward.

Ricky:  Pacquaiao beat the former middleweight champion de la hoya and it was even in the legitimate weight of 147. They say that Delahoya was shot. C'mmon! De la hoya was a legitimate 147 pounder when he lost to Pac. The only reason he lost was that Pacquaio was just too strong for him. He wasn't prepared to beat a fast guy to the draw.

Isaiah:  The name of my book will be, "Manny Pacquiao, champion of the people, but one step up tp far." Written by TKO in the tenth in favor of Cotto. We'll see which one gets published. HA!

Edarwin:  Well lets see fight night if Cotto will KO The PACMAN! Be sure Cotto has a Pillow it will be usefull for him!, After Cotto kissing the canvas all PAChaters will say Cotto is a damage good, his not on his prime, his not recovered in AM beating, etc... they can not accept that PACMAN is a Superhuman extraOrdinary Boxer! Go PACMAN!!! KO...

temper proof:  Ricardo Torres, Zab Judah, De Marcus Corley and Joshua Clottey were all hit with LOW BLOW that made them lose their strength. The reason why Pacquiao is hugely popular he never resort to dirty fighting. He always believe in his strength and power. POWERS THAT BE ISSUE IS NOTHING. Low blow is a major concern for Pacquiao Team and boxing fans who expect a fight well be worth the price.
Friday Nov 13, 2009 01:52:53 AM
Isaiah@temper proof:  I saw the Joshua Clottey and Zab Judah fights. True the Judah fight had a couple of low blows, but Judah threw in a couple himself. As far as Clottey/Cotto, what fight were you watching? I didn't see any low blows. As far as the other ones, I think you exagerrate a bit. @"FALSE GOD", Why don't you just shut your mouth? That's not something to take so lightly. By the way, it's 7 and 70 fold.
Friday Nov 13, 2009 02:38:08 AM
Crisologo:  Let's see if Cotto can handle from the Pacman''s firepower of strength. Pacquiao is still in his prime, and nobody can destroy that prime strength even a torpedo blow. There should be a ready stretcher available comes fight night to bring Cotto to the hospital after a strong blow resulting to TKO. Crisologo

arturo:  this fight must be good if GOD is paying cLose attention.

albback4u:  Cotto is open for the left straight and left upper cut from Manny, any right handed boxers Manny fought. Simply because of his speed and angle of attack. Manny's always fighting off center to the left hand side of the opponent. If your a right handed boxer you can't see his fist coming at you coz he's hiding behind your left gloves, if you have both hands up. You don't see what he's doing so you peek and his left is there. But Cotto is the biggest fighter he has yet to fight....on fight night Cotto will be near or at 160 pounds. Manny at heaviest is at 147. this weight difference will pose problems for Manny. Cotto have a good body shoots and right straight...has fairly quick hands with power. If he can hit Manny he will make him quit on the later rounds. If he can't then Manny left will cut him up and the ref will stop it due to cuts.

Kukuks:  Cotto doesn't want a sparring partner who moves from side to side, popping in & out or sway head, He want someone who just stood in front of him like Clottey covering his face with gloves while Cotto is punching. Manny will not stand infront of him even a fraction of a second without doing anything.

thebryguy:  Pacquiao's camp is so sure this will be an easy fight, they are selling tickets for a concert that Manny will put on! That's a bit much when you are facing a guy as good as Miguel Cotto. How's Manny going to sing with a concussion?! COTTO TKO 10
Friday Nov 13, 2009 08:03:58 AM
Kukuks:  Cotto's puching preparation is noticeable espacially the right and left hook and upper cut, which on Manny's advantage.

anonymous boxing:  It's easy to get swept away by the momentum of Manny's popularity, so people here (author included) and everywhere dismiss Cotto as just a "speed bump" on Pacman's path. BIG MISTAKE! Roach is right to fight this psychological battle before the fight, cause Cotto's facing his "Vegas-demons" I'm sure. That's the main danger on Cotto's end, and Roach knows it. He wants to start fast, so Cotto won't gain confidence. But he won't be able to stop it. Cotto WILL gain confidence! Plaster Gloves, and hard-hitting shane couldn't KO Cotto, and neither will Manny. It's only a matter of time till Manny feels Cotto's left-hook body special, which in the past has proven to be Manny's cryptonite. You'll see a speedy Manny slow down. Mark my words!
Friday Nov 13, 2009 09:08:52 AM
arbee:  Viewing Pac's fights and fighting him face to face are two different worlds. Cotto's camp is simply underestimating the small man from the Philppines. If Cotto's thinking is I'll finished him right away because he's just a small guy then I'll say he's finished. But if he'll try to be clinical, do the sweet science smartly and simply end the fight in a give and take basis and shoot for an SD and UD, then he is in a much brighter chance of toppling the guy. This is if,,,,,and I basically give Manny the plus because of the plans, optons and strategies that he is good in implementing with superb patience and skills. Santiago said it well that Manny will be so lucky to beat Miguel. Blind passes in basketball and blind shots in boxing are the works of thinking players. and Manny is so LUCKY being endowed not only with speed and power but also with the finest gifts of using his brain so well and can remember all the fix and moving objects in the ring. A natural guard in basketball, he loves to throw and pass the ball where your blind spot is and without looking. All his precision shots and movements is the product of playing basketball for years. If Cotto can match his movement in one-on=one setting, I'll bet he'll win. But sad to say, his mind is simply boxing and Santiago just complicated his chances of winning by being his trainer.

Keith:  Size will not matter in this fight as Cotto is only 1/2 inch taller and both have the same wingspan (67 inches). I don't think PacMan will KO Cotto out cold but I think he bludgeons Cotto like he did De La Hoya. Also, a lot of people have said that since PacMan couldn't knock out De La Hoya that he doesn't punch hard enough to hurt Cotto. Oscar has a granite chin, Cotto doesn't. They say Cotto is one of the best body punchers in the division, if not the best, and that's true. But you have to get close to hit the body and we all know that Cotto's defense is spotty at best. Also, they say that Cotto withstood Margarito's punches and that's true. But Margarito is not known for one punch knockout power. He (Margarito) beats you down, literally. So even though Cotto has been hit by some heavy hitters and survived in the past he has been hurt by fighters who's punches are sharper (Judah and Mosley). No one punches with the kind of power and speed that PacMan does. He is also a very sharp puncher. It's true that Cotto could outbox him and win a UD but I don't think that will happen because PacMan probably won't allow him to. Expect a war for as long as it lasts! PacMan TKO (by Bludgeoning) Cotto!

Radam G in Manila Vegas@ MisterLee:  MisterLee, thanks, but don't worry about those slumbum readers. I don't even read their $hit anymore. I just read the posts of the top TSS readers -- about five people. Bigoted and racist psychoblabber from hypocrites and lifetime losers is their wasted illusions of power. In real life, they are apparently misable misfits with no control and low positions and standings. So they are bent on controlling this TSS site with attacks -- not against me -- but against genders, ethnicites, professions and races. Their silly attempts for insulting slide right off me llike butter. They cannot handle my rhetorical counterpunches. Those counters send into chaos, as Manny's counters will do to Miguel. This nonsense that these bigots, racists and knucklehead keep spitting out is on Editor Mike, not me. I'd not want his job. I would keep my word and ban them all. Holla!

anonymous boxing @ \'powers that be..\':  ...oh, one more thing. I DO agree with the overall content of this article. For those on here familiar with the dark side of boxing: If it goes to decision, I'm sure there's wealthy politicians, and a money-hungry promoter who's best interests are to see a victory for Manny. (search: Pacquiao vs Mayweather to land in cowboys stadium) Cotto might need a KO to win.

Master Snake :  Why is everyone so sold on making a fight with two fighters who KO'd the same guy whom uses his face like a catchers mitt? Hey, Radar Groupie, you're a trip. I can picture you now: listens to hip-hop, wears a cap to the side and pants that sag. I admit, I got that one wrong with the pretty Pinoy chick vs. the ugly leprechaun. I'll just stay out of women's boxing. I've always said I'd rather watch a bikini contest than women fighting any day. Corrupt politicians from a poor country should have minimal sway over this fight. Let's all remember, this is for the WBO belt. The organization that is based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Plus, what boxing enthusiasts wants to see a guy make history with his 7th title on criminal judging. If the guy is gonna do it, do it right!
